Summary

  • Glow/winit often tear down after Windows hibernate, and Bridge treated that as a clean exit, taking the HTTP/HID server with it (#16).
  • Relaunch unless the user quit or an in-app update is already spawning the next binary. A panel that stayed up for 30s resets the crash-loop counter; five quick failures stop relaunching.

Test plan

  • Required Check jobs pass
  • Quit from the tray menu / settings still exits
  • Tray Restart still comes back
  • Windows: hibernate ~10 minutes, wake, Bridge is running again

Made with Cursor

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The Bridge can now run without a tray window when explicitly requested or when Linux has no display available. Notices appear as native notifications, and the server stops on Ctrl-C or when an update begins restarting.
    • If the tray panel closes unexpectedly, the app can relaunch automatically. Relaunching stops after repeated quick exits, while normal exits and in-app updates prevent automatic relaunch.
  • Bug Fixes
    • GUI errors now trigger a brief pause before an automatic relaunch.

Glow/winit often end the event loop when Windows restores the GPU, and Bridge treated that as a clean exit. Spawn a replacement unless the user quit or an in-app update is already relaunching.

📝 Walkthrough

Desktop startup now supports headless operation when explicitly requested or when Linux has no display environment. GUI shutdown stops the server and can relaunch the process after an unexpected exit, subject to runtime and retry limits. User exit and in-app update paths disable automatic relaunch.

Changes: Desktop lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Startup modes and tray exit control
src/desktop.rs
Headless startup runs without a tray window and routes notices through native notifications. Tray Exit and Quit disable automatic relaunch; update restart also disables relaunch before exit.
GUI failure handling and bounded relaunch
src/desktop.rs
The GUI launch catches panics and records runtime. After the GUI stops, the server stops. Permitted relaunches use a generation value, reset after stable runs, and stop after five quick relaunches. GUI errors add a two-second delay. Tests cover exit, generation, and limit behavior.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f3484

If the tray panel exits while an in-app update is starting, the old version may be relaunched and compete with the updater. That can leave the update failing or the old version running. The window is narrow, but it should be closed before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f3484

Recovery is bounded and preserves the existing local server boundary. However, an update handoff can overlap with recovery if the panel stops before acknowledging the update, potentially disrupting installation or leaving the old version running.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Update replacement ownership depends on GUI acknowledgement rather than the installer handoff itself. Staging can spawn the installer helper before the GUI consumes Restarting and disables automatic recovery. If the GUI unexpectedly returns or panics in that interval, the new recovery path starts the old executable before the original process exits. The helper then proceeds after that original PID exits, potentially encountering a running executable on Windows or launching an updated process that loses the server port to the old instance. This can strand an outdated running version and undermine update rollout. The base did not automatically relaunch after an unexpected GUI exit.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified handoff risk is scoped to a local Bridge installation and its running server version. The inspected change provides no new remote listener or privilege-elevation mechanism; the concern is update ownership and effective patch deployment, not a demonstrated attacker-controlled execution path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Localhost binding and configured-origin routing are preserved through normal replacement. These existing controls constrain network exposure but do not arbitrate installer ownership or ensure that the process serving the port is the updated version.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Joining the old server and bounding quick relaunch generations provide useful failure containment. Neither prevents the updater race: server cleanup can finish while an external helper remains pending, and a valid recovery generation can still launch the pre-update executable.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Represent installer handoff as lifecycle ownership shared with the outer recovery path, rather than relying on GUI notification consumption. Coordinate helper creation, staging failure, and shutdown so recovery cannot launch a competing executable once installation ownership has transferred.

Disable relaunch at the updater handoff.

download_and_stage() starts the update helper before install_update() sends UpdateEvent::Restarting. If the GUI stops before TrayApp::logic consumes that event, keep_running remains true. The shutdown path can then spawn the old executable after stopping the server. The helper waits only for the original process, so the old executable can start before the helper replaces the binary and launches the update.

Clear keep_running when the update helper starts, while preserving relaunch for failed updates and user exits.
