fix(auth): Ctrl+C during browser sign-in exits 130 instead of 0 - #1624
altimate-code auth login -p altimate-backend --method "Altimate LLM Gateway" (and any other browser-callback OAuth method) waits for the callback under a clack spinner. Pressing Ctrl+C there did the wrong thing:
In a terminal it exited 0. The spinner's block() (@clack/core) puts stdin in raw mode and calls process.exit(0) on Ctrl+C, so auth login … && altimate-code link continued after a canceled sign-in and link failed with "Not signed in". Ctrl+C at the method picker already exits non-zero, so the same command was inconsistent.
Without a terminal (scripts, kill -INT), the spinner's SIGINT listener swallowed the signal and the process kept waiting until the sign-in timed out.
serve and run already exit 130 on SIGINT "so a SIGINT/SIGTERM isn't masked as a successful (0) run"; sign-in was the exception.
Fix
providers.ts: the OAuth "auto" wait prints Waiting for authorization... (Ctrl+C to cancel) instead of a spinner and races the callback against SIGINT. On cancel it fails with Sign-in canceled. and exit code 130. No credential is saved, and the callback listener closes when the process exits.
index.ts: the top-level catch set process.exitCode = 1afterFormatError, which overwrote a CliError's own exitCode. It now sets the default first. This also makes the existing fail("Cancelled.", 130) in learn exit 130 as intended.
Testing
New test/cli/auth-login-cancel.test.ts runs auth login against a fake plugin whose browser callback never completes. It covers Ctrl+C in a real PTY and SIGINT without a terminal, and both expect exit 130 plus "Sign-in canceled.". On main the PTY case exits 0 and the no-terminal case is still running 10 s after SIGINT.
bun test test/cli: 1173 pass. The 2 failures are --time-budget cases in test/cli/run/json-output.test.ts that also fail on main.
Not in scope
A browser sign-in that finishes with failed still exits 0 (the "auto" and "code" paths both fall through to "Done"). That's the same class of problem but a separate change.
Fixes Ctrl+C during auth login browser sign-in so a canceled sign-in exits 130 instead of being masked as a success (0) or hanging until the callback times out.
Bug Fixes
Replaces the spinner on the OAuth "auto" wait with a log line and races the callback against SIGINT; canceling now fails with "Sign-in canceled." and exit code 130.
Sets the default exitCode to 1 before formatting errors so a CliError's own exit code (e.g. 130) is no longer overwritten.
Adds subprocess tests covering Ctrl+C in a real PTY and SIGINT without a terminal, both of which fail on main; the tests are skipped on Windows and run in CI's bounded subprocess pass.
Written for commit 633526f. Summary will update on new commits.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Pressing Ctrl+C during OAuth sign-in now cancels the operation, displays “Sign-in canceled,” and exits with a cancellation status. This works both in a terminal and when the CLI receives an interrupt signal.
CLI errors now set a failure exit status before error formatting and reporting, helping ensure failures are reflected when the command exits.
OAuth authorization progress, successes, and failures are displayed as direct messages rather than spinner updates.
`auth login` waited for the browser callback under a clack spinner. In a
terminal the spinner's raw-mode stdin turns Ctrl+C into `process.exit(0)`,
so `auth login ... && altimate-code link` continued after a canceled sign-in.
Without a terminal its SIGINT listener swallowed the signal and the process
kept waiting until the sign-in timed out.
- Replace the spinner on the OAuth "auto" wait with a log line and race the
callback against SIGINT; on cancel, fail with "Sign-in canceled." and exit 130
- `index.ts`: set the default exit code 1 before `FormatError`, so a
`CliError`'s own `exitCode` is no longer overwritten (this also makes the
existing `fail("Cancelled.", 130)` in `learn` exit 130)
- Subprocess tests for Ctrl+C in a PTY and SIGINT without a terminal; both
fail on `main`

The provider login flow now handles SIGINT while waiting for automatic OAuth authorization. Cancellation reports “Sign-in canceled.” and exits with code 130. Subprocess tests cover Ctrl+C in a PTY and SIGINT without a terminal.

SIGINT handling and login outcomes packages/opencode/src/cli/cmd/providers.ts, packages/opencode/src/index.ts
The OAuth wait races against SIGINT and removes its signal listener when settled. Cancellation reports “Sign-in canceled.” with exit code 130. Login outcomes are logged directly, and the CLI sets its default exit code before formatting errors.
Cancellation tests and CI selection packages/opencode/test/cli/auth-login-cancel.test.ts, .github/workflows/ci.yml
Subprocess tests check cancellation in PTY and non-terminal runs. The CI subprocess pass includes the new test.
The cancellation tests can fail intermittently because they signal before the command is ready. Synchronize them with listener registration before merging.

SUGGESTION: Extract the duplicated result-persist block shared by the three auth methods
The result.type === "failed" / result.type === "success" -> put(...) -> Login successful block now appears three times in this function (auto at 129-152, code at 162-185, api at 212-224), and this PR is a direct consequence of that drift: the auto branch was still calling spinner.stop(...) while code/api had already moved to Prompt.log.*, so the spinner-removal had to be hand-applied here. A single applyAuthResult(result, provider) helper would have made this a one-line change and keeps the next credential/exit-code change from silently landing in only one method.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
SUGGESTION: The new global exit-code rule also re-codes learn's declined-promotion path
Setting the default before FormatError means any CliError with an explicit exitCode now wins. The only other producer is cli/cmd/learn.ts:927 (fail("Cancelled.", 130)), which fires when the user answers no to a promotion prompt - that path changes 1 -> 130 here even though nothing was interrupted, and automation commonly treats 130 as SIGINT. The existing coverage (test/altimate/learn/cli.test.ts:810) only asserts not.toBe(0), so a regression back to 1 would go unnoticed. Worth pinning the intended code in that test, or documenting why a declined answer reports 130.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
SUGGESTION: This PTY setup duplicates test/fixture/pty-tui.ts without its teardown and fail-fast hardening
Spawn + onData accumulation + the onExit promise + poll-until-text already exist in launchTui's session wrapper (waitForText, sendKey("Ctrl-C"), exited, and a dispose() that escalates SIGTERM -> SIGKILL and awaits exit). launchTui itself cannot be used as-is because it appends a project positional that would land in auth login [target], but extracting that session wrapper would avoid the divergence here: the local poll loop at line 82 has no child-exit check, so a CLI that dies before printing WAITING burns the full 60 s and then reports never printed (the harness fails fast with the captured output), and finally { child.kill() } neither awaits exit nor escalates to SIGKILL, which is exactly the orphaned-child leak dispose() was written to prevent on CI.

The incremental changes (commit 633526f) are sound: the new waitFor/exitWithin helpers bound both waits with a deadline, the no-terminal test now drains stdout in a background task instead of releaseLock()-ing mid-read (so Sign-in canceled. is captured on stderr without racing the reader), and adding test/cli/auth-login-cancel.test.ts to SUBPROCESS_PATHS is the right way to run a test that spawns the real CLI. describe.skipIf(OPENCODE_SKIP_SUBPROCESS || win32) keeps the main pass clean without leaving the file unrunnable, and the CI job runs on ubuntu-latest, so the top-level @opencode-ai/core/pty/pty.bun import is not a Windows hazard. The fix itself looks correct: replacing the clack spinner with a plain log line removes the raw-mode process.exit(0), untilSigint races the callback against SIGINT and always removes its listener (including on rejection), fail("Sign-in canceled.", 130) returns before the credential-save branch and before outro("Done"), and moving process.exitCode = 1 ahead of FormatError correctly lets a CliError's own exit code survive to process.exit(). Remaining notes are maintainability/coverage suggestions.

I ran the real gateway sign-in (auth login -p altimate-backend --method "Altimate LLM Gateway") against the production sign-in page in a PTY with a temporary HOME. I pressed Ctrl+C after "Waiting for authorization" appeared and the callback listener was up.
The installed release reproduces the reported behavior, and this branch passes all three retest checks: a non-zero exit, no listener left behind, and no credential saved. The no-terminal SIGINT case was not run live; test/cli/auth-login-cancel.test.ts covers it.

Wait for the SIGINT listener before signaling.
providers.ts prints WAITING before untilSigint installs its listener. If the child is descheduled between those operations, either test can signal too early and fail without Sign-in canceled. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Publish a readiness marker after listener registration and wait for it in both tests. For example, the fake callback can schedule a marker with setImmediate before returning its pending promise.
As per coding guidelines, wait on a “published readiness signal,” not timing.

Approved. Ctrl+C during browser sign-in now exits 130 both in a terminal and without one. I checked locally that both new tests fail against main's providers.ts/index.ts (the PTY case exits 0, and the no-terminal case is still running 10 s after SIGINT) and pass at this head (3 runs, 4–8 s each). Scratch runs at this head gave: callback success → 0, SIGTERM during the wait → 143 immediately. In Bun, removing the SIGINT listener puts the default action back. The callback server can't keep the process alive because of the process.exit() in index.ts's finally. The code-paste and API-key methods are unchanged, and the TUI sign-in path doesn't share this code.
Three minor findings are inline, none blocking:
Cancel abandons the in-flight OAuth callback, so the gateway plugin can still save credentials after "Sign-in canceled." This is an edge-timing case after browser consent, and the abort-signal fix is safe to do in a follow-up.
The index.ts reorder changes learn's cancel exit code to 130 with no test. The gap is test-only, and the change is intended.
A failed sign-in still exits 0. This is pre-existing and already called out as out of scope.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Minor: cancel abandons the in-flight callback, so a plugin that persists inside callback() can still save after "Sign-in canceled."
When SIGINT wins the race, authorize.callback() keeps running. The Altimate LLM Gateway plugin exchanges the login token and calls AltimateApi.saveCredentials() inside its callback (src/altimate/plugin/altimate.ts around 488-506). Suppose Ctrl+C lands after the browser redirect but before that exchange and save finish. The CLI prints "Sign-in canceled." and fails with 130, but store.dispose(ctx) and Telemetry.shutdown() (which has up to a 10 s budget) both run before process.exit(), so the save can still complete and the user ends up signed in. The old spinner hard-exited on Ctrl+C and cut that save off, so this PR lengthens the window.
Suggested follow-up: pass an AbortSignal (or an optional cancel()) into the OAuth callback contract and have the gateway plugin skip the save once it is aborted. Until then, describe it as "the CLI saves no credential" instead of "no credential is saved".
Not blocking: it needs Ctrl+C in the sub-second gap after consent has already finished in the browser. The stored credential is the one the user approved, and nothing is lost or corrupted.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Minor: this reorder also changes learn's cancel exit code from 1 to 130, and no test covers it.
Only two callers pass a non-default exit code: providers.ts:127 (new) and src/cli/cmd/learn.ts:927 (fail("Cancelled.", 130)). Every other fail() and new CliError(...) site uses 1 or leaves it out, so those are unchanged. A non-CliError error still exits 1, and it now also exits 1 if FormatError itself throws (before, the exit code stayed unset). The learn change is the intended fix. A small test would lock it in: a CliError with exitCode: 130 that reaches this catch should exit 130.
Not blocking: the gap is test-only, and the behaviour change is intended.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Minor (pre-existing): a failed browser sign-in still exits 0.
result.type === "failed" logs "Failed to authorize", falls through to outro("Done"), and exits 0. The code-paste branch (line 162) does the same. The PR body already lists this as out of scope. I'm noting it here so the follow-up has an anchor, for example return yield* fail("Failed to authorize").
providers.ts:125-126: "Waiting for authorization..." is printed before untilSigint registers the SIGINT listener. Only a few synchronous steps separate them, so the gap is practically unreachable. Still, starting the race before logging would close it for users and for the tests, which send Ctrl+C as soon as they see that text.
providers.ts:47: let onSigint = () => {}, reassigned inside the Promise executor, is correct because the executor runs synchronously, but it reads as fragile. A const handler declared before the Promise would be clearer.
.github/workflows/ci.yml:331: the comment listing the subprocess-pass members (test/cli/{acp,smokes,serve} + run-process/mcp-add/help-snapshots) doesn't mention auth-login-cancel yet.
index.ts:289-292: the altimate_change block also wraps the unchanged upstream const formatted = FormatError(e) line. Only process.exitCode = 1 is the fork's change.
Spelling differs between messages: "Sign-in canceled." here and "Cancelled." in learn.
