A first length cap on the rule classifier, replaced in the last commit.
fix: release PR review follow-ups (bot reviews on this PR):
the tool schema hint matches only the messages an argument problem produces, including a workspace tool schema mismatch;
CHANGELOG wording: warehouse_add over MCP, tool run starting the background process, the analyst's built-in tools;
the MCP workspaces note says which checks are not covered by tests yet;
the adversarial timing bounds are 15 s.
fix: bound the rule classifier's slow patterns instead of capping its input: two of the classifier's patterns backtracked, and a 450 KB request took about 16 s. The clause scan and the rule-cue lookahead are now bounded, so long texts are still classified whole (a cap would change what callers read from a long message) and take milliseconds. The tool schema hint also covers a missing workspace skill name or SQL field.
fix: bound the rule classifier's glossary cue too and test: time every rule classifier cue on 450 KB inputs: the glossary cue had the same rescan (450 KB of "means " took about 29 s); it now looks 500 characters ahead. Every cue now classifies a 450 KB input in under 100 ms locally, and the tests bound each at 5 s.
Release review: all five reviewers said ship with notes, with no P0 and no HOLD. The reviewers were CTO, product, data engineer, tech lead, and a privacy officer as this release's adversarial reviewer. Deferred findings are filed as #1648 to #1652. The SQL classifier gaps are in #1644.
After merge: tag the merge commit v0.12.9 and push only the tag, which starts release.yml.
How did you verify your code works?
Preflight and static checks:--stage pre preflight passed (9/9). Typecheck and the marker guard are clean.
Full opencode suite: 20,477 passed, 9 failed, all explained:
6 MCP tests read the developer's own MCP config. They pass with an isolated HOME (15/15).
2 are the --time-budget JSON-output tests that also failed in the v0.12.8 release run.
1 budget-finalization subprocess test timed out under full-suite load and passes alone.
Release tests:
adversarial, rules and tool CLI tests 410/410;
earlier release adversarial tests 258/258;
every test file changed since v0.12.8: 3,798 passed, 0 failed.
Pre-release build:pre-release passed, and the darwin-arm64 binary reports 0.12.9.
Smoke test on that binary (tool list, then tool run sql_execute against SQLite, with and without the daemon):
reads ran;
writes needed --allow-write;
TRUNCATE was refused even with it;
invalid JSON arguments pointed to tool schema;
tool daemon status and stop worked.
Cost side effects
None added by the release commits. The included PRs describe their own: #1605 makes one model call to word each proposed rule, and the tool daemon from #1609 runs only the queries its callers send.

- Line 22: Update ASKED_MEMORY to match “remember … for me” across any length of
text that contains no clause punctuation, removing the 300-character cap while
preserving the existing boundary and punctuation constraints with a linear scan.
- Line 33: Update the glossary-term check in classify so topic words anywhere
after the first “means” on the same line still match, regardless of distance.
Scan each line once, checking only the text after its first “means” for the
glossary topics, to keep the check linear in the input length.

Long personal requests can receive an incorrect rule proposal, and long glossary definitions can be rejected instead of saved. These bounded edge cases warrant fixes or explicit owner acceptance; no broader release-blocking failure is established.

The title "chore(release): v0.12.9" names the main change, a release of version 0.12.9. It is concise and specific enough for a teammate scanning history to identify the primary change. It does not describe the individual fixes, docs, or tests in the payload, which is expected for a release PR.

Explanation
The description follows the template sections: Issue for this PR, Type of change, What does this PR do?, How did you verify your code works?, Cost side effects, Screenshots, and Checklist. It identifies the release scope, lists the commits and fixes, gives test and build results, and states the cost side effects. Its "Issue for this PR" section lists related PRs rather than a single "Closes #" issue, and the Screenshots section is marked N/A. These are minor gaps and do not make the description incomplete. The description also contains a long, detailed release narrative, but it is not a clearly AI-generated wall of text that would trigger the template's rejection rule.

The new .{0,500} glossary window fixes the rescan but is an undocumented, untested behavioural bound: a keyword more than 500 characters after means on the same line no longer matches, and nothing pins that distance. Add a comment (as the neighbouring 300/2,000 bounds have) and one within-window plus one beyond-window case.
Files Reviewed (2 files)
packages/opencode/src/altimate/rules/classify.ts - 1 suggestion; the previous warning is resolved. \bmeans\b.{0,500}\b(?:revenue|users?|customers?|metric)\b is now linear per means (at most 500 positions tried per occurrence), \b[A-Z]{2,}\s+(?:means|stands for|is short for)\b stays linear because word boundaries limit the greedy [A-Z]{2,} scans, and no other cue in MEMORY_CUES/RULE_CUES/ASKED_MEMORY/memoryScope has an unbounded quantifier pair. ARR means annual recurring revenue still matches via the first alternative.
packages/opencode/test/skill/release-v0.12.9-adversarial.test.ts - the new test.each builds 450 KB inputs for nine cue shapes, including "means " (75,000 occurrences), which is exactly the no-match rescan path the old .* made quadratic; the 5 s bound has ~50x headroom over the claimed per-case runtime. It is not redundant with the earlier "long texts are read whole" test, which only covered remember forms and a 3 KB tail.

The cap removal and the two bounded patterns do not cover the glossary cue \bmeans\b.*\b(?:revenue|users?|customers?|metric)\b, which still rescans to end of line at every means with no keyword after it: a 450 KB single-line input of "means " repeated is ~1.7e10 character steps, the same multi-second stall the cap prevented. The new timing test's cases all match on the first pattern, so it does not exercise a no-match path. Bound that alternative and add a "means ".repeat(50_000) case.

packages/opencode/src/altimate/rules/classify.ts - 1 warning; ASKED_MEMORY and the remember lookahead are correctly bounded and the 2,000-character cap is gone, so long texts are classified whole again (previous warning resolved), but the glossary cue is still unbounded
packages/opencode/src/cli/cmd/tool.ts - new ARGUMENT_ERROR alternatives match the workspace validators A workspace skill name is required. and A SQL query in <field> is required. (query/sql/sql_query/statement all fit \S+); no over-match on SQL/connection errors
packages/opencode/test/skill/release-v0.12.9-adversarial.test.ts - updated classifier assertions match the new behavior; the 5 s bound is generous for the covered inputs but none of them forces the no-match backtracking path

Texts past the 2,000-character cap now return ambiguous, but RuleTrigger.explicit then re-classifies the agent's text, so an explicit "as a team rule" / "just for me" inside the cap is lost, and a long rule payload from the memory tool is written to project memory without owner review.

The 2,000-character cap also applies to the explicit as a team rule / just for me markers, so a long message whose explicit choice comes after the cap can be classified as the opposite kind (e.g. a requested team rule stored as a personal memory) instead of falling back to the ambiguous card.
The 6 s absolute wall-clock budget covers three ~1 MB classifier runs; on a loaded shared runner this can flake. Other adversarial suites here allow 15 s for the same non-quadratic check.
Docs-only release PR: the single change is the [0.12.9] CHANGELOG entry, and each claim in it was checked against the shipped code (tool CLI flags/subcommands, MCP default tool set and --allow-write/--all-tools/--workspace-tools, 10-minute daemon idle timeout, 500-table schema_inspect cap, Learning from sessions: wording, learn sync, rules: sidebar line, telemetry_opted_out, symlink-following external-directory checks, analyst reasoning effort, and logout key removal). All match. The release workflow only requires the [0.12.9] tag string in CHANGELOG.md, which is present, and the previous release commit also touched CHANGELOG.md only, so no version-file bump is expected here.
- `auth logout` also removes the cached telemetry identity, as the telemetry reference says
- `tool run` points to `tool schema` only for argument errors, and `--allow-write` help says what counts as a write
- docs: the DROP/TRUNCATE block is best effort, tool results reach the calling agent's model, `mcp serve --workspace-tools`, signed-in telemetry is not anonymous, the narrower config opt-out caveat, and no draft wording in the MCP workspaces note
- CHANGELOG: heads-up items from the release review

Workspace context adds bounded data to a client's prompt; skills load on demand. Explicit knowledge calls can use backend models, memory publication can invoke the existing backend extractor, and warehouse calls retain warehouse costs. A CLI link can normally backfill existing memory; clients that expose linking without a backfill confirmation must disable memory for that subprocess, as the Claude plugin does. Do not pass `--yes` unless replacing a link was explicitly requested.

WARNING: The 2,000-character cap also hides the person's explicit choice when it appears later in a long message.
classify now runs every pattern against input.slice(0, MAX_CLASSIFIED_CHARS), including ASKED_RULE and ASKED_MEMORY, which are documented as deciding the kind outright. A long message that pastes notes or SQL first and ends with "... save this as a team rule" loses that signal: if the first 2,000 characters contain a memory cue ("I prefer ..."), classify returns memory, so the request is kept as a personal memory instead of becoming a team-rule proposal - the opposite of what was asked. It does not even fall back to the ambiguous card that would let the person correct it. The reverse happens for "just for me" after a rule cue.
The backtracking risk this cap guards is in MEMORY_CUES and the remember ... for me alternative, not in ASKED_RULE. Testing the cheap explicit marker against the full input while keeping the cap for the cue scans preserves the bound and the explicit choice.

SUGGESTION: An absolute wall-clock budget on shared CI can turn this guard into a flake.
This asserts that three ~1 MB classifications finish within 6 s, and the SELECT case alone sends ~330,000 projections through the parser. Other adversarial suites in this package allow 15 s for the same "not quadratic" check. On a loaded GitHub runner a single slow parse fails the suite for a reason unrelated to the regression being guarded. Consider a looser bound so slow-but-correct runs still pass.
- the rule classifier leaves a text past 2,000 characters ambiguous instead of reading only its start, so a late "as a team rule" is never misread
- `tool run` adds the `tool schema` hint only for the messages an argument problem produces, including a workspace tool schema mismatch
- CHANGELOG: `warehouse_add` over MCP in the overview, `tool run` (not every `tool` command) starts the background process, and the analyst lockdown covers built-in tools
- MCP workspaces note says which checks are not covered by tests yet
- adversarial timing bounds raised to 15 s for loaded CI runners

Add a test for a cue near the start of a long input.
The test at line 487 expects ambiguous when the only cue is past the 2,000-character cap. An implementation that returns ambiguous for every input over 2,000 characters would still pass it. No test in these files checks a cue inside the first 2,000 characters of a long input.

Add a test alongside the existing long-input case for classifyRule that places a
valid cue, such as “always use CTEs,” at the start of an input longer than 2,000
characters and asserts the result is “rule.” Keep the existing test for a cue
beyond the cap unchanged.

WARNING:ambiguous past the cap does not guarantee the person gets to choose: callers fall back to classifying the agent's text.
RuleTrigger.explicit (packages/opencode/src/altimate/rules/trigger.ts:309) treats an ambiguous result for said as "no opinion" and re-classifies text. So a long message whose explicit choice sits inside the first 2,000 characters ("Remember this for me: …", "Save this as a team rule: …") now loses that choice: if text reads the other way, classify(text) decides silently. A personal request becomes a decisive rule card whose why says "You asked to remember this as a rule", with no Memory option; the reverse can save a requested rule to memory.
The same gate changes proposeFor (packages/opencode/src/altimate/rules/remember.ts:270): a memory-tool payload over 2,000 characters that reads as a rule is now ambiguous, fails lint, and is written to project memory without owner review, although the comment above that line says such a rule must be sent back for restating.
Running the two explicit markers against the bounded head (≤2,000 characters, so backtracking stays bounded) before returning ambiguous keeps the bound and keeps a choice made inside the cap.

WARNING: The bound added here is not the last slow cue, and the length cap is gone.
This commit removes MAX_CLASSIFIED_CHARS and bounds only two patterns, but MEMORY_CUES still contains the glossary cue below (line 33): \bmeans\b.*\b(?:revenue|users?|customers?|metric)\b. With no cap, classify now runs it over the whole text, and .* rescans to the end of the line at every means whose clause has no keyword after it. A single-line 450 KB text of "means " repeated (~75,000 occurrences) is ~1.7e10 character steps - the same multi-second stall the cap used to prevent (the earlier review measured ~16 s on a comparable input). None of the new timing cases force a no-match path - each matches on the first pattern evaluated - so the suite would not catch it. Bound that alternative the same way (e.g. \bmeans\b[^\n]{0,2000}\b(?:revenue|users?|customers?|metric)\b) and add classifyRule("means ".repeat(50_000)) to the timing test.

SUGGESTION: The 500-character window is an undocumented, untested behavioural bound.
.{0,500} fixes the rescan, but it also quietly narrows what counts as a glossary cue: a definition whose keyword sits more than 500 characters after means on the same line no longer matches, and nothing pins that distance. The neighbouring bounds in this file are explained in comments (ASKED_MEMORY's 300-character clause scan, the remember lookahead's 2,000), and this pattern has now been rewritten twice for the same backtracking reason, so a short comment would keep the next edit deliberate. Two cases would pin the behaviour too: classifyRule("orders means " + "x".repeat(200) + " revenue").kind === "memory" and the same with the keyword past 500 staying ambiguous.

Remove the 300-character cap from the remember … for me memory check.
With more than 300 characters and no clause punctuation between remember and for me, ASKED_MEMORY does not match. The personal request is then classified as a rule and shown as a rule proposal. Scan for the clause boundary without a length cap, using a linear check, so the bound does not return.

Update ASKED_MEMORY to match “remember … for me” across any length of text that
contains no clause punctuation, removing the 300-character cap while preserving
the existing boundary and punctuation constraints with a linear scan.

Keep long glossary definitions classified as memory.
The glossary cue now matches revenue, users, customers, or metric only within 500 characters after means. For a longer definition with no other cue, classify returns ambiguous. On the training path, explicit then runs lint. Text over 140 characters fails lint, so the result is invalid. The agent receives a "not proposed" message that asks it to restate the definition as one short line. The definition is not saved to memory. The previous memory result did save it.
Restore a same-line match without the length bound. The .* form cannot be restored as a regex because it rescans the line from each means. Instead, find the first means on each line and test the rest of that line for the topic words. This check stays linear in the input length.

Update the glossary-term check in classify so topic words anywhere after the
first “means” on the same line still match, regardless of distance. Scan each
