📝 Rewrite README as a short showcase that funnels to the docs - #696
Rewrites README.md into a short landing page. The docs keep the detail.
Hero: the new brand/exports/readme-hero.webp. It is a self-contained card with rounded corners, so it reads the same on GitHub light and dark themes. The alt text names Kotlin Multiplatform, Compose Multiplatform, file pickers, and save dialogs.
Pitch and badges: a one-line pitch and four badges in the brand green: Maven Central, platforms (links to the support matrix), license, and docs.
Calls to action: Documentation · Quickstart · Try it in your browser · Roadmap to 1.0.
Installation: a single filekit-dialogs-compose:0.17.0 line in commonMain, a note on when FileKit.init is needed, and a link to the installation guide. There is no BOM; this matches the docs.
At a glance: four short examples (Compose launcher, suspend picker, file saver, PlatformFile operations). I checked the signatures against the current sources. The Compose launcher uses the onError overload, and a note flags the APIs that aren't available on JS and Wasm.
Modules table and a compact platform support grid (module × target) that links to the full matrix.
Who's using FileKit: six highlights, plus links to the docs showcase page (the full list) and the showcase discussion.
em dashes (the platform grid uses ❌, like the docs matrix)
the old hero
Docs links
Every docs page linked from the README is on main and live: /quickstart, /installation#platform-setup, /live-demo, /platform-support, /showcase, /roadmap, plus CONTRIBUTING.md and LICENSE. The setup note follows the platform setup table merged in #693, and the platform grid matches its "Targets per module" table.
Affected platforms
None. Documentation only (README.md).
Validation
Rendered the README with the GitHub Markdown API (gh api markdown, GFM) and checked it in GitHub light and dark styles: hero, badges, tables, and the <details> block.
Checked the API used in the examples against the sources: rememberFilePickerLauncher, FileKit.openFilePicker with FileKitType.File(vararg) and FileKitMode.Multiple(maxItems), openFileSaver, PlatformFile.write, div, copyTo, filesDir, cacheDir.
Reworked the README with a product overview, installation instructions, platform setup notes, and examples for file picking, saving, and file operations.
Added module and platform-support tables, a project showcase, contribution guidance, and license information.
Clarified platform limitations, including the use of FileKit.download on JS and Wasm, where saving, app directories, and path operations are unavailable.

Systems and components
observed — README.md (service) was modified; 1 changed file maps to changed impact.
Before / after behavior
observed — Modified behavior in README.md: Replaces the prior hero, feature list, and multi-artifact quick-start installation with a linked hero and badges, a 0.17.0 Compose Multiplatform dependency example, module-selection guidance, and platform-specific initialization notes for Android, JVM desktop, and Linux/Windows native.
observed — Modified behavior in README.md: Replaces the general quick-start usage examples with focused Compose and coroutine picker examples, including image and PDF/DOCX selection, multiple selection capped at 10 items, cancellation and error callbacks, saving, and file operations. Adds the limitation that saving, app directories, and path operations are unavailable on JS and Wasm, directing browser downloads to FileKit.download.
observed — Modified behavior in README.md: Replaces the modular-structure description and preview image with module-purpose and dependency tables plus a per-module platform-support matrix. Adds notes distinguishing JVM desktop from Kotlin/Native Linux and Windows targets, describing Web as JS and Wasm, and linking platform-dependent feature details.
observed — Modified behavior in README.md: Replaces the long annotated user-project list and documentation links with a concise production-app showcase, contribution instructions, and the opening of the credits section.

- Line 5: Update the README summary to distinguish native file dialogs on
supported native platforms from browser-based file pickers and downloads on the
web; do not imply that web provides a file save dialog.
- Line 35: Qualify the commonMain installation example for
filekit-dialogs-compose by showing it in an intermediate source set limited to
supported targets, or clearly stating that projects targeting Linux native,
Windows native, or watchOS must not declare it unconditionally in commonMain.
