Closes #78. Refs #10: this check-only slice does not complete the shared ECS/Rector presentation contract.

check --format=json emits one versioned report with command: check, native file/checker/diff findings, exact paths, status/exit and explicit completed/remaining work. Default text checking and explicit fix retain their behavior. Syntax still precedes style, and batches stop at the first failure without marking remaining files clean.

The parser validates the complete native ECS report, selected paths, totals and exit status. ECS totals can include system errors omitted from its file inventory: inconsistencies become operational errors, never clean passes or ordinary findings. The tool-owned worker/autoload path is preserved. An optional transport capability limits retained stdout/stderr during Symfony callbacks and fails rather than returning truncated data; existing ProcessRunner/ResultProcessRunner methods remain intact. No sandbox, absolute RAM bound or descendant isolation is claimed.

Integration and final layout validation:

  • Current signed HEAD 3ef8076d166b8d64f8b40ec92b81f95c8d7e26c8, tree 88681a8d89e4df83ec63148269fdcd8d1d2ebc28. Normal merge of current main 5a29931b preserves the PHPDoc skill, archive tests and both README changes. No force push or stack dependency.
  • Independent feature, fragment-correction and main-integration reviews are clear on the corresponding exact trees; no executable feature change was introduced by the main merge.
  • Own installation: 57 exact locked packages, zero updates, plugins/scripts disabled, manifest/lock unchanged. PHP 8.5.12 / Symfony Process 7.4.21 / ECS 13.3.9.
  • Full local composer check on integration tree 5bc19a81 (before the token-identical final whitespace correction): 173 tests / 1,412 assertions / one explicit unavailable DOM-free-runtime skip, strict Composer/platform, real Git+Composer archives, syntax and ECS passed. Guard admitted the single run at load 2.82; it completed exit 0.
  • Focused transport/parser/orchestration: 11 tests / 56 assertions, including real owned-process overflow/timeout cleanup and partial batches. Native integration: 4 tests / 34 assertions, including the command label. Installed help and whitespace pass.
  • Native cases include clean/findings, syntax failure, executable-config stdout contamination, empty selection, invalid format, paths with spaces/newlines, invalid UTF-8 and source preservation.

Canonical RST/README explain option/default, result schema, exits, incomplete work, native caches/skips and limits. JSON fix, automatic refactoring, agent detection and consumer rollout are excluded. Current-head hosted checks, Codex and CodeRabbit reviews remain required before merge; results from previous HEADs are not reused.

Final layout commit: multiline conditions in the worker, parser, native process runner and touched provider follow PSR-12 §5.1 and the project's one-operator-per-line preference. Every PHP token/comment/string is identical after excluding whitespace. Independent full-diff review, four syntax checks, native ECS dry-run with unchanged file hashes and focused parser/runner/transport tests (12 tests / 86 assertions) passed. No formatter-policy or boolean-fixer changes are included. Remote CI and both reviews must cover 3ef8076; older approvals are not current.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • check now supports --format=json and returns a single machine-readable report with findings, completion status, file counts, and errors.
    • Reports distinguish clean checks, style findings, syntax failures, and operational errors, and indicate when only part of the selection was checked.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on JSON output, report contents, and exit codes. Text remains the default, and fix continues to use text output.

This pull request adds an explicit JSON format for read-only checks. It validates native ECS reports, tracks completed and remaining work, and bounds captured process output. Text remains the default, and the fix command retains text output.

Changes: Structured check reports

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bounded process capture
src/Process/LimitedResultProcessRunner.php, src/Process/NativeProcessRunner.php, tests/Process/LimitedResultProcessRunnerTest.php
Adds separate stdout and stderr capture limits. The process runner throws on overflow and retains timeout behavior. Tests cover exact limits, overflow, timeout, and invalid limits.
ECS JSON transport and validation
src/Standards/EcsWorkerCommand.php, bin/ecs-worker, src/Standards/EcsJsonReportParser.php, src/Standards/StandardsRunner.php, tests/Standards/EcsJsonReportParserTest.php
The worker supports JSON formatting for checks. The parser validates report structure, paths, findings, totals, and process status.
Structured check execution
src/Standards/CheckResult.php, src/Standards/StructuredCheckRunner.php, src/Console/StructuredCheckOperation.php, src/Console/Command/CheckCommand.php, src/ServiceProvider/StandardsServiceProvider.php, tests/Standards/*, tests/Integration/StandardsTest.php
Adds syntax checks before ECS batches, structured status and work counts, and JSON output through the check command. Tests cover clean results, findings, syntax failures, operational errors, empty selections, and invalid formats.
Report contract and documentation
docs/structured-check.rst, docs/usage/commands.rst, docs/index.rst, README.md, .changelog/structured-check-json.md
Documents the report schema, statuses, execution limits, supported options, and text defaults. Adds the contract to the documentation index and changelog.

Explanation

The supplied change summary shows changes connected to Issue #78: structured read-only check reporting, ECS report validation, bounded process capture, command wiring, documentation, and tests. It states that JSON fix, automatic semantic changes, agent detection, consumer configuration changes, sandboxing, and the wider Issue #10 presentation contract are excluded. No unrelated change is identified.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 76.74% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 43 functions across 15 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The implementation evidence covers Issue #78 requirements: check --format=json, versioned native diagnostics, exact paths, work counts, syntax-before-style ordering, bounded batches, operational-error classification, limited process capture, preserved runner APIs, and the required test categories. The reviewed head is fd13a7a, but the supplied validation results identify earlier integration trees or state that current-head hosted checks and reviews remain required. Current-head strict checks, hosted CI, and exact-head review results are therefore not established.

Resolution

Provide validation results for reviewed head fd13a7a0bfc65efc8eb891933743e6fc0adf6b0f, including the required strict/platform/style and hosted checks and exact-head reviews.

A rabbit checks the paths in rows,
Then gathers JSON as it goes.
Each finding keeps its native name,
While bounded streams contain the game.
Text stays put; fixes wait their turn,
And empty checks have none to learn.

@coderabbitai review

Please review current HEAD fd13a7a0bfc65efc8eb891933743e6fc0adf6b0f, including the correction after the previous full review on 3ef8076: controlled RuntimeException selection failures now retain exit 2 in JSON, with mismatch/dirty-checkout regressions and preserved no-write behavior. Current-head full PHP 8.3/8.4/8.5, reusable, CodeQL, Changelog and Codex code/security checks completed successfully. The complete local qualification passed 174 tests / 1,428 assertions / one explicit platform skip; focused JSON integration passed 14 / 106. Those results and current SHA are documented in the technical thread reply, separately from the older SHA-specific validation section in the PR body.

PR75 is merged and its main ff88f6c CI is terminal green. No review is active; this request is made after the conservative 23:18 UTC window following the prior included review. Please evaluate this actual HEAD with the previous full-review context; the resolved individual thread is not treated as independent approval, and no merge gate is waived.
