Description

Fixes #10657. Changing "Inherited from" on an existing table in the table dialog did not match what was saved:

  • Removing a parent removed its columns from the Columns tab, but Save only ran NO INHERIT. PostgreSQL keeps those columns on the child as local columns, so they came back, editable, when the dialog was reopened.
  • Adding a parent to an existing table that doesn't have the parent's columns failed with child table is missing column "id".
  • The tree icon after Save showed the inheritance from before the save: the inherits arrow stayed after removing the parent and disappeared after adding it back.

Root Cause

  • Remove: since fix: remove inherited columns after parent removal #10504 (bdb652b77), reopened inherited columns carry inheritedid, so the dialog's removal (table.ui.js:703) now takes them out of the grid and sends them as columns.deleted. _check_for_column_delete() skips DROP COLUMN for any deleted column with inheritedfrom set, so only NO INHERIT was emitted.
  • Add: _check_for_column_add() (tables/utils.py:1516) skips new columns marked as inherited, leaving only ALTER TABLE ... INHERIT parent. PostgreSQL requires the child to already have all of the parent's columns (with the same type, typmod, collation and NOT NULL) and its inheritable CHECK constraints before INHERIT.
  • Icon: update() built the icon from res['rows'][0], which holds the table's properties fetched before the update ran.

Fix

  • tables/utils.py:1290, new _get_still_inherited_columns(): when parents are removed, returns the names of the columns that the parents still in "Inherited from" provide.

  • tables/utils.py:1330, _check_for_column_delete(): a deleted inherited column is now dropped when no remaining parent provides it. A column merged from several parents is kept as long as one of them remains; dropping it would fail with cannot drop inherited column. NO INHERIT is rendered before the column SQL, so the drop runs after the column is no longer inherited.

  • tables/utils.py:1307, new _get_inherit_prerequisites(): when parents are added, finds the parents' columns and inheritable CHECK constraints that the table doesn't have yet, using two new catalog queries:

    • templates/tables/sql/default/get_missing_inherited_columns.sql: the type comes from format_type(atttypid, atttypmod); collation and NOT NULL are copied too.
    • templates/tables/sql/default/get_missing_inherited_checks.sql: definitions come from pg_get_constraintdef().

The dialog only sends a basic type (e.g. character varying, not varchar(10)), which INHERIT would reject, so the definitions come from the catalog.

  • templates/tables/sql/default/update.sql:32 and templates/tables/sql/15_plus/update.sql:40: emit ADD COLUMN / ADD CONSTRAINT for those just before INHERIT.

  • tables/utils.py:1836, update(): the icon is now built from nodes.sql for the table after the update (looked up in its current schema), the same query the tree uses.

Known limitations:

  • Column defaults: columns added before INHERIT don't get the parent's column defaults. INHERIT doesn't require them, and copying a nextval() default would consume the parent's sequence.
  • Grid with several parents: when a column comes from several parents, the grid still removes it when its first parent is removed, although Save now keeps it. This is a pre-existing frontend issue; the dialog only tracks one parent per column.
  • Columns the child also declares itself (attislocal): these are dropped along with the removed parent's columns, because the dialog shows them as plain inherited columns.

Test Plan

  • New tables/tests/test_table_inherits_columns.py (msql + PUT, then checks pg_attribute, pg_inherits and the returned node icon): 5 passed on PostgreSQL 16.
    • Removing the only parent drops its columns; the icon becomes icon-table.
    • Removing one of two parents keeps the shared column; the icon stays icon-table-inherits.
    • Adding a parent with varchar(10) NOT NULL, COLLATE "C" and a CHECK constraint adds all of them before INHERIT, and the table inherits.
    • Adding a parent when the table already has one of its columns adds only the missing one.
    • Without the respective fixes, the scenarios fail with only NO INHERIT / only INHERIT in the SQL, and with the icons swapped.
  • python regression/runtests.py --pkg browser.server_groups.servers.databases.schemas.tables: 522 passed, 0 failed (49 skipped: EPAS-only compound triggers and PostGIS).
  • python regression/runtests.py --pkg tools.schema_diff: 9 passed, 0 failed.
  • pycodestyle --config=.pycodestyle on the changed Python files: clean.
  • Manual, remove a parent:
    1. Run CREATE TABLE parent (id bigint, name "char"); CREATE TABLE child (model "char") INHERITS (parent);
    2. Open Properties for child and remove public.parent from "Inherited from".
    3. Check that the SQL tab shows NO INHERIT followed by DROP COLUMN IF EXISTS id and DROP COLUMN IF EXISTS name.
    4. Save and reopen: only model remains, and the tree icon loses the inherits arrow.
  • Manual, add a parent back:
    1. On the same child, add public.parent to "Inherited from".
    2. Check that the SQL tab shows ADD COLUMN id bigint and ADD COLUMN name "char" before INHERIT public.parent.
    3. Save: no error, and the tree icon shows the inherits arrow.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Updating table inheritance now keeps child-table columns and CHECK constraints in sync with added or removed parents.
    • Adding a parent applies required column types, collations, nullability, and generated-column expressions before inheritance is applied.
    • Columns and constraints still provided by another parent are preserved when a parent is removed.
    • The table’s tree icon now reflects its updated inheritance state.

…0657

Removing a parent from 'Inherited from' removed its columns from the
Columns tab, but only NO INHERIT was run, which keeps them on the table
as local columns, so they came back on reopening. Drop them as well,
unless a remaining parent still provides them.

Adding a parent to an existing table failed with "child table is
missing column", as the parent's columns were skipped and INHERIT
requires the table to have them. Add the parent's missing columns and
CHECK constraints, using their definitions from the catalog, before
INHERIT.

The tree icon returned after saving was based on the table's properties
from before the update, so it showed the previous inheritance. Use the
table's state after the update instead.

Walkthrough

Table inheritance updates now prepare required columns and CHECK constraints before adding parents. When a parent is removed, the update drops constraints and columns no longer supplied by remaining parents. The response also uses current table data to determine the table icon.

Explanation

Issue #10657 requires removed inherited columns to be dropped after NO INHERIT, while columns supplied by a remaining parent must stay. utils.py now computes columns supplied by remaining parents and adds DROP COLUMN only when no remaining parent supplies the column. The update template places removal SQL before column SQL, and test_table_inherits_columns.py covers the only-parent and shared-column cases, including the returned icon.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The directly linked issue #10657 covers removal of a parent and removal of its columns. This pull request also adds prerequisite columns, NOT NULL changes, generated columns, and CHECK constraints before adding a parent; drops CHECK constraints during parent removal; and changes the post-save tree icon. These behaviors are not required by #10657. The added-parent behavior is tested in test_table_inherits_columns.py.

Resolution

Move the added-parent prerequisite logic, CHECK-constraint handling, and post-save icon change to a separately linked issue and pull request, or link active issues that require them. Keep this pull request focused on the column-removal behavior required by #10657.

…en changing a table's parents. pgadmin-org#10657

Adding a parent created its generated columns as ordinary columns and
left a column the table already has nullable when the parent's is NOT
NULL, and PostgreSQL rejects INHERIT in both cases. Add generated
columns with their expression, after the columns it uses, and set NOT
NULL on such existing columns before INHERIT.

Removing a parent left its CHECK constraints on the table, as NO INHERIT
keeps them as local constraints. Drop the ones that no remaining parent
also has, as is done for the parent's columns.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve child-local columns when removing a parent.

The column metadata query matches parent columns to child columns by name and does not inspect the child column's attislocal value. Therefore, a child-local id that has the same name as a removed parent's id receives that parent's inheritedid. The dialog sends it in columns.deleted, and _check_for_column_delete emits DROP COLUMN. PostgreSQL then removes the child-owned column and its stored values.

Keep the existing drop behavior for parent-only columns, but skip the drop when the column is locally declared on the child.

Handle existing rows before adding a required column.

If the child has rows and a new parent supplies a missing NOT NULL column, ADD COLUMN ... NOT NULL fails because the existing rows receive NULL. This also blocks Save when the parent has a default that could populate the column. Use an applicable default or backfill before setting NOT NULL, or make the unsupported case explicit before generating SQL. Apply the same fix to 15_plus/update.sql. (postgresql.org)

Drop the explicit NOT NULL when A was the last requiring parent.

When parent A requires x NOT NULL and remaining parent B supplies x but permits NULL, the prerequisite query selects the existing nullable child column and update.sql emits ALTER COLUMN x SET NOT NULL before INHERIT A.

When A is removed, the dialog removes the column row associated with A. _get_still_inherited_columns still contains x from B, so _check_for_column_delete correctly avoids dropping the column. The removal template emits only NO INHERIT A; PostgreSQL does not remove the explicit child NOT NULL. The child therefore rejects later NULL writes that B permits.

Track columns changed from nullable to NOT NULL by this operation. When their last requiring parent is removed, emit DROP NOT NULL unless a local requirement still needs the constraint. Apply the same correction to 15_plus/update.sql.
