Summary

Adds a Camera only mode: a take that records the camera alone, with no screen or window.

  • A new toggle on the recording bar, next to the source button, persisted as the cameraOnly recording preference. Turning it on also turns on the camera, through the same canTurnCameraOn check as the camera toggle, so a camera that check refuses also refuses camera only. Turning the camera off also turns camera only off.
  • While camera only is on, the source button, system audio and the cursor toggle are hidden, because all three belong to screen capture. Record never opens the source picker.
  • The take uses the browser pipeline on all three platforms. No native helper starts, no source is needed, no Linux portal is raised, and the macOS Accessibility preflight is skipped. Native code is unchanged.
  • The camera is recorded as the session's screenVideoPath, with no webcamVideoPath. The editor therefore treats it as the main video, so background, padding, roundness and shadow apply to it the same way they apply to a screen recording.
  • The recorder gets a clone of the preview's camera track. Stopping the take stops only the clone. Stopping the preview's own track would fire its onended, which reports "Webcam disconnected" and switches the camera off.
  • The take stores cursor mode "system" and writes no cursor telemetry, because the recording has no screen for a cursor to be on.

useScreenRecorder now has two shared helpers: captureMicrophone and beginBrowserTake (starts the clock, sets the stop and finalize listeners). The screen take and the camera-only take both use them, so the existing browser path's behavior is unchanged.

Known limitation: the camera-layer tools (background cutout, blur, crop, Full Camera) apply to the webcam layer. A camera-only take has no webcam layer, so these tools do not apply to it. Supporting them would mean changing the editor, so I left it out of this PR.

Testing

Automated

  • New tests:
    • src/hooks/useScreenRecorder.cameraOnly.test.tsx: a camera-only take records the cloned camera track as the main video. It makes no native or getDisplayMedia call, saves with webcam: undefined and cursorCaptureMode: "system", and leaves the preview track running. A take with no camera reports recording.cameraOnlyNeedsCamera and records nothing.
    • LaunchWindow.test.tsx: the toggle turns the camera on and stores both preferences, and stays off when the camera is refused. With it on, the source, system audio and cursor controls are hidden and Record never opens the picker. Turning the camera off turns camera only off.
    • app-settings.test.ts: cameraOnly is persisted. A missing or invalid value reads as off, and a non-boolean write is rejected.
  • npx tsc --noEmit and npx tsc -p tsconfig.test.json --noEmit are clean. Biome is clean on all changed files, and npm run i18n:check passes. The new strings are translated in all 15 locales.
  • npm run test: 5013 passed. The only failures are 4 tests in .github/scripts/stable-release-notes.test.mjs, which fail the same way on an unmodified main on this Windows machine.

Manual, Windows 11, built app from this branch (vite build + Electron), with the real webcam and microphone

Native binaries were copied from the installed 2.1.2 Store build, as the dev-build notes in AGENTS.md describe. The HUD was driven through CDP, so these runs confirm the renderer wiring but do not test click-through reachability.

  1. Camera only on: the camera turns on, and source, system audio and cursor disappear from the bar.
  2. Record: no source picker appears. The countdown runs, then recording starts.
  3. Stop: the editor opens with the camera as the main video, on the wallpaper. The timeline shows "No webcam". Padding 10% and 85% visibly resize the camera within the frame.
  4. Saved session: a single .webm (1920×1080), no webcamVideoPath, cursorCaptureMode: "system", no .cursor.json.
  5. With the microphone on, the take has a stereo audio track with live signal throughout (half-second RMS 0.0014 to 0.0239, with peaks where a test tone played).
  6. Export MP4 720p: 1088×720, 7.15 s, with an audio track (peak 0.451). The exported frame shows the camera framed on the wallpaper.
  7. Regression: with camera only off, the source, system audio and cursor controls return, and Record opens the source selector as before.

Not tested: macOS and Linux (the code path is the shared browser pipeline, but it has not been run there), and GIF export.

One observation that may be unrelated: on the first two launches the main process sat at 100% of one core and answered no IPC, so no HUD toggle worked, the plain camera toggle included. It did not reproduce on four later launches, and I could not capture a stack while it happened. This change adds only a preference field to the main process, so I suspect the borrowed 2.1.2 binaries running against main. I am mentioning it in case it matches something you have seen.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Record camera-only takes without capturing the screen. Enable the camera-only option in the recording controls; it also turns on the camera and requires a working camera.
    • Camera-only mode hides the source, system-audio, and cursor controls. Microphone audio can still be included when enabled.
    • Camera-only recordings can be edited in the editor, including setting a background.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on camera-only recording and its editor behavior.

Adds a Camera only toggle to the recording bar. While it is on, Record
starts a take of the camera alone: no screen or window is picked, no
native capture helper starts, and no Linux portal is raised. The camera
is recorded through the browser pipeline as the take's main video, so
the editor's background, padding, roundness and shadow frame it like a
screen recording.

- The choice is persisted as the `cameraOnly` recording preference.
- Turning it on turns the camera on, and is refused when the camera
check refuses; turning the camera off leaves camera only.
- Source, system audio and cursor controls are hidden while it is on,
since all three belong to screen capture.
- The take records a clone of the camera track, so stopping it never
fires the preview track's `onended` (camera disconnected).
- The take stores cursor mode "system" and writes no cursor telemetry.

Walkthrough

Adds a persisted Camera only recording mode. The HUD can enable the mode and hides screen-capture controls while it is active. The recorder uses a cloned camera track in the browser recording pipeline and stores the resulting take as the main video.

Camera-only mode has two state-consistency gaps. Pressing Record while the camera check is pending can start a screen take and then flip the HUD to camera-only. A failed camera acquisition can leave the HUD stuck in camera-only mode without a camera. Fix both before merging.

Explanation

The description is complete and follows the repository template. It explains the feature, linked issue, change type, release and desktop impact, testing, limitations, and known observations. The screenshots section does not include actual media, but this is non-critical because the UI change is otherwise documented and tested.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1276 asks for a way to record the camera without any screen. It has no further acceptance criteria. The PR adds a persisted cameraOnly preference and a HUD toggle (src/components/launch/HudControls.tsx, LaunchWindow.tsx). When the toggle is on, useScreenRecorder.ts records a cloned camera track as the take's main video (screenVideoPath, webcam undefined). It skips source selection, the Linux portal, and the native capture paths. It stores cursorCaptureMode "system" and writes no cursor telemetry. The focused read of src/hooks/useScreenRecorder.cameraOnly.test.tsx at the reviewed head confirms these behaviors. The test asserts that getDisplayMedia and the native Windows start are not called, that the recorder receives the cloned track, that the stored session has webcam undefined and cursorCaptureMode "system", and that the preview camera track is not stopped. A second test asserts that a missing camera reports recording.cameraOnlyNeedsCamera and records nothing. The camera-layer tool limitation stated in the PR is not an acceptance criterion of #1276, so it does not affect this result. Manual Windows results and the macOS and Linux gaps are non-coding evidence or untested platforms. They do not change the coding verdict. The cause of the reported main-process hang is not a requirement of #1276.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed areas connect to the camera-only objective. They are: the cameraOnly preference in electron/app-settings.ts, electron/ipc/handlers.ts, and electron/ipc/recordingPrefs.test.ts; the HUD toggle and icon in HudControls.tsx and HudIcons.tsx; LaunchWindow.tsx and its tests; the useScreenRecorder.ts hook and its tests; the cameraOnly fixtures in existing test files (RecStage.test.tsx, useScreenRecorder.noCamera.test.tsx, useScreenRecorder.prefsRace.test.tsx); the recording.cameraOnlyNeedsCamera and launch.json strings across locales; and technical-documentation/architecture/recording.md. The shared helpers captureMicrophone and beginBrowserTake were extracted so the camera-only and existing browser screen takes can share code. The PR says the existing browser path's behavior is unchanged, and the existing tests cover that path. The PR states that native code is unchanged. The PR description mentions no unrelated functional change. The dev-build binary copy is a local test step, not a committed change. No change appears unrelated to the objective.

Block Record while camera-only activation is pending.

If a screen source is already selected, the user can press Camera only and then Record while setWebcamEnabled(true) is pending. Record starts a screen take because cameraOnly is still false. When the camera check resolves, this callback enables camera-only mode without rechecking controlsLocked, so the HUD can indicate camera-only mode while the active take records the screen. Keep Record unavailable during the transition, and recheck the active recording state before applying its result.

Clear camera-only mode when camera acquisition turns the camera off.

If the saved preference has cameraOnly: true and camera acquisition fails, the camera effect persists camEnabled: false but leaves cameraOnly unchanged. This loader then restores camera-only mode without a camera. The HUD hides source selection, and Record fails with the missing-camera error until the user turns camera-only mode off. Clear and persist both flags when acquisition fails, or enforce their invariant when applying preferences.
