What

comark loads js-yaml even when a document has no YAML. The default components plugin imports the parser eagerly, and comark/render imports the serializer through frontmatter and component attributes.

This PR loads YAML when frontmatter or component props need it. The new async prepare(state) hook runs after every pre transform, before tokenization, and receives a readonly parse state. Custom markdown-it plugins can introduce YAML during synchronous tokenization, so the components plugin preloads YAML when one is registered. The default rules keep lazy loading. The synchronous markdown-it adapter keeps its eager YAML import at a separate entry.

Breaking import changes:

// Previously from comark and comark/render, respectively
import { parseFrontmatter, renderFrontmatter } from 'comark/frontmatter'

// Previously from comark/plugins/components
import { markdownItComponents } from 'comark/plugins/components/markdown-it'

Rules taken from components().markdownItPlugins now need the plugin's prepare hook to load YAML. Pass them to another parser and they throw on YAML props, so use the adapter there instead.

The workspace patches comark-content@0.4.3 to use the new frontmatter entry, keeping the docs tooling compatible. Markdown output stays the same.

Why

First load, gzip main This PR
comark/render 17.8 KiB 8.1 KiB
comark/core + comark/render 56.8 KiB 46.7 KiB
comark/core + comark/plugins/frontmatter 53.0 KiB 40.0 KiB
comark 68.5 KiB 55.6 KiB
comark + comark/render 78.9 KiB 62.5 KiB

Measured against e61eeab6, esbuild 0.27.7, minified ESM with code splitting, neutral platform, module/main fields, ES2020, gzip -9. First load sums the entry and its static imports, excluding dynamic imports. These are bundle measurements, not parse-time measurements.

Loading every emitted chunk costs more: comark/render totals 18.7 KiB, and comark + comark/render totals 80.7 KiB. Documents that need YAML load its chunks on first use. Each dynamic import points at a module containing only the parser or serializer it needs.

The package tests, package builds, docs lint, and refreshed published-size snapshot pass on Node 24.21.0. Fresh-process loading regressions fail on main and pass here; they cover ordinary components, indented and nested YAML, lists, blockquotes, typed props, source transforms, and streaming. The load-hook assertions skip on Node versions without registerHooks.

Related: #503 and #529. This doesn't change which default plugins register.

Walkthrough

The package adds a comark/frontmatter entry point and loads YAML code on demand. Component parsing moves into shared internals. Plugins gain an asynchronous prepare hook that runs after pre hooks and before tokenization.

Changes: Parser, components, and YAML loading

Layer / File(s) Summary
Frontmatter and YAML loading
packages/comark/src/internal/parse/*, packages/comark/src/internal/stringify/*, packages/comark/src/plugins/frontmatter.ts, packages/comark/src/render/index.ts, packages/comark/test/*
Parsing and rendering use separate internal modules. Frontmatter parsing, rendering, and YAML attribute serialization load YAML code dynamically when needed. Tests cover YAML loading and frontmatter behavior.
Component parsing and preparation
packages/comark/src/internal/parse/components.ts, packages/comark/src/internal/parse/source-stable.ts, packages/comark/src/plugins/components.ts, packages/comark/src/plugins/components/markdown-it.ts, packages/comark/src/plugins/{attributes,html,linkify,task-list,binding,emoji,math,mermaid}.ts, packages/comark/src/core.ts, packages/comark/src/types.ts, packages/comark/test/yaml-lazy-load.test.ts
Component parsing moves to a shared Markdown-It plugin. The components plugin uses prepare to load YAML when source contains YAML props or an unmarked Markdown-It plugin may generate them. Built-in Markdown-It plugins are marked source-stable.
Public frontmatter entry point
packages/comark/package.json, packages/comark/src/frontmatter.ts, packages/comark/src/index.ts, packages/comark/src/render/index.ts, packages/comark/test/{frontmatter,index}.test.ts, packages/comark/test/yaml-lazy-load.test.ts, docs/content/5.reference/1.parse.md
The package exports parseFrontmatter and renderFrontmatter from comark/frontmatter. The comark and comark/render entry points no longer export those functions.
Lifecycle documentation and integrations
docs/content/4.plugins/*, docs/content/11.compare/*, AGENTS.md, benchmarks/*, examples/1.frameworks/vitepress/*, patches/comark-content@0.4.3.patch, pnpm-workspace.yaml, test/bundle.test.ts
Documentation, examples, benchmarks, a package patch, and the bundle snapshot reflect the updated APIs, adapter path, preparation phase, and YAML loading behavior.

Medium · Correctness

comark/frontmatter example says content keeps one newline, code keeps two

The JSDoc tells readers parseFrontmatter’s content is '\n# Hello', but internal/parse/frontmatter.ts slices from idx + 4, so the returned content for the shown input is '\n\n# Hello'; anyone writing a parser against the example sees unexpected leading blank lines.

Fix: Change the example comment to content → '\n\n# Hello' (or drop the blank line from the input literal), matching what parseFrontmatter returns.

Migrate the comark-content frontmatter imports

The docs lint preset loads comark-content@0.4.3, whose Markdown plugin imports parseFrontmatter from comark. Removing that export can make pnpm lint fail when it loads the config. Update or patch comark-content to import from comark/frontmatter; its YAML plugin needs the same migration.

I checked this out in a scratch worktree and re-ran the evidence. The fix is real and the numbers hold up:

  • The new load-hook test fails on main (Expected: "not loaded", Received: "loaded") and passes on the branch.
  • Your bundle table reproduces on my own harness (browser/es2020 and gzip level 9, rather than neutral) to within 0.3 KiB: comark/render 17.8 → 8.1, comark/core + comark/render 56.8 → 46.7, comark/core + plugins/frontmatter 53.0 → 40.0, comark 68.5 → 68.6, comark + comark/render 78.9 → 79.3. So "comark stays the same size" holds, and the entry-chunk cost of the extra dynamic imports is as small as described.

On the components plugin. The note that it can't wait for an import reads to me as slightly broader than the constraint. The block rule is synchronous, but the Comark plugin doesn't have to load the module inside the rule: pre hooks are async and awaited before tokenization (ComarkParsePreState / ComarkPlugin.pre), so the plugin can load the module there and have the rule read a module-level variable. Only markdownItComponents under plain markdown-it needs it synchronously. I prototyped that in a scratch tree and confirmed both that the module can be deferred this way and that the output is unchanged (5 cases, including indented YAML blocks and the :height typed-binding path).

On the same harness and metric as your table, the chat configuration (comark/core + components + autoClose + html/task-list/linkify) loads 66.0 KiB gzip on first load, and 13.2 KiB of that is js-yaml — stubbing js-yaml out of that same graph gives 52.8 KiB. That is the onmax/vercel-chat#1 case in the description, so there may be roughly another 13 KiB behind the number quoted there.

Two things that came out of the prototype, in case they're useful:

  1. markdownItComponents would need its own entry (something like comark/plugins/components/markdown-it). A static re-export from comark/plugins/components pulls the eager import back into the graph, so keeping it exported from there cancels the change.
  2. The guard is easy to get wrong. Scanning for --- anywhere misses indented YAML blocks, and because the rule still matches, the props are silently dropped — a correctness bug rather than a size miss. It also fires on every horizontal rule. Mirroring the rule's actual trigger (a component-opener line immediately followed by ---, or an explicit yaml [props] fence) avoids both.

Minor notes:

  • The startsWith('---') guard matches the condition parseFrontmatter applies internally, and the assignments it skips were no-ops given the core's initial frontmatter: {} / frontmatterText: ''. No behavior change as far as I can tell.
  • Making comarkYamlAttributes async looks safe: it's only called from internal/stringify/handlers/mdc.ts, and no public entry re-exports it (comark/render exports only resolveAttributes/resolveAttribute).
  • Dropping parseFrontmatter/renderFrontmatter from the public entries seems necessary, since any static re-export re-adds the eager import. Nothing else in the repo consumes them, but it is a public API removal inside a perf PR, so it may deserve the top line of the release notes.
  • expect(Object.keys(entry).sort()).toEqual(['parseFrontmatter', 'renderFrontmatter']) will fail as soon as anything else is added to that entry; a toContain pair guards the same intent without that.
  • yamlLoads uses node:module.registerHooks (Node 22.15+/23+). CI is on 26.13.0 so it passes there, but the repo has no engines field and contributors on older Node would see it fail.

`renderMarkdown` loads the YAML serializer only for documents with
frontmatter or YAML component attributes. The frontmatter plugin loads
the YAML parser only when the document starts with `---`.

BREAKING CHANGE: `parseFrontmatter` is no longer exported from `comark`,
and `renderFrontmatter` is no longer exported from `comark/render`.
Import both from `comark/frontmatter`.
Prepare component dependencies after all pre hooks and preload YAML for
custom markdown-it rules that can transform source during tokenization.
Keep plain default parses free of the YAML parser.

Move the synchronous adapter to its own entry and migrate workspace
callers. Patch comark-content's frontmatter imports so docs lint can load.
Cover component containers, typed props, source transforms and streaming
with fresh-process load checks against the built package.

BREAKING CHANGE: import markdownItComponents from
comark/plugins/components/markdown-it instead of comark/plugins/components.

Follow-up on 88788b2. The prepare hook and hasYamlProps cover what I asked about earlier, and the full comark suite passes for me (72 files, 1959 tests, 4 skipped).

One thing I ran into in the source-stability fallback:

state.options.plugins?.some((plugin) => plugin.markdownItPlugins?.some((fn) => !isSourceStable(fn)))

emoji, math, mermaid and binding register markdown-it plugins but aren't marked source-stable, so components() together with any of them loads YAML on the first parse. With a fresh-process load hook, parsing plain markdown that has no component props at all:

plugins YAML loaded
[components()] not loaded
[emoji(), components()] loaded
[math(), components()] loaded
[mermaid(), components()] loaded
[binding(), components()] loaded

As far as I can tell those four don't write to state.src, bMarks, tShift, sCount or blkIndent, so they can't expose a YAML block during tokenization and could be marked source-stable. math() and mermaid() in particular are common in chat apps.

This doesn't show up in bundle size, since the YAML chunk stays lazy in the graph either way. It's a fetch on the first parse rather than a static import.

onmax added 3 commits November 6, 2026 14:25
…pter

Name the adapter entry in the error thrown when component rules tokenize
YAML props without the plugin's prepare hook, list every source-stable
built-in, and drop text that still said the parser loads YAML eagerly.

When the components plugin is not active, `autoClose` also skips component-fence completion (`::` closers).

The parser loads YAML only when the source may contain component props. A markdown-it plugin that Comark doesn't ship can add props during tokenization, so registering one makes YAML load before parsing.

Clarify the YAML loading condition.

The default frontmatter plugin can load YAML even when a document has no component props. Limit this statement to the components plugin.

Review comment at @docs/content/4.plugins/0.defaults/components.md at line 102:
The documentation attributes YAML loading too broadly to the parser. Update the
statement about plugins adding component props to specify that the components
plugin loads YAML when the source may contain component props; leave the
separate default frontmatter behavior unaffected.

hasYamlProps ran on every parse that hadn't loaded YAML yet and checked
every character of every line, which cost about 23 µs on the adversarial
bench document and 107 µs on the large one. Jump between `::` matches
with indexOf instead, and check `[props]` fences with includes. It can
still report props the tokenizer rejects, which only loads YAML early.
