tinyaml reads YAML 1.2 core values where js-yaml used JSON_SCHEMA: ~ and empty values become null, True becomes true, 0x1F, .5, 017 and .inf become numbers, and << merges. A component prop set to .inf or .nan now reaches the component as null, since props go through JSON.stringify. js-yaml's lineWidth, flowLevel and quoteStyle options are gone, and errors are YAMLError. tinyaml/js-yaml-v5 keeps js-yaml's exact values if you'd rather not change them.
I wrote tinyaml, so feel free to close this if you'd rather not depend on it.
Any feedback on the tinyaml is more than welcomed :)
Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Updated frontmatter serialization guidance to reflect the available options, including indentation and key sorting. Long strings are documented as never being line-wrapped.
Updated the comparison of Comark and Markdown-to-JSX.
Behavior Changes
Frontmatter parsing and serialization now use updated YAML handling. Serialization defaults and key-quoting behavior have changed, and parsing no longer explicitly rejects input containing multiple documents.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
Comark replaces js-yaml with tinyaml for YAML parsing and serialization. Frontmatter option types and documentation now use tinyaml’s StringifyOptions. Related tests and dependency configuration are updated.
Changes: Frontmatter YAML migration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Update dependencies and frontmatter types packages/comark/package.json, pnpm-workspace.yaml, packages/comark/src/types.ts, packages/comark/src/internal/frontmatter.ts
The package and workspace dependency entries replace js-yaml with tinyaml. Frontmatter option types change from DumpOptions to StringifyOptions.
Switch YAML parsing and serialization packages/comark/src/internal/yaml.ts, packages/comark/src/internal/stringify/attributes.ts, packages/comark/test/frontmatter.test.ts, packages/comark/test/render-html-bundle.test.ts, test/bundle.test.ts
The YAML helpers use tinyaml’s parse and stringify functions. The parser no longer checks for multiple documents, and the serializer no longer sets the previous defaults or removes quotes from colon-prefixed keys. Related tests update the prohibited dependency name, remove the line-wrapping assertion, and update the bundle-size snapshot.
comarkdown/comark#525: The PR changes frontmatter YAML parsing, but the supplied summaries do not show that it adds recovery from invalid YAML.
Possibly related PRs
comarkdown/comark#571: This PR changes the YAML helpers that PR #571 splits and lazy-loads. The frontmatter options and dependency references also overlap.
Merge Risk: Low · up to f674e
Switching to tinyaml is mostly a drop-in change. In the rare case where a component prop uses .inf or .nan, the value reaches the component as null. This is bounded and does not block the merge, but the owner should be aware of it.

Preserve non-finite YAML scalars at the JSON boundary
For component YAML props containing limit: .inf or fallback: .nan, the new core-schema parser returns non-finite numbers instead of the strings returned by the previous JSON schema. However, comark_block_yaml in packages/comark/src/plugins/components.ts:315-318 still passes every non-string value through JSON.stringify, so these props silently become null, including occurrences nested inside objects or arrays. The original value is therefore lost before rendering or Markdown round-tripping. Preserve these scalars or explicitly reject non-JSON-safe values recursively before passing them into the document's JSON encoding boundary.

Preserve non-finite YAML values across the JSON boundary.
tinyaml 0.1.0 parses .inf and .nan as non-finite numbers. (raw.githubusercontent.com) In packages/comark/src/plugins/components.ts, JSON.stringify(value) converts those numbers to null, including inside nested props. A YAML prop such as limit: .inf therefore reaches the component as null and cannot round-trip. Preserve these values in the prop encoding, or reject them explicitly instead of silently changing them.

Review comment at @packages/comark/src/internal/yaml.ts at line 10:
Update the YAML-to-prop encoding after parse(content) so non-finite numbers,
including nested values, are preserved across the JSON boundary or explicitly
rejected before JSON.stringify(value); do not allow them to silently become
null.

tinyaml writes keys that start with a colon unquoted, so stringifyYaml no
longer needs to strip the quotes js-yaml added.

Declare or document the Node.js floor that tinyaml introduces.
tinyaml@0.1.0 declares engines: {node: '>=22.12.0'} in the lockfile. comark adds it as a runtime dependency, and the package declares no engines field or other Node.js floor. Consumers on Node.js below 22.12 can see an engine mismatch warning on install. With strict engine checks, the install can fail. If your supported range includes those versions, use a tinyaml version that supports them or confirm the new minimum. Then declare it in packages/comark/package.json and document it.
