feat(booth): send idle and finished players back to the attract screen - #81
Conversation
[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none] At a booth, a lost game offers the same player unlimited retries while the line waits, and the idle return always goes to the hub. Booth mode only; outside it every game keeps its own retry screen. - --attract=<route> (default hub) is where the idle return and finished players go. Unknown names fall back to the hub with a warning. - Games call AppRouter.booth_game_over(score_line) at game over. A booth player gets --retries=<n> retries (default 0); after that the call returns true, the game skips its retry screen, and the router lays app/next_player_card.gd over it: GAME OVER, the game's score, "Thanks for playing!" and a six-second countdown, then the attract route opens. The count resets whenever the attract route opens. The session log records those endings as game_over. - One hook per game-over path, in Juan's and Trey's scripts: Heroes vs. Villains and Code City Brawl game_over(), the platformer's _reveal_results() on a loss, and the runner's game-over screen. - tools/booth/macos/setup.sh passes anything after -- to the game, so staff can set --retries or --attract in the login item. - tests/booth_routing.gd drives each game's real game-over path in and out of booth mode, the retry allowance, the card, the attract and idle routes and the session-log endings. Child launches go through tests/support/child_game.gd, which kills a child that overruns.

When
--attract=bay_area_blitzis used, the card expires andAppRouter._process()callsgo(attract, "game_over").BoothLog.route_changed()then sees the active game equals the destination, incrementsretries, and returns beforeend(reason). This leaves the previous session open and records the transition as a retry instead ofended_by: "game_over".Handle the
"game_over"reason before the same-route retry branch so the session ends and the next visit starts a separate session.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

⚠️ Potential issue | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winbooth_game_over accepts takeover while go is already transitioning. The existing transition then hides the newly presented card on success, regardless of its remaining countdown.
The promised six-second presentation is cut short, and the session can end as idle or menu rather than game_over.
This can occur when: An idle return starts its fade shortly before a knockout completion or run_finished callback reports game over.

hoppys-adventure-arcade/app/app_router.gd:195-197
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winCount beat-'em-up retries in the session log.
AppRouter.booth_game_over()consumes an allowed loss throughgame_overs, while both beat-'em-upretry_stage()methods restart the current stage in place without callingBoothLog.route_changed(). When the allowance is exhausted, the session ends withBoothLog.retriesunchanged. The session record can therefore reportretries: 0after an allowed retry. This is a localized correction with a direct data-quality benefit for session reporting.

145-147: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | 🏗️ Heavy liftExercise the runner facade for the runner handoff check.
tests/booth_routing.gd:145-150callsrunner_screen._finished({"score": 4242})directly. This bypassesgame_over.gd:bind(runner), the runner’srun_finishedsignal, and_finish_runresult construction. Related tests cover runner signal emission and runner UI behavior separately, but they do not cover the bound runner-to-booth handoff. Drive a realrunner_game.tscninstance through its terminal signal instead. Existing runner smoke coverage shows that this setup is practical. This is a recommended refactor with high regression-prevention value.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

…finish the card on exit [Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none] Addresses CodeRabbit review 5541793941 on #81: - --attract accepts only hub, beatem_up and runner: menus that wait for a player and start their own music. A game route would play by itself, collide with native retries and same-game sessions, and the platformer menu would be silent after a beat 'em up. - booth_game_over() declines while a route change is under way, which would otherwise hide the fresh card. - Turning booth mode off while the card counts down hands off to the attract route at once instead of stranding a paused game. - The session log counts each session's losses (game_overs), so stage retries that stay in the game show up; the report adds the column. - setup.sh appends the arguments left after -- directly. - tests/booth_routing.gd drives the real runner game (isolated leaderboard) through run_finished, checks the six-second start, a takeover during a route change, booth mode off mid-countdown and the loss count, asserts the child's exit code, and gives the child its own session-log folder. The runbook row covers configured retries.

Why
At a booth, a lost game offers the same player unlimited retries while the line waits. The idle return also always lands on the hub. The plan asks for game over to lead to the next player, and for both idle players and finished games to go back to an attract screen staff can choose.
What
Booth mode only (
--booth):--attract=<route>(defaulthub) is where the idle return and finished players go:hub,beatem_uporrunner, the menus that wait for a player and start their own music. Anything else logs a warning and falls back to the hub. With the default, the hub plays feat(audio): play "Send in the Rabbit" on the title screen and in booth attract mode #77's sung theme as before.--retries=<n>(default 0) is how many retries a booth player gets. Games callAppRouter.booth_game_over(score_line)at game over. While retries remain it returns false and the game shows its usual retry screen. After that it returns true, the game shows nothing, and the router covers the game withapp/next_player_card.gd: GAME OVER, the game's score line, "Thanks for playing!", and "Next player in 6". When the countdown ends, the attract route opens. The count resets whenever the attract route opens. If the attract scene ever failed to load, the router would try again after another countdown, not every frame.ended_by: game_over, and each session's end record gainsgame_overs, its losses including stage retries. The report adds the column.booth_game_over()declines while a route change is under way. Turning booth mode off mid-countdown hands off at once instead of stranding a paused game.tools/booth/macos/setup.shpasses anything after--to the game, so the login item can carry--retries=1 --attract=beatem_up.docs/builds.md(idle reset and the new Game over bullet), the booth runbook (setup flags and the "A player loses" row) and the README's booth paragraph.Testing (macOS, Godot 4.7.1)

For Juan and Trey to decide: the six-second card and the default of 0 retries are starting points for the booth cut. They're constants in
app_router.gdand a flag, so either is a one-line change.Summary by CodeRabbit
