Why

Nothing shows whether the build survives a show day unattended, or what frame rate it holds on the booth hardware. The runner is 3D on GL Compatibility and has no performance budget for booth hardware. The plan calls for an 8–10 hour soak and a frame-rate measurement on the booth machine.

What

--soak=<minutes> (app/booth_soak.gd, added by AppRouter only when passed, and shipped in exports so it runs on the real build):

  • Visits every route in turn (or those named by --soak-routes=, the hub always among them) and stays --soak-dwell=<seconds> (default 30) on each, with nobody playing. Time is wall-clock, the dwell counts from when the route has opened, and each route change is awaited; one that fails ends the soak with exit 2. --soak-cycles=<n> ends it after n full passes; --soak=30 --soak-cycles=1 makes a quick frame-rate probe of every route.
  • Every 5 s appends a CSV row to --soak-log=<folder> (default user://soak): route, frames per second, median, p99 and worst frame times, static and video memory, objects, nodes, orphan nodes and resources. A route's first second and route changes count as loading hitches instead.
  • At the end it prints and saves a frame-rate table per route (fps, p50, p95, p99, max, share of frames over 16.7 ms and 33.3 ms), built from bounded histograms so ten hours costs no more memory than ten minutes. It also reports the worst loading hitch.
  • Leak check: objects, nodes, orphan nodes and resources at each settled hub visit, which the game announces as SOAK hub <n>. It compares the second visit with the last; the first warms caches. Debug builds also compare static memory, which release builds report as 0. Growth beyond small limits makes the game exit 1. A route that won't open or results that can't be written make it exit 2; otherwise it exits 0. Fewer than three hub visits is reported as too short to judge.
  • A soak turns off the idle return and the game-over card (feat(booth): send idle and finished players back to the attract screen #81), ignores --route, and writes no session log (feat(booth): log each booth session locally for booth analytics #74), so its visits never count as booth sessions. It keeps the heartbeat (feat(booth): keep the booth game running with a watchdog, Mac kiosk setup and a staff runbook #76), so it can run under the watchdog.

tools/booth/soak.py wraps a run of a build or of this checkout's project (--godot):

  • It samples the process's resident memory with ps every 30 s into rss.csv, because release builds can't report their own.
  • It also samples at each SOAK hub <n> line and compares the second hub visit with the last, once there are three, so both samples come from the same point of a pass. The run fails above 25% growth.
  • It validates its numbers, drops soak options already in the command, kills and reaps the game on any failure, and fails a game that exits without a verdict.
  • It stops a run that outlasts its time by 10 minutes.
  • Each run gets its own folder under soak-results/: the game's CSV and summary, game.log and rss.csv.

Docs: docs/builds.md gains "Soak test and frame rate".

Testing (macOS, Godot 4.7.1)

Check Result
tests/booth_soak.gd (new, 18 checks) parsing (including infinite values) and settle length; percentile, overflow and exact slow-frame counts; the leak check on steady, growing and static-memory snapshots. In bounded child processes, ended by pass count so CI speed doesn't matter: one pass over every route (exit 0, a row per route, CSV columns, summary), three passes over hub, platformer judged steady, and the same beside a script that leaks nodes, judged growing (exit 1).
tools/booth/test_soak.py (new, 15 tests) argument placement and replacement, a folder per run, real ps sampling. With an injected sampler keyed to hub visits: growth fails, warm-up passes, three visits are needed. A non-zero exit, a missing verdict, the timeout, reaping after a sampler failure, usage errors (including inf and nan).
Headless soak, 2 minutes at fixed 60 fps, 8 passes hub objects 2792 → 2793, nodes 69 → 69, resources 644 → 644: steady
Rendered soak through soak.py, 1 minute, 5 s per route, windowed 5030×1409, vsync on about 95 fps on every route; p99 14–16.5 ms; worst frame 51 ms in Code City Brawl. Worst loading hitch: 5.1 s on the first visit to the runner menu. RSS rose 622 → 1225 MB during the first pass as routes loaded, which is why the check starts at the second pass.
python3 tools/tests/run_tests.py --jobs 4 60 passed, 0 failed, 10 skipped; exit_leak.py passes

For Juan: a full 8–10 hour run belongs on the booth machine, rendered and fullscreen:

python3 tools/booth/soak.py --minutes 600 -- "<app>/Contents/MacOS/<executable>" -- --booth

The 5 s first-visit hitch on the runner menu (M-series Mac) is worth a look before the booth; at the booth it lands when a player picks the runner.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added an unattended soak-test mode that cycles through arcade routes and reports frame-rate, engine-resource, and resident-memory metrics.
    • Choose routes, set the test duration, time spent on each route, cycle limit, and output location. Results include CSV samples and a summary; route failures, timeouts, and excessive resource growth are reported as failures.
    • Added a command-line runner that captures per-run logs and memory samples.
  • Documentation
    • Documented how to run soak tests, review results, and interpret exit codes.

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

Nothing shows whether the build survives a show day unattended, or
what frame rate it holds on the booth hardware.

- --soak=<minutes> (app/booth_soak.gd) visits every AppRouter route in
turn for --soak-dwell seconds (default 30) with nobody playing. Every
5 s it appends a CSV row: route, frames per second, median, p99 and
worst frame times, static and video memory, objects, nodes, orphan
nodes and resources. Frames on a route's first second, or during a
route change, count as loading hitches instead.
- At the end it prints and saves a frame-rate table per route (p50,
p95, p99, max, share of frames over 16.7 and 33.3 ms) from bounded
histograms, the worst loading hitch, and a leak check: counts at the
hub from the second visit to the last (the first warms caches), with
small limits. It exits 0 when steady and 1 when they kept growing.
It announces each pass ("SOAK cycle N").
- A soak turns off the idle return and the game-over card, ignores
--route and writes no session log, so its visits never count as
booth sessions. It keeps the heartbeat, so it can run under the
  watchdog.
- tools/booth/soak.py runs a build or this checkout's project with
--soak, samples resident memory with ps (release builds can't report
their own), and fails when it grew more than 25% from the start of
the second pass, once a third has begun. It stops a run that
outlasts its time and collects the CSV, summary, game.log and rss.csv.
- docs/builds.md gains "Soak test and frame rate".
- Tests: tests/booth_soak.gd (parsing, percentile and leak-check math,
and a short real soak in a bounded child), tools/booth/test_soak.py
(argument passing, RSS sampling, warm-up versus growth, the
three-pass rule, split log lines, the timeout, usage errors).

Possibly related issues

  • Issue 49: The soak runner adds repeated route visits and unattended run checks that support booth-hardware rehearsal, but it does not cover all hardware setup items.
Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 3d1b9

The soak tests now use cycle-based completion and include a real leak-verdict check. The remaining hard timeout is not shown to affect ordinary runs, so no merge-blocking issue is established.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3d1b9

The changes introduce a local, operator-selected diagnostic workflow without an identified increase in privileges or remotely accessible functionality. Process cleanup is limited to the directly launched child, so broader launcher behavior remains outside the demonstrated guarantees.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated authority is local: the invoking operator selects the executable and results directory, and the runner launches that command without requesting elevated privileges. Its effective exposure is the child process and filesystem accessible to that operator; no tenant or cross-service boundary is evidenced in this flow.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Operator-supplied command arguments reach list-form subprocess execution without shell evaluation. In-game route filters select only existing router entries, and AppRouter.go retains its busy, known-route, and resource-existence checks.
  • inferred — The wrapper trusts the selected executable’s verdict text and exit status; it checks the verdict prefix rather than validating its value. The repository’s producer pairs failed and growing verdicts with nonzero exits, which the wrapper rejects. An executable controlled by an adversary would already execute under the operator’s authority, so verdict spoofing does not establish an additional privilege boundary bypass.

⚠️ Potential issue | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The dwell and settle clocks start before router.go begins its asynchronous transition. Fades and loading consume both intervals, leaving less than the configured dwell after arrival and potentially no post-load settling period.

A newly loaded scene can be advanced immediately or have its initial unstable frames classified as play rather than loading.

This can occur when: A transition lasts longer than SETTLE_SECONDS, or a short supported dwell approaches the transition duration.

⚠️ Potential issue | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The slow-frame calculation floors thresholds to a bucket boundary. For 16.7 ms it counts the entire 16.5–17 ms bucket, including ordinary 16.67 ms frames that are faster than the stated threshold.

A healthy 60 fps route can be reported as having nearly all frames slower than 16.7 ms.

This can occur when: A rendered run is near 60 fps, or frames fall between 33.0 and 33.3 ms for the other reported threshold.

⚠️ Potential issue | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The percentile helper treats the overflow bucket as having an upper edge of 100.5 ms, although that bucket contains every frame at or above 100 ms. The summary consequently understates percentiles that fall in the overflow bucket.

The report can show approximately 100.5 ms percentiles for substantially slower frames, masking severe sustained performance problems.

This can occur when: Enough post-settle frames exceed 100 ms for p95 or p99 to land in the overflow bucket; for example, consistently 150 ms frames.

A zero process exit and non-growing RSS are sufficient to print passed, even when the game produced no soak completion verdict or artifacts.

The wrapper reports a successful soak that never completed or never ran.

This can occur when: An older build ignores --soak and is later closed normally, the wrong executable exits zero, or the game exits normally before reaching BoothSoak._finish.

Remove any existing --soak argument before appending the requested duration.

game_command appends --soak={args.minutes:g} without replacing an existing --soak option. The Godot parser uses the first valid --soak value, so a reused command can end the game earlier than requested or outlast the wrapper's deadline. Filter the inherited option before adding the runner-controlled value.

When two runners use the same output directory, each truncates game.log and rss.csv, while both read the shared game.log. The resulting cycle markers and RSS samples can be mixed, which can produce incorrect reports and RSS verdicts.

Use a unique output directory per run, or reject an output directory that is already in use before opening these files.

Add a real-controller negative soak test.

The fixed BoothSoak.growth() cases do not exercise _finish(). The child-process case runs only a steady soak and expects exit code 0. Add a deterministic controller-level case that produces growing hub snapshots and asserts a nonzero process exit. The Python leaky case only tests the stand-in process's exit status.

booth_soak.gd:
- Wall-clock time drives the deadline, the dwell and the samples, so
hit-stop's time scale and capped deltas can't stretch a soak. The
dwell and the settle period start once a route has opened.
- Each route change is awaited; AppRouter.go() now returns whether the
scene opened, and a route that doesn't ends the soak with exit 2
instead of recording samples under the wrong label. Results that
can't be written also exit 2.
- --soak and --soak-dwell reject non-finite values; short dwells settle
for half the dwell. --soak-routes limits a soak to some routes.
- Slow frames are counted exactly against 16.7 and 33.3 ms; a
percentile in the overflow bucket is capped at the worst frame
instead of reading as 100.5 ms. The frame window is cleared on each
route change, and the final hub snapshot needs a settled visit.
- Each settled hub visit prints "SOAK hub <n>".

soak.py:
- Measures resident memory at each "SOAK hub <n>" and compares the
second visit with the last, instead of arbitrary samples.
- Validates every number as finite (positive minutes, dwell and
sampling; non-negative grace and growth limit), drops soak options
already in the command, gives each run its own folder, always kills
and reaps the game, reads the log once more after exit, and fails a
game that never prints a verdict.

Tests: a real negative soak (tests/support/soak_leak.gd leaks nodes
beside it, skipped as a suite) must exit 1; --soak-routes keeps the
steady and leaking runs short; the wrapper's memory tests use an
injected sampler keyed to the fake game's hub visits.

Re review 5542002152: the 11 inline items are fixed in 2aa44d6 (replies are in the threads). The follow-ups and the nitpick are fixed in the same commit:

Follow-ups:

  • booth_soak.gd: dwell and settle start before the transition. Fixed. The route change is awaited (changing is set throughout), and on_route only advances once the router is idle and the scene has opened, so both periods count from arrival. Short dwells settle for half the dwell.
  • booth_soak.gd: slow-frame threshold floored to a bucket. Fixed. Each route keeps exact counts of frames over 16.7 ms and 33.3 ms. A test feeds 16.6, 16.8 and 40 ms frames and expects [2, 1].
  • booth_soak.gd: overflow bucket read as 100.5 ms. Fixed. percentile() returns INF for the overflow bucket, and the summary caps it at the route's worst frame. A test covers it.
  • soak.py: "passed" without a soak verdict. Fixed. A zero exit without a SOAK verdict: line fails, with a hint that the build may not know --soak.
  • soak.py: an inherited --soak argument. Fixed. --soak=, --soak-dwell= and --soak-log= already in the command are dropped before the wrapper's own are added. The argument test passes stale ones.
  • soak.py: concurrent runs sharing --out. Fixed. Each run creates its own <timestamp>-<pid> folder under --out (created exclusively), and a test runs twice into one --out.

Nitpick:

  • A real-controller negative soak. Added. tests/support/soak_leak.gd (skipped as a suite) leaks an orphan node every frame while a real soak runs in a child process. The suite requires SOAK verdict: GROWING: … orphan_nodes … and exit 1. A new --soak-routes=hub,platformer keeps that run and the steady one to seconds, so three hub visits fit even on a slow runner.

Local checks: booth_soak passes all 18 checks (56 s). The other booth suites and runner_scaffold_check (which uses AppRouter.go()) pass, and test_soak.py runs 15 tests with 0 failures.

- CI failed booth_soak: a fixed 24-second soak didn't reach every route
  on a loaded 2-core runner. --soak-cycles=<n> ends a soak after n full
passes (the minutes remain a backstop), so the suite's runs no longer
depend on how fast routes load: one pass over every route, and three
passes over hub and platformer for the steady and leaking verdicts.
It also makes a quick one-pass frame-rate probe.
- Addresses CodeRabbit review 5542177191 on #83: a route that fails
while the deadline hits is recorded before the finished guard, and
_finish() waits for the change under way before judging, so the
failure exits 2. A hub visit is counted once even when it ends a pass.

Re review 5542177191: its one inline item is fixed in dac69c8 (reply in the thread). It had no outside-diff or nitpick items.

CI on 2aa44d6 failed godot-tests in booth_soak. A fixed 24-second soak didn't get through every route on the loaded 2-core runner, where routes load slowly. dac69c8 adds --soak-cycles=<n>, which ends a soak after n full passes, with the minutes as a backstop. The suite now runs one pass over every route, and three passes over hub, platformer for the steady and leaking verdicts, so its runs no longer depend on runner speed. Locally booth_soak passes all 18 checks in 34 s, and the full suite runs 60 passed, 0 failed, 10 skipped.

Addresses CodeRabbit review 5542359308 on #83: the soaks' in-game
deadline is now 60 minutes, far beyond the 300-second child timeout
(CHILD_SECONDS), so --soak-cycles always ends them and the child
timeout is the hard bound.
