The complete series adds the index format, graph-building pipeline, C++/C/Python/Rust interfaces, CPU-GPU request queues, serialization, benchmarks, and tests needed to run FlowANN in cuVS. The integration reuses the CAGRA search cores through a graph provider. FlowANN is exposed as an experimental tiered graph storage mode through cuvs::neighbors::cagra, selected with index_params.graph_storage = graph_storage_kind::tiered. FlowANN is excluded from the default cuVS build.
The branch for step 5 of twelve is zhr/flowann-v3-05-multi-cta, with zhr/flowann-v3-04-single-cta as its immediate dependency. The native baseline is NVIDIA/cuvs commit 3dd62c143c78f3a019eecfee9fbae11cebe0d580.
Steps 1 through 10 form a stack. Steps 11 and 12 both start directly from step 10, so Python and Rust can be reviewed in parallel.
The incremental change contains 10 files, 797 additions and 29 deletions. Compare with the immediate dependency to review this stage. A comparison with the main branch also includes any unmerged predecessors.

Scope of this PR
Add multi-CTA traversal kernels and their generated dense-type instantiations.
Extend planning and dispatch to support explicit single-CTA, explicit multi-CTA and automatic selection.
Extend search tests across both execution modes and multi-CTA parameter validation.
Implementation in cuVS
The multi-CTA path allows several CUDA thread blocks to cooperate on a query. It shares the graph representation, row-request runtime and vector-distance implementation with single-CTA search. The planner now has both launch paths available and can apply the complete dispatch policy. The incremental change is limited to the second traversal mode and its tests, keeping construction and compression separate.
Reuse the shared multi-CTA traversal
The new multi-CTA kernel connects the tiered provider to CAGRA's existing implementation for several blocks cooperating on one query. Packed resident rows, host adjacency queues, dataset descriptors and source-ID restoration use the same underlying representation as single-CTA search. This PR adds the second traversal mode without introducing a second graph format or a separate request runtime.
Distribute seeds and size intermediate work
The provider supports distributing initial seeds across cooperating blocks, including seed counts larger than the graph degree. The planner and launcher account for each mode's candidate and workspace requirements. Request payloads may be processed in chunks, and queue reservations remain valid until all chunks are consumed. A shared search session can alternate algorithm, width and query shape without carrying stale request state into the next call.
Extend dispatch and generated kernels together
search_multi_cta_matrix.json, its generated kernel template and the fragment declarations register the dense specializations needed by the new launch path. Dispatch can now honor explicit single-CTA and multi-CTA choices or apply AUTO selection with both implementations available. Tests run the same packed-row, source-ID and fixed-seed scenarios through both modes, with additional coverage for large seed sets, chunked requests and repeated mixed-mode calls.
Behavior after this PR
Both dense search modes are available over an existing tiered graph. Callers can select a mode explicitly or use AUTO. No later builder or public API is needed to run the internal search tests.
Review focus
Check cooperation and termination between blocks, workspace sizing, algorithm selection and recall consistency across the two execution modes.
The example explicitly selects CUDA-copy transport. GDRCopy is available from step 3 and requires its development library and a working runtime driver. The builder option arrives in step 6 and benchmark options in step 9. The example enables only options present in this stage. FlowANN is disabled by default.

Configured CMake and completed the full native library and relevant test-target build at this branch commit.
All 31 FlowANN tests present in this stage passed. The cold-launch case ran in a separate process. 0 tests were skipped.
Native validation used CUDA 13.1, SM90 and GCC 13 with multi-GPU and CAGRA/HNSW support. Queue runtime tests used CUDA-copy transport.
Validation results refer to this branch commit. GDRCopy runtime remains untested because the environment has no /dev/gdrdrv. Billion-scale throughput and a measured performance comparison against the unsplit PR were not rerun.
The final native branch also passed a full library build and existing CAGRA/C API regression checks with FlowANN disabled. That check is recorded at the final branch and is separate from this stage's own build and tests.
Performance results
Native benchmark measured during this split
The following results were measured later in the series, at step 9 commit bbf098a0f25c177a38a51685efb65e35f4a27d7d. They are retained as full-series integration evidence. They are not measurements of this branch, and do not imply that this stage already includes the later builder, public interface or benchmark tooling.
The recorded workflow uses 4,096 vectors with 32 dimensions, 64 queries and exact CPU squared-L2 ground truth at top-k=10. The input contains 16 Gaussian clusters, with queries formed by perturbing dataset rows. Construction uses graph degree 16, intermediate degree 32, VPQ dimension 8 with 8-bit codes, 64 VQ centers, four groups and a 32,768-byte resident graph budget. Search uses CUDA-copy transport, two queues, itopk=128, 128 rerank candidates and a maximum of 64 iterations. Each configuration has one warmup and three measured rounds.

The timing columns summarize each metric independently across the three rounds. QPS includes query search and CPU reranking; loading, initial setup and warmup are excluded. query_count=0 selects all available queries, and a request for 96 queries executes the 64 available rows. Every measured round met Recall@10 >= 0.95. These are small-workload measurements of the benchmark workflow, with no unsplit-versus-split speedup claim.
Historical CAGRA API integration check
The following results are retained from the original complete PR #2675. They compare the direct FlowANN entry point with the unified CAGRA API using the same search engine and hierarchical Wiki88M index. They were not rerun at this branch commit and do not measure Python or Rust wrapper overhead.

QPS is the median of process-level medians and includes query transfer and CPU exact reranking. Batch 1 uses 2,000 queries, multi-CTA/team32, two rerank threads, one queue and 128 seeds. One control process and two API processes each have one warmup and one measured round. Batch 10,000 uses 10,000 queries, single-CTA/team8, 90 rerank threads, 44 queues and 200 seeds. Three control processes and four API processes each have one warmup and five measured rounds, with additional large-batch runs alternating API and control. Queue statistics and persistent pollers are enabled in both paths. The representative checks showed no consistent API overhead; they do not establish equivalence for every configuration.
Historical Wiki88M FlowANN versus sharded CAGRA
The corrected September 20/23, 2026 system sweep from the original PR is retained below. It compares one GPU running FlowANN with two GPUs running sharded CAGRA, using the hardware and run environment recorded in that PR. FlowANN uses GDRCopy in this historical sweep; the current split runtime checks use CUDA-copy.
The dataset contains 87,555,327 base vectors, 10,000 queries and 768 dimensions. Both systems use graph degree 32, VPQ 192 x 8-bit codes and 10,000 VQ centers, with Recall@10 evaluated against the first ten ground-truth IDs. Their graphs, trained codebooks, sharding and entry points differ. This is a comparison of the complete systems at specified recall thresholds, rather than an experiment that changes only the search kernel.
For batch 1, the tools issue 10,000 sequential searches with multi-CTA/team32 and two CPU rerank threads. Batch 10,000 uses single-CTA/team8 and 90 rerank threads. FlowANN uses one queue and 128 seeds for batch 1, and 44 queues and 200 seeds for batch 10,000. Its remaining settings include six groups, 24-bit local IDs, a 7,529,758,208-byte resident graph budget, sync_window_scale=10 and sync_drop_threshold=51. Both systems use hashmap_min_bitlen=14.
Each selected configuration has three independent process runs. At each threshold, the table selects the highest median QPS whose minimum measured recall meets that threshold. Reported recall is that minimum; configuration means itopk / max_iterations / search_width / rerank_candidates. QPS includes query transfer, GPU search, candidate preparation and CPU exact reranking. It excludes index loading, initial JIT compilation and recall calculation. Relative QPS is the raw throughput ratio minus one, without GPU-count normalization.

At batch 1, FlowANN reaches 74.3%, 63.6% and 75.2% of the two-GPU CAGRA QPS at the respective thresholds. At batch 10,000, the median differences are +2.4% and +0.9% at recall targets 0.90 and 0.95. The QPS ranges overlap at 0.95, so that median difference does not establish a stable advantage. CAGRA's failure to reach 0.99 within the measured settings does not imply that other settings cannot reach it. The historical measurements do not establish performance parity between the original integration and these twelve branches.
Preservation of the complete implementation
Combining the Python branch from step 11 and the Rust branch from step 12 reproduces the complete integration at commit 8a774792167759e1eb7d34942d46021730e2debc, except for the internal split documentation in cpp/src/neighbors/detail/flowann/README.md. Incremental patch reconstruction and both application orders of the language patches have been checked. The comparison covers the final combined implementation. Intermediate stages contain their own and preceding functionality, with their build and test results recorded above.

Make the installed GDRCopy runtime library discoverable.
With CUVS_ENABLE_FLOWANN_SEARCH=ON and CUVS_FLOWANN_USE_GDRCOPY=ON, the shared cuvs target links GDRCopy as a private dependency. The installed libcuvs then depends on the GDRCopy shared library at load time. Its install RPATH is $ORIGIN only. The LINK_ONLY interface entries apply to consumer link lines and do not add a search path to the installed library.
If GDRCopy is installed outside the loader's default search paths, the installed libcuvs can fail to load unless the environment supplies the path. Either package the GDRCopy runtime library beside libcuvs, or provide a supported runtime search path for the installed library. Then verify the installed artifact in a build that uses GDRCopy from a non-default directory.

Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Filter the full seed buffer before the final merge.
When num_seeds > internal_topk + candidate_capacity, FlowANN sizes result_buffer_size to hold all seeds, but this loop leaves the extra entries unfiltered. With max_iteration == 1, the final merge can select those entries and return a result excluded by sample_filter. Iterate to result_buffer_size so every candidate eligible for the final merge is filtered. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Reset dependent state when the graph row count changes.
Each update_graph overload replaces inner_graph_ and cross_graph_ without changing source_indices_, subgraph_offsets_, or subgraph_ids_. Search checks only whether the subgraph metadata exists, then the device provider indexes it by graph node. A matching search context does not validate these vector lengths. A larger replacement graph can therefore cause an out-of-bounds device read.
Seed rebuilding also occurs after the graph members are committed. If the new graph is smaller than a stored seed ID, rebuilding throws after the replacement and leaves the old seed state attached to the new graph. Clear all dependent state before a row-count change. If the row count is unchanged, rebuilding can refresh the cached seed rows safely.

Check pending ring space before reserving deferred results.
Thread 0 pushes up to search_width pending entries after each reservation. It does not check state->pending.available() first. need_wait runs later, after the push. When sync_window exceeds the ring capacity, the forced wait does not bound the backlog. A backlog above 511 entries can then wrap head onto live pending_entry slots. The overwritten reservations are not released by finalize(), and size() and empty() return wrong values after the wrap.
Check the free space before reserving. Skip the reservation when the ring cannot hold the new entries.

Synchronize the search stream before releasing the search lease on an exception path.
If a later batch throws, an earlier kernel can still wait for a queue result because the success-path synchronization has not executed. The destructor can then release the last search lease and pause the pollers before that kernel completes. Synchronize the stream with RAFT_CUDA_TRY_NO_THROW while the lease is still active.

Return early when the query batch is empty.
If queries.extent(0) == 0 and params.max_queries == 0, Line 358 sets params.max_queries to 0. Line 360 then throws "FlowANN max_queries must be positive". The caller passed valid empty views, so the search should do nothing and return. Add the early return after the shape checks and before planning. The cuVS test checklist asks for empty edge cases.

A poller failure leaves GPU waiters spinning with no recovery.
poll_batch throws when a request carries row_id >= row_count_. A CUDA copy error also throws. In both cases poll stores poller_error_ and the thread exits. The commands in that queue then never get a result_sequence write. Every CTA that waits in while (!result_ready(...)) spins without end.
The search thread blocks in sync_stream and never reaches throw_if_failed(). The process hangs and the error is never reported. A realistic trigger exists: update_graph(..., validate_edges = false) (flowann.hpp Line 400) accepts unchecked cross edges. Packed inner neighbor ids are not range-checked either.
For an invalid row id, do not throw:
Publish an empty row (count column 0).
Record the error, then continue serving the queue.
Report the error at the next release_search, pause, or resume.
For fatal CUDA errors, you also need a device-visible abort flag that waiting kernels can check.

Overview
This series integrates FlowANN from our OSDI 2026 paper Disentangling Graph Dependencies for Efficient Billion-Scale GPU Vector Search into cuVS. FlowANN keeps a compressed subset of graph edges on the GPU, stores the remaining edges in CPU memory, and fetches CPU-resident edges asynchronously during search.
The complete series adds the index format, graph-building pipeline, C++/C/Python/Rust interfaces, CPU-GPU request queues, serialization, benchmarks, and tests needed to run FlowANN in cuVS. The integration reuses the CAGRA search cores through a graph provider. FlowANN is exposed as an experimental tiered graph storage mode through
cuvs::neighbors::cagra, selected withindex_params.graph_storage = graph_storage_kind::tiered. FlowANN is excluded from the default cuVS build.co-author: Haoru Zhao zhaohaoru@sjtu.edu.cn, Jingkai He hjk020101@sjtu.edu.cn, Jingyao Zeng zengjingyao@sjtu.edu.cn, Shenghan Gao gsh20040816@gmail.com
Role in the series
The branch for step 5 of twelve is
zhr/flowann-v3-05-multi-cta, withzhr/flowann-v3-04-single-ctaas its immediate dependency. The native baseline is NVIDIA/cuvs commit3dd62c143c78f3a019eecfee9fbae11cebe0d580.Steps 1 through 10 form a stack.
The series follows the split discussed in PR #2932. See the original complete PR #2675 for the full integration background.
Scope of this PR
Tests run the same packed-row, source-ID and fixed-seed scenarios through both modes, with additional coverage for large seed sets, chunked requests and repeated mixed-mode calls.Behavior after this PR
Build and usage scope
The example explicitly selects CUDA-copy transport. GDRCopy is available from step 3 and requires its development library and a working runtime driver. The builder option arrives in step 6 and benchmark options in step 9. The example enables only options present in this stage. FlowANN is disabled by default.
Testing and validation
Test results at this branch commit
The counts below come from the saved validation records for this branch commit,
80345102c53638dd80566b505b5e570a643ba3c9. Conditional skips are listed separately.Test coverage and environment
GDRCopy runtime remains untested because the environment has no
/dev/gdrdrv.
The following results were measured later in the series, at step 9 commit
bbf098a0f25c177a38a51685efb65e35f4a27d7d. They are retained as full-series integration evidence. They are not measurements of this branch, and do not imply that this stage already includes the later builder, public interface or benchmark tooling. The recorded workflow uses 4,096 vectors with 32 dimensions, 64 queries and exact CPU squared-L2 ground truth at
top-k=10. The input contains 16 Gaussian clusters, with queries formed by perturbing dataset rows. Construction uses graph degree 16, intermediate degree 32, VPQ dimension 8 with 8-bit codes, 64 VQ centers, four groups and a 32,768-byte resident graph budget. Search uses CUDA-copy transport, two queues,itopk=128, 128 rerank candidates and a maximum of 64 iterations. Each configuration has one warmup and three measured rounds.single_ctamulti_ctamulti_ctaThe timing columns summarize each metric independently across the three rounds. QPS includes query search and CPU reranking; loading, initial setup and warmup are excluded.
query_count=0selects all available queries, and a request for 96 queries executes the 64 available rows. Every measured round met Recall@10 >= 0.95. These are small-workload measurements of the benchmark workflow, with no unsplit-versus-split speedup claim.Historical CAGRA API integration check
The following results are retained from the original complete PR #2675. They compare the direct FlowANN entry point with the unified CAGRA API using the same search engine and hierarchical Wiki88M index. They were not rerun at this branch commit and do not measure Python or Rust wrapper overhead.
256/32/2/32256/90/2/64QPS is the median of process-level medians and includes query transfer and CPU exact reranking.
Its remaining settings include six groups, 24-bit local IDs, a 7,529,758,208-byte resident graph budget,
sync_window_scale=10andsync_drop_threshold=51. Both systems usehashmap_min_bitlen=14.Each selected configuration has three independent process runs. At each threshold, the table selects the highest median QPS whose minimum measured recall meets that threshold. Reported recall is that minimum; configuration means
itopk / max_iterations / search_width / rerank_candidates. QPS includes query transfer, GPU search, candidate preparation and CPU exact reranking. It excludes index loading, initial JIT compilation and recall calculation. Relative QPS is the raw throughput ratio minus one, without GPU-count normalization.512/16/2/32512/16/2/32512/20/2/32512/16/2/32512/28/2/32512/28/32/32512/28/2/1664/28/2/32512/28/4/32512/28/4/32512/28/8/32512/28/8/32At batch 1, FlowANN reaches 74.3%, 63.6% and 75.2% of the two-GPU CAGRA QPS at the respective thresholds.
Combining the Python branch from step 11 and the Rust branch from step 12 reproduces the complete integration at commit
8a774792167759e1eb7d34942d46021730e2debc, except for the internal split documentation incpp/src/neighbors/detail/flowann/README.md. Incremental patch reconstruction and both application orders of the language patches have been checked. The comparison covers the final combined implementation. Intermediate stages contain their own and preceding functionality, with their build and test results recorded above.Co-authored-by: Jingkai He hjk020101@sjtu.edu.cn
