Document the new public tiered VPQ build overloads in a form the API generator can read.
These four cagra::build(res, params, vpq_params, host_standard_dataset_view<T>) overloads are new public API. The Doxygen block is attached to the CUVS_DECLARE_TIERED_PQ_BUILD macro, not to the generated declarations. The block also has no @param or @return tags. fern/pages/cpp_api/cpp-api-neighbors-cagra.md documents the new parameter types and graph_storage(), but it does not list these overloads.
Write the four declarations out with full Doxygen comments, or add @copydoc-style blocks per overload. Then regenerate the Fern page. Each block must state the requirements:
graph_storage == tieredattach_dataset_on_build == true- the returned index owns its dataset
- the input may be released after the call
As per coding guidelines: "Doxygen documentation required for all public functions". As per path instructions: "Doxygen-style source comments for all public functions/classes, consumed by the Fern API generator" and "If PR changes public APIs without updating docs, flag as HIGH priority".

Validate tiered-search view shapes before dispatch.
The tiered branch bypasses CAGRA's row-count, k, and dimension checks. A mismatched view can therefore reach FlowANN instead of raising the standard precondition error.

Pass the adjusted degrees to iterative_build_graph; otherwise the host graph copy uses the wrong shape.
check_graph_degree can lower the local intermediate_degree and graph_degree when n_rows is small. This happens when intermediate_graph_degree >= n_rows. The iterative branch still calls iterative_build_graph(res, params, ...) with the original params. The device graph therefore has params.graph_degree columns.
host_graph is then allocated as n_rows x graph_degree with the adjusted degree. raft::copy copies host_graph.size() contiguous elements from a wider row-major device matrix. Each row of the result then holds a mix of neighbors from different rows, and no error is reported.
The existing build_from_device_matrix does not have this mismatch, because it installs the returned graph with its own shape. The NN-descent/IVF-PQ path in this function already uses the adjusted degrees.

Validate current source indices and legacy metrics during deserialization.
The current loader checks only the source-index mapping length. A malformed file can install a value greater than or equal to n_rows. FlowANN search uses this mapping to emit original row IDs, so search can return an out-of-range result ID.
The legacy loader also passes its metric directly to the constructor. The constructor stores it without checking the supported metric set. Reject unsupported metrics for the applicable dense or VPQ legacy format.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Single-CTA radix top-k reuses stale candidates and can return duplicate neighbors.
On the single-CTA path, result_position == nullptr. In that case expand writes indices and distances only for i < state->total_children. The value total_children is often smaller than candidate_capacity(search_width) = (search_width + 2) * graph_degree. The two extra buffer rows are often unused, and cross rows can be pending or reserved-but-dropped. Entries in [total_children, candidate_capacity) therefore keep the children from an earlier iteration.
The bitonic path ignores these entries because it merges only computed_children_this_iteration children. The radix path does not. search_core calls topk_by_radix_sort over the full result_buffer_size. That path runs when num_itopk_candidates > 256, for example graph_degree = 64 with search_width >= 3.
A stale child can already be in the itopk list, possibly with the parent MSB set. The radix sort then selects its unflagged copy from the candidate tail again. The result is a duplicate node in the itopk list. The node can be expanded again as a parent, and it can appear twice in the output. Recall also drops.
Invalidate the unused candidate tail on each expansion.

State that GDRCopy is the default transport and must be installed.
CUVS_FLOWANN_USE_GDRCOPY defaults to ON in cpp/CMakeLists.txt (Line 89). When CUVS_ENABLE_FLOWANN_SEARCH=ON and the GDRCopy package is missing, rapids_find_package(GDRCopy REQUIRED) fails at configure time.

Hi @ZhaoHaoRu , do you have ideas on how to further break down this PR? Do you think these 3 CMake options represent an opportunity to stack the diff? In general, reviewers get review fatigue around the 1500-2000 line diff. I'd like to keep each PR within that limit.
|
Hi @divyegala, thanks for the suggestion! I also noticed that the current split isn’t quite appropriate, especially because the C++ integration PR still contains most of the changes. I’ve prepared a revised five-PR stack to distribute the changes more evenly:
I’m still working on this revised split and validating each stage. Any further suggestions are welcome! |
|
Thank you so much @ZhaoHaoRu !
|
|
Thanks @divyegala! Would this revised nine-PR split work?
Each PR would include corresponding tests, and Python/Rust could proceed in parallel. Would those groupings be acceptable? |
|
Hi @ZhaoHaoRu ! This looks very close to the right split. Thanks so much on working with me to figure out the right order!
|
|
Thanks @divyegala! I agree with both suggestions. I'll revise items 6 and 7 as follows, keeping the other items as proposed:
Each would be a separate PR with the corresponding tests. Python and Rust bindings can still proceed in parallel once the C API is in place. Unless you have any further concerns, I'll proceed with this plan. |
|
Thanks @ZhaoHaoRu ! Plan looks great to me 😄 |
|
Hi @divyegala, thanks for confirming the plan! I've completed the revised split and opened all 12 PRs following our discussion.
Steps 1 through 10 build on each other in order. Python and Rust both depend directly on step 10 and can be reviewed in parallel. The revised series is ready for review, starting with #2977. Each stage includes its corresponding tests and validation results. Thanks again for your guidance on the split! |
Overview
Integrate FlowANN from our OSDI 2026 paper Disentangling Graph Dependencies for Efficient Billion-Scale GPU Vector Search into cuVS through CAGRA's C++ API. FlowANN keeps a compressed subset of graph edges on the GPU and stores the remaining edges in CPU memory. GPU search kernels request CPU-resident adjacency rows asynchronously through a queue runtime.
Callers select
index_params.graph_storage = graph_storage_kind::tieredand use CAGRA's existing build, search and serialization entry points. The tiered index owns its graph representation, reordered dataset and queue state. Ordinary device graph storage remains the default, and FlowANN is excluded from the default build. The complete series adds C++, C, Python and Rust support together with benchmark tooling. PR2 delivers the C++ implementation and tests after the graph-provider refactoring in PR1. Benchmark executables and additional language interfaces follow in separate PRs.

FlowANN step 2/5 in the integration series
This PR is the step 2 contribution to the split requested on NVIDIA/cuvs#2675. The series is organized as follows:
Step 2 supplies the complete native implementation behind the tiered CAGRA option. Review can follow the lifecycle from graph construction and grouping through ownership, search and serialization. Queue synchronization and index moves need particular attention because the GPU kernels and host workers reference the same graph state.
The intended user-visible result of this step is a C++ index that can be built, searched, saved and loaded without benchmark tooling or additional language bindings. The existing CAGRA default path remains available when the experimental implementation is disabled.
Reviewing this step
View only the changes introduced by FlowANN step 2. The focused comparison uses this step's prepared parent branch and excludes changes inherited from earlier steps. It contains 39 changed files.
The upstream PR targets
NVIDIA/cuvs:mainand is initially a draft because its prerequisite steps have not merged. Until the prerequisite code reaches main and this branch is updated, GitHub's upstream Files changed view includes earlier steps as well. The focused comparison above isolates the contribution described here.Implementation in cuVS
Reuse the CAGRA search core
The FlowANN tiered provider uses the graph-provider interface from PR1. It reads resident edges from the compressed GPU graph and retrieves non-resident edges through CPU/GPU request queues. Both single-CTA and multi-CTA search use the shared CAGRA traversal core.
CAGRA and FlowANN share candidate sorting, visited-node deduplication, distance computation and iterative search logic. FlowANN supplies its own planning, request state and result ingestion around those operations. The implementation supports dense-vector and VPQ-F16 datasets without maintaining a separate copy of the CAGRA traversal loop.
Add the tiered index and graph-building pipeline
A tiered
cagra::indexowns an internal implementation containing:The integrated builder first constructs a complete CAGRA graph. It then groups and reorders nodes, sorts edges and divides the graph between GPU and CPU storage.
device_graph_budget_bytescontrols the packed resident-edge budget. It excludes vector storage, queues and build/search workspaces, and construction still needs the complete intermediate graph. The default grouping method uses hierarchical k-means, with at most 16 child groups per node and capacity repair at each level. Group count and local-ID width may be specified explicitly or derived from dataset size and group capacity. Reordering updates the dataset and ID mapping so callers continue to receive original dataset IDs.
Public
cagra::build()constructs an owning tiered index from vectors. Its compressed overload accepts full-precision host vectors and VPQ parameters. Internalbuild_from_cagra()andgroup_graph()helpers support conversion and grouping inside the implementation; they do not create separate public FlowANN APIs.Add the xCopier queue runtime
The native index owns an internal
search_contextthat creates request queues and host polling workers. When the GPU expands a node, it can submit a request for a CPU adjacency row. A polling worker retrieves the row and writes the result into a GPU-visible buffer. Later traversal iterations consume completed results and reclaim queue capacity. The queue implementation handles batched publication, result visibility, deferred reclamation, worker pause/resume, CUDA device binding and exception propagation. Optional
tiered_search_paramsconfigure queues, seeds and synchronization throughcagra::search().keep_pollers_running=trueretains active workers between calls and consumes CPU while the index is idle. The index retains its queue state across searches. Searches on one tiered index are serialized and complete before returning, and callers must use the CUDA device on which the index was created.GDRCopy is the default transfer path when FlowANN is enabled.
CUVS_FLOWANN_USE_GDRCOPY=OFFselects the CUDA-copy path. The two transports have separate runtime requirements; this PR's local checks do not establish equivalent performance or Recall between them.Integrate serialization and ownership
Tiered indexes use CAGRA's
serialize()anddeserialize()entry points. The serialized payload contains the tiered graph and its owned dataset, with a distinct format marker. Graph-only serialization is unsupported for tiered storage. The internal bundle and queue runtime remain owned by the public index across moves and repeated searches. The queue context and session are destroyed before the graph and dataset they reference. Ordinary CAGRA retains its existing serialization format and graph-only behavior where supported.
Dataset replacement, extension, merge, multi-partition tiered search and GPU persistent search are unsupported and report errors. The public API remains in the CAGRA headers. FlowANN-specific implementation headers stay internal.
Build and usage scope
CUVS_ENABLE_FLOWANN_SEARCH=ONCUVS_ENABLE_FLOWANN_BUILD=ONCUVS_FLOWANN_USE_GDRCOPY=ONgdrdrvdevice at runtime.OFFselects CUDA-copy.Search and graph-building support default to OFF. A build with FlowANN disabled does not require GDRCopy. The benchmark build option is introduced in PR3 rather than here.
For a device-padded dense dataset view, C++ usage follows the existing CAGRA flow:
C++ API documentation and the tiered storage guide accompany the implementation. C and Python examples are introduced with their respective binding PRs.
Testing and validation
Checks completed for this split
Local checks on October 21, 2026 used CUDA 13.1.115, GCC 12 and CMake 4.2.3, targeting SM90.
git diff --checkThe C++ tests cover grouping capacity, graph budgets, packed decoding, dense/VPQ ownership, source IDs, queue lifecycle, repeated search and serialization. Compilation of those test files is recorded separately from runtime execution. A grouping test now uses a reference structured binding to avoid
-Werror=range-loop-constructunder GCC 12.The queue cases were linked into a focused executable using the unmodified queue implementation and test source. Its local logger dependency used bundled fmt because GCC 12 lacks
<format>. That dependency setting is confined to validation and is not included in the repository changes.Historical API-integration measurements
The original PR reported the following comparison of direct FlowANN and unified CAGRA entry points. The values come from the source PR and were not measured again for the split.
The original comparison used the same search engine and hierarchical Wiki88M index and included query transfer and CPU reranking in QPS. It used different process and query counts for the two batches. The historical checks do not replace a regression test of the isolated provider refactoring or a new comparison on the split branches. See NVIDIA/cuvs#2675 for complete settings and Recall ranges.
Remaining before merge
Run the complete FlowANN build/search/serialization suite and the existing CAGRA regressions against the linked library. Verify installed headers, CMake exports and an external package consumer. Run a representative CAGRA performance comparison against the parent revision.
GDRCopy runtime tests remain because the current environment has no
/dev/gdrdrv. The original PR's reported 58/58 results and earlier memcheck runs are historical evidence only; they are not counted as checks completed for this split.Dependency and review scope
PR2 is split from NVIDIA/cuvs#2675 and depends on
zhr/flowann-mr1-provider. The branch iszhr/flowann-mr2-cpp.The next stages add benchmark tooling, the C API, and independent Python and Rust bindings. Reviewers can assess a complete C++ tiered index lifecycle in this PR without waiting for those interfaces.
