What

Adds the per-config persist lock for the ladder planner (PR 1a of 2; the handler switch is the stacked PR 1b).

  • PostgresStore.PlanAndSaveLadderRun(ctx, configID, asOf, build): in one READ COMMITTED transaction, under pg_advisory_xact_lock(hashtextextended('cudly:ladder-config:'+id, 0)), it reads the in-flight commitment, calls build(inFlight) (pure compute), then inserts the run, sweeps overdue tranches and inserts the new ones.
  • ClaimDueLadderTranches takes the same lock first. Without it, a claim with an asOf earlier than the planner's could fire a row the planner's netting read had already excluded as expired, and the row would be bought and re-planned.
  • Shared helper withLadderConfigLock: explicit READ COMMITTED (a REPEATABLE READ default would freeze the snapshot before the wait), empty config id rejected, lock_timeout (30s) applies to the advisory wait only and is reset afterwards, rollback on error/panic.
  • Lock order documented at LockPlanProvidersTx: ladder lock first; code holding an execution or tranche row must not take it. No cycle with LockPurchasePlanTx or the provider locks today.
  • Additive: the old interface methods stay until PR 1b.

Root cause context: the only entry today is the scheduled ladder_run task under a global task lock, so overlap needs that session lock to be lost (pinned connection dies) or a future per-config trigger. The lock is defense in depth and the base the executor needs. Not covered here and tracked as separate executor blockers: #842 (amend down-then-up over-buy), #843 (E read vs fired-to-completed race).

Verification (macOS, real Postgres 17, throwaway cluster, no Docker; Linux via CI)

  • Real-DB tests: claim waits for the planner, per-config independence, release on build error / panic / ctx cancel, empty id / nil run / asOf mismatch rejected, lock_timeout bounded to the wait, isolation is read committed under a REPEATABLE READ database default. Waiting is observed in pg_locks for this key, no sleeps.
  • Existing ladder lifecycle/grace/claim integration tests: 93 passed.
  • Unit tests and golangci-lint (incl. integration tag) clean.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Reliability
    • Ladder plans and due-tranche claims are now coordinated, helping prevent conflicting updates during planning and execution.
    • Ladder runs and their tranches are saved together, reducing the risk of partially applied updates.
    • Planning operations now handle invalid inputs, cancellation, and lock-wait timeouts with clear failures.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for concurrent planning and claims, independent configurations, and failure and timeout scenarios.

- PlanAndSaveLadderRun reads the config's in-flight commitment inside the
persist transaction, after taking pg_advisory_xact_lock on
  hashtextextended('cudly:ladder-config:'+id), so two overlapping runs
cannot both plan the same gap.
- One shared helper (READ COMMITTED, empty config id rejected, lock_timeout
applied to the advisory wait only) is used by the planner and by
ClaimDueLadderTranches, so a claim cannot fire a row the planner's
netting read had already excluded as expired.
- Lock order documented next to LockPlanProvidersTx: ladder lock first.
- Additive: the old interface methods stay until the handler switches.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds atomic ladder-run planning under a per-config PostgreSQL advisory lock. It also makes due-tranche claims use that lock and adds integration tests for lock behavior, transaction settings, and run validation.

Changes: Ladder planning and claim locking

Layer / File(s) Summary
Plan and persist ladder runs
internal/config/interfaces.go, internal/config/store_postgres_ladder_lock.go, internal/config/store_postgres_ladder.go, internal/mocks/stores.go, internal/analytics/collector_test.go, internal/server/test_helpers_test.go, internal/config/store_postgres_ladder_lock_integration_test.go
PlanAndSaveLadderRun reads in-flight commitment, calls the builder, validates the run, and saves the run and tranches in a READ COMMITTED transaction under a config-specific advisory lock. The shared insert helper writes the run, cancels overdue scheduled tranches, and inserts new tranches. Tests cover per-config lock independence, validation, cancellation, and cleanup after builder errors or panics.
Serialize due-tranche claims
internal/config/interfaces.go, internal/config/store_postgres_ladder_lifecycle.go, internal/config/store_postgres_ladder_lock_integration_test.go
ClaimDueLadderTranches now holds the config ladder lock through execution creation. The lock-order documentation and integration tests cover claim/planner serialization, lock timeout, and transaction isolation.

The new planning path has one small validation gap: it does not check that builder-produced tranches belong to the locked config and run. Adding the check is low-effort hardening that keeps the per-config locking guarantee intact. Otherwise the change is additive and reported as well tested.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Validate each tranche's ConfigID and RunID against the locked config and the run.

The code checks run.ConfigID against configID but does not check the tranches. insertLadderTranchesTx writes tr.ConfigID exactly as the builder sets it. A builder bug can therefore insert tranches for a different config while only this config's ladder lock is held. That other config's planner and claim paths are then not serialized against this write, which bypasses the netting guarantee this PR adds. Reject any tranche whose ConfigID is nil or differs from configID. Also reject any tranche whose non-nil RunID differs from the run ID.

Gate verdict (Opus independent adversarial review, money path): APPROVE at a9c9ebb78bdc5d505ab190e22f3030b335dfd5b4

Head note: I ran gh pr update-branch (merge, no rebase) because the branch was behind main (#844). git diff origin/main a9c9ebb7 is the same +460/-22 as the reviewed e64c030d; the PR's own changes are unchanged.

Review (checked against the code, not the PR body):

  • withLadderConfigLock (store_postgres_ladder_lock.go:43-67): empty id rejected; SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL READ COMMITTED runs as the tx's first statement (same effect as BeginTx ReadCommitted); SET LOCAL lock_timeout only around pg_advisory_xact_lock(hashtextextended('cudly:ladder-config:'||id,0)), then TO DEFAULT; deferred Rollback covers error/panic/ctx cancel (a failed rollback kills the conn, so the xact lock goes with it).
  • Key space: every pg_advisory* use grepped (config/store_postgres.go:195,1723,1747,3103; auth/store_postgres.go:448; migrations 065/074; server/handler.go session lock). Text prefixes are distinct inputs to the same hashtextextended bigint family; no collision beyond 2^-64.
  • In-flight SUM (inFlightLadderCommit, :141) runs on the tx after the lock; nothing reads it earlier. build is called between the SUM and the insert; run.ConfigID and StartedAt==asOf are checked so netting and the overdue sweep use one cutoff.
  • ClaimDueLadderTranches (lifecycle.go:113) takes the same lock first; SKIP LOCKED and RowsAffected logic untouched. No cycle: the reconciler/retry path (reconcile.go:76,105,130) and amend (amend.go:99-120) never take the ladder lock; plan-step locks only come after it.

Local evidence (macOS, throwaway PG17 cluster, git archive at the exact head, GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.9):

  • go build ./... + go vet -tags integration (config/server/mocks/analytics): ok
  • go test -tags integration ./internal/config/: ok (69s); 6 TestLadderLock_* PASS incl. panic/cancel/timeout/RR-default subtests
  • go test -tags integration ./internal/server/ -skip TestServerIntegration: ok (that one test needs Docker via internal/testutil; Linux CI covers it)
  • go test ./internal/... (unit): ok
  • git-secrets --register-aws over the 8 changed files: BSD grep rc=0, GNU grep 3.12 rc=0
  • CI: all jobs green at this SHA, mergeStateStatus CLEAN

Mutation run (one run, 10 mutants on changed lines, owner policy): killed M1 lock no-op (hang/fail), M2 no READ COMMITTED, M3 timeout not reset, M4 no lock_timeout (hang), M5 claim without lock (hang), M6 StartedAt check, M9 nil-run check. Survivors (non-blocking follow-ups): M7 config-id mismatch check has no test; M8 empty-id check is masked by the uuid column cast (defence in depth); M10 skipping the in-flight read is not caught at store level (#846's handler test covers netting under concurrency).

Non-blocking notes: the exported PostgresStore.SaveLadderRunWithTranches / GetInFlightLadderCommitUSDHr stay callable outside the lock (test-only today); in interfaces.go the old GetInFlight doc block now sits above PlanAndSaveLadderRun (removed by #846). #842 and #843 remain executor blockers.
