What

Rows that carry recommendations become notified after the email (#827). The Plans-page pause, run-now and delete (cancel) controls only accepted pending/paused, so a notified row lost them. This PR keeps them working:

  • pause: pending,notified -> paused (handler_purchases.go)
  • delete/cancel: pending,notified,paused -> canceled (cancelOrRecoverExecution)
  • run-now: pending,notified,paused -> approved (approvals.go)
  • plans.ts: notified rows get the run, pause and disable buttons (status type + badge class updated)
  • resume of a recommendation-bearing row whose scheduled_date has passed sets scheduled_date = now + plan.NotificationDaysBefore days, so a later re-notification cannot be followed by an immediate scheduler buy. The row is pending at that point, which the scheduler does not run while it carries recommendations. Re-emailing a resumed row past the plan date happens where the row is read, in the later wiring PR (B3); shouldNotifyPlan only sees the plan.

Nothing attaches yet

No code in this PR attaches recommendations to a plan step. The kill switch stays off by default and caps stay NULL (refused). The rec-bearing rows in the tests are hand-built fixtures.

Run-now on notified

Run-now on a notified row is human-initiated, so the commitment cap and the kill switch do not apply, exactly as for approve. It funnels through executeAndFinalize; tests show a notified row hits the armedRedrive guard and the stale Azure pricing refusal, with zero provider calls.

Evidence

  • go test ./internal/api ./internal/purchase ./internal/server: pass (mock-store fixtures, labelled)
  • Real PostgreSQL 17 (throwaway local cluster, temporary testhelper override reverted, never a real DB): TestNotifiedRow_PauseCancelStatusListsMatchInSQL passes with -tags integration
  • Mutation: reverting the run-now status list fails 4 purchase tests
  • frontend: full jest (3233 passed), eslint clean on touched files, make lint 0 issues; git-secrets (--register-aws) and a GNU grep scan clean

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Notified planned purchases can now be run, paused, resumed, or canceled from the available actions.
    • Resuming a purchase with recommendations and a past scheduled date moves it forward according to the plan’s notification window.
    • Canceling a notified purchase also releases its associated suppressions.

Gate follow-up (head d337dc7)

  • F1: resume now reschedules with a conditional single-column UPDATE (RescheduleAwaitingExecution, status pending/notified), not a full-row upsert; a cancel/approve landing in between is never overwritten (real-PG test replays cancel-in-between; the old full save fails it).
  • F2: cancel/delete of a notified row now releases its suppressions (idempotent, also on the already-canceled recovery path); real-PG test via the delete handler (fails without the fix).
  • The literal-status-list SQL test is replaced by handler-level real-PG tests; stale-pricing test asserts ErrStaleAzurePricing.
  • Known limit: with NotificationDaysBefore=0 a resumed row is moved to now (no veto window). Later wiring (B3) refuses attach when it is < 1, so rec-bearing rows cannot exist for such a plan.

…an rows

Once plan rows carry recommendations they become notified after the
email. The Plans page pause, run-now and delete (cancel) controls only
accepted pending/paused, so a notified row lost them. Accept notified in
the pause, cancel and run-now status lists and in plans.ts.

Resuming a recommendation-bearing row whose scheduled_date has passed now
moves the date to now + the plan's NotificationDaysBefore, so a later
re-notification cannot be followed by an immediate scheduler buy.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Notified executions are now accepted in pause, cancellation, and run-now flows. Resuming a past-dated execution with recommendations can update its scheduled date if it remains eligible. The frontend recognizes notified status and displays its corresponding actions.

Changes

Notified purchase lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pause and cancel notified executions
internal/api/handler_purchases.go, internal/api/handler_purchases_test.go, internal/api/handler_purchases_pause_claim_integration_test.go, internal/api/handler_test.go, internal/api/router_660_permission_flips_test.go, internal/api/handler_purchases_notified_test.go, internal/api/handler_purchases_notified_integration_test.go
Pause and cancellation transitions now accept notified executions. Cancellation removes execution suppressions after a successful transition and when recovering an already-canceled execution. Tests cover transition outcomes and suppression cleanup.
Resume and conditionally reschedule executions
internal/config/interfaces.go, internal/config/store_postgres.go, internal/mocks/stores.go, internal/api/handler_purchases.go, internal/api/handler_purchases_notified_test.go, internal/api/handler_purchases_notified_integration_test.go, internal/analytics/collector_test.go, internal/server/test_helpers_test.go
When a resumed execution has recommendations and a past scheduled date, the handler requests a new date based on the plan’s notification interval. The store updates the date only while the execution is pending or notified. Tests cover date conditions and a concurrent cancellation.
Run-now and scheduled execution
internal/purchase/approvals.go, internal/purchase/approvals_test.go, internal/purchase/notified_run_now_test.go
Run-now transitions now accept notified executions. Tests cover retry and stale-pricing guards and scheduler eligibility based on scheduled date.
Frontend notified purchase rows
frontend/src/api/types.ts, frontend/src/plans.ts, frontend/src/__tests__/plans.test.ts
The planned-purchase status type and row logic include notified status. The row uses pending styling and shows Run, Pause, and Disable actions, but not Resume.

Pause, cancel and run-now on notified rows now work, and resume no longer risks overwriting a concurrent cancel or run. One unit test still treats a notified row as ineligible and should be corrected, but this does not affect runtime behavior.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove notified from the ineligible pause case.

The case list at Line 2123 still includes notified. This mock returns a conflict for that case even though its source-status list accepts notified. The test therefore passes while asserting the opposite of the new pause contract. Remove notified from the rejection list; the new notified-row test covers success.

Make the reschedule update conditional on the current execution state.

resumePlannedPurchase first changes the execution from paused to pending. When the row has recommendations and an expired ScheduledDate, pushPastScheduledDate reads the plan and then saves the earlier row snapshot. If another request cancels or runs the execution before that save, SavePurchaseExecution can upsert status = 'pending' and undo the later transition. A plan-read or save error also returns an error after the resume transition has already persisted.

Use one conditional database operation, or an equivalent compare-and-set update, for the status transition and scheduled-date update. The operation must update the date only for the expected current state and must not overwrite a later cancel or run-now transition.

Gate review (Opus, money path): CHANGES REQUESTED

Reviewed head e3fab7b4986d8b813ab748eb8d2a594d15eb9292 (non-test code identical to 84931a82; e3fab7b only drops notified from TestPauseClaim_RejectsNonPendingStates, which I saw fail locally at 84931a8, so that fix is correct). Not merged.

Blocking findings (both reproduced on a throwaway local PostgreSQL 17, fixture rows)

F1. Resume reschedule is a lost update that can resurrect a canceled row. internal/api/handler_purchases.go:259 pushPastScheduledDate writes the row with SavePurchaseExecution, a full upsert (ON CONFLICT DO UPDATE SET status = $3, approval_token_hash = $7, ..., internal/config/store_postgres.go:1057), from the snapshot returned by the paused->pending CAS. A concurrent Plans-page delete, run-now/approve or notification rotation that lands between the CAS (l.232) and the save (after GetPurchasePlan, l.254) is overwritten. Repro: a store wrapper runs cancelOrRecoverExecution inside GetPurchasePlan, then the real resumePlannedPurchase finishes. Result: expected "canceled", actual "pending". The canceled rec-bearing row is pending again and can be re-notified and auto-bought after the window. Suggested fix: a conditional single-column update, e.g. UPDATE purchase_executions SET scheduled_date = $2, updated_at = NOW() WHERE execution_id = $1 AND status = 'pending' AND scheduled_date = $3 (or fold the date into the resume transition statement); a lost CAS is then a no-op.

F2. Plans-page delete of a notified row does not release its suppressions. internal/api/handler_purchases.go:489 cancelOrRecoverExecution now cancels notified rows with a bare TransitionExecutionStatus, while every other cancel path drops suppressions in the same tx: session cancel handler_purchases.go:1351-1360, email cancel internal/purchase/approvals.go:475-485, manager.go:316. Notified rows are exactly the rows that will carry suppressions once B3 attaches. Repro: notified rec-bearing row + BuildSuppressions/CreateSuppressionTx, then cancelOrRecoverExecution: row canceled, purchase_suppressions count 1 (expected 0). Suggested fix: run the transition and DeleteSuppressionsByExecutionTx in one WithTx, deleting only on a won CAS.

Verified OK

  • Run-now on notified (approvals.go:355): same funnel as approve (4-eyes, unpinned CAS to approved, executeAndFinalize); no cap/kill-switch recheck, same as approve. Reverting the status list fails TestRunNow_NotifiedRowReachesArmedRedriveGuard and ...StaleAzurePricingRefusal.
  • Paused is never claimed (scheduler query and claim lists are pending/notified/approved; email approve/cancel accept only pending/notified). A resumed rec-bearing row is pending, which executableByScheduler refuses (manager.go:767). Future-date and empty rows are unchanged. Reverting the pause list fails TestPausePlannedPurchase_AcceptsNotifiedRow; removing the push call fails TestResumePlannedPurchase_PastScheduledDate/rec-bearing_past_date_is_moved.
  • Frontend: plans.test.ts 150/150, eslint clean on touched files, tsc clean.
  • TestNotifiedTransition_OnlyAfterEmailSucceeds / TestClaimPin_RealAttachBetweenGateAndClaim: pass at main 0fbe113 and at head on a fresh DB per test. On one shared DB they fail at main too (first run: ClaimPin fails; rerun: NotifiedTransition fails). Pre-existing shared-DB data leakage, not caused by this PR.

Non-blocking follow-ups

  • NotificationDaysBefore = 0 makes the new date now, so a re-notified row has no veto window (S13 should guard this in B2/B3).
  • TestNotifiedRow_PauseCancelStatusListsMatchInSQL passes literal status lists to the store, not the handlers, so it cannot catch a handler regression.
  • TestRunNow_NotifiedRowReachesStaleAzurePricingRefusal asserts only require.Error; asserting the refusal text would pin it.

Local evidence (git archive at 84931a8, GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.9, under the suite lock)

go build ./... 0, go vet 0, go test ./internal/{api,purchase,server} 0, -tags integration ./internal/purchase 0, -tags integration ./internal/api 1 (only TestPauseClaim_RejectsNonPendingStates/notified, fixed by e3fab7b). Temporary testhelper override pointing at the local PG17 cluster, never committed.

…ons on cancel

Resume moved scheduled_date with a full-row upsert from the resume snapshot,
which could overwrite a cancel or approve that landed in between. Use a
conditional single-column update (status pending/notified); a lost race is a
no-op.

cancelOrRecoverExecution now cancels notified rows but did not release
their suppressions like the other cancel paths; delete them (idempotent, also
on the already-canceled recovery path).

Replace the literal-status-list SQL test with handler-level real-PG tests
(pause/resume, cancel-in-between replay, delete releases suppressions) and
assert the specific stale Azure pricing refusal.

Gate re-review (Opus, money path): APPROVED at d337dc724067479e4b758d556dea8cae901b1f5d

Diffed e3fab7b..d337dc7: 0affc2a (the fix) plus a merge of origin/main (#831, guarded saves; not part of this PR's diff).

  • F1 fixed. handler_purchases.go:258-262 now calls RescheduleAwaitingExecution, a single-column UPDATE ... SET scheduled_date WHERE execution_id=$1 AND status IN ('pending','notified') (store_postgres.go:1216-1226). A lost race is a no-op. My PG17 replay (cancel injected inside GetPurchasePlan, real resumePlannedPurchase) passes: the row stays canceled.
  • F2 fixed. cancelOrRecoverExecution (handler_purchases.go:497-499, and the canceled-only recovery path at :538) calls DeleteSuppressionsByExecution. It runs outside the CAS tx but is idempotent, and a retry heals it through the recovery path, which deletes only for rows already canceled. My PG17 check passes: 0 suppressions after delete.
  • Fails-before: reverting both fixes in a copy fails my two repro tests and the author's three new handler-level integration tests (5/5 FAIL); restoring them makes all 5 pass.
  • Non-blocking items: the stale Azure test now asserts ErrorIs(ErrStaleAzurePricing), and the literal-list SQL test was replaced by handler-level tests (both addressed). Still open, for S13 in B2/B3: NotificationDaysBefore=0 leaves the new date at now.

Local evidence

git archive at d337dc7, GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.9, under the suite lock, throwaway local PostgreSQL 17 via a temporary testhelper override that was never committed:

  • go build ./...: 0. go vet (api, purchase, config): 0.
  • Unit tests (api, purchase, server, config): 0.
  • -tags integration for ./internal/api and ./internal/purchase: 0.
  • internal/config integration could not run locally. Its helper (internal/testutil) needs Docker, which hangs here. Those tests come from main (feat(config): status-guarded execution saves and reaped-row recovery #831), and CI Integration Tests are green.
  • Earlier finding: the two paired integration tests fail only when they share one DB, and do so on main too (pre-existing).

CI: 28/28 SUCCESS. mergeStateStatus: CLEAN. Head is not behind main.
