Closes #829.

Every executor claims running by CAS before any provider call:

  • approve / direct execute / run-now: pending|notified|paused -> running in one step (no approved hop); scheduler: scheduled -> running; via one claimRunning primitive also used by claimAndExecute and the re-drive.
  • The approval audit stamp and the terminal save are SaveExecutionIfStatus(["running"]), so a stale copy cannot rewrite the status.
  • D1 recovery: a terminal save that finds the row reaped (failed) but with a purchased outcome goes through RecoverReapedExecution (executor's own audit note, then updatePlanProgress). A linked retry successor fails loud with a possible-double-buy flag; nothing purchased is never overwritten.
  • Reaper annotation is guarded on failed; losing it to a recovery is benign (counted Reaped, not Errored).
  • Test mock expectations moved from approved to running; the SaveExecutionIfStatusTx mock now falls back to SavePurchaseExecutionTx.

Verification (real PostgreSQL 17.11, local throwaway; counting fake provider, labeled fixture): both race orderings, a deterministic mid-approve replay (before the fix: 2 provider calls, after: 1), N-goroutine replay across approve/direct/cron/re-drive/scheduler (exactly one provider call), and the reaper interleaving (reaper CAS, executor recovery, reaper annotation: row stays completed, Reaped=1, Errored=0, ramp advanced). Unit tests assert on the guarded mock methods. The PR1 no_submission-clear assertion now seeds a row that actually carries the proof. go test ./internal/..., golangci-lint, git-secrets clean.

Not in scope: other non-executor post-CAS full-row saves (handler_purchases.go scheduled stamp, notifications.go, manager.go safeFail) stay as is; they make no provider call. The approve path does not re-check the step cap (unchanged behavior). No context.WithoutCancel for the 30s HTTP ctx (separate item).

Size: about 100 lines of code, the rest tests.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved purchase execution safeguards to prevent duplicate purchases when approvals, retries, scheduled runs, or recovery overlap.
    • Improved recovery after execution-status conflicts, helping preserve completed purchase records and flag retry-linked cases for review.
    • Prevented partial multi-account failures from advancing a ramp step; it advances only after all accounts succeed.
    • Avoided overwriting execution details when cleanup or recovery changes the execution status.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Purchase execution paths now claim executions directly as running. Approval, scheduler, and terminal saves use status guards. If a guarded terminal save loses its status check after a purchase, the code can recover the purchased outcome and record it.

Changes

Purchase execution safety

Layer / File(s) Summary
Claim executions as running
internal/purchase/claim.go, internal/purchase/approvals.go, internal/purchase/manager.go, internal/purchase/scheduled_fire.go, internal/purchase/*_test.go, internal/api/handler_purchases*_test.go
Approval, scheduled firing, and redrive now claim executions directly as running. Tests update expected claim targets and allowed source statuses.
Guard execution saves and recover purchased outcomes
internal/purchase/approvals.go, internal/purchase/manager.go, internal/purchase/reaper.go, internal/purchase/recover_reaped.go, internal/purchase/claim_guard_test.go, internal/config/store_postgres_execution_guarded_integration_test.go, internal/mocks/stores.go
Audit and terminal saves use status guards. A lost terminal-save guard can recover an execution with a purchased outcome. The reaper conditionally saves its error annotation only while the row remains failed.
Validate claim and recovery races
internal/purchase/single_claim_integration_test.go, internal/purchase/ramp_step_progress_integration_test.go
Integration tests cover competing claims, concurrent executors, reaper interleavings, and ramp-step progression during provider purchases.

The change narrows the double-purchase race in approval and scheduling. Two edge cases remain. A purchase may still start after the cleanup process has already marked the row failed. A row where nothing was actually bought could be recorded as purchased and advance the rollout. Resolve or explicitly accept both before merging.

… saves

Closes #829. Every executor now wins an atomic CAS to running before the
provider is called: approve/direct/run-now go straight from
pending/notified/paused to running (no approved hop) and the scheduler
from scheduled to running, through one claimRunning primitive shared with
claimAndExecute and the re-drive. A lost CAS surfaces
ErrExecutionNotInExpectedStatus, so a second executor never reaches the
provider.

The approval audit stamp and the terminal save are guarded on running
(SaveExecutionIfStatus). When the guard fails because the reaper already
failed a row whose purchase succeeded, the executor recovers it to
completed/partially_completed with its own audit note and advances the
ramp; a linked retry successor fails loud with a possible-double-buy
flag. The reaper's annotation is guarded on failed and losing it is
benign.

Gate verdict: CHANGES REQUESTED (not merged)

Reviewed SHA: 775b114472ca7575f907aec947ce4fe583a5634f (base origin/main f2b7121, not behind). Independent gate review (Opus, money path). Local runs from git archive of the exact SHA, GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.9, throwaway local PostgreSQL 17.11 (temporary test-helper override in the archive only, never committed), under the suite lock.

Blocking findings

B1. D1 recovery never fires for a multi-account (fan-out) root row; regression vs main. internal/purchase/recover_reaped.go:41-42 gates recovery on anyRecPurchased(exec.Recommendations), but a fan-out root never gets Purchased=true on its own recs: account_scope.go:31,46 and execution.go:274 copy the recs into per-account rows, and only those are marked. So a root whose accounts all bought, reaped mid-run, is left failed with the reaper text "...; safe to retry", the ramp is not advanced, and the caller gets plain ErrAuditLoss (no double-buy flag). The plan (A4) names multi-account runs as the realistic case for this race.
Reproduced with a throwaway PG17 probe (author's reapingStore interleaving; root row with no cloud_account_id, 3 repaired accounts, approve path):

  • this PR: approveErr=audit loss ... is "failed", expected one of [running] purchases=3 rootStatus=failed rootErr="reaped after 10m in running state — executor did not complete; safe to retry" stepBefore=2 stepAfter=2
  • main f2b7121, same probe: approveErr=<nil> purchases=3 rootStatus=completed stepBefore=2 stepAfter=3
Suggested fix: derive "something was bought" from the outcome classification too. finalizeExecution only yields completed/partially_completed from a nil execErr or a partial sentinel (partialPurchaseError / multiAccountPartialError), so the predicate could accept those, or mark the root recs from the per-account results. Add a PG test for the fan-out root.

B2. CI Integration Tests fail at this SHA, and the failure hides the PR's own tests. internal/purchase/azure_pricing_integration_test.go:63 still expects the claim to go to "approved". The mock panics, which aborts the whole internal/purchase integration binary, so none of the new TestSingleClaim_* tests run in CI. Reproduced locally (same panic) and in CI run 38323041327. Changing "approved" to "running" on that line makes the package pass locally (ok internal/purchase 12.2s).

Verified OK

  • Every provider-call path claims running by CAS before executeAndFinalize: approve/token/SQS-approve/session/direct/run-now (approvals.go:396), scheduler (scheduled_fire.go:81), SQS+cron claimAndExecute (manager.go:193, pinned), re-drive (manager.go:553). executePurchase has no other caller. 4-eyes runs before the claim; audit stamps are written after it via SaveExecutionIfStatus(["running"]). A lost CAS still maps to 409 (handler_purchases.go:338).
  • Fails-before: on main with the author's tests, TestSingleClaim_ExecutorArrivingMidApproveCannotBuyAgain gives 2 provider calls (expected 1) and ...ReaperInterleavingRecoversPurchasedRow fails. Both pass at head. The BothOrderings/Concurrent tests also pass on main, so they don't discriminate (non-blocking).
  • Reaper benign loss counts as Reaped, not Errored (reaper.go:229-237). The single-account recovery, retry-linked and nothing-purchased branches all behave as designed.
  • feat(purchase): keep pause, run-now and cancel working on notified plan rows #830 paths (pause/cancel/run-now statuses, guarded reschedule) are untouched by this diff.
  • Unit tests go test ./internal/...: exit 0. PG17 integration at head: internal/config ok; internal/purchase panics (B2) and passes with only the one-line B2 fix applied.
  • git-secrets on the 19 changed files: rc=0 with BSD grep 2.6.0 and with GNU grep 3.12 (a canary was detected, so the scanner was live).
  • Mutation run (12 mutants on changed lines, one run): 9 killed. Survivors (non-blocking follow-ups): the approve stamp save unguarded (approvals.go:416), the scheduler stamp save unguarded (scheduled_fire.go:94), and the Tx terminal save unguarded (manager.go:316).

Non-blocking

  • approvals.go:416 / scheduled_fire.go:94: if the guarded stamp returns ErrExecutionNotInExpectedStatus, the claim has been lost, but the code still goes on to the provider call. Nothing can move a just-claimed row off running today, so this is unreachable. Returning before the provider call would make the "lost claim never buys" invariant local.
  • Closes #829 is right for the executor scope. The remaining non-executor post-CAS saves (plan T3) should get a follow-up issue.

cristim and others added 3 commits October 13, 2026 01:56
… tests

A multi-account root row never has Purchased set on its own recs (only
the per-account copies do), so the late-success recovery after a reap
never fired for it. Detect a purchased outcome from the finalized status
instead: completed or partially_completed only come from a nil error or a
partial sentinel. Adds a real PostgreSQL test of three accounts buying
while the reaper fails the root.

Tightens the approve and scheduler stamp tests and the transactional
terminal-save test so dropping the running guard from any of them fails.

Stop execution when the audit save reports lost ownership. Both paths claim running but continue to the provider after SaveExecutionIfStatus reports a status conflict. If the reaper has failed the row, a provider purchase can start after that failure. Treat ErrExecutionNotInExpectedStatus as a lost claim; retain best-effort handling for other audit-write errors. Require evidence of a purchase before recovering a reaped row.

A row can contain recommendations with none selected. Purchase processing then returns without a provider call, but finalization can set completed. If the reaper wins before the terminal save, this predicate recovers that row as purchased and permits ramp advancement even though nothing was bought. Carry an actual committed-purchase result through execution, including the per-account results for fan-out. Do not use recommendation count as purchase proof. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Gate re-review: APPROVED at 808b726b15736c991d3741fabdcedd23910f28c1

Reviewed: 775b114..1834195 in full (code: recover_reaped.go:41-47 purchasedOutcome now = completed|partially_completed with recs; that matches finalizeExecution, manager.go:137-161, which only produces those statuses from a nil error or a partial sentinel). 1834195..981f172 is test-only (expectClaim helper drops the constant target, verified by diff). 981f172 was BEHIND main; I ran gh pr update-branch (merge) -> 808b726. The PR's own diff is identical before and after (git patch-id 607c3bd7 for f2b7121..981f172 and 324c0bc..808b726).

Evidence at 808b726 (git archive, GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.9, throwaway local PostgreSQL 17.11, suite lock):

  • B1 fixed: my 3-account reaped replay (fan-out root, approve path) now gives approveErr=<nil> purchases=3 rootStatus=completed rootErr="recovered after reap; provider purchase succeeded" stepBefore=2 stepAfter=3 reaped=1 errored=0, the same outcome as main. The author's interleaving test now covers the multi-account root, and reverting purchasedOutcome to anyRecPurchased fails it (mutant killed).
  • B2 fixed: go test -tags integration ./internal/purchase/ ./internal/config/ ok (purchase 23.0s, config 67.9s), all TestSingleClaim_* pass. CI Integration Tests (run 38325351234) now runs and passes them.
  • Previously surviving mutants are now killed: approve stamp unguarded (TestApprove_ClaimsRunningAndStampsGuarded), Tx terminal save unguarded (TestClaimPin_PostClaimCapRecheckFailsBeforeSubmission), scheduler stamp unguarded (TestFireScheduledDelayedPurchases_EndToEnd).
  • go test ./internal/... exit 0; git-secrets on the 22 changed files rc=0 with BSD grep 2.6.0 and GNU grep 3.12.
  • CI: 25/25 checks pass at 808b726, mergeStateStatus CLEAN.

Remaining non-blocking: guarded stamp failure still proceeds to the provider call (unreachable today); the plan T3 non-executor saves need a follow-up issue. Closes #829 is correct for this scope.
