Summary

PR1 of the #792 plan: the platform side of zonal EC2 recs (AZ kept since #805).

  • Purchase detail guard (computeDetailMismatch) refuses a re-matched rec whose AZ differs from or is unknown against a known origin AZ.
  • recIdentityKey has the AZ as ninth component, so pricing resolves the requested zone's row.
  • Submit idempotency key includes the AZ, read from the rec Details (rows written before this PR carry it only there). Keys that cannot be derived skip that candidate with an error log.
  • New RecommendationRecord.AvailabilityZone, stamped by the scheduler; rec ID appends |<az> only for zonal recs (regional IDs unchanged). Request recs echo the field from the listed rec (the frontend spreads the rec object, so no frontend change is needed for this PR).
  • AZ names are per account: zonal EC2 recs computed for a member account other than the collecting one are dropped with a warning (own and empty-account recs are kept; collection is not marked incomplete).

Not in this PR (plan: platform-792-az): DB natural key (PR2a generated column + index, PR2b ON CONFLICT, PR2c drop old index), frontend variant identity (PR3), suppression key AZ (#631 follow-up), tenancy/platform key (#806). Writes behave as on main until PR2b.

Refs #792

Evidence (unit/mock, no live calls)

  • New tests in internal/api/purchase_az_test.go and internal/scheduler/zonal_recs_test.go use the persisted zonal Details shape. Mutation check: removing the guard term, the identity-key AZ or the idempotency-key AZ each fails the matching tests.
  • go test ./internal/api ./internal/scheduler ./internal/config pass; pre-commit hooks pass.

Closes nothing (partial).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Zonal EC2 recommendations now retain their availability zone and are distinguished from otherwise identical recommendations in different zones.
    • Purchase matching and pricing now account for availability zones, helping ensure purchases align with the requested zone.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Zonal recommendations associated with a different AWS account are excluded when the collecting account is known. Regional recommendations and recommendations without a known collecting account remain unaffected.
    • Purchase requests with malformed recommendation details now fail safely, while invalid candidates are skipped during duplicate checks.

…mpotency key and rec ID

Zonal EC2 recs now keep their availability zone (#805) but three purchase
paths ignored it:
- computeDetailMismatch refuses a re-matched rec whose AZ differs from, or
is unknown against, a known origin AZ.
- recIdentityKey adds the AZ so the stored-rec index and pricing resolve
the requested zone instead of an arbitrary one.
- the 2-minute submit idempotency key reads the AZ from the rec Details
(also present on rows written before this change), so two submits that
differ only by AZ no longer collapse into one execution. A candidate whose
key cannot be derived is skipped with an error log.

The scheduler stamps the new RecommendationRecord.AvailabilityZone and
appends it to the rec ID only for zonal recs (regional IDs unchanged). AZ
names are per account, so zonal EC2 recs that Cost Explorer computed for a
member account other than the collecting one are dropped with a warning.

Walkthrough

The change carries EC2 availability zones through recommendation collection and purchase matching. Scheduler collection filters foreign-account zonal recommendations when the collecting account is known. Recommendation IDs, pricing identity, configuration checks, and purchase idempotency keys now account for the zone.

Changes

Zonal EC2 recommendation handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Filter zonal recommendations by account
internal/scheduler/scheduler.go, internal/scheduler/zonal_recs.go, internal/scheduler/*_test.go
AWS collection passes an expected account ID to fetchAndConvert. It filters foreign-account zonal EC2 recommendations from primary and fallback results. Tests cover ambient, self-account, assumed-role, and unknown-account collection.
Preserve AZ in recommendation records
internal/config/types.go, internal/scheduler/scheduler.go, internal/scheduler/zonal_recs_test.go
RecommendationRecord stores the availability zone. Zonal recommendation IDs append the zone, while regional IDs retain their previous format.
Match purchase recommendations by AZ
internal/api/purchase_pricing.go, internal/api/purchase_az_test.go
Recommendation identity and compute configuration checks include the availability zone. Store-pricing tests cover selecting the requested zone and rejecting missing or conflicting zone values. Recommendation descriptions include a non-empty zone.
Include AZ in purchase idempotency
internal/api/handler_purchases.go, internal/api/handler_purchases_guards_test.go, internal/api/handler_purchases_submit_dedupe_integration_test.go, internal/api/purchase_az_test.go
Idempotency keys include the decoded availability zone. Key-generation errors stop new submissions; duplicate checks log and skip candidates whose keys cannot be derived.

This change gives each zonal EC2 recommendation a distinct ID, but storage still treats recommendations that differ only by availability zone as the same row. Some zonal recommendations may therefore be lost, or a recommendation refresh may fail. A brief failure looking up the host account may also let another account's zonal recommendations appear under the host account. These issues should be resolved before merge unless explicitly accepted.

Gate verdict: CHANGES REQUESTED (no merge) at b64725a

Independent adversarial gate review of the full diff (base 6dc774b, which is current main). The core key and guard changes are correct. One blocking coverage gap remains.

Blocking

  1. The payer/member-account zonal drop is not tested at the collection path. dropForeignZonalEC2 is covered as a unit, but every mutation of its wiring survives the full internal/api + internal/scheduler suites:

    • delete recs = dropForeignZonalEC2(recs, expectedAccount) (internal/scheduler/scheduler.go:1046): SURVIVED
    • pass fallbackRecs... without the drop (scheduler.go:1065): SURVIVED
    • collectAWSForAccount passes "" instead of acct.ExternalID (scheduler.go:790/801): SURVIVED
    • ambient path passes "" instead of s.hostAWSAccountID(ctx) (scheduler.go:651): SURVIVED

This drop is the only thing that stops a member account's zonal rec from being bought in a different physical AZ with the collecting account's credentials, so a refactor that loses the call would go unnoticed. Fix: add a fetchAndConvert-level test with a fake recommendations client returning one own-account zonal rec, one member-account zonal rec and one member-account regional rec. Assert that the member zonal rec is gone from the primary and from the lookback-fallback result. Add one test proving collectAWSForAccount passes acct.ExternalID and one proving the ambient path passes the STS host account. Each test must fail under the matching mutation above.

Non-blocking

  1. internal/api/purchase_az_test.go:15-18 says "Real zonal EC2 Details shape", but uses "scope":"availability-zone". The real parser writes ec2types.ScopeAvailabilityZone = "Availability Zone" (cloud-commitments-go providers/aws/recommendations/parser_services.go:120). The scope value is not on the AZ logic path, so this does not invalidate the tests. Please use the real value or drop the word "Real".

Verified (evidence, local macOS, git archive of the head, go1.26.9, GOWORK=off)

  • go build ./..., go vet and go test -count=1 on ./internal/api ./internal/scheduler ./internal/config: all ok (api 24.2s, scheduler 5.2s, config 0.5s).
  • Fails-before, via mutation; the new tests cannot compile against the base because the field does not exist there. Each of these mutations is KILLED by the named tests: guard AZ term (2 tests), recIdentityKey AZ component (4 tests), idempotency-key AZ, the key read from the top-level field instead of Details (legacy-shape test fails), decode error swallowed, a dedupe decode error that stops the scan instead of skipping, the scheduler field stamp, the |az suffix never appended, the |az suffix always appended (regional IDs change, TestRecommendationIdentity_Tagging fails), zonalAvailabilityZone returning "", and all four dropForeignZonalEC2 conditions (empty account kept, own account kept, regional kept, empty expected account disables). Total 14 killed and 4 survived; the survivors are the finding above.
  • Provider ClientToken independence: DeriveIdempotencyToken(idempotencyLineageKey(exec), i) (internal/purchase/execution.go:651, 758) anchors on the IdempotencyKey column, which is minted as a uuid at insert (internal/config/store_postgres.go:1016-1017). The api purchaseIdempotencyKey sha256 is used only for the 2-minute submit dedupe and is never persisted, so the format change does not affect provider tokens.
  • Legacy key equality: the key reads the AZ from Details, so a pending row without the top-level field hashes the same as the new shape (TestPurchaseIdempotencyKey_LegacyRecWithoutTopLevelAZMatchesNewShape). The key is computed after priceAndEnforcePurchaseConstraints, so the recs are stored copies.
  • Regional behaviour: the rec ID is unchanged for non-zonal recs, and the recIdentityKey/idempotency format change is symmetric because both sides are recomputed by the same function.
  • loadStoredRecommendationIndex with the 9-component key against the 8-column DB: the DB still holds at most one row per 8-tuple, so the 9-key is unique and the duplicate refusal cannot newly trigger. A zonal request whose AZ differs from the stored row gets the existing 409 "not in current recommendation set". The frontend spreads the listed rec (frontend/src/app.ts:446), so it echoes availability_zone.
  • Account match: acct.ExternalID is the AWS account ID (credentials/host_identity.go:47 compares it to the STS Account). No real AWS calls were made.
  • CI green at this SHA (Unit, Integration, E2E, Lint, Security, pre-commit). mergeStateStatus CLEAN. Labels mirror fix(purchase): AZ-scoped EC2 recs: the purchase guard, idempotency key and recommendations natural key ignore the AZ #792.
  • Local -tags integration (TestPersistExecution_*): not obtained. testcontainers hangs in Docker host detection on this machine (the Docker daemon itself responds), which is an environment problem unrelated to the PR. CI Integration Tests passed at this SHA.

Re-gate after the wiring tests land (new SHA restarts the gate).

Addressed gate findings at 8dbeaed (merged main, no rebase). Added fetchAndConvert-level tests for the primary and lookback paths (own zonal kept, member zonal dropped, member regional kept, empty account kept, empty expected account disables the check, collection stays complete), plus collectAWSAmbient (STS host account), collectAWSForAccount self-account and assumed-role (ExternalID) tests, and a partition test that asserts the dropped count (the log line itself is not captured: the shared logger cannot be redirected). Mutants now killed by the new tests: delete primary drop (scheduler.go:1046), fallback without drop (:1065), self-account and assumed-role ExternalID replaced by empty (:790/:801), ambient STS account replaced by empty (:651). Also fixed purchase_az_test.go scope to the real value 'Availability Zone'.

Resolve the ambient account once for filtering and tagging.

If this STS lookup fails, fetchAndConvert keeps foreign zonal recommendations because expectedAccount is empty. If the later lookup in collectAWSRecommendations succeeds, the scheduler tags those unfiltered recommendations with the host account’s UUID. A transient STS failure can therefore make a member-account zonal recommendation appear purchasable for the host account. Reuse one resolved host identity for both operations so the filter and account tag cannot disagree.

Include AvailabilityZone in the recommendation storage key.

CollectRecommendations writes through UpsertRecommendations, whose ON CONFLICT key excludes AvailabilityZone. The zone is stored only inside payload. Two zonal EC2 records with the same remaining key can therefore overwrite each other, or cause the multi-row upsert to fail. ReplaceRecommendations also cannot insert both rows because the unique index rejects the duplicate key.

Add a denormalized availability-zone column and include it in the unique index and both write paths before relying on the new IDs.

Gate review (Opus 5.5, independent): CHANGES REQUESTED at 8dbeaed

Blocker (CI red, introduced in 6074f12): Lint Code fails:
internal/scheduler/zonal_recs.go:35:1: unnamedResult: consider giving a name to these results (gocritic).
partitionForeignZonalEC2 returns ([]common.Recommendation, int). Suggested fix: name the results (kept []common.Recommendation, dropped int) and change kept := recs[:0:0] / dropped := 0 to plain assignment (or drop the dropped := 0 line). Behaviour-neutral; no other change needed.

Security Scanning also failed, but on an external { error: 'Service Unavailable' } (gosec SARIF step), not this PR; the next push re-runs it.

Delta since the previous gate at b64725a (verified by diff): 6074f12c = tests + scope string "Availability Zone" in purchase_az_test.go + one production change in zonal_recs.go: the drop logic moved into partitionForeignZonalEC2 returning (kept, dropped); dropForeignZonalEC2 now only logs. Reviewed: behaviour identical (same predicate, same empty-expected early return, same log). 8dbeaed3 is a clean merge of main 988e545 (PR files identical to 6074f12; frontend files identical to main).

Previous blocker (dropForeignZonalEC2 untested): resolved. Mutation sweep at 8dbeaed, scheduler package (go test -p 2 ./internal/scheduler/), 19 mutants, 18 killed:

  • the 4 disconnect mutants from the last gate: ambient hostAWSAccountID -> "" (651) KILLED; self-account ExternalID -> "" (790) KILLED; assumed-role ExternalID -> "" (801) KILLED; primary drop removed (1046, as append(recs[:0:0], recs...)) KILLED; lookback drop removed (1065) KILLED
  • account != -> == KILLED; empty r.Account no longer kept KILLED; zonal condition inverted / removed KILLED; empty-expected early return removed KILLED; early return nil KILLED; dropped++ removed KILLED
  • wrong plumbing: acct.ID (internal UUID) instead of ExternalID at 790 and 801 KILLED; acct.Name at 790/801 KILLED; ambient resolveAmbientHostAccountID (UUID) instead of the STS account KILLED
  • SURVIVED (non-blocking): if dropped > 0 -> dropped < 0 (warn log only).

Payer scenario, fixture evidence (not a real account): a CE GetReservationPurchaseRecommendation response in wire shape (AccountScope LINKED; member 222222222222 zonal m5.large us-east-1a, member regional m5.xlarge, payer 111111111111 zonal c5.large us-east-1b) parsed through cloud-commitments-go recommendations.NewClientWithAPI -> GetRecommendations (rec.Account and AZ come from the real parser), then dropForeignZonalEC2(recs, "111111111111"): member zonal dropped, member regional and payer zonal kept; empty expected account keeps all 3. PASS. No AWS calls. Real-account verification gap: not run against a live Organizations payer.

Local (macOS, GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.9, from git archive 8dbeaed3): go build ./... OK; go vet ./internal/api/ ./internal/scheduler/ ./internal/config/ OK; go test api / scheduler / config all ok.

Not merging. After the lint fix, the gate restarts at the new head (I only need to confirm the delta is the rename plus fresh green CI).

Opus gate verdict (round 3): APPROVE at f4b05f4

Reviewer: independent Opus 5.5 (claude-opus-5-5) gate agent, did not author this PR. Builds on rounds at b64725a (comment 6127712441) and 8dbeaed (comment 6127952497); their evidence (fails-before, ClientToken independence, legacy key equality, regional unchanged, 9-part key vs 8-column DB, 19 mutants with 18 killed, payer fixture via the real parser, scope) is not redone.

Delta 8dbeaed..f4b05f4: one commit, one file, internal/scheduler/zonal_recs.go (+2/-3). Only change: partitionForeignZonalEC2 now has named results (kept []common.Recommendation, dropped int), and the dropped := 0 local is removed. The named dropped starts at zero, so behaviour is identical. The only non-test caller is dropForeignZonalEC2 (same file, unchanged). This clears the round-2 blocker (gocritic unnamedResult). The commit has no merge; origin/main 988e545 is already an ancestor of the head.

CI at f4b05f4: 25/25 pass, 0 failed. This includes Lint Code, gosec, Security Scanning (the earlier outage failure is now green), Unit/Integration/E2E Tests, pre-commit, Snyk, Trivy, Terraform validate x3 and CI Success. mergeStateStatus CLEAN. Labels match #792: effort/m, impact/many, priority/p2, severity/medium, triaged, type/bug, urgency/this-sprint.

Local verification (macOS arm64, git archive of f4b05f4, go1.26.9, GOWORK=off, GOMAXPROCS=2, under the cc-heavy-run lock):

  • go build ./... OK
  • go vet ./internal/... OK
  • go test -p 2 ./internal/api ./internal/scheduler ./internal/config: all three ok, exit 0. These are unit tests with fixtures and mocks; the real-scenario evidence is from the earlier rounds.

Non-blocking follow-up (carried over): the surviving mutant on the warn-log condition in dropForeignZonalEC2.

Merging with --squash --match-head-commit f4b05f447d94814c5625f6fbbe9360ad77223306. No migration in this PR.
