Branches and releases

As of 2026-08-29, this repo uses a single active branch: main. It's the GitHub default and the only branch you should ever need to build, branch from, or file PRs against.

The old multi-branch model (develop as the long-running nominal default, modernize-build as where active work actually happened, stable, master, make) has been consolidated: main is exactly modernize-build's former tip, pushed under the new name and made the default. The old branches weren't deleted, just renamed to archive/develop, archive/modernize-build, archive/stable, archive/master, archive/make — full history is still there if anything needs digging up, but there's no reason to branch from or compare against them going forward.

Releases

Releases are marked with tags (e.g. v8.0.0-alpha.1), not a separate release branch — see the Releases page for what's actually shippable right now, and the README's "What's new" section for what changed in the current one.

Old branch nomenclature (historical, no longer used)

For context if you're reading old commit messages or PRs: the pre-consolidation stable branch was named after minerals in alphabetical order, and develop was named after colours in alphabetical order. Neither convention applies to main.
