fix(dbt-tools): move to dbt-integration 0.3.15 so the dbt adapter starts under Bun - #1368
Moves packages/dbt-tools from @altimateai/dbt-integration 0.2.14 to ^0.3.15. 0.2.x starts its Python child through python-bridge, whose bluebird.promisifyAll(child_process) throws under Bun (this.#stdin), so the dbt-first path of sql_execute never ran. 0.3.x vendors the bridge over a plain fd-3 pipe; from 0.3.15, inside a single-file executable it runs its script from a temporary directory that it removes on exit. python-bridge and bluebird leave the lockfile.
adapter.ts: 0.3.x's adapter takes a UnitTestParser and a SemanticModelParser; the Fusion integration no longer takes the cloud-variant detector. dbt Cloud keeps it and also gets the dependencies of the dbt Core command engine that every variant but fusion-stable runs on.
copy-python.ts / release.yml / publish.ts: the bridge finds node_python_bridge.py from the bundle's own location (fileURLToPath(import.meta.url)), so the __dirname patch is gone. The build and release smoke check fail if those references go or a build-time path appears.
Tests: build-adversarial.test.ts tested the removed patch; its other checks move to build-integrity.test.ts, plus a test that runs the package in the publish.ts layout from another directory.
Stays on ^0.3.15: 0.3.16 is inside the 3-day minimumReleaseAge window until 11-01 02:50Z. It brings Fusion and corecommand fixes that dbt-tools will pick up in a follow-up bump.
Claims
C1: Under Bun, the dbt-first path of sql_execute starts the dbt adapter and runs the query through dbt, from source and from the compiled binary.
C2: The compiled binary runs the bridge from a real directory, not /$bunfs. No Python process and no temporary bridge directory is left after the call.
C3:altimate-dbt, laid out as publish.ts ships it and run by Node from another directory, starts the node_python_bridge.py next to its own bundle. The build and the release smoke check fail if a build-time path is baked into the bundle.
C4:adapter.ts builds the adapter with what 0.3.x's constructors take: both new parsers, the cloud-variant detector for dbt Cloud only, and dbt Cloud's Core command engine dependencies.
Residuals
R1: When the adapter can't start (no dbt in the venv, a broken project), sql_execute still falls back to the configured warehouse without saying why, as on main.
How did you verify your code works?
sql_execute through the tool registry (debug agent build --tool sql_execute, no model turn) in a dbt-core 1.11.7 / DuckDB project with no warehouse configured, select count(*) as n from customer_totals, on 9631118:
before
this branch
compiled binary
v0.12.8: falls back, "No warehouse configured"
n = 2 via dbt
from source (Bun)
main: falls back, same
n = 2 via dbt
The binary ran the bridge from /tmp/altimate-dbt-integration-<random>/; no Python process or temp directory was left.
altimate-dbt in the publish.ts layout under Node 22: [{"n": 2}].
Fresh checkout, bun install --frozen-lockfile (9631118): opencode's dbt-tools, publish and dbt-first tests pass (76). On 5018286: both typechecks clean, dbt-tools 184 pass, 0 fail. A Bun test runs the CLI per mode (fails on 0.2.14). The relocation test fails when a fixed path is baked in. dbt Cloud on a non-Fusion variant failed every command ("engine not initialized") before 9631118; a test now has it start the bridge.
Cost side effects
None. sql_execute still sends one query per call; in a dbt project it now runs through dbt's adapter instead of falling back to the configured warehouse.
Checklist
I have tested my changes locally
I have not included unrelated changes in this PR
I checked for cost side effects (model calls, queries or cloud resources that grow with user data) and described them, or wrote "none"
Appendix: complexity delta
✅ No touched function changed in complexity (3 touched, 0 new, all under 10). Advisory, not a gate.
Added support for parsing dbt unit tests and semantic models.
Bug Fixes
Improved the CLI’s ability to locate its Python bridge when launched from a different directory.
Strengthened package checks to catch missing bridge files and unintended references to local build environments.
Verified that installed bundles can start correctly and that repeated builds produce consistent output. These checks cover dbt Cloud and Core Command Engine configurations.
…rts under Bun
`dbt-tools` resolved `@altimateai/dbt-integration` 0.2.14, which spawns
its Python child through `python-bridge`. Under Bun that module fails
to load (`bluebird.promisifyAll(child_process)` throws on
`ChildProcess.prototype.stdin`), and past that, Bun's IPC to a non-JS
child closes after the first message. So the dbt-first path of
`sql_execute` never ran; the adapter silently fell back.
0.3.x vendors the bridge and talks newline JSON over a plain fd-3 pipe,
with no `python-bridge` or `bluebird` in the tree.
- `adapter.ts`: the 0.3.x constructors take `UnitTestParser` and
`SemanticModelParser`; the Fusion integration no longer takes the
cloud-variant detector (the Cloud integration still does).
- `copy-python.ts`: the vendored bridge resolves its script from the
bundle's own location at runtime, so the `python-bridge` `__dirname`
patch is gone; the build now fails if a build-time path is baked in.
`build-adversarial.test.ts` tested only that patch and is removed;
`build-integrity.test.ts` and the release smoke check assert the new
invariant.

It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The dependency range changes to ^0.3.15. The adapter registers UnitTestParser and SemanticModelParser, passes additional options to the cloud integration, and no longer passes cloudVariantDetector to the Fusion command integration.
The packaging script validates runtime path and bridge references instead of patching the bundle. The release workflow checks for the runtime path expression. Publish comments describe runtime lookup and bridge placement.
No actionable merge-blocking risk was identified in the integration or packaging changes.

Explanation
Issue #1367 is open and directly linked. package.json now uses @altimateai/dbt-integration^0.3.15. adapter.ts supplies the new parsers, keeps DbtCloudVariantDetector for dbt Cloud, and supplies the Core command engine dependencies. The reported source and compiled-binary checks show that warehouse-less sql_execute runs through dbt under Bun. build-integrity.test.ts verifies the shipped bridge, runtime path construction, absence of baked paths, and published-layout startup from another directory. These changes satisfy the issue requirements.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within Issue #1367. The dependency and adapter changes address Bun startup and 0.3.x constructor requirements. The build, release, publish, and integrity-test changes validate bridge resolution for source, compiled, and published layouts. The removed adversarial test is replaced by focused integrity coverage. No unrelated change is demonstrated.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template and is substantive. It has an issue link (Closes #1367), a type of change (Bug fix), and a detailed 'What does this PR do?' section that explains the root cause (0.2.x python-bridge/bluebird failure under Bun), the dependency upgrade, the adapter and build changes, and the test changes. It states claims C1–C4 and residual R1 and gives concrete verification evidence (before/after table, binary and source runs, the publish.ts layout run under Node 22, typecheck and test counts). The Cost side effects section is filled in ('None', with a reason), and the checklist is completed. Minor gaps: the 'Screenshots / recordings' section is not addressed, which is acceptable because the change is not a UI change. The description also includes a 'Claude Code' attribution and a session link, and a large appendix. The template warns that clearly AI-generated descriptions may be ignored, but the content is specific, technical, and includes reproducible verification, so the template requirements are met. The verification statements mention commit hashes, but the test count differs between the description (184 pass on 5018286) and the objectives (180 passing tests). This is a discrepancy worth noting, not a missing section.

Round on ccc92cc, the whole PR. Please review it against the numbered claims (C1–C4) and residuals (R1–R2) in the description. Report only a concrete trace that violates a numbered claim: a runtime (Bun from source, the compiled binary, or altimate-dbt under Node in the publish.ts layout), a dbt integration type and a project state where this branch fails a claim. Instances of R1 and R2 are not findings. A round with no claim violation ends review.

Incremental review at 5018286fac (previous review: c0f6a99958). This commit resolves both earlier suggestions: the dead #stdin/private field branch is gone from diagnose(), and the Bun test now redirects HOME (it runs the CLI from source under Bun, so the developer's ~/.dbt/dbt_cloud.yml can no longer pick the variant) with the stand-in's argv log shell-escaped. One new suggestion: the rewritten test duplicates startPublished's CLI harness. The earlier stdout finding is still open on the unchanged dependency pin.

Carried forward, still open at HEAD (dbt-tools stays on ^0.3.15): dbt-integration 0.3.15's createPythonBridge spawns Python with inherited stdout/stderr, so dbt log lines and NodeParser debug output land on the CLI stdout — over the TUI and inside the run --format json JSON stream — on the first sql_execute in a dbt project. Incremental review at c0f6a99958 (previous review: 963111866f). This commit adds the Bun-runtime adapter test (adapter-bun.test.ts, shared stand-in-python.ts), makes the published-layout tests assert the CLI exit code/output, removes the isPyBridgeIncompat skip, and tightens the release smoke check — those address the two earlier test/CI-gap notes. Two suggestions remain on the new code, and the earlier stdout finding is still open on the unchanged dependency pin.

Incremental review at 963111866f (previous review: ada3263edf). The two changed files add the dbt Core command-engine dependencies to the dbt Cloud integration and cover it with a test:
packages/dbt-tools/src/adapter.ts:146-147 — the cloud integration now receives { pythonDBTCommandExecutionStrategy, dbtConfiguration, dbtIntegrationClient }, the same extras the core and core-command integrations already take beyond the shared cloud arguments (infra, runtime, provider, cli, term). The additional argument is passed positionally to all dbt Cloud variants, which is safe because fusion-stable variants do not use the Core engine, and the shared python/client instance reuse matches the existing core/command wiring. The fusion constructor reformat at :177 is whitespace-only.
packages/dbt-tools/test/build-integrity.test.ts:71-115 — the published-layout setup is extracted into startPublished, and the new test at :119-130 runs the packaged CLI with dbtIntegration: "cloud" (an unknown, i.e. non-fusion-stable variant) and asserts the bridge script was spawned. This exercises the new dependency wiring through create()/adapter.initialize(); if the deps were dropped, create() returns the diagnosed "engine not initialized" error before the bridge script is ever in argv, so the assertion fails. The existing core-command relocation test still runs via the same helper and keeps its existsSync check, and the macOS realpathSync handling from the earlier review is preserved.
No logic, control flow or assertions in the shipped path changed beyond the added constructor argument, and no cost side effects were introduced (sql_execute remains one query per call; the new test spawns a local stub python only). No duplicate of existing threads: the copy-python.ts:32 wording thread is addressed and the file is unchanged here.

Gaps: read-only review; bun install --frozen-lockfile, typecheck and the test suite were not run here, and the installed @altimateai/dbt-integration@0.3.15 sources were not present locally, so the constructor parameter order was verified against the call shape and the PR's typecheck/test evidence rather than the package's .d.ts.
Incremental review at ada3263edf (previous review: 89932fa949). The three changed files contain only comment, error-message and log-string rewording to match what the copy/build guards actually verify:
script/copy-python.ts:23-37 — the comment now states the guard checks for the presence of the references the runtime path is built from plus the baked-path pattern, and points at the relocation test for the actual path; the success log no longer claims a runtime resolution was verified.
.github/workflows/release.yml:289-292 — the release smoke-check comment and error message describe the fileURLToPath(import.meta.url) presence check instead of asserting runtime resolution.
test/build-integrity.test.ts:37 — test title renamed to match the same presence-only assertion; the assertion itself is unchanged.
No logic, control flow or assertions changed. The baked regex, the two includes checks and the grep-based CI check are identical to the previously reviewed revision, and the real path resolution remains covered by the published-layout relocation test (build-integrity.test.ts:71-124), which compares against realpathSync(installed) and asserts the bridge was spawned from dist/. Comment text and code now agree, so the earlier overclaiming wording is resolved. The cubic review thread on copy-python.ts:32 is answered and its finding addressed.

Incremental review at 89932fa949 (previous review: 97f6c2c4fd). The only change since the previous review is the merge of origin/main into the branch. None of the PR's authored files (adapter.ts, copy-python.ts, build-integrity.test.ts, package.json, release.yml, publish.ts) changed; bun.lock was re-resolved during the merge and stays consistent: @altimateai/dbt-integration@0.3.15 is still pinned for packages/dbt-tools, its nested @altimateai/altimate-core@0.5.0 and platform optional deps are present, and python-bridge / bluebird / patch-package remain fully removed. The @altimateai/altimate-core 0.9.0 and @smithy/* 4.2.2 bump in the same lockfile comes from main, not this PR.

bun.lock (merge-resolved; no issues)
Gaps: cannot run bun install --frozen-lockfile or the test suite in this read-only review, so lockfile install consistency and adapter.ts's positional constructor arguments against 0.3.15 were verified by inspection only (CI covers them).

Node loads the published bundle by its real path. On macOS `tmpdir()` is

Require successful dbt execution in the dbt-first test.
Registry.reset() removes the native fallback. If adapter construction or initialization fails, ensureDbtAdapter() returns null, and the handler returns an error. The test only logs that error, so a constructor regression can pass without executing through dbt.

Pass coreEngineDependencies to the cloud integration when the variant is not fusion-stable.
With dbtIntegration set to "cloud", a project whose detected variant is not fusion-stable reaches createEngine(). That method throws when coreEngineDependencies is missing. The head's cloud call omits this optional twelfth argument, so cloud initialization can fail. The python, config, and client values are already in scope in create() and are used the same way by the core factory.

In 0.3.x every dbt Cloud variant but fusion-stable runs on a dbt Core command engine,
which needs the Python strategy, configuration and client; without them every command failed.

On CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding (adapter.ts:134-146, review on ada3263): valid, fixed in 9631118.
In 0.3.x, DBTCloudProjectIntegration.createEngine throws for every variant except fusion-stable when coreEngineDependencies is missing, and an unknown variant (no ~/.dbt/dbt_cloud.yml) takes that path too. Before the fix, altimate-dbt info in dbt Cloud mode exited 1 with "DBTCloudProjectIntegration: engine not initialized". The Cloud factory now passes python, config and client, as the Core factory does. A new test in build-integrity.test.ts starts the packaged CLI in dbt Cloud mode and checks that the engine starts the bridge. It fails without the fix, and dbt-tools passes 181, 0 fail. C4 in the description now names these dependencies.
9631118 passes dbt Cloud's dbt Core command engine dependencies in packages/dbt-tools/src/adapter.ts (the cloud factory) and adds a test for it.
Try to falsify C4: report a constructor call in adapter.ts whose arguments don't match what @altimateai/dbt-integration 0.3.15 takes, in position or type, or a dbtIntegration mode (core, corecommand, cloud on each variant, fusion) whose engine can't be built from what create() passes. Instances of R1 are not findings. A round with no claim violation ends review.

What was verified at 9631118 (macOS arm64, Bun 1.3.14, Node 26, dbt-core 1.11.16 + dbt-duckdb):
C1: sql.execute from source under Bun returned n = 2 via dbt in core and corecommand modes. From a build:local compiled binary, debug agent build --tool sql_execute also returned n = 2 via dbt.
C2: the binary ran the bridge from $TMPDIR/altimate-dbt-integration-XXXX/bridge.py. After exit the temp dir was gone and the Python process exited within about a second.
C3: the publish.ts layout, run by Node from another directory, returned [{"n": 2}] from execute.
C4: every constructor matches 0.3.15's typings. The exported DBTCoreCommandProjectIntegration inherits Core's 12-param constructor; the cloudDeps variant is the separate CloudCoreCommandIntegration. Nothing is dropped or misplaced.
Fallback: with Python missing, or Python without dbt, sql.execute falls back to "No warehouse configured" within 0–5 s and leaves no processes behind.
Lockfile: only the dbt-integration subtree changed (python-bridge, bluebird and patch-package removed; nested altimate-core 0.1.6→0.5.0; the rest is hoisting). 0.3.15 is older than 3 days and has no install scripts.
dbt-tools typecheck is clean, and bun run test gives 89 pass / 0 fail.

Major: with the adapter now running, dbt's log output goes to the process's stdout: over the TUI and into run --format json.
0.3.15's createPythonBridge spawns Python with the default stdio: ["pipe", process.stdout, process.stderr, "pipe"]. 0.2.x had the same default, but under Bun it never got that far. On a compiled binary, the stdout of debug agent build --tool sql_execute begins with dbt's Registered adapter: duckdb=… and Unable to do partial parsing… lines. Then come two NodeParser Error reading dbt_loom.config.yml … ENOENT dumps with source frames, from the library's console.debug, which fires for every project without a dbt_loom config. Nothing went to stderr.
TUI: the server runs in a Bun Worker. worker-console-guard.ts overrides process.stdout.write and console.*, but a child that inherits fd 1 bypasses that. Repro: a Worker that no-ops process.stdout.write and spawns sh -c "echo X" with stdio: ["pipe", process.stdout, …] still prints X. So the first sql_execute in a dbt project draws dbt log lines over the TUI.
Headless:run --format json writes JSON lines to stdout (run.ts:735), and these lines get mixed in.
DBT_QUIET=true does not suppress them, and 0.3.16 creates the bridge the same way. Suggested fix: give the bridge piped stdout/stderr and route them to the DBTTerminal or log buffer. That needs an option in dbt-integration. Also add an output-hygiene check on the dbt-first path.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed. The fix belongs in @altimateai/dbt-integration, and it's in review there for 0.3.17 (moved up from 0.3.18):
The bridge's child gets piped stdout and stderr, read line by line into the host's DBTTerminal at debug level. It's the default rather than an option, so every host gets it. dbt-tools' terminal drops debug, so here those lines go nowhere.
The dbt_loom read logs nothing when there's no config (those were the NodeParser Error reading dbt_loom.config.yml dumps), and the remaining console.log calls go through the terminal too.
Checked under Bun 1.3.14 with dbt-tools' adapter on jaffle (create(), then immediatelyExecuteSQL): stdout goes from 63 lines to 0 in core mode and from 136 to 0 in corecommand, and the query still returns its rows.
This PR moves to that release once it's out and past the 3-day minimumReleaseAge; we're not adding a minimumReleaseAgeExcludes entry for it. The bump will add the output-hygiene check you asked for on the dbt-first path.

Minor, non-blocking (test-only; can be a follow-up): no CI test starts the adapter under Bun.
These published-package tests run the bundle under node, and nothing else in CI imports adapter.ts and starts a bridge under Bun, the runtime that failed. packages/opencode/test/altimate/dbt-first-execution.test.ts:182-212 still catches the #stdin/private-field error and returns early, and its other tests return when there is no adapter. So a dependency change that brings the Bun incompatibility back would skip silently. Suggest a Bun-runtime case (a direct create() call, or startPublished run with bun and the same stand-in python) that asserts the bridge script was spawned, and dropping the isPyBridgeIncompat skip.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Done in c0f6a99. test/adapter-bun.test.ts, which is in the CI bun run test list, calls create() under Bun in core, corecommand and cloud modes. It uses the same stand-in python, which now lives in test/stand-in-python.ts, and asserts that the bridge script was spawned. The Core modes reject with the bridge's report of the stand-in's exit, and Cloud resolves.
Against dbt-integration 0.2.14 it fails with Cannot access invalid private field (evaluating 'this.#stdin').
With the Cloud engine dependencies removed from adapter.ts, the cloud case fails with "engine not initialized".
The isPyBridgeIncompat skip and its comment are gone from dbt-first-execution.test.ts. That case passes under Bun against a real dbt-duckdb project.

Follow-up in 5018286: the test now runs the CLI from source as a Bun subprocess instead of calling create() in the test process. This is the "startPublished run with bun" form you suggested.
The reason: the in-process call picked up this machine's ~/.dbt/dbt_cloud.yml in cloud mode. Bun's os.homedir() ignores a runtime HOME change, so the subprocess gets a temp HOME from the start.
Each mode pins the CLI's exit code and output and asserts the bridge script was spawned. The mutation checks give the same results as before:
0.2.14 fails in all three modes;
without the Cloud engine dependencies, it fails with "engine not initialized".
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Minor, non-blocking (the preceding bun run build step already fails on this): the release smoke check is weaker than copy-python.ts.
Mutation on the built bundle: replacing x.join(_, "node_python_bridge.py") with a literal /home/runner/work/…/node_python_bridge.py still passes all three release greps. fileURLToPath(import.meta.url) is still present, and there is no var __dirname = "/…". copy-python.ts (its "node_python_bridge.py" include) and build-integrity (its checkout-path check) both catch it. To make this step stand on its own, also grep for "node_python_bridge.py" and for $GITHUB_WORKSPACE in dist/index.js.
Nits and notes from the review above. None of these block.
packages/dbt-tools/src/index.ts:40-45: diagnose() still says "Bun runtime incompatibility with python-bridge". The comments at :112 ("bluebird throws outside normal promise chains") and :145 ("avoid loading python-bridge") are stale too. packages/opencode/test/altimate/dbt-first-execution.test.ts:182-188 has the same stale bluebird explanation.
build-integrity.test.ts: the two test.skipIf(process.platform === "win32") cases could say why (the stand-in python is a #!/bin/sh script).
build-integrity.test.ts: the dbt Cloud case could also assert the CLI's non-zero exit. Then a regression that fails before the spawn says so, instead of showing up as an empty runs array.
Library-owned: the temp bridge directory is removed only on process.once("exit"). A SIGKILL, or a signal with no handler, leaves $TMPDIR/altimate-dbt-integration-* behind. Worth raising in dbt-integration together with the stdout option.
…lease check
A Bun test starts the adapter in each mode with a stand-in python; it fails on 0.2.14.
The dbt-first test stops skipping the old python-bridge error, the release smoke check
greps for the bridge name and the checkout path, and stale comments are updated.

index.ts: the diagnose() message no longer names python-bridge. The two comments now say what the handlers and the lazy import are for. The stale bluebird comment in dbt-first-execution.test.ts was removed along with the skip.
build-integrity.test.ts: both cases now use one posixOnly, with the reason: the stand-in is a #!/bin/sh script.
CLI exit: the Cloud case exits 0, not non-zero. After its engine's bridge fails, info still answers from the project.
So it pins exitCode: 0 and compares { exitCode, output }. A failure before the spawn then shows the CLI's message: with the Cloud engine dependencies removed, it shows exit 1 and "engine not initialized".
The corecommand case pins exit 1 and the bridge's "exit code 3" message.
Temp bridge directory: agreed. It belongs in dbt-integration, together with the stdout change.

SUGGESTION: Dead branch after the dependency bump — remove it.
#stdin/#stdout/"private field" messages only came from python-bridge's bluebird.promisifyAll(child_process), and this PR removes python-bridge (no other producer in the tree). Nothing can reach this branch now: the generic return { error: msg, ... } fallback at the end of diagnose() already reports the raw message, so the reworded text still describes a failure the CLI can no longer produce.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Agreed, and removed in 5018286. 0.3.15 vendors the bridge without bluebird, so nothing produces those messages any more. Any other error still reaches the generic fallback with its raw message. Against 0.2.14, the Bun test now fails through that fallback.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
SUGGESTION: Neutralise HOME here too.
startPublished in build-integrity.test.ts points HOME at the temp dir specifically so that no ~/.dbt/dbt_cloud.yml exists (see its comment at line 83). This test calls create() against the real home, so the cloud case's variant detection and credentials come from the developer's machine: with a dbt Cloud config present the variant can resolve differently (e.g. fusion-stable, which never spawns the bridge), so the case passes in CI (no ~/.dbt) and can fail locally. Set HOME to a temp dir for the duration, as the published-package test does.

Confirmed and fixed in 5018286. With this machine's ~/.dbt/dbt_cloud.yml, the cloud case timed out at 5 s.
Pointing HOME at the temp dir inside the test process wasn't enough:
Bun's os.homedir() doesn't follow a runtime change to HOME.
The detector reads the home directory once, in its constructor, through import * as os, so a spy can't reach it either.
So the test now runs the CLI from source as a Bun subprocess (process.execPath src/index.ts info), with HOME set to the temp dir from the start, as the published-package test does. Results:
It passes with both the real home and a temp home.
It fails on 0.2.14 in all three modes.
With the Cloud engine dependencies removed, it fails with "engine not initialized".
The in-process case read this machine's ~/.dbt/dbt_cloud.yml: Bun's os.homedir() ignores a
runtime HOME change. The stand-in quotes an apostrophe in its log path, and diagnose() loses
the python-bridge branch nothing can reach now.

SUGGESTION: This duplicates the CLI harness in build-integrity.test.ts.
startPublished() (build-integrity.test.ts:70-100) already does this exact sequence: write a temp <home>/.altimate-code/dbt.json, start the stand-in python, run the CLI with HOME redirected, then compare captured exitCode/stdout and assert the spawned script. The only differences here are the runtime (process.execPath vs node) and the entry point (src/index.ts vs the installed dist/index.js). Extracting one helper next to standInPython (e.g. runDbtCli(root, { command, entry })) and calling it from both files would remove ~20 duplicated lines and stop the two layouts from drifting apart when the config shape or assertions change.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Holding this one for the dependency bump that will follow this PR. That bump changes both harnesses:
They need a stand-in dbt that answers --version, because the next dbt-integration checks for the dbt Cloud CLI before it creates a Cloud engine.
They also get the output-hygiene check from the review.
Extracting a shared runDbtCli helper then, next to standInPython, means the two layouts change once. For now, the shared part is the stand-in, which already lives in one place.

packages/dbt-toolsfrom@altimateai/dbt-integration0.2.14 to^0.3.15. 0.2.x starts its Python child throughpython-bridge, whosebluebird.promisifyAll(child_process)throws under Bun (this.#stdin), so the dbt-first path ofsql_executenever ran. 0.3.x vendors the bridge over a plain fd-3 pipe; from 0.3.15, inside a single-file executable it runs its script from a temporary directory that it removes on exit.python-bridgeandbluebirdleave the lockfile.adapter.ts: 0.3.x's adapter takes aUnitTestParserand aSemanticModelParser; the Fusion integration no longer takes the cloud-variant detector. dbt Cloud keeps it and also gets the dependencies of the dbt Core command engine that every variant but fusion-stable runs on.copy-python.ts/release.yml/publish.ts: the bridge findsnode_python_bridge.pyfrom the bundle's own location (fileURLToPath(import.meta.url)), so the__dirnamepatch is gone. The build and release smoke check fail if those references go or a build-time path appears.build-adversarial.test.tstested the removed patch; its other checks move tobuild-integrity.test.ts, plus a test that runs the package in thepublish.tslayout from another directory.Stays on
^0.3.15: 0.3.16 is inside the 3-dayminimumReleaseAgewindow until 11-01 02:50Z. It brings Fusion and corecommand fixes that dbt-tools will pick up in a follow-up bump.Claims
sql_executestarts the dbt adapter and runs the query through dbt, from source and from the compiled binary./$bunfs. No Python process and no temporary bridge directory is left after the call.altimate-dbt, laid out aspublish.tsships it and run by Node from another directory, starts thenode_python_bridge.pynext to its own bundle. The build and the release smoke check fail if a build-time path is baked into the bundle.adapter.tsbuilds the adapter with what 0.3.x's constructors take: both new parsers, the cloud-variant detector for dbt Cloud only, and dbt Cloud's Core command engine dependencies.Residuals
sql_executestill falls back to the configured warehouse without saying why, as onmain. How did you verify your code works?

On 5018286: both typechecks clean, dbt-tools 184 pass, 0 fail. A Bun test runs the CLI per mode (fails on 0.2.14). The relocation test fails when a fixed path is baked in. dbt Cloud on a non-Fusion variant failed every command ("engine not initialized") before 9631118; a test now has it start the bridge.Cost side effects
None.
sql_executestill sends one query per call; in a dbt project it now runs through dbt's adapter instead of falling back to the configured warehouse.Checklist
