🐛 Fix web serializer message, JVM open fallback, drop unused exception - #700
It was public but never thrown, and its message pointed to isSaveFileWithoutBytesSupported(), which does not exist. No references in code, docs or samples.
Before: Desktop.getDesktop()?.open(file) with no support check, so headless setups or Linux desktops without GNOME libraries failed with HeadlessException / UnsupportedOperationException.
Now:
Uses java.awt.Desktop.open when Desktop.isDesktopSupported() and isSupported(Action.OPEN) are true.
Otherwise, on Linux, runs xdg-open <absolute path> through ProcessBuilder: no shell, the path is a separate argument, output is discarded. It waits at most 500 ms for an error, which is enough to catch fast failures (missing file, missing tool) without stalling a click handler. If xdg-open is still running after that, the call returns and counts as a success, since some fallbacks keep running until the viewer closes.
Throws FileKitDialogException (an existing type, subclass of FileKitException) when Desktop cannot open files and xdg-open is missing, cannot start, or exits with a non-zero code. Errors thrown by Desktop.open itself (for example IOException when no app is associated) are still not wrapped.
Matches the Kotlin/Native Linux implementation, which also uses xdg-open and throws a FileKitException when it cannot start. The decision logic sits behind a small internal seam (JvmDefaultApplicationOpener) so it can be tested without a real desktop.
Breaking change (for the next release's Migration Notes)
Removedio.github.vinceglb.filekit.dialogs.FileKitFileSaverWithoutBytesException (web). It was never thrown, so the only impact is on code that references the class by name: delete those references.
JVM openFileWithDefaultApplication can now throw FileKitDialogException when the desktop cannot open files, where it used to throw HeadlessException or UnsupportedOperationException. On Linux it now tries xdg-open before failing.
Affected platforms
JVM (open with default app), JS and Wasm (serializer message, removed exception). No change on Android, iOS, macOS, Linux native or Windows native.
Docs
docs/dialogs/open-file.mdx: updated the JVM row and the intro sentence of "Platform notes".
docs/platform-support.mdx: no change needed. The serialization footnote and the "Open with default app" row are still accurate.
Validation
Run locally:
./gradlew :filekit-dialogs:jvmTest --tests '*JvmDefaultApplicationOpenerTest*' --max-workers=1: 7 tests passed (Desktop path, Desktop errors not wrapped, xdg-open command, still running after the timeout, non-zero exit, missing binary, unsupported outside Linux).
./gradlew :filekit-core:compileKotlinWasmJs --max-workers=1: OK.
ktlint on the changed Kotlin files: clean.
Left to CI: the full multiplatform build and test matrix.
Manual check (not done locally, needs a Linux desktop): on a Linux JVM app where Desktop.isSupported(Action.OPEN) is false (for example KDE without GNOME libraries), openFileWithDefaultApplication should open the file through xdg-open. With xdg-open removed from PATH, it should throw FileKitDialogException.
- Rename the web PlatformFileSerializer actual to PlatformFileSerializer.web.kt and say it is
unsupported on web targets (JS and Wasm), with KDoc on the expect and web declarations.
- Remove FileKitFileSaverWithoutBytesException: it was public but never thrown, and its message
pointed to a function that does not exist.
- JVM openFileWithDefaultApplication now checks Desktop support, falls back to xdg-open on Linux
with a bounded wait, and throws FileKitDialogException when neither works.

The PR adds JVM file-opening fallback behavior on Linux, documents platform file serialization, and removes a web-specific file-saver exception class.

The JVM entry point delegates to JvmDefaultApplicationOpener. The opener uses Desktop when supported and otherwise runs xdg-open on Linux. Tests cover command arguments, timeout handling, and failure cases. The documentation describes the behavior and exception handling.
The common KDoc describes path-string serialization, access-right limitations, and bookmark use. The web message and comment identify JS and Wasm as unsupported targets.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 59e00
Unsupported JVM platforms may fail to open files through an unintended Linux-specific fallback; the correction is small and localized.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 59e00
The fallback uses a fixed command and a separate absolute-path argument, limiting injection risk. No exploitable security regression was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns executable lookup in the host environment and compatibility for external users of the removed exception.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new exposure is local process execution from the calling JVM in environments where Desktop opening previously failed. The selected executable and downstream handler operate within host-defined authority; deployment credentials, accessible assets, and handler privileges were not established by the supplied evidence.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A substituted xdg-open could execute with the JVM’s process authority if an attacker controls executable lookup. That prerequisite was not established, so this remains an environment trust assumption rather than an observed vulnerability introduced by the PR.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The fallback does not invoke a shell or concatenate a command string. The fixed executable and separate absolute-path argument counter shell injection and prevent a filename beginning with an option marker or URI scheme from being passed in that form. Desktop remains preferred, and its opening errors are not retried through a different handler.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Each fallback call owns a local process reference, with no shared reservation, deduplication, retry, or rollback mechanism. Repetition can launch additional handlers, and interruption does not cancel an already-started handler. This is consistent with a fire-and-forget opening operation, not a transactional or cancellation-safe operation.

Avoid blocking the caller while waiting for xdg-open
When Desktop is unsupported on Linux and xdg-open stays alive while the viewer is open, this blocks the caller for the full three-second timeout even when opening succeeds. Because this API is synchronous and documented for direct click-handler use, that can freeze the UI; avoid waiting on the caller thread for this fallback.
Restrict the xdg-open fallback to recognized Linux systems.
PlatformUtil.current returns Platform.Linux for every unrecognized os.name. When Desktop opening is unavailable, the default opener therefore starts xdg-open on unsupported JVM platforms. This can fail with FileKitDialogException when xdg-open is unavailable, and it invokes the Linux fallback even when the platform is not Linux.
