Description

Adds a beginner-friendly Aleph Alpha LLM tracing example to the sample app.

Changes

  • Added a simple Aleph Alpha completion example.
  • Added Aleph Alpha client and instrumentation dependencies.
  • Added setup and usage documentation.
  • Documented OpenTelemetry tracing and content-capture configuration.

Testing

  • Ran Ruff checks on the new example.
  • Ran git diff --cached --check.
  • Live Aleph Alpha API execution was not performed because an API key was not available.

Checklist

  • I have added tests that cover my changes.
  • If adding a new instrumentation or changing an existing one, I've added screenshots from some observability platform showing the change.
  • PR name follows conventional commits format: feat(sample-app): ...
  • (If applicable) I have updated the documentation accordingly.

Closes #4069

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a sample that sends an Aleph Alpha completion request with OpenTelemetry tracing enabled and displays the result.
  • Documentation
    • Added setup instructions, prerequisites, and an overview of the Aleph Alpha tracing sample.

Complete the Aleph Alpha example instructions.

The README stops after uv sync. Add the required environment variable, run command, trace-export setup, and content-capture setting.

ALEPH_ALPHA_API_KEY is required because the example reads that exact variable. AlephAlphaInstrumentor().instrument() does not configure a span exporter, so document a ConsoleSpanExporter or another exporter. The Aleph Alpha instrumentation captures prompt and completion content by default, and TRACELOOP_TRACE_CONTENT=false disables it.

Suggested README additions
 ```bash
 uv sync
+```
+
+### Run
+
+Set the API key and run the example:
+
+```bash
+export ALEPH_ALPHA_API_KEY="your-aleph-alpha-api-key"
+uv run python sample_app/alephalpha.py
+```
+
+### View traces
+
+`AlephAlphaInstrumentor().instrument()` does not configure a span exporter. To view spans locally, initialize `Traceloop` with `ConsoleSpanExporter` before instrumenting, or configure another OpenTelemetry exporter.
+
+By default, this instrumentation records prompt and completion content in span attributes. Set `TRACELOOP_TRACE_CONTENT=false` to disable content capture.
Configure a local exporter before instrumenting Aleph Alpha.
The sample has no provider or exporter setup. Its direct local run can therefore create non-recording completion spans. Traceloop.init(app_name="alephalpha_sample") alone does not fix this: without TRACELOOP_API_KEY, the SDK returns before provider initialization. Pass a console exporter and disable batching for immediate local output.
