Pull Request Description

What

  • Make list-overrides --details label a variant pre-built when it inherits a package-level pypi-prebuilt source, while preserving variant-level overrides and legacy pre_built behavior.
  • Add a CLI regression for a package-level prebuilt source with a variant that only sets env.

Why

Closes #1421. The command previously reported yes (build from source) for that variant despite the effective resolver downloading prebuilt wheels.

Verification

  • RED, before fix: uvx --from hatch hatch run test:test tests/test_list_overrides.py::test_list_overrides_variant_inherits_package_source -q --cov-report=term:skip-covered --tb=short → 1 failed ('yes' != 'pre-built').
  • GREEN: uvx --from hatch hatch run test:test tests/test_list_overrides.py --no-cov -q → 11 passed.
  • Related: uvx --from hatch hatch run test:test tests/test_packagesettings.py tests/test_cli.py --no-cov -q --tb=short → 126 passed.
  • uvx --from hatch hatch run mypy:mypy -p fromager → passed, 77 source files (after a follow-up commit renamed the resolver variable to avoid a mypy type collision; the first CI pre-commit run failed on this, the next run is pending).
  • uvx --from ruff ruff check src/fromager/commands/list_overrides.py tests/test_list_overrides.py and uvx --from ruff ruff format --check src/fromager/commands/list_overrides.py tests/test_list_overrides.py → passed; git diff --check → passed.
  • The repository's guidance recommends file-scoped tests for small changes; the full suite and e2e were not run. The existing Click deprecation warnings remain in the scoped test runs.

Walkthrough

list-overrides now determines variant pre-built status from the variant source, or from the package source when the variant has none. It uses the legacy pre_built value only when neither source exists. A CLI test checks the package-source fallback.

The display fix has targeted regression coverage, but the reused variable breaks the required type check. Rename the variant-source variable before merging.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(list-overrides): inherit package source for variant labels" names the command and the specific behavior changed: variant labels now inherit the package-level pypi-prebuilt source. This matches the raw summary (variant source falls back to package source for pre-built status) and the objectives (labeling a variant pre-built when it inherits a package-level source). It is specific and concise.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1421 is the only direct linked issue, and it is open. Its coding requirements are: (1) for list-overrides --details, use the variant source: when present, otherwise the package-level source:, and read resolves_prebuilt_wheel from that source; (2) fall back to pre_built only when neither level has a source:; (3) add a test for a variant that inherits a package-level source.

At the reviewed head, src/fromager/commands/list_overrides.py sets source = v_info.source if v_info.source is not None else ps.source. It then uses source.resolves_prebuilt_wheel when source is not None, and v_info.pre_built otherwise. This matches requirements (1) and (2). resolves_prebuilt_wheel is defined on AbstractResolver in src/fromager/packagesettings/_resolver.py, and PyPIPrebuiltResolver sets it to True. The package-level source therefore exposes the same attribute.

tests/test_list_overrides.py::test_list_overrides_variant_inherits_package_source writes a package settings file with a package-level pypi-prebuilt source and a cpu variant that sets only env. It runs list-overrides --details --format json and asserts cpu == "pre-built". This matches requirement (3). The change is display-only, as the issue requires. The PR description and the PR objectives state that #1421 is closed by this change. Non-blocking #1414 has no coding requirement here. No other directly linked issue applies.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diff against the merge base changes two files. src/fromager/commands/list_overrides.py replaces the variant-only prebuilt check with a check that uses the variant source, then the package source, then the legacy pre_built flag. This is the behavior that #1421 requests. tests/test_list_overrides.py adds one regression test for the same behavior. The test is a direct support change for the objective. No unrelated refactoring, documentation, or extra behavior change appears in the diff. The source variable reuse in the function does not change the existing package-level source column, which still uses ps.source.provider. The PR description states the verification steps. It does not add unrelated code.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is specific and on-topic. It states that list-overrides --details now labels a variant pre-built when it inherits a package-level pypi-prebuilt source, while keeping variant-level overrides and legacy pre_built behavior. It names the regression test added for a variant that only sets env, references issue #1421, and lists the test runs and results. This matches the changeset described in the raw summary.

Avoid reusing the source label variable with a resolver object; mypy can now type-check the package source field.
