feat(web): use spare space for the initial right panel width - #29322
Opening Changes or Browser in a thread without a saved panel width starts at 540 px, even on a large monitor with ample unused space beside the messages. Users must repeat the same resize in each new thread to read wider diffs or use the browser comfortably.
Change
Use the spare workspace width as the initial right panel width, reserving the configured message width, canvas padding, and inline thread details card with its existing clearances. Keep the card's slot even while it is closed so reopening it still fits inline. If the canvas is too short to display the card, reserve only the configured message width and both chat margins; growing the window restores the card's slot.
The existing resize observer and drag limits apply. Saved per-thread widths still take precedence. When there is insufficient spare space, the default remains 540 px, subject to the existing bounds. Full-width chat, sheets, maximized panels, and canvases with a visible floating browser/device preview retain their existing sizing behavior. No controls, settings, persistence changes, or extra observers are added.
This gives large-monitor users more readable diffs and browser pages immediately, while keeping their message line length and floating details card. The shared web/Electron right panel covers both surfaces; React Native and server/provider behavior are unaffected.
Scope and approval
This proposes one intentional default-sizing change. Related discussion: #16825. I found no explicit maintainer approval of this direction and scope, so this PR does not claim to satisfy the prior-approval requirement in CONTRIBUTING.md or an obvious-bug exception. Maintainer agreement is still needed.
Verification

The details card remains visible on the large layout. Browser uses the same 1196 px default. Also checked wide chat (1152 px messages, 780 px panel), full-width chat (540 px panel), card close/reopen, and a manual resize to 996 px that survives reload. Automatic sizing does not write a saved width.
With a synthetic browser snapshot and a 480 px floating player in the isolated Chromium client, opening Changes previously reduced messages to 640 px and overlapped their lane. The panel now falls back to 540 px, preserving 736 px messages without overlap. Closing the player restores the 1196 px automatic default; a manually chosen 996 px width still wins with the player open. The fixture displays a reconnecting placeholder; browser streaming itself was not exercised.
At a 2560 × 220 viewport (168 px canvas height), the card uses a popover. The panel now uses 1472 px instead of 1196 px while messages stay 736 px. Restoring a 2560 × 1100 viewport returns to 1196 px and restores the inline card; closing/reopening it still works. The 1440 px laptop layout remains 540 px. This uses the existing card layout resolver against the prospective canvas width, avoiding a sizing dependency on the current card presentation.

From apps/web, vp test run src/hooks/useResizableWidth.browser.test.tsx src/components/chat/canvasStore.test.ts src/components/chat/chatCanvasLayout.test.ts: 27 tests passed, including existing resize/persistence coverage.
Desktop native shell and React Native were not run. Evidence images are uploaded separately and are not part of the source diff.
Implemented with GPT-6.1 Sol using the Codex harness in T3 Code.
Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Unsaved right panels now expand into spare workspace instead of defaulting to 540 px, while retaining saved widths and existing sizing bounds. Human review is required to confirm this intentional change to the initial product layout.

Walkthrough
The preview sizing hook now tracks available width and accepts an optional preferred sibling width. In eligible inline states, the chat panel derives that width from canvas and layout measurements, then passes it to the hook.

Summary
Track available preview width apps/web/src/hooks/usePreviewPanelInlineSize.ts
The hook accepts preferredSiblingWidth and updates its available width from the measured row width. Its default remains at least 540, and an explicit defaultWidth takes precedence.
ChatRightPanel receives the canvas store and floating-preview state. When autosizing applies, it derives a preferred sibling width from canvas and layout measurements and passes it to the hook. THREAD_DETAILS_CARD_WIDTH is now exported; its value is unchanged.
No actionable merge-blocking risk was established for the panel sizing change.

Explanation
The title "feat(web): use spare space for the initial right panel width" matches the main change: the initial right panel width now comes from unused workspace width when a thread has no saved width. It is a conventional commit title in plain language and names the affected surface (web). The title does not cover the floating-preview fallback or the short-canvas handling, which is expected for a concise title.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template sections (Problem, Change, Scope and approval, Verification) and fills each one with specific content. The Problem section gives the 540 px default and the reproduction context. The Change section explains the sizing rule, the card reservation, the fallbacks, and the excluded surfaces. The Scope section states that prior maintainer approval was not found and links discussion #16825. The Verification section gives viewport tables, before and after evidence, regression checks, and the commands run. Two items are not fully covered: the Verification section says desktop native shell and React Native were not run, and it does not state that browser streaming was not exercised in every case. Both are disclosed. The template's HTML comments are absent from the description, which is acceptable.

Skip the card reservation when inline placement is unavailable.
When the canvas is wide enough but its computed card height is below 160px, detailsCardPlacement is null and the card uses popover mode. ChatRightPanel still reserves 32 + 280 + 12 = 324px, reducing the initial automatic preview width by 324px when the result remains above the 540px minimum.
Pass the resolved presentation to ChatRightPanel. Reserve the slot only when the presentation is "inline"; this preserves reservation while a closed card can reopen inline.

The existing resolveThreadDetailsCardLayout now evaluates the card at the prospective reserved canvas width, with the measured height and find-bar inset. Current presentation is itself derived from panel width, so using the prospective width lets the card recover when the window grows. This also keeps its slot while closed. When the card cannot fit vertically, the reservation includes both chat margins to preserve message width.
Verified in isolated Chromium: at 2560 × 220 (168 px canvas height), the panel grows from 1196 to 1472 px while messages remain 736 px. Restoring 2560 × 1100 returns to 1196 px and restores the inline card; close/reopen also works. The 1440 px laptop layout still uses 540 px.
check:changed passed format, lint, affected typechecks, 51 adjacent tests, and 4 applicable React compiler checks. Only the established upstream Knip baseline remains. git range-diff confirms all three PR patches are unchanged by the parallel rebase onto 701e13c; Current-head CI was cancelled by concurrency with the retried older 37d7481 run (annotation: "Canceling since a higher priority waiting request for ci-29322 exists"). The resulting Check failure reports cancelled jobs, not a source failure. Re-running CI for 4ebd777 was rejected with "Must have admin rights to Repository." A maintainer needs to rerun the current-head workflow; its cancelled checks are not verified.
