feat(web): add a custom chat width setting - #27575
Settings → Appearance → Chat width jumps from Comfortable (46rem, 736px at the default font size) to Wide (72rem, 1152px), with nothing in between. On a wide display with the sidebar open, Comfortable leaves most of the pane empty, while Wide makes lines too long to read comfortably.
Change
Chat width gets a fourth option, Custom. Choosing it shows a slider in the same row, styled like the Contrast and Glass opacity sliders. It goes from 46rem (the Comfortable width) to 96rem in 2rem steps and starts at 60rem.
packages/contracts: ChatWidth gains "custom", and the client settings gain chatCustomWidthRem (integer, 46–96, default 60).
appInit.tsx: when Custom is selected, --chat-content-max-width is set inline on <html>. Any other choice removes the inline value, so the existing data-chat-width presets work as before. The timeline, the composer and the ChatCanvas width probe already read this variable.
The value is stored in rem, like the presets, so it scales with the interface font size. The slider label shows the resulting width in px (rem × interface font size).
The row's reset button and "Restore defaults" also reset the custom width, including when it is stored while a preset is selected. Settings search matches "custom".
The slider sets aria-valuetext to the px width it displays.
No user docs change: docs/user/appearance.md does not cover Chat width. Mobile has no Chat width setting and does not read this value.
Scope and approval
This is focused configuration of an established capability. Chat width already exists (#11594) and controls one value, the --chat-content-max-width cap. This PR lets that same cap take values between and beyond the presets, from the same settings row. The default (Comfortable) and the existing presets are unchanged. There is no new entry point, no per-thread state and no other behavior change.
Verification
vp test run packages/contracts/src/settings.test.ts: 29 passed. The new case checks that saved settings with an existing preset and no custom width still decode, with the custom width defaulting to 60.
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (35 packages), tests and the React compiler check pass.
Manual check in an isolated web dev server (--home-dir .t3 --no-seed, Replay showcase thread):
Before: the dropdown lists Comfortable / Wide / Full, and the column is 736px wide.
Choosing Custom shows the slider at 960 px, and --chat-content-max-width is 60rem.
The slider responds to clicks and arrow keys. At 64rem the label shows 1024 px, and the composer measures 1024px.
The px label keeps a fixed width, so the slider doesn't shift when the value reaches four digits.
At an 18px interface font, 64rem shows 1152 px, and the timeline lane and composer measure 1152px.
The reset button returns to Comfortable, removes the inline value (computed width back to 46rem) and hides the slider.
After moving the slider to 64rem and switching back to Comfortable, the row's reset button still shows. Clicking it resets the stored custom width to 60rem.
The slider's aria-valuetext matches the px label.
Unless noted, the checks above used the default 16px interface font.
I could not check the Electron desktop app. No desktop-specific files changed, and desktop uses the changed web UI and shared settings schema.
Screenshots were taken at an 1800×1000 viewport and scaled down.

Comfortable (46rem) and Wide (72rem) leave a large gap with no option in
between. Chat width now offers Custom, which shows a slider from 46rem to
96rem in 2rem steps. The value is stored in rem so it follows the interface
font size, and the slider shows the resulting width in px.

A nondefault chatCustomWidthRem is not detected as a dirty setting when chatWidth is at its default, so RestoreDeviceDefaultsButton stays disabled and restoreDefaults returns without resetting the custom width. Include chatCustomWidthRem in the Chat width dirty check.

Walkthrough
Chat appearance settings now include a custom chat-width mode. The setting contract defines its default and bounds, the appearance panel provides a slider, and client initialization applies the selected custom width to the chat content.
The settings schema adds the custom width mode and an integer custom width from 46 to 96 rem, defaulting to 60. Patches accept the field, and a test checks the default when it is omitted.

The appearance panel adds a custom-width slider and pixel-width display. Reset and restore actions reset the custom-width value, and settings search includes “custom.”

Client initialization applies the custom width in rem and removes the width property for other modes. A CSS comment clarifies the default width’s sizing role.

Explanation
The title "feat(web): add a custom chat width setting" matches the main change. The PR adds a Custom option to the Chat width setting, with a slider for rem values from 46 to 96. The title follows the conventional commit format from the repository template and names the web scope.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. The Problem and Change sections state the gap between the Comfortable and Wide presets, the new Custom option, and the affected packages. The Scope and approval section cites the existing Chat width capability (#11594) and explains why the change is focused configuration. The Verification section lists focused tests, manual checks with observed results, and before/after screenshots. It also states what was not checked, which is the Electron desktop app. The author did not fill the template's HTML comments, which is expected. The description does not include the agent model and harness line in the template's closing comment, but it does say the work was done with Claude Code, so that requirement is met.

Include the custom width in reset checks.
If a user changes the custom width and then selects Comfortable, chatCustomWidthRem remains non-default. This check omits it, so Restore defaults can return without resetting it. The row reset check in AppearanceSettingsPanel.tsx Line 259 also hides its reset button in this state. Include the custom value in both checks. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

A non-default custom width stayed stored after switching back to a preset,
but neither the row reset nor Restore defaults offered to clear it. Both now
check the custom width too. The slider also exposes the displayed px width
through aria-valuetext.
