🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Require a Reflecta release that consumers can resolve.
If a project installs this library before the optional lenses are released, Composer ignores this library’s VCS repository and retains only 1.1.0 from the inline alias. The consuming project then cannot resolve the required implementation without its own override. Reflecta’s optional-lens PR remains open. Replace the branch alias with a published version that contains both functions before releasing this change. (getcomposer.org)

Agreed, and this is intentional for now: the branch alias only exists so CI can run against veewee/reflecta#39 before it is released. The PR description lists it as a merge blocker, and the constraint goes back to a released ^1.1 before this is merged.

@veewee Thanks for clarifying. The temporary CI dependency is intentional, and the documented merge blocker covers the release concern. No additional change is needed now.

veewee/reflecta#39 adds optional_index() and optional_property(), stacked on #37. Until 1.1.0 is tagged the branch comes in through a VCS repository aliased as 1.1.0, so this cannot be merged before the constraint is back on a release.
The built-in lenses were index() and property(), which throw for every absent element, attribute or property, and the exception was caught again by optional() or runLens. reflecta's optional_index() and optional_property() return null in those cases without throwing, which is what the caught exception turned into before, so they replace the built-in lenses unwrapped whether or not the property is optional. Custom lenses from ProvidesObjectEncoderLens and ProvidesObjectDecoderLens keep the optional() wrapping and the runLens catch.
An untyped value went through Psl's int, float and bool coercion in turn and every miss threw a CoercionException, so a plain string threw three or four times. The decoder now checks the same rules up front: the int and float checks repeat Psl's string coercion, including its trimming of leading zeros that decodes '0-5' as -5. The test compares the result with Psl itself over every short string, so a Psl upgrade that changes those rules shows up as a failure.
The untyped decode lived as a private method on ScalarTypeEncoder. As its own class the int, float and bool steps can be reused by other encoders and tested one by one against their Psl counterparts. The class is internal, so it adds no BC surface.

Stacked on #73 (#73), which added the throw counting and the baseline. This PR removes the intermediate throws that come from this package's own code: the lookups for absent elements, attributes and properties, and the try chain in the untyped scalar decoder. Output does not change.
It requires the released
veewee/reflecta ^1.1, which carriesoptional_index()andoptional_property()(veewee/reflecta#39).Absent elements and properties
ObjectAccess::buildused reflecta'sindex()andproperty()as the built-in lenses. Both throw for every absent element, attribute or property, and the exception was caught again byoptional()or byrunLensand turned into null. They are now reflecta'soptional_index()andoptional_property()from veewee/reflecta#39, which have the same contract asoptional(index())andoptional(property())but return null without throwing. A miss already gives null, so I use them without theoptional()wrapper, whether or not the property is nullable or an optional attribute.ObjectAccesskeeps its shape and theObjectEncoderloops are unchanged.Custom lenses from
ProvidesObjectEncoderLensandProvidesObjectDecoderLens,AnyElementEncoderincluded, keep theoptional()wrapping and therunLenscatch exactly as before. A regression test registers an encoder whose custom lenses throw on a missing property and checks the encoded and decoded output next to anxsd:any.I put the non throwing lenses in reflecta and added no lookup types to this package. The reads only fetch a mixed value that the per-property iso coerces anyway, so new types here would add a layer to the same pipeline, and in reflecta other users get the faster lenses too.
Untyped scalar decode
An untyped value went through Psl's int, float and bool coercion in turn, and every miss threw, so a plain word threw three or four times. The decoder now checks the same rules before deciding. The int and float checks repeat Psl's string coercion, including its trimming of leading zeros that decodes
'0-5'as-5, which I kept on purpose. I did not put a cheap guard in front of the Psl calls: decimals and exponents are the common untyped values, and a check tight enough to let them through without a throw ends up reimplementing the rules. The test uses Psl itself as the oracle: it compares the decoder with
Type\int()->coerce()andType\float()->coerce()over every string up to four characters from a set of digits, signs, dots, exponents and whitespace, plus the int boundaries, usingvar_exportso that-0.0against0.0and int against float differences fail. If a Psl upgrade changes the coercion rules, that test fails. It also passes with the lowest Psl version the constraints allow (6.1.0).Throw report
composer throws:reporton the branch suite:UnreflectableExceptionon stdClass hydrationCoercionExceptionandRestrictionExceptionin the untyped scalar chainArrayAccessExceptionfor an absent element or attributeUnreflectableExceptionandErrorfor an absent or uninitialised propertyMetadataExceptionfor a builtin soap-enc item typeAssertExceptionfrom a test encoder that calls veewee/xmlThe one
ArrayAccessExceptionandUnreflectableExceptionleft come from the custom lens regression test, which throws on purpose. stdClass hydration also dropped to 0 without a change here, because reflecta 1.1.0 (veewee/reflecta#37) hydrates stdClass with a cast and looks properties up without throwing. The two extra engine throws come from soap-enc scenarios that run through the same lookup; #75 brings that row to 0. TheassertNoThrows()tests cover every scenario from #73 except the soap-enc array, plus untyped values throughSimpleListEncoder,ApacheMapEncoderandSoapObjectEncoder. The total number of throws in the report goes up, because the scalar test calls Psl's throwing coercion as its oracle. Those throws are in the test, outside src/, and the report does not count them as intermediate.
Benchmarks
vendor/bin/phpbench run benchmarks/ --report=aggregate, Xdebug off, PHP 8.4.13 on macOS, against the baseline stored for #73:The ExtSoap subjects run ext-soap and none of this code, so their -4% to +9% is the noise on this machine. Encode stays within that noise, which is expected because the encode fixture threw 0 times before. On decode, a run in one session with only the reflecta branch and no src change shows where the gain comes from: the complete fixture's gain is reflecta#37 (benchLiteral_x1 at 64μs without the changes here, 61μs with them), and the lens change in this PR takes the sparse decode from 63μs to 47μs and from 29.6ms to 24.5ms for x500.
Left for the next PR
The engine type lookup for soap-enc arrays of a builtin item type still throws once per array. It needs a non throwing lookup in php-soap/engine, so the next PR bumps the engine and reflecta releases, brings that to 0 and adds a guard job that fails on any intermediate throw over the whole suite. That guard also has to decide what to do with the
AssertExceptionfrom the test encoder. #75 also has the end to end comparison on 3MB responses against main and #70.Summary by CodeRabbit
