No schema changes, no migration.

First slice of "Port i18n to cloud". It adds the translation setup, a language picker, and translates the parts of the app you see first. This came from the pt-PT translator who wrote in on 2026-10-07 because they couldn't change the language on splitpro.app.

What changed

  • Translation setup (src/utils/i18n.ts): i18next + react-i18next + i18next-icu. These are the libraries the self-hosted app uses, with the same ICU message format, so its catalogs work here unchanged.
    • We don't use Next's locale routing, so there are no /pt-PT/... URLs. The public site, blog and SEO pages stay English and keep their current URLs.
    • English is bundled. Each other language is fetched from /locales/<lng>/common.json only when someone picks it. Those files are left out of the PWA precache so other users don't download them.
    • A string that is missing or empty in a catalog shows in English.
  • Catalogs (public/locales/*/common.json): copied unchanged from oss-apps/split-pro main for the 15 languages the self-hosted picker offers. Those are en, de, fr, it, cs, nl, pl, pt-PT, pt-BR, sv, es, es-MX, es-AR, id and hu. Weblate on the upstream repo stays the source of truth; to update, copy the files again.
  • Language picker on the Account page. The choice is saved on the device (localStorage). It defaults to English, so nothing changes for current users until they pick a language. While a saved language loads, signed-in pages keep the existing spinner, so English doesn't flash first. <html lang> is updated to match.
  • Translated screens:
    • bottom and side navigation
    • Account page, including the feedback, edit-name, notifications and download-app drawers
    • Balances list, including the notification prompt and install-app empty state
    • Groups list
    • Activity page title and empty state

Notes for review

  • Using the upstream keys changes a few English strings slightly, to match the self-hosted app:
    • "You get" / "you get" → "You lent"
    • "Star us on Github" → "GitHub"
    • "Submit a feedback" → "Submit feedback"
    • "Remind later" → "Remind me later"
    • the notification prompt wording
  • A few upstream keys used here aren't translated in Weblate yet in any language. These are the "You owe" / "You lent" labels, the new notification prompt, and the feedback toasts. They show in English until translators fill them in upstream.
  • i18next-icu is imported through its CommonJS entry, as in upstream's config. Its ESM build fails to construct IntlMessageFormat during server rendering here.
  • Shared first-load JS goes from 209 kB to 244 kB (i18next + ICU formatter + the English catalog).

How I checked it

  • npx tsc --noEmit -p . passes. SKIP_ENV_VALIDATION=1 pnpm lint reports no new warnings or errors.
  • pnpm build passes, and the generated sw.js contains no /locales/ entries.
  • Ran next dev with a temporary page (not committed) that renders MainLayout, the picker and some ICU strings, and checked it in headless Chromium:
    • The server render interpolates ICU correctly ("Continue with Google", "split equally among 3 people").
    • With pt-PT saved, the navigation renders "Balancetes · Grupos · Adicionar · Atividade · Conta", <html lang="pt-PT"> is set, and there are no hydration warnings.
    • Picking Deutsch in the picker switches the UI to German right away and saves de.
  • Checked that every key used here exists in the English catalog.
  • Not checked: the signed-in pages in a real session. I had no local database, so the spinner-while-loading path in _app.tsx was only reviewed, not exercised.

Remaining slices

  1. Add/edit expense flow: amount and description, split types, payer, date, receipt upload, and the category and currency pickers (categories.json and currencies.json from upstream).
  2. Friend and group detail pages: expense list and details, settle up (friend and group), group info, members, create group, and delete/leave dialogs.
  3. Activity rows and the remaining toasts and errors, using ICU sentences instead of string concatenation.
  4. Strings that exist only in the cloud app (recurring expenses, default split, sponsored slots, group currency): add English keys and decide how they get translated, either a cloud component in Weblate or upstreaming the features.
  5. Sign-in and verify pages, and date and number formatting by language.
  6. Optional: detect the browser language once coverage is complete, and save the choice on the account (would need a User.preferredLanguage column like upstream) so it follows the user across devices and can be used for emails and push notifications.
  7. Optional: translate the public site and blog. This needs locale URLs and hreflang, so it's an SEO decision.

📝 Walkthrough

The application adds i18next-based language selection and loading, locale catalogs, and translated text across account controls, navigation, and selected pages. Authenticated page rendering waits for both session loading and stored-language initialization.

Changes: Application localization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Language runtime and locale resources
package.json, next.config.js, src/utils/i18n.ts, src/pages/_app.tsx, public/locales/*/common.json
Adds i18next setup, stored-language helpers, on-demand locale loading, and locale catalogs. Authenticated page rendering waits for language readiness. Locale paths are excluded from public-file precaching.
Account language selection and translated controls
src/components/Account/*, src/components/InstallApp.tsx, src/components/NotificationModal.tsx, src/pages/account.tsx
Adds a searchable language picker to the account page. Account forms, notifications, and app-installation text use translation keys.
Translated navigation and application pages
src/components/Layout/MainLayout.tsx, src/pages/activity.tsx, src/pages/balances.tsx, src/pages/groups.tsx
Replaces selected hard-coded navigation and page text with translation keys.

A failed language download can appear successful and leave English on screen while saving the failed choice. This is a bounded issue to fix or explicitly accept before merging.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Check catalog loading before saving a language.

If /locales/<code>/common.json fails to load, the awaited i18n.changeLanguage(code) promise can still resolve. This helper then stores the code, and LanguagePicker reports success while the interface falls back to English. Check the loading error through the changeLanguage callback or the loaded resource bundle before saving the code. (github.com)
