feat(sdk): read deflate-compressed ZIP entries in TDF archives - #424

OpenTDF writers store TDF entries uncompressed, but other ZTDF/TDF writers may deflate the manifest or the payload. ZipReader ignored the compression method and returned a deflated entry's raw compressed bytes as its contents, so such a TDF failed later with a misleading manifest parse or segment error. ZipReader now inflates entries that use method 8 (raw DEFLATE) and refuses every method other than 0 and 8 with an InvalidZipException that names the entry and the method. Entries keep both sizes from the central directory, zip64 extra fields included: the compressed size bounds what is read from the archive and the uncompressed size bounds what is inflated. A deflated entry that inflates to more or less than its declared size is rejected, so a small entry cannot expand past what it declares. Inflation is incremental, so a deflated payload is never held in memory as a whole. Writers are unchanged and still emit stored entries. The CRC-32 is not checked: TDF integrity is verified by the segment hashes and the root signature over the inflated bytes. A deflated entry's inflation was bounded only by the uncompressed size it declared, so a small archive could make the reader buffer a manifest a thousand times its size before validating it. A deflated entry may now declare no more than the larger of the archive's length and 10 MiB (DEFLATED_SIZE_BUDGET_FLOOR), and one that declares more is rejected before anything is inflated. This applies to the payload as well as the manifest: a deflated payload is ciphertext, which does not compress, so a legitimate one never declares more than the archive holds. TDFReader opened the payload stream in its constructor, so a deflated payload's inflater was allocated by manifest-only reads and failed loads, and released only by garbage collection. The payload is now opened by the first payload read and released when readPayload ends, whether it succeeds or fails. The constructor still checks the payload entry, without opening it, so an unreadable payload is refused before any key is requested. readPayload read exactly the manifest's segment lengths and returned, so a deflated payload that held more data than it declared, or data past its last segment, was accepted. After the last segment a deflated payload must now be at its end. Stored payloads are unchanged. Bring in main's zip reader and writer hardening alongside deflate support. Conflicts were limited to imports in ZipReaderTest. In ZipReader: - The entry data stream that main hardened against truncated archives is now the shared channel stream, used for a stored entry's data and for a deflated entry's compressed bytes. Its truncation message reports the bytes the entry occupies in the archive, which for a deflated entry is its compressed size. - The negative zip64 size check at central directory parse time now covers the compressed size as well as the uncompressed size, and replaces the separate negative-size check deflate support had added in getData, so there is one check for both. Summary
OpenTDF writers store both TDF entries (
0.payloadand the manifest) uncompressed, and that does not change here. Some other ZTDF/TDF writers deflate those entries (ZIP compression method 8).ZipReaderread the compression method and then ignored it, returning a deflated entry's raw compressed bytes as its contents, so a deflated TDF failed later with a misleading error (for a deflated manifest, a GsonJsonSyntaxException). This PR lets the reader handle those archives:ZipWriter/TDFWriterstill emit STORED entries, and their output is byte-for-byte the same.java.util.zip.Inflaterwithnowrap=true).InvalidZipException("unsupported compression method N for entry [name]; only stored (0) and deflate (8) are supported"). The check runs when an entry is read or checked, not while the central directory is parsed. That way listing an archive (andSDK.isTDF) still works, and an extra entry the reader never opens can't disqualify the archive.TDFReaderchecks the payload entry when it is constructed but doesn't open it (see Lifecycle), so an unreadable payload is refused before any KAS call. A manifest with an unsupported method fails on the firstmanifest()read.Design
Sizes come from the central directory. That includes the zip64 extra field, which was already parsed.
Entrynow keeps the compression method, the compressed size and the uncompressed size. The compressed size limits how many bytes are read from the archive, and the uncompressed size is the logical length. Local-header sizes are ignored, so archives from streaming writers (data descriptor, zeros in the local header) work too. The stored path is the same code as before, now in a helper.Size budget for deflated entries. A deflated entry may not declare an uncompressed size larger than
max(archive length, 10 MiB). The floor is the named constantZipReader.DEFLATED_SIZE_BUDGET_FLOOR.deflated entry [name] declares an uncompressed size of N bytes, more than its budget of B bytes (...).WithMaxManifestSizeis a possible follow-up.Zip-bomb rules inside the budget (deflated entries):
readasks the inflater for at most the declared bytes still left, so nothing past the declared size ever reaches the caller's buffer.... holds more data than its declared uncompressed size of N.... ended after X bytes, but its declared uncompressed size is N.InvalidZipException; for corrupt data the cause is theDataFormatException.java.util.zip.ZipFile, Go'sarchive/zipand Python'szipfiledo. They are never inflated.ZipFile, the reader feeds zlib one padding byte when the compressed data runs out (see theInflater(boolean)javadoc). If that byte produces any output, the entry is treated as truncated, so a made-up byte never reaches the caller.Payload streaming. In this SDK, reading the payload is sequential.
TDFReaderreads0.payloadthrough one stream, andTDF.Reader.readPayloadreads the segments in manifest order. Nothing reads by offset. So a deflated payload is inflated as it is read, one forward pass with an 8 KiB input buffer, and it is never held in memory as a whole. Because there is no random access, the reader needs no logic to restart from the entry start or skip forward. Each read sets the shared channel's position itself, so the manifest can be read again while the payload stream is part way through. Thread-safety is unchanged.Payload inflater lifecycle.
TDFReaderconstructor. SoSDK.readManifest, loadTDF, and a load that fails never allocate a payload inflater.Entry.checkReadable(), which runs every checkgetData()makes (method, sizes and budget, local header) without opening a stream.TDF.Reader.readPayloadreleases the payload in afinallyblock, so it is freed on success and on any failure: a read error, an integrity or decrypt failure, or a write error in the caller'sOutputStream.TDFReader.readPayloadBytesalso releases the payload itself when a read fails.readPayloadcall, which fails with "unable to read bytes for segment".manifest()returns, via try-with-resources.readPayloadand is always released before it returns, so nothing is left for a caller to close. Making the publicTDF.ReaderAutoCloseablewould add public API and turn every existing caller into a resource-leak warning.TDFReader.finishPayload()andTDFReader.closePayload().End-of-payload verification.
readPayloadreads exactly the segment lengths the manifest lists, so by itself it never looked past them. After the last segment it now callsTDFReader.finishPayload(). For a deflated payload, this requires the end of the entry: one more read must return end-of-stream, and for an inflating stream that read also runs the end-of-deflate-stream check. Otherwise it throwsInvalidZipException:hello!while declaring 5 bytes and has a valid segment hash forhello):... holds more data than its declared uncompressed size of 5.... holds data past the end of the TDF's last segment.Stored payloads keep their current behavior: nothing past the last segment is examined.
No CRC-32 check. The CRC is not verified. A TDF's integrity comes from the per-segment hashes and the root signature, which are checked over the inflated payload bytes, and from the policy binding and assertion signatures in the manifest. A CRC-32 is not a tamper check: anyone who can change the bytes can recompute it. It would catch only accidental corruption, and the segment hashes already catch that in the payload. It would also need a separate path for streaming writers, whose CRC is only in the data descriptor.
Public API. The only change is an additive
InvalidZipException(String, Throwable)constructor. Everything else new is package-private:Entrygetters for the method and sizes, andEntry.checkReadable();TDFReader.finishPayload()/closePayload();ZipReader.inflatersCreated()/openInflaters(). These are two static counters that the tests use to check the inflater lifecycle.Tests
The new tests were written first and failed against the reader before each change. For example, the first end-to-end test failed with
JsonSyntaxException. In the review round, the budget, lifecycle and end-of-payload tests each failed before their fix (thehello!case decrypted silently).TDFTest:testDecryptingATDFWithDeflatedEntries: takes a multi-segment TDF this SDK wrote, repacks it withjava.util.zip.ZipOutputStream, and decrypts it end to end with the test KAS.
