Description

When the openmc executable stops because of an uncaught C++ exception, openmc.run() and related functions read the exception message from the output and raise it as a RuntimeError. The parser in openmc/executor.py only knows the libstdc++ format (terminate called after throwing ... what(): <message>). With libc++, which is the default C++ library on macOS, the same failure prints

libc++abi: terminating due to uncaught exception of type std::runtime_error: <message>

so on macOS users get RuntimeError: OpenMC aborted unexpectedly. instead of the actual error.

This shows up in tests/unit_tests/test_tally_nuclide_names.py (added in #4130): all five tests fail on macOS because Tally::set_nuclides throws std::runtime_error("Could not add nuclide ...") and the message is lost.

Summary

  • The parsing of the error message moves out of _run() into its own function, _get_error_message(output) in openmc/executor.py, which _run() calls. It also recognizes the libc++ format and returns the text after the exception type, in the same way it handles what(): for libstdc++.

  • The existing ERROR: and what(): branches are unchanged, and checked first.

  • If the libc++ line has no message after the exception type (e.g. for an exception that doesn't derive from std::exception), the usual "OpenMC aborted unexpectedly." is raised instead of an empty message.

  • New tests/unit_tests/test_executor.py:

    • tests _get_error_message() directly with each of the output formats (OpenMC's ERROR:, libstdc++, libc++, libc++ without a message, and an unrecognized failure);
    • checks that a failed run raises the parsed message, by monkeypatching subprocess.Popen so that openmc.plot_geometry() sees a failed process with libc++ output.

Neither needs the openmc executable or nuclear data, so the libc++ case is also covered on Linux CI.

Testing

On an M2 Mac (macOS 26.6, Apple clang 17), on develop at 3aec0ed:

  • test_executor.py: 6 passed. With the executor.py from develop, the libc++ case fails.
  • test_tally_nuclide_names.py: 5 failed before, 5 passed after.

Prepared with help from Claude Code (Opus 5.5, medium effort).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Failures from OpenMC now provide a clearer error message by extracting and normalizing the relevant text from process output.
    • libc++ exception output is parsed to show the underlying message without its exception-type prefix. If no usable message is available, OpenMC reports that it aborted unexpectedly.
    • Error messages from OpenMC and libstdc++ output formats continue to be handled.

📝 Walkthrough

The executor now extracts and normalizes error messages from OpenMC, libstdc++, and libc++ output when a process exits with an error. Unit tests cover recognized formats, fallback behavior, and the error raised by a failed geometry plot.

Use Path for the executable fixture.

Create fake_openmc with Path.cwd() / 'fake_openmc'. Use fake_openmc.open(...) and fake_openmc.chmod(0o755). Pass str(fake_openmc) to openmc.plot_geometry if that API requires a string. As per coding guidelines: “Use pathlib.Path for filesystem operations” and “Use pathlib.Path in new Python code, not os.path.”

@GuySten since this comes from the new error message in #4130, would you mind taking a look when you have a moment? On macOS the message currently gets lost because libc++ formats uncaught exceptions differently, so test_tally_nuclide_names.py fails there (and the macOS job in #4194 with it). I’ve also addressed CodeRabbit’s two points.

Thanks for this improvement @kavyawadhwa134! One idea on testing exception message parsing.

I sincerely appreciate the test here to verify that the formats of all these exceptions are handled appropriately.

I'm wondering if there's a more elegant and portable solution than writing a mock executable file within this test. I'm wondering about your thoughts on using something like monkeypatch to mock the openmc executable for the scope of this test only -- though I suppose really what that really might mean is monkeypatch-ing subprocess.Popen for the duration of this test. Then a call to any function that in turn calls the openmc executable will instead result in a call to that mocked object with controlled output. Thoughts?

Alternatively, and more simply, we could factor out the section into it's own function and test it with these strings directly.

@pshriwise thanks, both are nicer than the stand-in executable. I did both: the parsing is now its own function, _get_error_message(output), which _run() calls and which the test checks with the strings directly, and there's one more test that monkeypatches subprocess.Popen so a failed run through openmc.plot_geometry() raises the parsed message. I also added a case for an unrecognized failure.

Use a raw string or re.escape for the match pattern.

Ruff RUF043 flags the . and $ metacharacters. The pattern is correct as a regex, but a raw string makes the intent explicit and clears the warning.
