get_energy_index() returns i = 0 with an interpolation factor of zero when a distribution is tabulated at a single incident energy, since no interval exists. The samplers nevertheless read distribution_[i + 1] unconditionally, which is an out-of-bounds access on such a table -- the crash reported in openmc-dev#1098 for a delayed neutron spectrum with one incident energy. Add upper_energy_index(), which clamps the upper index of the incident energy interval to the end of the grid, and use it in ContinuousTabular, CorrelatedAngleEnergy, KalbachMann and AngleDistribution. For a grid with two or more points get_energy_index() keeps i <= n - 2, so the helper always returns i + 1 and results are unchanged. For a single incident energy the interpolation factor is zero and interpolating between the clamped indices is a no-op, so the distribution is sampled as tabulated instead of reading past the end of the array. With a single histogram interpolation region, use the table at the lower incident energy as tabulated, as ContinuousTabular already does, instead of sampling between adjacent tables and interpolating. When a multi-region incident-energy histogram reaches the discrete-line branch,
histogram_interpremains false. The expression atsrc/distribution_energy.cpp:207-213therefore interpolates the line energy between adjacent incident-energy tables. Histogram interpolation must use the lower-table line energy for the active region. This is a localized correctness issue in the sampling path. It affects inputs that use multiple interpolation regions with histogram data, but it does not establish a broad workflow failure or require a high-effort redesign. Use the active ACE interpolation code for discrete lines.
histogram_interp is enabled only for a single-region incident-energy grid. In a reachable multi-region interval whose applicable ACE code is histogram, this branch therefore uses r and returns an interpolated outgoing line between e_lo[k] and e_hi[k]. The repository’s interpolation contract defines histogram interpolation as the lower tabulated value. Resolve the interpolation code for the incident-energy interval before this branch, and pin the line to e_lo[k] when that code is histogram. Keep the existing linear interpolation and single-region behavior unchanged.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Use the lower table’s line for every histogram interval.
When the ACE incident-energy grid has multiple regions and the active region uses histogram interpolation, histogram_interp remains false because this sampler only recognizes the single-region case. The changed expression therefore interpolates e_lo[k] and e_hi[k] using r. ACE histogram interpolation requires the lower table’s discrete-line energy. This produces an incorrect outgoing energy for reachable multi-region histogram intervals.
Set histogram_interp from the active ACE interpolation region before this expression, while preserving the existing single-region behavior.

Fix ACE law 4/44/61 sampling of discrete lines, missing continua and single incident energies
This PR fixes three defects in the incident-energy interpolation that
ContinuousTabular(law 4),CorrelatedAngleEnergy(law 61) andKalbachMann(law 44) share. All three are in the same block of each function, so they are
fixed together. The third one is the crash reported in #1098.
Reference for the format and for MCNP's handling: LA-UR-12-26785,
Modification of ENDF Law 4/44/61 Sampling in MCNP6.
1. Discrete line energies were not interpolated
All three samplers picked one incident energy grid
land returned that grid'stabulated line energy unchanged:
This is correct for a line at a fixed energy, because both grids hold the same
value. It is wrong for a line whose energy changes with incident energy. A
monoenergetic beam then produces two peaks for one physical line, and a
continuous beam produces a comb quantised onto the incident energy grid.
ENDF-102 §0.6.2.1 gives the rule. The method of corresponding points
interpolates along the line joining the kth points of the two distributions.
The manual also names what goes wrong otherwise: artificial peaks appear when
the distributions shift with energy. LA-UR-12-26785 Eq. 3 is the same
interpolation,
E_f = E_{i,k} + r (E_{i+1,k} - E_{i,k}). OpenMC alreadyapplies unit-base interpolation to the continuum part of the same table, so
this also removes an internal inconsistency.
With histogram interpolation on the incident grid (a single region with
INT = 1), the table at the lower incident energy applies as tabulated across
the whole interval. All three samplers then use
l = iand the lower table'sline energy, and do not interpolate between grids.
ContinuousTabularalreadyhandled histogram tables this way;
CorrelatedAngleEnergyandKalbachManndid not, and now do.
Affected data. I scanned ENDF/B-VIII.1 (557 files) for tables where
e_out[k]differs between adjacent incident energies. A 1e-5 relativetolerance excludes the round-off from six significant digits in the ENDF
fixed-format fields. That leaves 13 tables:
Every MT=102 entry matches the ENDF primary-photon relation
E_gamma = E_g + A/(A+1) * E_nto four decimals. These are primary capturegammas, i.e. lines whose energy is meant to move with incident energy.
ENDF/B-VII.1 had two such tables; VIII.1 has thirteen, several with more than a
thousand lines.
The effect grows with incident energy. It is negligible for thermal capture
and largest in the fast range, where these capture cross sections are small.
It corrects spectrum shape for fast-capture and gamma-spectroscopy work and
will not move k-eff.
2. Out-of-bounds read when a table has no continuum
e_out[n_discrete]is the first continuum outgoing energy. When a table holdsonly discrete lines, this reads past the end of the array. The ACE format
requires the same number of discrete lines at every incident energy, but it
does not require a continuum at each one. MCNP made the same wrong assumption:
The out-of-bounds value is used.
E_i_1enters the unit-base transform withweight
1 - r. So whenever the continuum is sampled from the other grid, theoutgoing energy includes whatever lies past the array. LANL found this in MCNP
through a negative emission energy in Ac-226 (n,4n). The usual result is a
wrong energy with no warning.
ContinuousTabularlooked guarded byif (!histogram_interp && n_energy_out > 1). But at that pointn_energy_outstill holds grid l's size and onlybecomes grid
i's size on the next line, so the guard tests the wrong table.Fix. The code checks each side for a continuum. If only one side has one,
the interpolation factor collapses onto that side:
This is MCNP6's rule for neutrons. MCNP6 also weights the choice of grid by each
grid's continuum probability (LA-UR-12-26785 Eq. 8). OpenMC needs no change for
that: it picks the grid
lfirst and then samples discrete or continuum fromlalone, so the probabilities already come out the same, and a grid with nocontinuum is never sampled for one.
Photons are treated the same as neutrons. For photons, MCNP6 reads a
missing continuum as "no emission". It then sets the unit-base bounds from a
0–1 eV stand-in continuum, which pulls sampled energies toward zero near that
grid point. This PR does not do that. Emission probability is already set by
the CDFs, so a sampled continuum energy stays within the bounds of the grid that
has a continuum, for any particle type.
Affected data. In ENDF/B-VIII.1, 4557 tables consist only of discrete lines.
These never give a wrong value, because the discrete branch returns first. But
the invalid read happens on every call, so ASan fires on any coupled
neutron-photon run with discrete level data. Wrong numbers come from tables
that have a continuum at some incident energies but not at others. For
ENDF/B-VII.1 these exactly reproduce Appendix D of LA-UR-12-26785. VIII.1 adds
isotopes that are not minor actinides: Cs-134, Dy-159, Os-189, Os-190, Pm-147,
Ta-180m and U-233. Cs-134, Pm-147 and Dy-159 are fission products found in any
burnt fuel.
3. Single incident energy (#1098)
With a single incident energy,
get_energy_index()returnsi = 0and aninterpolation factor of zero. All three samplers, and
AngleDistribution, stillread
energy_[i + 1]/distribution_[i + 1], which is past the end of thearray. #1098 reported this for a TENDL delayed-neutron spectrum.
The new helper
upper_energy_index()returnsi + 1when that index exists andiotherwise. On grids with two or more points it always returnsi + 1, soresults do not change. With a single point, interpolating between
iandidoes nothing, and the table is sampled as tabulated.
Closes #1098.
Behaviour
not move. If
e_hi[k] == e_lo[k], thene_lo[k] + r * (e_hi[k] - e_lo[k])is exactly
e_lo[k]for any finiter; this was checked for 33 values ofr. Histogram tables use the lower grid's value directly. Of the 4591 tableswith discrete lines in ENDF/B-VIII.1, only 13 can give a different number.
continuum:
r_c == rand the bounds are identical.ContinuousTabularalsoreplaces the
n_energy_out > 1test with a test of the actual denominator,E_hi != E_lo, which is what it stood in for.prn(seed)call count is unchanged on every pathexcept one. For law 44/61 tables with histogram interpolation on the incident
grid, choosing the grid no longer draws a random number, as already happens
for law 4. No law 44/61 table in the NNDC library uses histogram incident
interpolation, so reference results are not affected.
weightwindows/sharedchanges. H-1 capture(MT102) emits a primary gamma at about 2.2233 MeV whose energy depends on the
incident energy. The line energy is now interpolated between adjacent
incident-energy tables, instead of being taken from one table chosen at
random. This shifts the gamma energy by up to a few eV (relative shift
≤ 4e-6). That moves one photon-flux sum in the 7th significant digit
(7.459793E-01 → 7.459794E-01).
weightwindows/localsees the same kind ofsub-eV shifts, but none of its printed digits change.
Follow-up
The two secondary distributions share 89 of about 100 lines, and all three
functions share 61. Every defect here was present in some copies and not in
others. A separate PR that consolidates the shared CDF search, inversion and
unit-base transform is ready and will follow.
That PR will also handle incident-energy grids with more than one interpolation
region. Today all three samplers honor histogram interpolation only when the
grid has a single region, and treat every other case as lin-lin. That covers
the choice of table, the line energy and the unit-base transform. The fix is to
look up the active region once and use it for all three steps, which is easiest
once the code is shared. In ENDF/B-VII.1 the only such grids are the Cu-63 and
Cu-65 capture-gamma continua (MF15 MT102: NBT [2, 7, 9], INT [1, 2, 1], which
is histogram below 1 keV and above 20 MeV and lin-lin in between). The NNDC ACE
law 4 data and OpenMC's HDF5 data carry this grid through unchanged. These
distributions have no discrete lines, so only the table choice and the
unit-base transform of the continuum are affected.
