Summary

hostBuildOverlay (charly/charly/build_overlay.go) composes one value, base, and uses it for two different things: base is a BOX NAME (it feeds collectOverlayCandies and ResolvedBox{Name: base}), while BaseImage is an IMAGE REF. The old tagged branch built BaseImage as base + ":" + tag, which names the right repository only when the box address and the image repository happen to coincide. The box build names its repo from the box's LEAF under the box/namespace registry, so they do not coincide for a namespaced box.

Measured in #968, bed run .check/charly.check-sidecar-pod/2026.307.2144/: the build produced ghcr.io/opencharly/check-k8s-deploy-app:charly.check-sidecar-pod-2026.307.2144, while the overlay prep composed charly.check-k8s-deploy-app:<tag> and podman rejected it:

short-name "charly.check-k8s-deploy-app" did not resolve to an alias and no containers-registries.conf(5) was found

This change:

  • reuses the build path's own naming rule for BOTH branches — resolveBoxImageRegistryName (registry = the box's own registry, else its NAMESPACE's defaults.registry; repo = spec.LeafName(box)) plus container.ResolveShellImageRef — instead of string concatenation;
  • fixes isQualifiedRef so a dot alone does not make a ref "qualified": a namespace-qualified BOX address is not an image repo;
  • keeps base itself as the box name for collectOverlayCandies and ResolvedBox{Name: base}.

The untagged branch had the same defect in two places: it asked the local-CalVer resolver about the box ADDRESS (charly.check-k8s-deploy-app, which matches no local repo because local refs are named by the leaf), and on refusal isQualifiedRef's dot rule returned the box address as a "qualified" fallback. Both halves are fixed; the resolver is now asked about the leaf, and the refusal propagates for a bare name (#867's contract is preserved).

resolveImageRefForEnsure was refactored onto the same resolveBoxImageRegistryName helper, so there is one naming rule rather than two (R2).

Refs #968 — I will close #968 explicitly after this merges; no closing keyword is relied on.

How tested

Change class: Go runtime code in the charly core. Attribution tier: analysed on a live system; see "What is not proved" for the clause that diverges (the disposable bed is owed by the coordinator after merge).

R7 — the coverage fails without the change

The regression test was added FIRST and run against the unmodified production tree:

$ go test -run 'TestHostBuildOverlay_NamespacedBoxNamesTheBuiltImage' -count=1 .
rc=1
--- FAIL: TestHostBuildOverlay_NamespacedBoxNamesTheBuiltImage (0.00s)
    build_overlay_namespaced_test.go:58: reply.BaseImage = "ns.mybox:check-bed-2026.307.2144", want "ghcr.io/example/mybox:check-bed-2026.307.2144" — the overlay must name the image the box build produced, not the box address
FAIL
FAIL	github.com/opencharly/charly/charly	4.398s

It drives the REAL hostBuildOverlay seam (not a predicate stand-in) over a temp project whose box lives in an imported namespace carrying its own defaults.registry — the shape the umbrella's import of this repo has. After the fix, on the head below:

$ go test -count=1 -run 'TestHostBuildOverlay_NamespacedBoxNamesTheBuiltImage|TestOverlayBaseRef_|TestIsQualifiedRef|TestOverlayBaseRefFromResolution' .
rc=0
ok  	github.com/opencharly/charly/charly	4.513s

The untagged arm cannot be driven end to end in a unit test because production resolves the newest local CalVer through the container engine; its DECISION is covered by TestOverlayBaseRef_* with an injected resolver, and its identity comes from the same resolveBoxImageRegistryName helper the tagged-arm test exercises. TestIsQualifiedRef gains the namespaced-box case.

What is not proved

The end-to-end consumer proof is the disposable bed charly.check-sidecar-pod (26+ minutes; it needs a disposable VM). It is run by the coordinator AFTER this merges. This PR does not claim fully tested and validated, and does not claim the bed.

Rulebook compliance

  • R0 — loaded /charly-internals:go, go-quality, strict-policy, root-cause-analyzer and /charly-internals:git-workflow before any action.
  • R1 — the anomaly is A pod bed whose image is a bare box name cannot deploy: the prep hands the plugin an unqualified ref and the alias tag fails #968's measured podman failure. Its mechanism (a BOX ADDRESS used as an IMAGE ref) is verified by reproducing it at the real seam in the failing-before paste above; the root fix ships with that regression test as the preventing control. No separable non-blocking finding surfaced, so ## Filed issues is empty.
  • R2 — one naming rule: resolveBoxImageRegistryName + container.ResolveShellImageRef, shared by resolveImageRefForEnsure and hostBuildOverlay. The old concatenation is deleted, not kept beside the new rule.
  • R3 — no sleep, retry, magic registry or fallback that hides a failure. The registry is read from the project (img.Registry || nsCfg.Defaults.Registry); nothing hardcodes ghcr.io/opencharly. A box ref that does not resolve fails loud; an untaggable bare name still propagates the resolver's refusal.
  • R4 — product fixed before prose; no documentation routes around the defect.
  • R5 — the old composition is deleted. Claim-keyed sweep:
    $ git grep -n -F 'base + ":" + tag' -- '*.go'
    charly/build_overlay_namespaced_test.go:15:// which is why the old `base + ":" + tag` composition worked by accident; for a namespaced box it

    The only remaining hit is the new test's historical comment.
  • R6 — git status was checked before editing and is empty after the commit. The work landed on fix/968-namespaced-base-ref in a session worktree; no force-push, no bypass, no unrelated file touched.
    $ git status --porcelain | wc -l
    0

  • R7 — see the failing-before/passing-after paste; the changed path (hostBuildOverlay) executes in the test, and the emitted BaseImage is asserted exactly at its boundary.
  • R8 — this change crosses no live service. The untagged branch's engine resolver is not exercised against a live engine in this PR; that is stated rather than mocked.
  • R9 — the binary was built worktree-locally with scripts/bootstrap-charly.sh; ./bin/charly version = 2026.307.1232; no new runtime OS dependency.
  • R10 — not claimed here: the live bed is the coordinator's post-merge proof (see "What is not proved").

Change classification

  • Type: bug fix in the charly core (Go runtime behavior).
  • Consumer impact: for a namespaced box, BaseImage changes from the box ADDRESS (charly.check-k8s-deploy-app:<tag>, which the engine cannot resolve) to the image the build produced (ghcr.io/opencharly/check-k8s-deploy-app:<tag>). For an unqualified box with a project registry, it also becomes the build's fully qualified repo instead of the short name; with no registry configured the composed ref is unchanged. The box name itself, and every consumer of it (collectOverlayCandies, ResolvedBox.Name), is unchanged.
  • Breaking change + rollback: none — no API, schema, or config shape changes; the overlay simply names the artifact the build already produced. Rollback is a revert of this commit.

Filed issues

None. R1 surfaced no separable non-blocking finding; the one defect found is the subject of this PR and is fixed in it.

hostBuildOverlay composed BaseImage as `<box name>:<tag>`, but BaseImage is an
IMAGE ref: the box build names its repo by the box LEAF under the box/namespace
registry. For `charly.check-k8s-deploy-app` that produced
`charly.check-k8s-deploy-app:<tag>`, which podman rejects as an unresolvable
short name, while the build had produced
`ghcr.io/opencharly/check-k8s-deploy-app:<tag>`.

Compose BOTH branches from the build path's own (registry, leaf) rule, through
a shared resolveBoxImageRegistryName + container.ResolveShellImageRef, and stop
counting a dot alone as an image-ref qualifier (a namespace-qualified box
address is not an image repo). `base` stays the box name for the overlay candy
set and ResolvedBox.Name.

Review — BLOCK

Head SHA: 92c13bfe82a85268892e2b11a8fda3ef713ec150 (branch: fix/968-namespaced-base-ref)
Change class: Go runtime code in charly core (bug fix).

Blocks

  1. A2 / R10 — the required disposable bed run is deferred to post-merge, so the runtime change lands unproven. The body classifies this as a core Go runtime change but explicitly declines the change-class gate: "The end-to-end consumer proof is the disposable bed charly.check-sidecar-pod … It is run by the coordinator AFTER this merges. This PR does not claim fully tested and validated, and does not claim the bed" and "R10 — not claimed here: the live bed is the coordinator's post-merge proof." A runtime change requires a FRESH-rebuild run on a disposable: true target with pasted output before merge; a unit test driving hostBuildOverlay does not substitute for it. "The coordinator runs it after merge" is the forbidden "will test later / follow-up" framing (R1/CONC) — and it is not a separable non-blocking finding (it is this change's own proof obligation), so it cannot be discharged by ## Filed issues either. The author must run the R10-required bed (charly.check-sidecar-pod, the bed that reproduced A pod bed whose image is a bare box name cannot deploy: the prep hands the plugin an unqualified ref and the alias tag fails #968) against the fresh rebuild on a disposable: true target, paste the result, and update How tested to the matching tier. Only then may this land.

Non-blocking notes

  • A1 — "How tested" is a promise, not a run. The How tested block names the disposable target and the fresh-rebuild bootstrap, but the disposable target is only promised (run by the coordinator AFTER this merges) rather than executed; once the bed is run per Block 1, this resolves.
  • R8 — body wording vs. test. The body says the untagged arm's engine resolver "is not exercised against a live engine in this PR; that is stated rather than mocked," yet TestOverlayBaseRef_UntaggedAsksTheRepoName injects a fake resolver. The fake is a legitimate decision-logic seam (not a fake of a network service), so this is not an R8 violation, but the "stated rather than mocked" phrasing should be tightened to avoid overclaiming.
  • ARCH — placement: CORRECT. The change fixes existing core host-build seams (build_overlay.go, host_build_box_ref_resolve.go) in place, reuses the existing resolveBoxImageRegistryName helper, adds no new core import of an sdk kit, and grows no alias file. It does not move capability into core.
  • R2/R3/R5/R6/R7 — satisfied from the diff: one naming rule shared via resolveBoxImageRegistryName; no sleep/retry; the old base + ":" + tag composition is deleted and the grep paste shows only the test's historical comment; no force-push/hook bypass; the regression test asserts BaseImage at the seam.
  • A3 — tier honest: analysed on a live system is not inflated; it is simply insufficient to clear A2/R10.

Verdict: BLOCK

STATUS — the bed is running now, and it is running against this change PLUS plugin-deploy-pod#44, because neither half passes it alone.

The block is accepted: a core runtime change needs its disposable bed executed before merge, and "the coordinator runs it after merge" was the forbidden follow-up framing. I am running it.

One fact the block could not know, and it matters for how the evidence reads. charly.check-sidecar-pod deploys a qualified pod (charly/check-sidecar-pod over box check-k8s-deploy-app), so it exercises both sides of the defect:

  • with this change alone (pinned plugin, which sends no Image): the host falls back to req.DeployName = charly/check-sidecar-pod, whose leaf names the image ghcr.io/opencharly/check-sidecar-pod:<tag> — not the image the build produced (ghcr.io/opencharly/check-k8s-deploy-app:<tag>). Still red.
  • with plugin-deploy-pod#44 alone (old host): the plugin now sends the resolved box name, and the old host composes check-k8s-deploy-app:<tag> unqualified. Still red.
  • with both: the plugin sends the box name, and this change names the image from (registry, leaf name, tag) — the pair is what the bed can pass on.

So the run I have started is:

CHARLY_PLUGIN_DIR=/tmp/pdp46-plugins CHARLY_PLUGIN_ONLY=1 \
  <charly built from 92c13bfe, version 2026.307.2304> check run charly.check-sidecar-pod

where /tmp/pdp46-plugins/plugin-deploy-pod is built from plugin-deploy-pod#44's exact tree c8ff5105. That is the documented dev-plugin mechanism for proving a cross-repo fix before either side lands, not a workaround around a gate.

What I will paste when it exits: the bed's own PASS (steps=N) line, the per-step N steps: N passed, 0 failed, 0 skipped, and summary.yml (ok: true, errors: 0). If it is red I will paste that and take the honest tier instead.

Landing order once it is green: this PR first (producer), then plugin-deploy-pod#44 with the same bed output, then the issue closes.

The non-blocking notes are accepted as written — including that "stated rather than mocked" in the untagged arm overclaimed what an injected resolver proves; that wording gets tightened in the same round.

STATUS — the paired bed completed and is RED at config, after passing deploy-add. Final, not partial.

Run 2026.307.2336, driver charly 2026.307.2304 (built from 92c13bfe), plugin from plugin-deploy-pod#44's tree c8ff5105:

[vm-build]    PASS   4m26.827s
[image-build] PASS  11m38.249s
[check-image] PASS   2m48.833s
[deploy-add]  PASS  27m25.455s     ← this PR's path, proven
[config]      FAIL  19m26.275s
[cleanup]     PASS   1m16.456s
RC=1

summary.yml names the driver and the durations; the failure is config, and the overlay this PR exists to make buildable was produced:

Overlay image ready: charly/check-sidecar-pod-overlay:e87ab4127d87

So this PR's own path passes the bed. The step that died with short-name "charly.check-k8s-deploy-app" did not resolve to an alias on the old host now completes, and it needed both halves — measured, not argued.

The bed is nevertheless red, and R10 is therefore unmet. The failure is on the charly config path:

image not found in local storage: charly.check-k8s-deploy-app:<tag>

That is this PR's own defect class — a dotted box name used as an image repo, unqualified — but at a site this PR does not change: the ref is composed plugin-side by qualifyImageRef, which returns the bare ref when registry is empty, and #1105 fixes the host build path, not this one. The check-retention-fixture error after it is downstream: with no such image locally, ensure-image falls back to a local build and dies validating an unrelated box.

Tier stays analysed on a live system. I will not call a 4-of-5 bed a pass, and fully tested and validated is not available.

A fix for the config-path qualification is in progress on the consumer branch. When that bed is green end to end I will paste the complete run here and on #44, and land this PR first (producer).

STATUS — the bed now passes every changed path and stops on charly#1083, already open. Recording the exact boundary.

Run 2026.308.0128, driver charly 2026.307.2304, plugin built from this branch's tree 6cc21e9d:

[vm-build]    PASS   3m40.410s
[image-build] PASS  11m30.008s
[check-image] PASS   2m41.840s
[deploy-add]  PASS  26m51.615s   →  Overlay image ready: charly/check-sidecar-pod-overlay:0ad8c11241e9
[config] PASS 19m43.532s → Wrote …/charly-charly-check-sidecar-pod.container ; Reloaded systemd user daemon
[start]       PASS   5m58.127s
[wait-ready]  PASS   1m30.075s
[bring-up-members] FAIL 17m42.157s: peer "check-sidecar-pod-ephvm" (vm deploy add): exit status 1
[cleanup]     PASS   1m14.525s

Every path this change touches executed live and passed, including the one that failed in the previous run:

  • deploy-add — the overlay builds.
  • config — the quadlet is written and systemd reloaded. Last run died here with image not found in local storage: charly.check-k8s-deploy-app:<tag>; that error is gone.
  • start / wait-ready — the pod actually came up on that overlay, so it is runnable, not merely present.

Where it stops is not this change. bring-up-members creates the member VM and then refuses the deploy:

Created VM charly-check-sidecar-pod-ephvm (libvirt session)
error: resolving ref "charly.eval-vm" for target "pod": not found as a box or candy …

eval-vm is a vm: entity (charly/charly.yml:170), and the resolution is being attempted for target pod — the substrate provider for a bare-named deploy-level member is never connected. That is opencharly/charly#1083, open, with the same mechanism described end to end, including the "refused AFTER the member's side effect" ordering we just reproduced.

It is unreachable by this change. The member path is sdk/deploykit.BringUpMembers + the substrate dispatch; this PR touches podPrepareVenue/podRebuild/resolveDeployRefLocal. No diff line is on the failing path.

Tier, stated precisely: this PR does not claim fully tested and validated, because the bed is not green. It claims analysed on a live system, and the live run above is the evidence — every changed path green, the residual failure filed and named.
