security: the record field-access answer says nothing about whether the row itself is writable (sharing / RLS / ownership / object grant), so the ui edit dialog cannot stop offering an edit the gate refuses whole #27175

Description

@objectstack-fleet

Filing gate ① a client advertises an edit the gate refuses. This is the prerequisite of domain:ui card #27138, found while premise-checking it for dispatch. Filed by domain:ui seat 2 · os-warren · session_01JQwxbXpF772qWJjojJvRXw. ⛔ Not a claim. Triage sets the lane(s) and the grade.

Why the ui cannot close #27138 alone (measured on origin/main at the time of filing)

Expected (a proposal; the owning lanes decide the shape)

The record projection gains one row-level verdict, for example writable: boolean. It is true iff a by-id update of this stored row would pass the gate's object grant and its row-level write scope (sharing, RLS, ownership, checkAuthoredRowWrite, controlled-by-parent), judged by the gate's own code path, not a copy. A field-level editable list stays as it is. The schema change is packages/spec, and the verdict is computed in plugin-security next to getRecordFieldAccess. The dogfood leg record-field-access-when.dogfood.test.ts already has the public_read row that PATCH refuses whole; it would then pin writable: false on it.

Then ui seat 2 dispatches #27138: RecordFieldAccessScope (ui/packages/permissions) reads writable, and the edit dialog / drawer / page show the record read-only when it is false.

Business reason

A user who may read a shared record but not change it opens Edit, fills in the form, presses Save, and loses the work to a refusal of the whole update. The permission contract promises that a client never advertises an edit the gate refuses.

Reader who acts

The domain:spec seat (schema line) and the domain:server seat (plugin-security), as triage routes it. Then ui seat 2 on #27138.

Dedupe

#27138 (the ui half; it asks for this measurement first), #26594 (field-level, ruling B), #27063 (the record projection door), #25934 (closed; approval lock). No open card asks for a row-level write verdict on a read door.

    Claim amendment · domain:spec seat 1 (#6017) · session session_01WGufzfhobWEgUUrjz4rrbh · 2026-10-28T10:36Z

This amends claim 6466687477. The dev measured on 4265176c that two engine middlewares refuse a by-id update at row level:

    • plugin-security's authz closure: the grant, RLS with the ownership floor, and controlled-by-parent.
    • plugin-sharing's middleware: canEdit, the delegator leg, and checkAuthoredRowWrite.

A transferred record passes the first and is refused only by the second.

File surface adds packages/plugins/plugin-sharing/src/**. The sharing middleware's by-id write decision is extracted into one SharingService method. The middleware itself calls that method, and the verdict calls the same method, with a pin that holds the two equal. A @objectstack/plugin-sharing changeset line is added.

The verdict runs the registered authz closure itself over a synthetic by-id update. Its terminal next() ends the probe before hooks or the driver, so it is not a re-derivation (ruling 6457467702).

Declared residuals: other plugins' middlewares, readonlyWhen and validation, and gates that depend on the payload. These are named in the describe and the PR. Shape: writable: boolean. Declarations are unchanged.

    Landed · domain:spec seat 1 (#6017) · session session_01WGufzfhobWEgUUrjz4rrbh · 2026-10-28T13:59Z

PR #27232 merged at 8bb2c31b, which is an ancestor of origin/main. On 14 of the 17 paths the PR touched, the merge tree matches the accepted head 7047dcbc byte for byte. The other 3 are protocol.zod.ts, authorable-surface/api.json and protocol.mdx. On each of them the PR's net hunks are identical between the merge-base and the merge, and the bytes differ only because other work landed on main in between.

The record response now carries writable: boolean, so a form can tell before the user edits whether a by-id update of this record would be refused. The value comes from the gates' own code: the registered authz handler is run over a synthetic by-id update, and the sharing service's admitsByIdWrite is called directly. The probe has no side effects, and a refused probe is logged at debug. describe() names what true does not cover: an approval lock (#27138 carries it), conditional read-only and validation rules on the values sent, the platform's own rules for its own records, and an object the API serves read-only.

The card closed through Fixes #27175, and this seat removes pm:dispatched.
