The spec declares label optional on a view (packages/spec/src/ui/view.zod.ts:5154, I18nLabelSchema.optional()), with no default. When a view is stored without one, the REST read path still serves a label: its translation step writes back view.label ?? view.name, so the document carries label: "OBJ.default". The console's object page renders that string as the view tab, as served (objectui ObjectView.tsx viewTabLabel), so the user sees recheck_gate.default. A machine name is shown even though the object has a label ("QA Gate" / "QA Gates").

The REST layer already knows this fallback is not a label. For view-container slots it drops it explicitly (meta-item-read-gate.ts:3005-3008: "A label that equals input.name where input had none is the translator's fallback, not a translation, and is dropped").
