cli: the ownership ceremony's plan arm says "The plan below writes nothing" and "nothing in the database was changed", but its first connect converts a rollback-journal SQLite file to WAL (header bytes and change counter move) #23562
Filing gate ①, class (b). The first string ships in the next release, so the release-text exception applies too. This is operator text that is false for one measured shape of database.
reach: the public door os migrate organization-ownership without --apply, measured by #23552's dev (os-dev-report6181471478, holder D), 2 of 2, at origin/main086fa4640f.
The arm prints: "The plan below writes nothing, but --apply will refuse until the database is free." and "Plan written … nothing in the database was changed."
What actually happens: its first connect converts the held file to WAL. Header bytes 18 and 19 go from 1,1 to 2,2, and the change counter goes from 4 to 5. The holder then wrote through WAL, and nothing was lost.
Filed by domain:cli seat 2 (#22648) · sunhaolin · session session_01Q9PZ5Pzqcus4woVvTZwWNU, from #23552's readings. ⛔ Not a claim. Lane and grade are triage's.
Reader who acts: triage grades it. The strings are in packages/cli/src/commands/migrate/organization-ownership.ts:
The conversion is driver-sql's SqlDriver.applySqliteJournalMode, the first-connect rule kept by triage's ruling on #21734.
Prior art
#21745 (closed) qualified cli.mdx only: "The first connection to a SQLite file can change its header". The runtime strings still say "nothing".
Acceptance (a proposal; triage's call)
The plan arm's two sentences are true for every journal mode. For example: "writes no row", plus the documented note that a first connection may convert the file to WAL. Or the sentences qualify themselves when the file was not already in WAL.
os migrate plan's "nothing is written" on the same file;
a deployment that opted out with OS_DATABASE_SQLITE_JOURNAL_MODE=delete in the server's shell but not in the project .env, which the arm would not read.
MCP search_issues on objectstack-ai/objectstack, closed included: plan writes nothing but first connect converts rollback journal SQLite file to WAL header changes nothing in the database was changed. It returned 2 hits:
Dedupe words: plan writes nothing journal conversion rollback journal; nothing in the database was changed header moved; first connect converts WAL runtime string.
Read fresh. The ownership ceremony's plan arm prints "The plan below writes nothing" and "nothing in the database was changed". But on a rollback-journal SQLite file, its first connect converts the file to WAL: the header bytes and the change counter move. This was measured 2 of 2. Nothing was lost.
Read os migrate plan's "nothing is written", and the shell-only OS_DATABASE_SQLITE_JOURNAL_MODE case, at claim. Fold them in if they hold the same false sentence.

Order, read at this act:
packages/cli/src/commands/migrate/plan.ts: the occupancy warning's "nothing is written" (:134), per triage's fold-in, only if the read shows the same conversion.
Conditional, under the four-condition adjacent-defect rule (same defect class, mechanical, unclaimed, same gate family): the sibling read-only arms' "The dry run below writes nothing" / "The preview below writes nothing". These are in audit-metadata-bodies.ts:118, comment-reactions.ts:139, files-to-references.ts:195, meta.ts:1442, multi-value-columns.ts:397, security-catalog-overlays.ts:198 and summary-nulls.ts:159. Each one is folded in only when its boot is shown to open the same file the same way; otherwise it is an Acceptance note.
The pins beside each changed command, and one .changeset/23562-*.md.
not the apply arm or the occupancy probe.

"summary": "The ceremony's plan arm and os migrate plan, plus six sibling read-only arms, no longer say they write nothing. Each now claims no row or table, followed by one shared note: JOURNAL_MODE_SWITCH_NOTE, exported beside describeOccupancy in utils/sqlite-occupancy.ts. The note reads: 'Opening a SQLite file can still switch its journal mode (to WAL by default), which changes its header only.' The ceremony's closing line carries the note only on a SQLite target. The premise was measured with the real CLI at 9474bc6 on a rollback-journal file held idle by another process. The ceremony plan, os migrate plan and summary-nulls dry run each moved header bytes 18,19 from 1,1 to 2,2 (change counter 2 to 3) and no row. (b) readOnlyProbe acts only on an absent file, so plan.ts:134 is folded in. (e) The driver reads OS_DATABASE_SQLITE_JOURNAL_MODE from the arm's own process env, which includes the project .env. Measured: with =delete in the arm's shell, a WAL file was switched to a rollback journal (2,2 to 1,1). So the note names 'journal mode', not only WAL. security-catalog-overlays.ts:198 is NOT folded in: PR #23469 holds that file, and the role file's condition 3 is file-level (see open_questions). The driver is untouched. Changeset: @objectstack/cli patch, with FROM and TO for every sentence; the ceremony warning's FROM is marked unpublished. Cleanup: node_modules and the worktree are removed, and my private ref is deleted.",

Leg 1 put back the old closing line: blob fa72f5c40052 to b853ff316a93; the new pin went RED, receiving 'Plan written to .../plan.json — nothing in the database was changed.', and its header assertion passed first. Leg 2 put back the old busy warning: blob to 9996f6490f4f; the occupancy plan case went RED on 'The plan below writes no row or table'. Each leg: 1 failed, 5 passed. Restore, both legs: blob equals HEAD fa72f5c40052 and git diff HEAD is empty, proven by the tool and by the script's own EXIT/INT/TERM trap. The direction was red, as expected.",

The declared value outranks the env, so current === target and nothing is written. The driver's rule is unchanged.",
"options": [
"A: keep the text (this PR); the switch is a header change with no data, and cli.mdx documents it",
"B: build it. It needs a createStandaloneStack option plus the bootSchemaStack and telemetry plumbing, a byte-identity pin on a rollback fixture in the one-shot family, and the ruling that kept 'one rule for every connect, read-only boots included' revisited. About half a day across packages/runtime and packages/cli. The cost: a rollback file stays where the occupancy SQL probe is blind (the fd probe still sees a holder)."
],
"recommendation": "A. Real need: the measured harm is one header write and no data. Long-term: B adds a second journal-mode path to every read-only connect. AI error surface: neutral either way. Startup focus: no new option surface without a named operator asking for it."

(2) multi-value-columns.ts:334, the help description: '... and writes nothing.' now reads '... and writes no row or table.' The changeset gains a FROM and TO line for it, and its note sentence now says 'each warning' because the help text carries no note. No test asserted the old description (git grep: the source line only). (3) One-phrase 'no row' edits to the developer comments: organization-ownership.ts header :75, files-to-references.ts:98 and :191, plan.ts:55 and :143, audit-metadata-bodies.ts:57, summary-nulls.ts:54, meta.ts:1489. "premise_still_valid": true,
"summary": "The ceremony's plan arm and os migrate plan, plus six sibling read-only arms, no longer say they write nothing. Cleanup: node_modules and the worktree are removed, and my private ref is deleted.",
"tests": "On the final head 86ce110: vitest by path over organization-ownership.journal-mode.integration.test.ts, organization-ownership.occupancy.integration.test.ts and utils/sqlite-occupancy.test.ts: Test Files 3 passed (3), Tests 21 passed (21), VERDICT command-exit 0. The new real-boot case took 5442 ms on a shared box. The CLI unit layer (vitest --project unit --maxWorkers=2): Test Files 290 passed (290), Tests 4324 passed (4324), VERDICT command-exit 0. The integration layer is declared to CI, except the two files run by path. cli build and typecheck: exit 0. tsc --listFiles puts both touched test files in the 1564-file program. Ablation at 6a65958 through scripts/ablation-replace.mjs (no rebuild: the subject is the CLI's own src, resolved through relative imports).

The role file reads condition 3 file-level ('the file has no other claim'). The dispatch and the claim read it line-level, and PR #23469 (open, draft) edits this file at :290. I followed the role file and left it out.",
"options": [
"A: leave it; once PR #23469 lands, a one-line edit using the exported JOURNAL_MODE_SWITCH_NOTE (a patch round on this card or a sibling card)",
"B: the seat rules line-level holds here, and a patch round on this PR adds it now (the hunks do not touch: :198 and the import line against #23469's :290)"
],
"recommendation": "A, because the role file wins a conflict and the cost of waiting is one unchanged warning on one arm. B is cheap if the seat prefers the family closed in one PR."
},
{
"question": "The unreleased .changeset/23400-ownership-occupancy-gate.md (PR #23548) says 'The plan (no
--apply) writes nothing, so it still runs.' It will publish into the next CHANGELOG with the same false claim. It is outside this claim's file surface, so it was not edited.","options": [
"A: authorize a patch round on PR #23608 to change that one sentence to 'writes no row or table' before the release",
"B: a separate docs-only PR before the release"
],
"recommendation": "A, because the same release carries both entries, and one sentence in an input that is not yet published is the cheapest place to be true."
},
{
"question": "(d) Could a read-only boot keep the file's journal mode instead of saying it may switch? Read only, not built: before the boot, read header byte 18 (1 = rollback, 2 = WAL), then on readOnlyProbe boots declare the driver's existing sqliteJournalMode for the primary and the telemetry sibling. The declared value outranks the env, so current === target and nothing is written. The driver's rule is unchanged.",
"options": [
],
"recommendation": "A. Real need: the measured harm is one header write and no data. Long-term: B adds a second journal-mode path to every read-only connect. AI error surface: neutral either way. Startup focus: no new option surface without a named operator asking for it."
}

(1) .changeset/23400-ownership-occupancy-gate.md:15: 'writes nothing, so it still runs' now reads 'writes no row or table, so it still runs'. The file is byte-identical to its HEAD copy apart from that one replacement (3143 to 3151 bytes). Left as true: plan.ts:65 and the header's 'no database file brought into existence'. organization-ownership.ts:25-29 and :579 are untouched. (4) Read only: recorded-by.ts:158 and resume.ts:172 reach the same SqlDriver connect, so on a rollback-journal SQLite file both are the same false sentence; the evidence is in the PR body's Acceptance notes. The PR body now has a 'Patch round 1' section and new Acceptance notes; lines 1 and 2 are kept.",

All 64 ran. 61 exited 0. check:dual-build-cjs-loads and check:i18n-coverage first exited 3 (missing dist in the fresh worktree), then re-ran after the later gates had built it and exited 0. --ran printed '64 derived, 64 run, 0 NOT-MEASURED, 0 UNRUN'. ONE RED, by design: node scripts/check-empty-changeset.mjs --base origin/main exits 1, 'This PR changes a changeset it did not add: .changeset/23400-ownership-occupancy-gate.md'. CI's 'Check Changeset' on cc57860 failed with the same annotation. This is the gate's DELIBERATE CORRECTION class. Its remedy is to say so on the PR and get it confirmed; the PR body says so and cites the seat's Q2 ruling 6184246424. No skip-changeset label was applied; staying red until a person decides is the gate's own design. Other CI check-runs on cc57860 at report time: Lint & Repo Gates success, TypeScript Type Check success, Test Core success (6/6 shards), Build Core success, Governed Surface Queue Guard success. Check Changeset failure, plus one re-run in_progress after the body edit, along with the single-writer, part-of and claim checks. merge-tree against origin/main fc1a55a is clean (exit 0, tree 84fc586f90), so nothing was merged.",
