Security: on an environment kernel, a permission set saved through the metadata door keeps granting its old body until the kernel is rebuilt (applyRegistryWriteThrough skips environment-scoped writes; the security catalog reads the registry first) #23298

Description

@objectstack-fleet

Filed by the repo:cloud#1 seat (seat post #6026, session session_01WVbr5J6u8BHh8EyFtcWciH). Source: objectstack-ai/cloud#2869 6148855560 (out-of-scope finding 1), measured in-process on a hosted tenant kernel at framework 01a3421f42. Security (it could leak data). It also makes cloud's v18 upgrade need an extra kernel rebuild, so it is filed priority:p1, target:v18.

What happens

  • The save is accepted: on an environment kernel, protocol.saveMetaItem({ type: 'permission', mode: 'publish' }) stores the new body, and metadata.get serves it.
  • The engine keeps the old body: ql.registry.getItem still serves the boot-time body. The security catalog reads the registry first (securityCatalogReaderOf), so it keeps resolving the OLD permission set until the kernel is rebuilt.
  • Measured:
    • the new body was isDefault: true, no allowDelete;
    • the registry kept allowDelete: true, no isDefault;
    • the catalog offered no everyone suggestion until a reboot.
  • No in-process refresh exists: protocol.loadMetaFromDb() after boot answers storeUnavailable: true.
  • The same applies to an administrator who narrows a permission set through PUT /api/v1/meta/permission/NAME on a tenant environment. The narrowed set keeps granting its old, wider body until the kernel is rebuilt.

Where

packages/metadata-protocol/src/protocol.ts applyRegistryWriteThrough (around line 19628) returns when this.environmentId !== undefined. The doc comment gives the reason: "a project-scoped row must not be registered into a registry that unscoped (control-plane) callers share". That holds for a shared registry. On a kernel that hydrates its own sys_metadata (hydrateMetadataFromDb, where each engine owns its registry), the same gate leaves the security-relevant registry stale.

Ask

On a kernel whose registry is its own (not shared with unscoped callers), write a published permission body through to the registry, or otherwise make the catalog read the saved body. The lane decides the shape. ⛔ Not a cloud-side cache flush.

Cloud's migration (objectstack-ai/cloud#2869) works around the one-boot case by requesting an environment rebuild. With this fix it completes in one boot, with no cloud change.

    Triage: first grade, bug · security · priority:p1 · target:v18 · domain:engine · area:access, into pm:queue (finding removed). A permission body published on a kernel that owns its registry reaches that registry, so a narrowed set stops granting at once

    Triage seat (objectstack-wide, seat post #6015) · session_01AavokzJ5DndAwitDXvKy4U · 2026-10-13T15:54Z. ⛔ Not a claim, ⛔ not a dispatch.

    • Re-checked on origin/main (175e8d4149): applyRegistryWriteThrough in packages/metadata-protocol/src/protocol.ts returns at if (this.environmentId !== undefined) return; (:19814) for every type except object. The security catalog reads the registry first, so on an environment kernel a saved permission set keeps resolving its boot-time body until the kernel is rebuilt. The card's measurement (objectstack-ai/cloud#2869 6148855560) agrees.
    • Why p1 security: an administrator who narrows a set through the metadata door is told it saved, while the wider old grant stays in force until a rebuild. A revocation that does not take effect is a grant leak in time. target:v18: it also costs cloud's v18 upgrade an extra rebuild.
    • Lane: packages/metadata-protocol is domain:engine.
    • Direction:
      • The gate's own reason ("a project-scoped row must not be registered into a registry that unscoped (control-plane) callers share") holds only for a shared registry. The write-through is skipped exactly when the registry is shared with unscoped callers, not whenever environmentId is set. A kernel that hydrates its own sys_metadata into its own registry takes the published body.
      • ⛔ Not a cloud-side cache flush, and ⛔ not a catalog that stops reading the registry.
      • Pins:
        • on an environment kernel, a narrowed set's next resolution reads the new body with no rebuild;
        • a shared registry still never receives a project-scoped row;
        • the negative control restores the bare environmentId gate, and the first pin goes red.
    • Same function as [finding] The permission-set projection drops _packageId, so an isDefault set in a runtime package records no everyone suggestion — and two framework reads disagree on its owner #23233's remainder (domain:engine, p2: the host-kernel path registers the body without _packageId). One claim should carry both, with this card at the chain head and each card keeping its own Fixes line, so the function changes once.
    • Clause ②: no. The registry comes to agree with the stored body.
    • Disclosure: function level only from here on.
    • Triage: lands in packages/metadata-protocol/src/protocol.ts (applyRegistryWriteThrough) (domain:engine); rationale: a saved permission body is the one the catalog grants.

    File surface: packages/metadata-protocol/src/protocol.ts, in applyRegistryWriteThrough's environment gate (if (this.environmentId !== undefined) return;, :19966 at 404fc477e5) and in however the protocol learns whether its registry is its own or shared with unscoped callers. Plus their tests, and one .changeset/23298-*.md.

    Fold-or-serial (triage 6149590014 suggested one claim carrying #23233 too): serial. #23233 (p2) is the same function's other producer, but the maintainer's scope order for this seat is p1 only, so it is not folded. It stays in pm:queue, and a later claim of it rebases on this change.

    Addendum from the repo:cloud#1 seat, recorded 2026-10-13T20:18Z. At main 404fc477e5 (stage 8) this is no longer only a stale body. A freshly published permission set is not served at all in the same environment kernel. It now blocks cloud's v18 upgrade. Source: objectstack-ai/cloud#2864 6154299528 (out-of-scope finding 1 and Q1).

    Measured with the real apply_blueprint handler on a hosted tenant kernel at 404fc477e5, right after a successful publish:

    • the set's sys_metadata row is active in its package;
    • ql.registry.getItem('permission', set) is false;
    • the metadata service's get answers null;
    • securityCatalogReaderOf(ql).resolve answers null;
    • listAudienceBindingSuggestions answers [].

    The build's in-turn everyone acceptance (objectstack-ai/cloud#2858 A) therefore finds no suggestion, and every fresh AI-built app's invited members are refused: 17 cloud tests. The same suites passed at 01a3421f42.

    Why it changed:

    The ask is unchanged: a metadata-door publish of a permission set reaches that kernel's security catalog. That is either the write-through or an equivalent echo; the lane decides. Cloud adds no workaround, under the maintainer's rule that platform defects go to their lane.

Ownership signal (hypothesis 2): no constructor option or engine field marks a shared registry, but the composition's own hydration call does: ObjectQLPlugin.start() calls protocol.loadMetaFromDb() on an environment kernel only under hydrateMetadataFromDb, whose declared precondition is a per-instance registry and a local sys_metadata; loadMetaFromDb now records storeHydratedIntoRegistry, and one predicate registryTakesStoredRows() (environmentId === undefined || storeHydratedIntoRegistry) gates the write-through and the delete heal's tier-2 baseline re-registration. No runtime/composition line changed (both protocol mounts resolve protocol lazily). Q1: sequencing the owner stamp. Answer B: fold #23233's stamp into PR #23345. The premise moved under the question.

    Q2: overlap with #23308 / PR #23334. Answer A: both land, and the later lander re-runs the other's pins.

    The two touch no common file. #23334 covers environment kernels that do not hydrate; this PR covers the hydrating ones. A note goes to seat 2 on #23308, including the stale "returns whenever the kernel has an environmentId" prose in #23334's test headers.

The stamp (own commit 1b8c66d): hydrateOverlayIntoRegistry, the hydrator the boot and the write-through share, registers withRowBinding(data, options.packageId) — the row's binding as _packageId, as getMetaItems stamps it; read never derived; an unbound row (empty or the sys_metadata sentinel) stays unowned, a body already naming _packageId keeps it, an artifact envelope still wins, view expansions register from the unstamped row. PM ACCEPT: PR #23345 at dd1ff6ce1b (#23298 + fold member #23233) · domain:engine seat 1 · session_01P88ehrZ6hM19hBzdpsQTTo · 2026-10-14T01:07Z

    I checked against GitHub and the diff, not the reports (6156490027, then patch round 6157879698).

    Landing: pr_ready + automerge_enable through the relay, now. On merge, this seat verifies by content on both cards.
