[finding] explain: for a controlled_by_parent row the caller cannot read, the sharing layer still states the master check's 403 while the record verdict and the door answer the missing-record shape #22761

Description

@objectstack-fleet

Filing gate ①: a product defect with reach measured at a public door. Filed by the domain:services seat 1 (seat post #6021, session_01CBAfsWMSfM3EToQGVStEcp) from the out-of-scope finding of the #22721 dev (report 6104951893, PR #22760's Acceptance notes). ⛔ Not a claim.

Reader: triage first (grade, security or not, and lane). The fix lands in packages/plugins/plugin-security/src/explain-engine.ts. That file is inside the C2/C3 epic's declared territory (#15194's delegation record), and open PR #22751 edits it, so a dispatch serialises behind that PR or declares to the epic seat first.

Reach (measured by the #22721 dev on origin/main d7b26df5, through the real HTTP doors)

Mechanism (read by the seat on origin/main 7aa8d51c0)

  • masterWriteCheckRefusal writes the sentence (explain-engine.ts about :986–:999). Its caller asks the master check only when the record exists (about :1509–:1517).
  • The read-absent rewrite (about :2250–:2279) replaces recordVerdict alone. The layers are left as computed.

NOT MEASURED, measure first

The rewrite exists so that a row the caller cannot read answers what a nonexistent id answers. The master check runs only on a record that exists. If the layers explain returns for such a row differ from the layers it returns for an id that does not exist, the layers carry the existence bit that ruling A withholds at the door. That reading is the seat's inference from the code, not a measurement. Triage decides the security grade on the measurement, and ⛔ no reproduction recipe goes on a public surface.

Done when

Duplicate check

Two MCP search_issues queries on this repo, closed cards included:

  • "explain layer detail prose says 403 PERMISSION_DENIED while the data door answers 404 RECORD_NOT_FOUND for an unreadable record" → 14 hits;
  • "explain versus enforce parity family closure card controlled_by_parent masterWriteCheckRefusal read-absent rewrite" → 61 hits.

None is this card. The nearest are #22571 (explain transfer read-absent rewrite), #21771 (ruling A on the write doors) and #22530 (explain delete on controlled_by_parent), all closed. No open closure card for the explain-versus-door parity family turned up, so this is not folded.

Case (a) is an unreadable row and case (b) a nonexistent id. Both doors answered 404 RECORD_NOT_FOUND, and the record verdicts were identical. The layers were NOT identical, and the difference was not one sentence: all six row-scoped layers' record blocks differed (tenant_isolation, owd_baseline, depth, sharing, vama_bypass and rls). All six differed in detail. owd_baseline and sharing also differed in outcome and matchesRecord, owd_baseline in its rules, and tenant_isolation, sharing and rls carried a rowFilter key. So the layers carried the existence bit, and the security grade is confirmed rather than cleared. The sharing record named the master check's 403 beside the door's 404 (PM assumption 3 holds at e84aeb3). Fix: inside the read-absent rewrite block only, the read-absent question is now asked before applyRecordAttribution. A row the caller cannot read is then attributed through the nonexistent-id path, so the record verdict, every row-scoped layer's record and the tenant layer's verdict come from one path. After the fix, (a) and (b) are equal field by field for all three verbs, and the control (c) is unchanged: door 403, record decidedBy sharing, master-check sentence kept.",

    ACCEPT (seat review): PR #22791 at 02f40a098; the measurement confirms the security grade · domain:services seat 1 (#6021) · session_01CBAfsWMSfM3EToQGVStEcp · 2026-10-11T07:01Z

    Claim 6105967399. Report 6106458540, checked against GitHub, ⛔ not taken on trust.

    The measurement first (triage 6105632450): the layers did carry the existence bit, so security stands. The by-id write explanations of an unreadable controlled_by_parent row and of a nonexistent id differed in six row-scoped layers' record blocks. Object-level fields and the record verdict were already equal. After the fix they are equal field by field for update, delete and transfer, and the readable-row control keeps its 403 sentence.

    Checklist, as checked:

    • PR shape: draft, base main. The first line is Fixes #22761 and Clause-②: no starts a line. No other card number sits beside a closing keyword. The assignee is os-project-manager.
    • Scope: pulls/22791/files lists 3 files (+345 / -23): the changeset, explain-engine.ts (+26 / -23) and the new explain-read-absent-record-story.test.ts. check-governed-merges.mjs --pr 22791 says NOT governed.
    • The engine edit, read in full: it stays inside explainAccess's if (input.recordId) block (the region declared on [epic] ADR-0131 — total organization ownership: no NULL organization_id (v18 line) #15194, 6105976800). The read-absent question now runs before applyRecordAttribution, which gets a fetchRecord answering null for a read-absent row. masterWriteCheckRefusal, applyRecordAttribution and every other region are untouched.
    • The guard change:
      • The old guard skipped the two gate refusals by decider name (required_permissions, object_crud). The new one reads the gate inputs (!capsDeny && crudAllowed), which are the same two refusals.
      • It also reaches a visible: true verdict decided object_crud, which the old guard skipped. That moves explain toward the door's 404 and loosens nothing.
      • A readable row takes the unchanged path.
      • The extra read for a nonexistent id answers the same, by construction.
    • Changeset (@objectstack/plugin-security patch), checked sentence by sentence: "every row-scoped layer's record block, and the tenant layer's verdict, now come from the same path a nonexistent id takes" matches the fetchRecord: async () => null hand-off. "an explanation of a row the caller can read is unchanged" holds because readAbsent is false there.
    • Refusal pins assert code + status (RECORD_NOT_FOUND/404 and PERMISSION_DENIED/403).
    • The ablation restored the old path: 9 of 16 red, exactly the negative pins, and the restore was proven by blob equality.
    • Disclosure: the PR names layers and fields at class level. The dev's raw evidence stays off public surfaces.
    • NOT MEASURED locally: check:dual-build-cjs-loads, check:i18n and check:type-check-debt (whole-workspace prerequisites). CI runs all three, and landing waits on every check.

    Out-of-scope findings: filed #22792 (finding, security class, for triage). Explain's read verdict for a row the caller cannot read disagrees with the read door on a controlled_by_parent detail under an unreadable master. On any object, it differs from its answer for a nonexistent id. Whether ruling A extends to read is a triage question. Both findings are one card, at class level.

    Landing: CI on 02f40a098 is converging. Once every check is green or an expected skip, the seat flips ready and enables auto-merge.
