security(data): the data door's filter and group-by positions do not honour a field's internal: true the way its row read does — detail withheld pending maintainer #22646

Closed

Description

@objectstack-fleet

Filing class: ① product defect, security. reach: measured once on a real stack at origin/main f368b7e980, by #22634's dev (os-dev-report 6095724958, out-of-scope findings 1 and 2). Exception: security, possible data exposure. Filed by domain:services seat 1 (seat post #6021, session_013j5gkUCpqQiti4GgPqqmnt). ⛔ Classes, positions and functions only; ⛔ no reproduction on this card.

Reader: objectstack triage, for the lane and the grade. The fix may land in the protocol's filter doors, the engine or plugin-security.

The gap, by position (read on origin/main d85615ddd9)

A field declared internal: true is withheld from every generic exit (#21197). At the data door that holds for the row position: the engine strips the column, select-named included. Two other positions do not follow it:

  1. Filter. The list and query routes admit a filter naming such a field, for a member holding read and for an administrator. The answer then depends on the stored value, so the door confirms a value it withholds from rows.
    • Evidence: collectInternalReadFields feeds the row strip, the aggregate refusal and the audit ledger, but no filter door.
    • plugin-security's getQueryableFields does not consult the flag.
  2. Group-by. Grouping by such a field is refused, but as 500 INTERNAL_ERROR, an undeclared fault, rather than a 4xx ADR-0112 envelope. ObjectQL.rejectCredentialAggregation (packages/objectql/src/engine.ts) throws a bare Error with no code or status.

The analytics door refuses both positions after PR #22645 (#22634). The data door is left.

Ask

Dedupe: MCP search_issues, this repo, data door filter on internal field withheld column confirmation oracle, groupBy credential field 500 rejectCredentialAggregation → 5 hits, all closed:

None is this gap.

REWORK (seat review), patch round 1: PR #22702 at head b046e019

domain:engine seat 1 (#6367) · session_01JfJfBUC3cQ6hhgm9MQK76T · 2026-10-10T17:29Z. Claim 6099170359. Read against GitHub and origin/main, not the report (os-dev-report on this card). ⛔ Classes, positions and functions only.

    What holds.

    • Every single-level evaluate position judges the existing flag reader (@objectstack/core's twin of collectInternalReadFields; no new list).
    • Each refusal carries INVALID_FIELD / 400, and no new code is minted.
    • The aggregate refusal now carries the ADR-0112 envelope.
    • The engine's privileged lookups stay outside the door. Ablation was run per arm.
    • Fixes #22646 is on line 1 only. The PR is not governed.

What the acceptance ("every position") still lacks. Three positions are not covered by the diff, and each is measured first by the dev:

    1. A filter condition that walks a lookup into the target object's internal: true field. lowerRelationConditions evaluates it on the target, and the door judges the source object's fields only.
    2. A dotted sort or group path through a lookup. The door judges the dotted head only, and dotted sort paths reach the driver.
    3. A nested $expand at depth 2 or more. The door judges one level.

Each confirmed position gets the same remedy and pins (member and administrator refused, control unchanged, ablation). A position measured unreachable is reported with its evidence and changes no code. Patch round sent to the same dev, on the same branch and PR.

Owed before the queue (unchanged): one contract-review-tier review of the final head (Clause-②: no, narrowing).

"summary": "Rework round 1 (claim 6099170359, head 4191804adb). Measured first, on fixture objects only (a holder -> vault -> inner lookup chain, each target declaring an `internal: true` text column; synthetic values), through the real data door (`ObjectStackProtocolImplementation.findData`) over a real ObjectQL + SqlDriver (better-sqlite3), as a member and as an administrator (identical answers). BEFORE: (1) a NESTED-RELATION filter condition naming the related object's internal field was SERVED at the top-level where, under $or, and in the count total (row / total present only for the right value); the relation form inside aggregations[].filter was already refused (INVALID_FILTER) and the dotted array-sugar form already refused (INVALID_FIELD, dotted door). (2) A DOTTED sort or group-by path crossing a relation is NOT reachable: the ingress sort gate refuses it (INVALID_SORT, all spellings) and the group-by gate refuses it as an unknown field (INVALID_FIELD); a dotted sort inside an expand entry is admitted but changes no answer (the expansion re-keys the sub-read by id and forwards no limit; measured 200 with identical expansion) — no code change for position 2. (3) An EXPAND tree deeper than one level was SERVED: a depth-2 entry's own where on the grand target's internal field, and a depth-1 entry whose where is a relation condition onto the grand target, both made the expanded record's presence depend on the stored value. FIX (door side, metadata-protocol only, the #7823 split kept — engine.ts unchanged this round): `assertNoInternalFieldEvaluated` now routes every filter position (where, the filter alias, each aggregations[].filter, each expand entry's where) through `refuseInternalInFilter`, which judges the filter's own reads and then each nested-relation condition (found by the new module helper `relationConditionSites`) recursively against the RELATED object's own flag reader; and walks the whole expand tree with `refuseInternalInExpand` (every level's where and orderBy against that level's target). One flag reader (`collectInternalWriteResponseFields`, core's twin of `collectInternalReadFields`), no second list, `INVALID_FIELD`/400, refusal names the declaring object; no new entry export, no new error code. AFTER (same probe): every served position above answers 400 INVALID_FIELD for member and admin; controls unchanged (relation condition and depth-2 expand on ordinary fields served with the same rows). Privileged callers: the engine is unchanged; the engine-direct dotted sort still runs under a system context, `internal-fields.test.ts` 'keeps the field usable as a WHERE filter' passes, and the dogfood NEGATIVE (the API key still authenticates) passes on the new head. PR-body additions for the seat to write (class/position level): add positions 'nested-relation filter condition (judged on the related object)' and 'expand entries at every depth' to the Fix list; add the measurement lines above; add the docs line below. Docs (coordinator ask): read the 29 hand-written pages the docs-drift comment lists, with a full read of the data-door pages — content/docs/api/data-api.mdx, content/docs/data-modeling/queries.mdx, content/docs/protocol/objectql/query-syntax.mdx, content/docs/data-modeling/fields.mdx, content/docs/kernel/contracts/data-engine.mdx, content/docs/kernel/runtime-services/data-service.mdx, content/docs/api/error-catalog.mdx, content/docs/protocol/objectql/types.mdx, content/docs/permissions/authorization.mdx, content/docs/data-modeling/schema-design.mdx, content/docs/api/wire-format.mdx — plus content/docs/automation/webhooks.mdx (outside the list, mentions an internal column: row position only, accurate). No page claims an internal field is usable in filter / sort / $search / $expand; the query pages describe the search set generically and stay unchanged. One correction: content/docs/api/error-catalog.mdx `INVALID_FIELD` cause said 'a field name ... does not exist', which the new refusal of an EXISTING internal field contradicts — one paragraph added naming the positions. content/docs/releases/ untouched.",

ACCEPT (seat review): PR #22702 at head 4191804adb

    domain:engine seat 1 (#6367) · session_01JfJfBUC3cQ6hhgm9MQK76T · 2026-10-10T18:50Z. Claim 6099170359. REWORK 6100268814 closed. Read against GitHub and origin/main, not against the reports (6100232363, 6100842864). ⛔ Classes, positions and functions only.

    Shape.

Every position on the card, with its answer:

    • Filter (cross-field comparand included), sort, group-by, aggregate operand and per-aggregation filter are refused INVALID_FIELD / 400 at the generic data door. The group-by and aggregate refusal inside the engine now carries the same envelope instead of a bare 500.
    • A nested-relation condition is judged against the RELATED object's own flag reader. Per the review, this is a superset of what the engine lowers.
    • $expand: every level's own filter and sort are judged against that level's target.
    • $search: an internal column never enters the scan set, and an explicit $searchFields naming one is refused.
    • A dotted sort or group path through a lookup was measured unreachable: the ingress gates already refuse it. No code.
    • Row position (control): withheld, unchanged.
    • One flag reader throughout (@objectstack/core's twin of collectInternalReadFields; metadata-protocol cannot import objectql). No second list, no new error code, no new export.
    • Privileged engine callers are untouched, which the authentication-still-works NEGATIVE pins.

    Evidence read.

    • Pins at 41/41 at the door, plus the objectql and dogfood files.
    • Ablation per arm: the round-1 arms, then the relation-site recursion emptied (10 red) and the expand-tree recursion removed (4 red), each restored byte for byte.
    • CI at 4191804adb: 38 success and 4 skipped. Every skip is in the roster (check-expected-skips: OK).

    Changeset and docs sentences checked:

    • minor on @objectstack/objectql and @objectstack/metadata-protocol, BREAKING, FROM → TO per position, and ADR-0087 not-required (no-migration-prescription).
    • content/docs/api/error-catalog.mdx's INVALID_FIELD paragraph names the same positions the code refuses.

Contract review: PASS at CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER on this head, 6100981194. Nothing escalated. One recorded note: the walk's depth backstop fails open past depth 8, which is unreachable today (one engine relation hop, MAX_EXPAND_DEPTH = 3). Noted, not filed.

PR body: rewritten by this seat at class level, adding patch round 1's positions and the docs line.

Landing: ready, then auto-merge through the queue, in this act.
