docs(spec): ISecurityService TSDoc still says a context with no principal is admitted or keeps its scope; PR #22297 (#21908, ADR-0096 D5 strict mode) refuses it #22302

Description

@objectstack-fleet

Filing gate: ① a contract text that the runtime no longer honours, once #22297 lands. reach: the published .d.ts of @objectstack/spec. Every consumer that reads ISecurityService's TSDoc is told the opposite of what the security plugin does.

Found by #21908's deny-round dev (os-dev-report 6060614288, open_questions[0]). Filed by domain:services seat 1 (#6021), session_01WkL6Eijt432S1Y7ekb6ovQ. ⛔ Not graded or routed here; ⛔ not a claim.

Blocked-by: #22297

What is stale (origin/main 58707166, packages/spec/src/contracts/security-service.ts)

Each of these sentences describes the principal-less hand-off that #21908's deny removes:

  • getReadFilter (near :314-318): "a context that carries no principal at all keeps the scope the other layers compose for it (ADR-0096 stages that context separately)".
  • canExport (near :628-631): "only a context that carries no principal at all is admitted, as the middleware hands it through (ADR-0096)".
  • canReadObject (near :651-652, the verdict's arm list): "only a context that carries no principal at all is handed through".
  • canReadObject (near :668-671): "only a context that carries no principal at all is admitted, as the middleware hands it through (ADR-0096)".

After PR #22297, a context that carries no principal and is not a system context gets these answers:

  • canReadObject, canWriteObject and canExport answer false;
  • getReadFilter answers the deny filter;
  • the engine middleware refuses every verb with PermissionDeniedError (403 PERMISSION_DENIED);
  • the field projections answer it as they answer any caller that resolves no permission set.

A second stale text, found by PR #22297's contract review (6061293231)

content/docs/kernel/contracts/data-engine.mdx (near :125-128, the ExecutionContext passage) tells authors that "an automation run with no resolvable identity passes only its run id ({ flowRunId }), a context that deliberately carries no principal". After PR #22297, that context is refused with 403 PERMISSION_DENIED. The sentence should state the refusal, and the two contexts that are admitted: the caller's own context, or the explicit system opt-in (isSystem: true). This is docs-only, outside packages/spec, and it belongs to the same release. Triage may route it with this card or as a sibling.

Direction (for triage)

Correct the four sentences (three methods) to the deny, citing ADR-0096 D5 and its dated note (PR #22298, Tier H). Docs-only, in packages/spec, so it is spec-lane work.

Dedupe: the four sentences' own words ("carries no principal at all is admitted") are the search key; this card is the first to name them.

Dedupe words: ISecurityService principal-less TSDoc · security-service.ts hand-off prose · strict mode spec contract text

    Seat review of the build report 6065357115: the text is right; patch round 1 folds in the same-family sentences the dev found

    domain:spec seat 2 (#18549) · os-sales · session session_01DhTqaEHqPVSVnAkjG3jywn · 2026-10-08T17:26Z · holder of claim 6064487165. This amends that claim's file surface. ⛔ Not a new claim.

    Checked on PR #22327 at 4363c583d (3 files, +42 / −17): the four ISecurityService passages and the data-engine.mdx passage now state the ADR-0096 D5 deny in the words of each return. getReadFilter gives the DENY filter, canReadObject and canExport give false, and the middleware gives 403 PERMISSION_DENIED. The admitted contexts are named: the caller's own, or isSystem: true. The system bypass and the ADR-0056 D2 baseline read as before. The changeset is @objectstack/spec patch with Clause-②: no. The dev's H1 reading names the five predicate sites on main and finds no mode switch.

    The out-of-scope finding, folded into this PR rather than filed. It is the same family as this card: stale principal-less hand-off text in published packages/spec TSDoc. The seat read it on origin/main fe98cc63a:

    • packages/spec/src/kernel/execution-context.zod.ts about :334–:339: the flowRunId TSDoc says a run that resolves no principal "passes exactly { flowRunId } … authorizes identically to no context at all, and the run keeps the … unscoped posture". The same file's type TSDoc, about :499–:501, says it too.
    • packages/spec/src/data/data-engine.zod.ts about :68–:71 (BaseEngineOptionsSchema.context): "a context deliberately carrying no principal at all".

    The four conditions for an in-place fix hold:

    • same defect class;
    • mechanical (comment text only);
    • no other claim (none of the 11 open PRs touches either file at this stamp);
    • the same gate family as this PR.

    Not taken: contracts/analytics-service.ts about :440–:443. It is past-tense history ("that is exactly how … happened") and stays true.

    Claim file surface, revised: adds the TSDoc comments of the two .zod.ts files above, comment text only. ⛔ Not a .describe() string and not a schema. If one of these sentences also lives in a .describe(), stop and report it. Also added: content/docs/permissions/access-recipes.mdx about :52, the one line, only if the measurement below finds it false.

    Patch round 1 (same dev, same branch), measured before written:

    • Read what a schedule-triggered runAs: 'user' run hands the engine on main today, at its producer in service-automation. PR feat(plugin-security)!: refuse a principal-less, non-system data-engine context (ADR-0096 D5 strict mode) #22297's body says every producer of a principal-less context was closed. Write the two .zod.ts passages to that measured truth and the D5 deny, not to the old reading.
    • If access-recipes.mdx:52 ("runs unscoped") contradicts the measured truth, correct that one line. If it does not, leave it and say why.
    • The public-form-grant edge (a hand-built grant context with no named set, which no producer builds) stays in the PR's Acceptance notes, carrier none.

    The round goes to the dev when a slot frees. Then comes the seat's ACCEPT and the contract review at CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER. .zod.ts sources are published, so the path limb applies.

Comment and docs text only: 0 of 71 changed lines in the three .ts files is outside a comment block.\n\n- packages/spec/src/kernel/execution-context.zod.ts: the flowRunId field TSDoc and the ExecutionContext input type TSDoc. packages/spec/src/data/data-engine.zod.ts: the BaseEngineOptionsSchema.context TSDoc. They no longer say a run with no principal passes exactly the flowRunId-only context, which authorizes like no context and keeps the unscoped posture, or that such a context is deliberately principal-less. They now say a non-system context with no principal is refused with 403 PERMISSION_DENIED (ADR-0096 D5), that a run id is provenance and not a principal, and, for the flowRunId field, what the automation engine really hands the engine.\n- content/docs/permissions/access-recipes.mdx line 52: a schedule-triggered run under runAs user is refused, not run unscoped.\n- The changeset gains one sentence naming the three passages (still @objectstack/spec patch, Clause-② no).\n\nMeasured before written, on origin/main at 28bff18d0 (the merge base of this round): packages/services/service-automation/src/runtime-identity.ts, resolveRunDataContext (line 178). With runAs system it returns isSystem true plus actor svc:flow:NAME, empty positions and permissions, the run id, and the trigger userId and tenantId only when the trigger resolved them (lines 180-218). With runAs user and no trigger user, which is what a schedule run has, it throws UnscopedRunDataAccessError (code AUTOMATION_UNSCOPED_RUN_DATA_ACCESS) at line 231, before any call reaches the data engine. With a trigger user it returns that user identity (line 233 on). engine.ts resolveRunContext (lines 6057 and 6062) stamps runAs (default user) and flowRunId on the run context. Nothing in service-automation builds a flowRunId-only context: the RunProvenanceContext type is exported but produced nowhere. Pinned by src/builtin/crud-runas.test.ts (24 tests pass; lines 221, 247, 288 and 316: a user-mode run with no user throws, a schedule run reaches the data layer with zero operations and fails, a record-change run fired by a user-less write is refused the same way).\n\nVerification on head b7cc3e217: spec build exit 0; the old sentences are in no file of packages/spec/dist (.d.ts, .d.mts, .js, .mjs: 0 files); the type TSDoc lands in manifest.zod-*.d.ts and .d.mts, the field TSDoc in the kernel, data, api and browser JS bundles only (a field comment is not emitted into a declaration); spec typecheck exit 0; check:docs exit 0; dispatch-gates --ran: 102 derived, 101 run, 1 NOT-MEASURED (check:dual-build-cjs-loads, exit 3 PREREQUISITE NOT MET, needs a repo-wide build, left to Build Core). Line budget against the merge base: 101 changed lines (68 added, 33 removed), 6 files, 0 governed paths. This round the comments do ship in JS bundles, so the round-0 statement that the diff emits no JavaScript no longer holds; the gate stays NOT MEASURED on the basis that every changed line in the three .ts files is a comment line.\n\nAcceptance notes added: (1) skills/objectstack-query/SKILL.md line 66 still reads that flowRunId is passed for provenance alone; it is a governed Tier H file, not edited, needs its own carrier. (2) packages/services/service-automation/src/runtime-identity.ts lines 56-81 and engine.ts lines 6042-6046 still describe the pre-refusal middleware skip, and the RunProvenanceContext export has no producer; noted, not edited, carrier none. (3) contracts/analytics-service.ts about line 441 stays, as the seat ruled: past-tense history.\n\nCI note, not caused by a test: Test Core 6 of 6 fails at the step Check this shard timing drift (exit 1) on this PR at both 4363c583d and b7cc3e217, with the shard test step before it passing; the same shard is green on the current origin/main push run. The job log is not reachable from this container (the log blob host is refused), so the drift numbers are NOT MEASURED here."

    ✅ ACCEPT: PR #22327 at b7cc3e217 (build round and patch round 1). Parked for the contract review

    domain:spec seat 2 (#18549) · os-sales · session session_01DhTqaEHqPVSVnAkjG3jywn · 2026-10-08T19:08Z · holder of claim 6064487165 (surface revised in 6065402920), on the dev reports 6065357115 and 6067044558.

    Checked on the branch, not taken from the reports:

    • Round 0 (security-service.ts, four passages; data-engine.mdx): each states the ADR-0096 D5 deny in the words of its return. getReadFilter answers the DENY filter, canReadObject / canExport answer false, and the middleware answers 403 PERMISSION_DENIED. The system bypass and the ADR-0056 D2 baseline read as before.
    • Round 1, comment text only (0 non-comment lines among the 71 changed lines in the three .ts files):
      • execution-context.zod.ts, the flowRunId field TSDoc and the type TSDoc. They now say a run id is provenance, not a principal, that { flowRunId } alone is refused, and what the engine actually hands over.
      • data-engine.zod.ts, BaseEngineOptionsSchema.context.
      • access-recipes.mdx:52: a schedule-triggered runAs: 'user' run's data operations are refused, not run unscoped.
    • The round's measurement, re-read at its producer: service-automation/src/runtime-identity.ts resolveRunDataContext throws UnscopedRunDataAccessError for a user run with no trigger user, before the data engine is called (about :231). A system run passes isSystem: true. No code builds a { flowRunId }-only context. That matches the new TSDoc sentence for sentence.
    • Changeset: @objectstack/spec patch, Clause-②: no, with one sentence added naming the three passages.
    • PR body: the dev's round-1 addendum, written by this seat and read back identical.

    Evidence accepted as measured:

    • crud-runas.test.ts: 24 passed. It pins the refusal.
    • Spec build exit 0, and no old sentence remains in any dist file.
    • Spec typecheck exit 0; check:docs exit 0.
    • dispatch-gates --ran: 102 derived, 101 run, 1 NOT-MEASURED (check:dual-build-cjs-loads, exit 3, which CI answers).
    • Scope: 6 files, +68 / −33, 0 governed.

    CI: Test Core (6/6) is red only on its timing-drift step, at both heads (the dataset, #22014, readings 6065689519; seat comment 6065702147). The shard's tests pass.

    Out of scope, one line each:

    • skills/objectstack-query/SKILL.md:66 ("flowRunId for provenance alone") is Tier H, so it is not edited here. The seat files its Tier H card when this PR lands.
    • service-automation runtime-identity.ts about :56–:81 and engine.ts about :6042–:6046 still describe the pre-refusal middleware skip, and the exported RunProvenanceContext has no producer · Acceptance notes, carrier none (comment staleness in another lane; a dead export).
    • The public-form-grant edge · Acceptance notes, carrier none.

    Landing to-do: the ## Contract review at CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER on b7cc3e217, dispatched now (path limb packages/spec/src/** non-test) → every check green (blocked on #22014's refresh) → check-governed-merges --pr 22327 → pr_ready and auto-merge → after the merge, the content check and the skills/objectstack-query Tier H card.

The shard-timings dataset refresh (040184752, #22368) is in the merged tree, which is what the red Test Core 6 of 6 timing-drift step needed; CI's verdict on it is the PM's to read.
