Description of the feature request

Jetbrains has just released a Java LSP, which means programming Java is better than ever outside the IntelliJ ecosystem. Currently, Minecraft mod developers cannot move elsewhere due to their reliance on this plugin.

I believe a large part of this plugin, especially the Mixin stuff, could be an LSP, which would make it portable to any IDE.

You misunderstand. This would work on all IDEs. Not just IntelliJ.

to rephrase: if you made a completely standalone language server, you wouldn't be able to use the java language analysis provided by intellij, which is relied on by this plugin. additionally, (as far as i can tell) editors like VSCode do not allow using multiple entirely separate language servers for one file, because a language server is intended to implement language support; so you could not have the java LSP apply to a mixin file, and an entirely separate mixin LSP applying mixin-specific fixes.

so, if you want to extend the java analysis, you need the language server to provide its own extension support. as i understand it, eclipse's java language server (the pre-existing commonly used one) does have this kind of support, but redeveloping the plugin to use that would effectively require rewriting the entire thing... and the jetbrains language server does not have that support at all.

since the jetbrains language server is based on intellij's internals, i would expect that, when it does get an extension API, it would reuse the regular intellij APIs and make adapting the plugin feasible. but until then, they cannot be used together

This is false. Editors frequently do use multiple language servers per file.

Therefore, you wouldn't need the two to communicate. Gradle Tooling API to get classpath, and from there its pretty easy to parse a bit of Java / bytecode. You could even include some of Eclipse Core JDT within the Mixin LSP which would work alongside whatever proper Java LSP the user is using.

As of now there is no information on how or if Jetbrains will support IntelliJ plugins in the LSP. We can't do anything on this until we know more.
