Summary

  • Read StarNodes _quantization_metadata from safetensors file metadata.
  • Translate per-layer int8_convrot configuration into the existing INT8 tensorwise loader path.
  • Apply metadata only when the layer has both .weight and .weight_scale tensors.
  • Prefer existing per-layer .comfy_quant metadata when present.

This allows StarNodes INT8 ConvRot checkpoints to load directly, without rewriting the checkpoint or changing weights, scales, or CUDA kernels.

Verification

  • Built the sd-cli target.
  • Loaded the StarNodes checkpoint and generated a 768×1024 image with 25 steps.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for reading StarNodes quantization metadata from safetensors files.
    • Automatically recognizes eligible INT8 tensorwise configurations, including convolution rotation and group-size settings.
    • Preserves existing Comfy quantization configurations when metadata overlaps.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Malformed quantization metadata now produces a clear error.
    • Unsupported INT8 tensorwise convolution-rotation configurations are rejected by applicable upstream builds.

📝 Walkthrough

The safetensors reader now parses optional StarNodes quantization metadata. It imports eligible per-layer configurations, applies layer or global settings, and rejects unsupported configurations in upstream GGML builds.

Changes: StarNodes quantization metadata import

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse and import quantization metadata
src/model_io/safetensors_io.cpp
The reader parses __metadata__._quantization_metadata, skips incomplete or unrelated layer entries, and imports configurations when no .comfy_quant configuration exists. Layer settings override global values. It normalizes int8_convrot to int8_tensorwise, rejects unsupported upstream GGML configurations, and returns an error for malformed metadata.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: leejet

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 58a29

Some StarNodes AIO checkpoints can still miss INT8 configuration loading, and malformed optional metadata can prevent otherwise valid checkpoints from loading. Resolve these issues before merging unless the affected checkpoints are explicitly out of scope.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b0067

Most validation and precedence rules are preserved. However, one supported build option can accept settings it cannot execute, delaying rejection until processing. Broader security impact is not established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · observed: The StarNodes producer imports tensorwise INT8 settings without the unsupported-build rejection applied to .comfy_quant. With SD_USE_UPSTREAM_GGML, imported settings can preserve I8 weights and reach a runtime operation that explicitly throws. This moves a compatibility failure beyond the import boundary; process-wide or service-wide failure is not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated control scope is the checkpoint being loaded and the processing instance consuming it. A checkpoint supplier can select eligible layer execution settings, and a tensorwise flag can influence LoRA policy across that loaded instance. The inspected path does not establish cross-tenant, credential, or administrative authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — For an upstream-GGML build loading an eligible checkpoint, file-controlled metadata can preserve I8 weights and lead to an explicit unsupported-operation exception during graph execution. This supports a delayed-failure concern, not a verified process-termination or remotely reachable denial-of-service finding; the raw-I8 runtime sink already existed.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Checkpoint metadata crosses into execution configuration through explicit eligibility and format checks. Existing per-layer configuration takes precedence, non-I8 configured weights are rejected, and invalid ConvRot groups fail before storage flags are published. The upstream-build capability check is the identified inconsistency between the two configuration producers.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Normal parse failures return before the direct caller adds tensor storage to its catalog, and the higher-level candidate loader discards failed candidates. This limits partial-state propagation without establishing exception containment for later graph execution.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Apply shared capability validation after configuration sources are merged so every producer rejects unsupported execution settings at the same import boundary.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not reject valid per-layer configurations because optional metadata is malformed.

If a checkpoint has valid .comfy_quant tensors and a malformed _quantization_metadata string, this new parse fails before the reader can use the preferred per-layer configurations. The same checkpoint previously reached tensor loading. Ignore an unusable optional layer map when the applicable per-layer configurations are already available, or limit the error to a layer that requires the map. ComfyUI documents .comfy_quant as the per-module configuration. (github.com)

# ⭐ StarNodes Model Converter v1.5.5

## 🆕 New Features

  * **23.9.26 W6A8 Added 24.9.26 Ming image profile. Captains minmax changelog: 26.9 Qwen-Image-2.1 MaxQ & Z-Image MaxQ profiles added
  * **Star Checkpoint Saver (AIO) Saves model+clip+vae as one AIO checkpoint. Works with mixed quantizations (e.g. NVFP4 model + NVFP4 text encoder + BF16 VAE)
  * Star Model Layers Info Node: Added a new dedicated analysis node (`⭐ Star Model Layers Info`) that inspects `.safetensors` and `.gguf` files to report per-layer quantization formats, parameter counts, and tensor sizes. Supports Normal View (flat list) and Tree View (hierarchical grouped view with layer ranges).
  * ConvRot Detection & Display: The Layers Info node now correctly detects and displays ConvRot rotation metadata including group size (e.g., `INT8_CONVROT (GS:256)`) for both per-tensor `.comfy_quant` blobs and legacy global `_quantization_metadata` headers.
  * AIO Prefix Normalization: The Layers Info analyzer now handles the `model.diffusion_model.` prefix mismatch between tensor keys and metadata keys. Metadata stored by the converter strips `AIO_MODEL_PREFIX`, so the analyzer tries stripping `model.diffusion_model.`, `diffusion_model.`, and `model.` (longest-first) plus suffix matching as a last resort.
  * Quantization Profile Export: Added optional `save_profile` toggle to the Layers Info node that exports a layer-by-layer JSON profile compatible with Star Ultimate Model Converter Pro's profile import.
  * AWQ W4A16 Support: Added full AWQ W4A16 quantization target format using comfy-kitchen's `TensorCoreAWQW4A16Layout` with asymmetric scale + zero-point storage and proper ComfyUI loader-compatible tensor naming (`_scale`, `_zero`).
  * W4A8 ConvRot Support: Added W4A8 ConvRot target format using comfy-kitchen's `AsymW4A8Int8Layout` with configurable group size (16), ConvRot rotation (GS:256), codebook, and symmetric quantization. Includes robust suffix mapping for `s_rel`, `s_channel`, and `codebook` tensors.
  * SVDQuant W4A4: Added SVDQuant W4A4 target format with configurable rank (8–512) and refinement iterations.
## 🔧 Fixes & Improvements

  * 2 new Text encoder profiles for maximum quality
  * Metadata Key Prefix Matching: Fixed critical bug where the Layers Info analyzer could not match legacy metadata entries for AIO-converted models. The converter strips `model.diffusion_model.` when writing metadata keys, but the analyzer previously only tried exact match or stripping `model.`. Now uses ordered prefix stripping (`model.diffusion_model.` → `diffusion_model.` → `model.`) plus 3-segment suffix fallback.
  * Legacy Label Parity: Fixed `_label_from_legacy_meta` to display group sizes (`GS:256`, `QGS:64`) and handle all format types (`awq_w4a16`, `int4_cr`, `nvfp4`, `mxfp8`) identically to `_label_from_comfy_quant`. Previously returned bare labels like `INT8_CONVROT` without group size info.
  * ConvRot Metadata Integrity: Verified that `convrot: true` is only written to metadata when rotation actually succeeds. The native path uses a `convrot_used` flag gated by try/except; the comfy-kitchen path writes it only after successful `quantize()` call. Failed rotations fall back to unrotated INT8 or BF16 without false metadata.
  * Dequantization Safety: Added input validation that rejects models containing lossless-incompatible formats (NVFP4, MXFP8, W4A4, AWQ W4A16, ConvRot-rotated INT8) when attempting to dequantize for re-conversion. Prevents silent quality degradation…[truncated]</excerpt>

Match StarNodes metadata names to their tensor names.

StarNodes AIO metadata strips model.diffusion_model. from layer names, while tensor keys retain that prefix. The exact lookups at src/model_io/safetensors_io.cpp:264-265 skip the int8_convrot configuration even when both tensors exist. The affected weight then does not enter the INT8 tensorwise path.

Normalize only the documented prefixes before matching. Accept a normalized name only when its .weight and .weight_scale tensors identify one unambiguous module. Add coverage for an AIO checkpoint with _quantization_metadata and no matching .comfy_quant tensor.

Use the ConvRot default when the group size is absent.

If an int8_convrot layer omits both group-size keys, this code sets group_size to zero. The validation at lines 388-395 then rejects the weight, even when its input width supports the documented default of 256. Apply that default for rotated INT8 layers, then retain the existing divisibility check. (github.com)
