fix: forward ref_image_args to the video pipeline - #2177
philipsorst wants to merge 2 commits into
Conversation
--ref-image-args was only plumbed through sd_img_gen_params_t, so every key was silently dropped in vid_gen mode. For MiniMax-H3 Ref2VA this meant references were always rescaled to the canvas area, and the documented resize_before_vae=false escape hatch had no effect. Generation metadata still recorded the value. Add ref_image_args to sd_vid_gen_params_t (appended last to keep struct offsets stable), forward it from the CLI and server, and resolve it in generate_video() instead of using a default-constructed RefImageParams. AnimateDiff, which reuses the image path, forwards the value too. Add a ref_image_size key with match (default) and max modes, matching ComfyUI's nodes_minimax_h3.py. match reproduces the previous arithmetic exactly, so existing renders are unchanged; max sizes references by a 2048 px short edge for better identity fidelity. Neither mode upscales. Both keep the per-axis 32-px rounding that MiniMax-H3's patchify_3d requires. The new RefImageParams member is part of ConditioningCache::same_params() so that requests differing only by this setting do not reuse stale conditioning. H3 consumes references through its own packed sequence rather than the generic conditioner/DiT reference path, so the remaining keys cannot take effect there. resolve_ref_image_params() now warns for those instead of dropping them silently, and warns that resize_before_vae=false is unsupported rather than ignoring it. Invalid values are reported once and not repeated by the per-model warnings. Also log the effective reference dimensions per image and warn when reference patch tokens exceed 4x the generated video's tokens. Verification: built stable-diffusion, sd-cli and sd-server and ran MiniMax-H3 Ref2VA with and without ref_image_size=max; match keeps the previous reference dimensions, max produces the 2048-short-edge sizing. The match branch was additionally checked against the previous inline formula with no mismatches.

The ref_image_size docs claimed both modes only downscale references. Neither mode scales a reference up beyond its limit, but the per-axis snap to the 32 px grid can still grow an axis by up to 16 px, so the statement was wrong: a 48 px axis becomes 64. Describe the actual behavior in docs/edit.md, docs/minimax_h3.md and the server API docs, and record the reasoning at the call site. Flooring max instead of rounding it would under-size in-limit references and diverge from ComfyUI's nodes_minimax_h3.py, which rounds in both branches, so the rounding is kept for both modes. Addresses the ref_image_size=max review comment on leejet#2177.

Qualify the 16-pixel growth limit.
align32 applies a 32-pixel minimum after rounding. For a scaled axis below 16 pixels, this can increase the axis by more than 16 pixels; for example, 1 pixel becomes 32 pixels. State that the 16-pixel limit applies to values at least 16 pixels, and document the larger increase caused by the minimum-size clamp.

Thanks for fixing the video argument plumbing. I found two things that need fixing:
- The align32 lambda fails to compile with MSVC 14.36 in C++17 mode: C3493 complains that kCanvasMultiple isn’t captured. Explicitly capturing it, or moving the constant inside the lambda, fixes this.
- In prepare_video_generation_embeds(), LingBot still forces vlm_resize_mode to AREA after copying the resolved parameters. This changes how the size values are interpreted. For example, vlm_resize_mode=longest_side,vlm_size=768 turns a 1024×1024 input into 28×28 instead of the expected 756×756 after alignment. Can we preserve the requested mode here? The default is already AREA.
Summary
--ref-image-argswas only plumbed throughsd_img_gen_params_t.sd_vid_gen_params_thad no such field, and
generate_video()built a default-constructedRefImageParams, so every key was silently dropped invid_genmode. The CLIand the server still accepted the value, and generation metadata still recorded
it, so a MiniMax-H3 Ref2VA render was stamped with a setting that provably had
no effect.
For H3 this meant references were always rescaled to the generation canvas area,
and the documented
resize_before_vae=falseescape hatch did nothing.Plumbing
ref_image_argstosd_vid_gen_params_t, appended after all existingmembers so member offsets stay stable for prebuilt consumers, and initialize
it in
sd_vid_gen_params_init().SDGenerationParams::to_sd_vid_gen_params_t()andthrough the AnimateDiff path, which reuses the image pipeline.
resolve_ref_image_params()ingenerate_video()instead of using a default
RefImageParams, and pass the result toprepare_video_generation_latents(),prepare_video_generation_embeds()andthe sampling calls.
ref_image_argsin thevid_gendefaults from/sdcpp/v1/capabilitiesso clients can discover it.New
ref_image_sizekey (match|max)resize_before_vae=falsecannot be honored for H3:MinimaxH3Transformer3DModelpatches references with
DiT::patchify_3dwithout padding (it asserts exactdivisibility) and derives RoPE positions and segment lengths from the latent
shapes outside the graph. A sizing knob is actionable instead, and it is what
other implementations expose (ComfyUI
nodes_minimax_h3.py, diffusers, SGLang):match(default) scales each reference down to the generation's pixel area.It reproduces the previous inline arithmetic exactly, so existing renders are
unchanged.
maxsizes references by a 2048 px short edge for better identity fidelity.Neither mode upscales, and both keep the per-axis rounding to the 32 px grid
(16 px VAE x patch 2) that
patchify_3drequires, so no graph change is needed. As in ComfyUI's
max(CANVAS_MULTIPLE, round(...)), rounding can grow a dimensionby up to 16 px and very small references are widened to 32 px.
The new member is appended last in
RefImageParamsbecause the preset rows arepositionally initialized, and it is part of
ConditioningCache::same_params()so requests that differ only by this setting do not reuse stale conditioning.
Diagnostics
resolve_ref_image_params()warns for keys that cannot take effect for H3(
preset,pass_to_vlm,pass_to_dit,ref_index_mode,vae_input_max_pixels,vlm_resize_mode,vlm_min_size,vlm_max_size,vlm_size) instead of ignoring them silently.resize_before_vae=falsewarns that H3 needs 32-px-aligned references andcannot skip resizing.
ref_image_sizeon a non-H3 model warns that it is H3-only.keys whose value the parser already rejected.

video's tokens. Reference latents ride through every sampling step, so a
2048x2048 reference (4096 patch tokens) against an 864x480 / 56-frame video
(6885 tokens) is a real cost increase worth surfacing.

Additional Information
Verified with MiniMax-H3 Ref2VA weights:
matchkeeps the previous reference dimensions, so existing renders areunchanged.
--ref-image-args "ref_image_size=max"now takes effect: on an 864x480 canvasa 1024x1024 reference is encoded at 640x640 under
matchand at 1024x1024under
max, and the new log line reports it.resize_before_vae=falsenow produce a warning invid_genmode.Two notes for reviewers:
ref_image_argsfor the other video families, sincethe resolved params now reach the conditioner and DiT instead of a
default-constructed struct.
ref_image_sizeitself is H3-only and warnselsewhere.
sd_vid_gen_params_tkeeps offsets stable but, as with theearlier
image_preprocessaddition, a consumer built against the older headermust initialize the struct with
sd_vid_gen_params_init()before passing it in.Not addressed here, kept separate to keep the change focused:
InterpolateMode::Nearest(thesd::Tensordefault), whereas ComfyUI uses Lanczos. This matters more in
maxmode.GenerationRequest's video constructor never setshas_ref_images(
src/pipeline/request.cpp:157), unlike the image constructor, so guidanceresolution treats video requests as having no references. Unrelated bug.
