BREAKING CHANGE: Async job timestamps now use Unix milliseconds instead of seconds.

Summary

  • Allow starting the server without a model and loading, switching or unloading models through recipe APIs.
  • Embed built-in JSON recipes and support custom recipes under model directories, with component requirements, generation defaults, feature declarations and publisher links.
  • Support multiple model directories, SD WebUI directory aliases and automatic LoRA discovery. Use full paths to distinguish duplicate display names.
  • Add searchable model and LoRA selectors, recipe-specific controls, automatic image/video mode selection and loading duration display. Preserve prompts when loading models and optionally apply defaults when selecting recipes.
  • Package Windows and shell launchers with releases, supporting executable discovery and ignored local configuration files.

📝 Walkthrough

The server adds built-in model recipes, model-file discovery, and HTTP endpoints for model status, loading, and unloading. Generation routes expose recipe-derived defaults and capabilities. New shell and batch launchers are included in build archives. Async job timestamps now use milliseconds.

Changes: Server Model Catalog and Runtime

Layer / File(s) Summary
Recipe definitions and policy
examples/server/recipes/*.json, examples/server/recipes/README.md, examples/server/recipes/defaults.md, AGENTS.md, CONTRIBUTING.md
Adds built-in recipes with model slots, generation defaults, and feature declarations. Adds recipe policy and defaults documentation, plus contributor instructions.
Catalog validation and build integration
examples/server/model_catalog.*, examples/server/CMakeLists.txt, examples/server/recipes_builtin.h.in
Adds recipe validation and normalization, model-file discovery, status reporting, and model-load preparation. CMake discovers recipe files and embeds them in the server.
Model roots and startup wiring
examples/server/runtime.*, examples/server/main.cpp, examples/server/README.md
Adds repeatable --model-dir support and model-root scanning. Initializes the catalog at startup and documents launcher configuration, model directories, discovery, and lifecycle behavior.
Model endpoints and generation integration
examples/server/routes.h, examples/server/routes_models.cpp, examples/server/routes_openai.cpp, examples/server/routes_sdapi.cpp, examples/server/routes_sdcpp.cpp, examples/server/api.md, examples/server/frontend
Adds model catalog, status, load, and unload endpoints. Routes use runtime protection, and capability responses include model features, runtime status, and LoRA display paths.
Millisecond job timestamps
examples/server/async_jobs.*, examples/server/runtime.*, examples/server/routes_sdcpp.cpp, examples/server/api.md
Changes async job timestamps and expiration calculations to milliseconds and updates API examples and timestamp guidance.

Server Launchers

Layer / File(s) Summary
Launcher scripts and packaging
start-server.sh, start-server.bat, .gitattributes, .gitignore, .github/workflows/build.yml, examples/server/README.md
Adds shell and batch launchers with local configuration and executable discovery. Build workflows include the scripts in platform archives and set the shell script’s executable permission.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b7ff4

The new model-management features look sound overall. Two follow-ups remain. When the server starts with a model given on the command line, the capabilities endpoint advertises inputs the loaded model cannot use, such as IP-Adapter, ControlNet, high-noise or VACE controls. The API documentation also says successful responses are unchanged, even though job timestamps now use milliseconds. Both are bounded fixes; neither blocks the core workflows.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to b7ff4

The new management APIs allow callers that can reach the server to switch or unload its shared active model. Loopback defaults and restricted file selection limit exposure, but network-facing or shared deployments need an explicit access-control boundary.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · observed: New management endpoints give every reachable caller authority over the process-wide active model without authentication or operation-specific authorization. An idle server can be unloaded, or switched to another cataloged configuration, affecting subsequent clients rather than only the caller's request. Existing loopback defaults and generation access limit the incremental exposure, but model lifecycle control was previously held by startup configuration. The pending-job gate prevents interruption of active work; it does not authorize management operations.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported management blast radius is the shared active context and catalog of one server process, including subsequent requests from other clients of that process. Actual network reachability, deployment-level authentication and tenant sharing are unknown; broader environment compromise is not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — A caller reaching the management routes can issue unload without a request-body credential or authorization check. Once no generation is pending, this clears the shared context and subsequent generation requests receive model-not-loaded errors. A load request can instead select another valid catalog configuration. This is new lifecycle authority, not a claim that unauthenticated generation was introduced by this PR.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — File selection is constrained by declared slots, catalog identity, category checks and canonical containment within configured roots. Discovery also checks recipe and model containment; local recipe files are limited to 1 MiB. These controls constrain service filesystem authority but do not authorize the requesting client.
  • observed — The server reflects arbitrary request origins and answers OPTIONS requests permissively in both base and head. This is a pre-existing policy inherited by the new management routes, not a newly introduced CORS policy. Whether an external page can reach a particular local deployment also depends on browser and network restrictions not established here.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Establish an explicit authorization boundary for lifecycle management, separate from ordinary generation access where clients have different trust levels. For browser-driven management, restrict accepted origins rather than treating the inherited permissive CORS behavior as a security boundary.

Qualify the response-compatibility statement.

The job created, started, and completed fields now use milliseconds instead of seconds. These successful responses therefore change. State the timestamp exception here so clients do not rely on the broader compatibility claim.
