SESF-75, re-scoped to the timeline only.

Why

Subagent and compaction transcripts (session IDs that start with agent-) crowd some issue timelines. On 2026-11-05, 65 of the 940 issues with 10 or more tagged turns were at least 30% agent-* turns (STRK-29: 237 of 269). Search keeps these rows. In the nightly evals they fill 4–6% of top-10 slots, close to their 5.4% share of the index, and two eval queries (id-11, cp-01) are answered only by agent-* rows. SESF-106 covers a possible search rank penalty.

Changes

  • provider_adapters.is_subagent_session is the one check; list_sessions uses it too.
  • rag_engine.get_issue_timeline(include_subagents=False) filters inside _passes, before the collector, so limit counts visible turns. It returns TimelineResult, a list that carries hidden_subagents (distinct doc IDs that passed every other filter).
  • get_issue_timeline_async now forwards newest and include_subagents.
  • sessions_by_issue passes include_subagents=True, so get_memory_context is unchanged.
  • MCP get_issue_timeline takes include_subagents (strict bool) and ends its output with a hidden-count line. GET /timeline takes include_subagents=true|false (400 otherwise) and adds hidden_subagents to the envelope.
  • README, CHANGELOG, CLAUDE.md and AGENTS.md updated.

Tests

13 new tests in tests/test_issue_timeline.py, written first. ruff check . is clean, and the full suite passes against a local Postgres 17 (1508 passed, 3 skipped for the parity model cache). Vale reports no alerts on the added lines.

Version: 0.22.0 (minor): new include_subagents parameter, and the timeline's default output changes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Timeline results now hide subagent and compaction transcript turns by default, with a count of hidden turns included in the output.
    • Use include_subagents=true to show those turns. The option is available in timeline requests and the HTTP endpoint.
    • Timeline limits apply to visible turns; search results continue to include subagent turns.

Walkthrough

Issue timelines now hide agent- subagent and compaction turns by default, count hidden turns, and accept an option to include them. The MCP tool and HTTP endpoint expose the option. Search results continue to include those turns.

Changes

Issue timeline subagent handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Timeline filtering and result handling
provider_adapters.py, rag_engine.py, session_listing.py, tests/test_issue_timeline.py
The timeline engine uses a shared subagent-session detector. It excludes matching turns by default after other filters, counts distinct hidden document IDs, and does not count hidden turns toward the limit. The async wrapper forwards the inclusion option. Session grouping explicitly includes subagent rows. Tests cover filtering, counting, limits, and forwarding.
MCP and HTTP timeline interfaces
tools.py, http_server.py, tests/test_issue_timeline.py
The MCP tool accepts a boolean include_subagents option and formats a hidden-turn notice, including for empty results. The HTTP endpoint accepts only "true" or "false" and returns hidden_subagents in its JSON response. Tests cover both interfaces.
Documentation and release version
AGENTS.md, CHANGELOG.md, CLAUDE.md, README.md, version.py
The documentation describes the default exclusion, the inclusion option, and hidden-turn reporting. The changelog adds the 0.22.0 entry, and the package version changes to 0.22.0.

Explanation

The title names the primary change: get_issue_timeline now hides agent-* subagent transcripts by default. The objectives and file summaries confirm this is the main behavior change, with include_subagents added as the opt-in. The title is short, specific, and uses the ticket prefix the team appears to use.

🟡 Changes recommended

The hidden-subagent count can underreport qualifying FTS-only matches beyond the 500-row fallback cap, making MCP and HTTP notices inaccurate until the count is made complete or clearly bounded.

What changed in this PR

This pull request updates issue timelines to hide agent-* subagent and compaction transcript turns by default while preserving them in search and memory-context flows.

Changes:

  • Adds include_subagents filtering across the engine, MCP tool, and HTTP endpoint.
  • Centralizes subagent-session detection and reports hidden-turn counts.
  • Adds regression tests, documentation updates, changelog entries, and version 0.22.0.

Review findings include an incomplete hidden count when FTS results exceed the 500-row cap, misleading wording when all matching turns are hidden, and a stale API reference in DocVault/Overview.md.

…S caps

The timeline's keyword fallback fetches at most _TIMELINE_FTS_FETCH_CAP
rows, so FTS-only agent-* turns past that window are not counted.
TimelineResult.hidden_subagents_capped is true when the fallback fills
its window; the MCP line then says 'At least N' and GET /timeline
returns hidden_subagents_capped.
Copilot AI lite review requested due to automatic review settings November 5, 2026 15:04
The keyword fallback fetched one LIMIT window and dropped agent-* rows
afterwards, so a window full of hidden rows could push visible untagged
matches out. The visible query now excludes agent-* sessions in SQL
(session_id NOT LIKE 'agent-%'), and a second query over agent-*
sessions alone feeds hidden_subagents and hidden_subagents_capped.

🟡 Changes recommended

A moderate issue remains in tools.py: when the capped FTS slice lacks an agent row, the warning is suppressed even though hidden turns may exist in the unseen tail, obscuring the lower-bound result.

When the agent-* FTS query fills its window but none of its rows pass
the timeline filters, more qualifying rows can sit past the window.
format_timeline now says hidden turns may exist in that case.

🔵 Needs a closer look

Human assessment is needed because moderate hidden issues affect default timeline completeness and the accuracy of hidden-session counts, making the change too complex to approve without further review.
