feat(web): daily API read counts per client in analytics, one cancel event name (web 0.62.2) - #614
API read counts per client. Calls that only read data (list requests, wait/poll, get an endpoint, search) were never audited, so SDK, CLI and MCP use was mostly invisible in analytics. Reads made with an API key or agent token (GET/HEAD) are now counted per account, UTC day and client, and the nightly usage report sends:
api_reads (the day's total) on usage_daily;
one api_reads_daily event per client ({ day, client, reads }), with the same client names the audit events carry (requestClient(), formerly the private auditClient()), so writes and reads chart side by side.
One cancellation event name. The browser sent subscription_cancelled; the server's Polar event and the audit action use subscription_canceled. The browser now sends subscription_canceled too.
Privacy policy names the read counts. Changelog entry and web 0.62.2.
Why counted this way
Nothing is written or sent per request. authenticateRequest() (which every bearer route goes through, plus the two search routes that validate on their own) bumps an in-memory map keyed by (account, day, client). Every minute each process adds its counts to analytics_api_reads in oneanalytics_add_api_reads(jsonb) call, an upsert of one row per key. So the database sees a few small statements a minute regardless of API traffic, several web processes add up correctly, and the hot path costs a map update.
Alternatives considered:
A row write or UPDATE per request: a write on every read, on the same rows, for a count.
Redis: optional in this deployment, and the counts would still need moving into the report.
Sending to PostHog straight from memory once a day: lost on every restart and split across processes.
Trade-off: a process that stops loses at most its last minute of counts. The map is capped at 20,000 keys between flushes. A failed write puts the counts back for the next flush. Browser sessions are not counted (the dashboard has its own analytics), and neither are agent sandbox tokens with no account behind them.
Migration 00089
New table analytics_api_reads (RLS on, client roles revoked, cascade on account delete, kept 35 days by a nightly cron job). New function analytics_add_api_reads(jsonb). analytics_daily_accounts(date) is dropped and recreated with api_reads and api_reads_by_client, and it now also lists accounts whose only activity that day was reading. All service-role only.
Apply before the deploy: the running release ignores the extra columns. A flush before the migration would just fail and retry.
Tests
Unit: lib/analytics-reads.test.ts (counting, client naming, filtering, flush, retry after failure), reporter test for the new events, search route mocks.
Integration: tests/integration/analytics-api-reads.test.ts against the local stack (flush adds up, unknown accounts dropped, report lists the read-only account with per-client counts).
pnpm test (web unit) green, typecheck and lint clean; migration applied to dev.
…event name (web 0.62.2)
Reads made with an API key or agent token (GET and HEAD) are counted in
memory per account, UTC day and client, and each process adds its counts
to analytics_api_reads once a minute in one statement (migration 00089).
The daily usage report sends the day's total as api_reads on usage_daily
and one api_reads_daily event per client, named like the audit events'
client property. Nothing is sent or written per request.
The browser's subscription_cancelled event is now subscription_canceled,
the spelling the server's Polar event and the audit action use.

The change adds daily API read counts by client to account analytics. Authenticated bearer reads are aggregated and stored, then included in daily usage reports. The privacy policy and changelog describe the counts. The subscription cancellation analytics event is renamed.

Read-count storage and report contract supabase/migrations/00089_analytics_api_reads.sql, apps/web/lib/supabase/database.ts
A new table and RPC store per-account, UTC-day, per-client read counts. The daily account report returns total and per-client read counts.
Client classification and read aggregation apps/web/lib/analytics-server.ts, apps/web/lib/analytics-reads.ts, apps/web/lib/analytics-reads.test.ts
The shared client classifier supports in-memory aggregation of GET and HEAD reads and periodic writes through the RPC. Unit tests cover grouping, exclusions, successful flushes, and failed writes.
Successful bearer-token validation records reads through the shared counting helper. Missing or invalid tokens return before the search routes record a read.
Daily usage events include the total read count, and positive per-client counts produce api_reads_daily events. Tests cover event generation, persistence, and reported totals. The privacy policy and changelog describe the read counts; the app version is updated to 0.62.2. The PostHog queue limit increases to 10,000.

kroqdotdev/webhooks-cc#595: Adds the daily account analytics pipeline that this change extends with API read counts.
Daily analytics can permanently undercount during prolonged write failures or saturated retry buffers. A rare integration-test race and outdated privacy dates also remain. These are bounded analytics and documentation risks, with no established impact on API availability.

Assert the countBearerRead call in the search route tests.
The route calls countBearerRead after bearer validation succeeds. The test mocks it as vi.fn() and never asserts on it, so removing the call keeps every test in this file passing. Assert the call for a valid token and its absence for an invalid token.

Update the search route tests to track and assert `countBearerRead`: verify it
is called with the request, token, and validated user and plan after valid
bearer authentication, and verify it is not called when bearer validation fails.
Assert the countBearerRead calls in the count route tests.
The countBearerRead mock is a no-op vi.fn(), and no test in this file checks it. Removing the call at route.ts:40, or moving it above token validation, leaves all three tests passing. The call records API reads for the analytics counter, so a regression would drop read counts silently. Assert the call on the valid-token path and its absence on the invalid-token path.
// In "returns a retained search count for a validated bearer token"expect(mockFns.countBearerRead).toHaveBeenCalledWith(expect.any(Request),"token",{userId: "user_123",plan: "pro"});// In "returns 401 for invalid bearer tokens"expect(mockFns.countBearerRead).not.toHaveBeenCalled();

Wire the countBearerRead mock in the API-auth module mock to a spy accessible to

assertions in the existing count route tests.

- A flush's keys count toward the 20,000-key cap while it is out, so a
failed write puts every count back instead of dropping some.
- The daily report flushes this process's counts before reading the day.
- Privacy "Last updated" and its sitemap date move to November 4.
- The integration test uses a day the nightly cleanup never reaches.
- The search route tests assert the read is counted, and only when valid.

Nitpicks addressed in b2cc155: both search route tests now assert countBearerRead is called with the request, token and validated user on success, and not at all for an invalid token.
