Resolves januskey's identity from code, grades its proof claims against the estate's mathematics architecture, and rewrites the one proof inherited from another repository instead of relabelling it.

1. Identity, resolved from code (docs/adr/0001-identity-and-scope.md)

jk is the reversibility path over reversible-core. Measured, not inferred from the name: coupling between that path and the key subsystem is zero in both directions, the audit chain is library-only (main.rs never builds an AuditLog), and the content store is plaintext. The key-lifecycle feature gates the jk-keys binary out of the default build; the module move it specifies is written down and not applied (needs a toolchain).

No capability was deleted to make a claim true. Consumption (V-1 valence-shell, V-2 ochrance, V-3 aletheia) is pinned as DESIGNED with a named change condition, because no repository outside this workspace depends on reversible-core today.

2. Claim surfaces, restated at the strength of the ledger

Wiki theory pages, THREAT_MODEL, README, ARCHITECTURE, module headers and CLI help no longer claim provable reversibility, a GDPR determination, or an ECC implementation that the CLI refuses. The Valence Shell integration is described as designed.

Two files remain wrong and are agent-denied (@trust-deny): the Trustfile's "key-management tool" sentence and threat-model.a2ml's stale home-rolled-HMAC description. Owner edits, ADR-0001 §6.

3. T-8 — atomic metadata log (still OPEN)

MetadataStore::save now calls transaction::write_atomic (made pub(crate)), so the operation metadata log takes the same write → sync → rename path that T-5 already tests and the rest of the crate already used. New test metadata::tests::save_replaces_the_log_atomically covers the rename, the absence of leftovers, and a torn temporary file from an earlier crash.

The row stays OPEN: nothing in the session that wrote it built or ran it. Its other half — retry after a failed mark_undone — is untouched.

4. Proof grades under mathesis and standards/3-practice/PROOF-POLICY.adoc

New page docs/theory/PROOF-GRADES.adoc maps every ledger row onto the owner's grading vocabulary, with a receipt naming commit, prover, version, flags and sibling pin. No percentage appears anywhere.

  • 5 of 12 PROVEN rows are Grade 3: G-1, T-1, T-2, T-3 (the Agda theory modules, receipt at 4afb710, Agda 2.6.4.3, resource-algebra pinned at cf9235c) and E-1m, new here.
  • The 7 Idris2 PROVEN rows are interface/ABI contracts, which §1 classes as engineering: no mathesis grade applies and none is claimed.
  • No row claims Grade 2i, 2ii or 1.

scripts/check-agda.sh now runs §2.1's canonical invocation (--safe --without-K --cubical-compatible). An earlier revision of the page predicted the flag would fail against the pinned --without-K sibling; I measured it instead — both modules type-check (14 and 16 UnsupportedIndexedMatch warnings, statements about computation under transport) — and the prediction is withdrawn in the file.

docs/estate/environment-toolchains.md records what the agent sandbox can install at the versions CI pins (Agda 2.6.4.3, Zig 0.13.0 — ffi/zig builds with 15/15 integration tests passing) and the exact hosts that block Rust, Creusot and Idris2.

5. The epistemic inheritance, rewritten (verification/proofs/agda/Epistemic.agda)

The Idris Knows modality could not state the claims attributed to it: Knows Adversary a is uninhabited by construction, so E-1 was a property of a datatype; and "the system forgets the old key" was unstateable, so the lemma had been deleted. Annotating it would not have helped.

The Agda module models knowledge as indiscriminability over a per-agent observation, which makes each statement provable or refutable:

  • adversary-ignorant — two worlds with the same observation and different stores;
  • obliterate-cuts-recovery, obliterate-ignorance — obliteration empties the store, and the ignorance survives it because the observation did not change;
  • rotate-forgets-old, rotate-forgets-canUse — after rotation no agent, the system included, can use the old key;
  • knows-observation — the positive control, so "does not know" is not vacuous.

Two fixtures pin the refusals: AdversaryKnows.agda (2 != 1) and OldKeyStillUsable.agda (!= true). E-1 stays OPEN: a model of channels is not a model of cryptography (X-1). The Idris module is unchanged except for comments pointing at the Agda record.

Verification

Green in this sandbox, with the pinned prover:

$ AGDA=/tmp/tc/bin/agda bash scripts/check-agda.sh
Agda version 2.6.4.3-56f5f56 ; resource-algebra at cf9235c
Checking Reversibility / TransactionAtomicity / Epistemic
[PASS] refused as expected: AdversaryKnows, CommitWhenIdle, ForwardRollback,
       HiddenLoss, OldKeyStillUsable, ReviveAfterObliterate
[check-agda] OK

Not runnable here: cargo test and Clippy (no rustc, no crates.io in the sandbox), so the T-8 test and every TESTED row's command take CI as their first run. ffi/zig was built and its 15 integration tests passed with Zig 0.13.0.

Dashboard figures moved with the ledger (136 tests, 12 PROVEN), because dashboard-check compares them against what it measures.

Reviewer notes and open obligations

  • The Agda receipt is pending re-earning. The CI run cited in PROOF-GRADES.adoc predates the flag change and does not cover Epistemic.agda; the first run on this PR is the new receipt.
  • CI pins Agda twice — 2.6.4.3 in agda-proofs.yml, 2.6.3 in dashboard-check.yml. Pre-existing, now consequential, recorded rather than silently changed: unifying it means choosing a base image, which is a separate decision.
  • Out of scope by design: four paste-ready prompts for other estate repositories live in docs/estate/prompts/ (no cross-repo change was made). hyperpolymath/stuff-of-awesome and hyperpolymath/catachresis-colloquium return 404 and appear in none of the owner's public repositories, so no prompt was written for them.

…s ledger

The repo's own instruments (claims ledger + dashboard-check) already said the
headline claims were OPEN; the surfaces did not. This aligns them. No ledger row
changes status, and no test or proof count changes.

- rmo-primitive.md: rewritten. What jk obliterate does (3 passes with
  sync_all, unlink, shared-blob rule, log purge), that the commitment is a
  tamper-evident record and not a proof of absence, that storage_cleared is
  self-asserted, a PROVEN/TESTED/ASSUMED/OPEN table, and an erasure-request
  table naming what a controller must still determine. The informal theorem
  with its PLACEHOLDER-PROOF and three non-existent CLI commands are gone.
- rmr-primitive.md: rewritten to the strength of ledger rows T-1..T-8,
  including what FileMetadata::apply actually restores (permissions yes;
  owner, mtime and symlink identity no) and that a transaction gives a
  resumable rollback, not isolation.
- mpr.md / maa-framework.md / formal-model.md / theory index: de-claimed;
  MAA's compliance table became a requirements table with a
  'what this does not establish' column.
- THREAT_MODEL.adoc: '256-bit ECC' row removed (the CLI refuses to generate
  Ed25519/X25519), BLAKE3 removed (not a dependency), content store noted as
  unencrypted, MPR described as design vocabulary.
- CLI: about/long_about and the Obliterate help no longer claim provable
  reversibility or a GDPR determination; crate descriptions and module
  headers aligned.
- EXPLAINME.adoc: phantom '100% Reversible' heading replaced by the mechanism
  it can defend; file map corrected to the post-extraction tree; CRG grade
  corrected from C to D.
- TOPOLOGY diagram label de-claimed; STATE records the session.
- docs/estate/2026-11-01-handoff-and-consistency-audit.md: the recon, the
  concern split, the 16-item invariant audit and per-repo handoff prompts.

…e surfaces

Identity (ADR-0001, docs/adr/0001-identity-and-scope.md), decided by measuring
coupling rather than reading the name:

- The jk binary is main.rs + lib.rs + operations.rs + delta.rs + obliteration.rs
  over reversible-core. That is the product.
- Coupling to the key subsystem is zero in both directions: main.rs references
  no keys:: / KeyManager / keys_cli, and keys.rs imports only
  attestation::AuditLog. main.rs never constructs an AuditLog, so the audit
  chain is library-only; the content store is plaintext, so the key store
  protects no file content.
- Decision: key lifecycle is not part of the product. The jk-keys binary is
  gated behind the opt-in "key-lifecycle" feature; the module move is specified
  in ADR-0001 §5 and NOT applied (no rustc/cargo/crates.io here to build or
  test it). The invariant is satisfied for the product, not yet for the module,
  and the ADR says so instead of claiming the win.
- Consumption claims pinned: reversible-core's "shared foundation that all three
  applications use" was false. Ledger rows V-1 (valence-shell), V-2 (ochrance),
  V-3 (aletheia) are DESIGNED with a stated condition for change;
  ContentStore/ManifestEmitter/ReversibleExecutor docs say intended, not
  consumed; ARCHITECTURE gains a Consumption status table. Ledger re-parses
  clean, 46 rows, PROVEN count unchanged at 11.

Blocked, not worked around: two contradicting files are agent-denied by the
Trustfile (@trust-deny modify-trustfile, modify-threat-model) and are listed as
owner edits in ADR-0001 §6.

Also closes the mechanical defects from the audit: 241 unwrap() calls with the
measurement command (was 225 in one place, 265 in another); Rust LOC 11,160 (was
an unreproducible ~12,200); STATE test-coverage reconciled to 135 tests / 11
PROVEN rows; AI manifest paths (.machine_readable/bot_directives/, README.adoc);
jk obliterate not jk shred, with rename/obliterate/gc documented; KEY_LIFECYCLE
marked as specification with four unimplemented commands named.

T-8 (non-atomic metadata log) remains open and un-attempted: it needs a build.

Grades (new docs/theory/PROOF-GRADES.adoc; PROOF-NEEDS §Proof grades under
mathesis; STATE [proof-grades]):

- Of the 11 PROVEN rows, four have an Agda artefact — G-1, T-1, T-2, T-3 —
  and they are Grade 3 under mathesis §5: each type-checks in Agda and none
  has been translated to an independent foundational system.
- The receipt is a green agda-proofs.yml run (40867211509) at commit
  4afb710, Agda 2.6.4.3, resource-algebra
  pinned at cf9235c. Both modules, scripts/check-agda.sh,
  scripts/fetch-siblings.sh and the workflow are byte-identical at that
  commit and at this branch's HEAD, so the receipt covers these rows as
  they stand.
- The seven Idris2 PROVEN rows (A-1, A-2, C-1..C-5) are interface/ABI
  contracts, which PROOF-POLICY §1 classes as engineering: no mathesis
  grade applies. The withdrawn Rust/SPARK shorthand is replaced by
  Rust -> Creusot, Ada -> SPARK, API/ABI -> Idris2, theory -> Agda.
- No row claims Grade 2i, 2ii or 1, and no confidence percentage appears
  anywhere.
- Two obligations recorded instead of skipped: the canonical invocation's
  --cubical-compatible is absent because the flag is infectious and every
  module of the pinned sibling is --without-K; and CI pins Agda twice
  (2.6.4.3 in agda-proofs.yml, 2.6.3 in dashboard-check.yml).

T-8: MetadataStore::save now calls crate::transaction::write_atomic
(pub(crate)), so the operation metadata log gets the same write, sync,
rename path the transaction log already tests in T-5. New test
metadata::tests::save_replaces_the_log_atomically. The row stays OPEN:
no toolchain here built or ran it. Declared tests 135 -> 136 in STATE,
READINESS and TOPOLOGY (what dashboard-check measures); wiki rmr page,
EXPLAINME and the audit evidence updated, with a dated addendum.

…x can install

Toolchains (new docs/estate/environment-toolchains.md, measured):
- Agda 2.6.4.3 (the agda-proofs.yml pin) installs from a PyPI wheel; Zig 0.13.0
  (the e2e.yml pin) likewise. Both gates now run here: check-agda.sh green, and
  ffi/zig builds with 15/15 integration tests passing.
- Rust, Creusot and Idris2 cannot be installed: static.rust-lang.org,
  crates.io, deb.debian.org and the GitHub release-asset host are outside the
  egress allowlist. The rustup failure and the pip rustup shims are recorded
  with their exact errors. Idris2 is pinned at v0.8.0, already its latest
  release. Zig 0.17.0 fails on build.zig (0.13-era API), recorded.

PROOF-POLICY §2.1 (scripts/check-agda.sh):
- The gate now runs the canonical --safe --without-K --cubical-compatible form.
  Measured before committing: both modules exit 0 (14 and 16
  UnsupportedIndexedMatch warnings, which are statements about computation under
  transport), and the four expected-rejection fixtures are still refused with
  their named messages.
- An earlier revision of PROOF-GRADES.adoc predicted the flag would fail against
  the pinned --without-K sibling. That prediction is withdrawn as wrong.
- Receipt bookkeeping stated: the 4afb710 CI receipt predates the flag, so the
  local run is recorded as reproduction and the next agda-proofs.yml run is the
  receipt. Agda 2.7.0.1 also type-checks both modules (its wheel needs a
  data/lib symlink); 2.8.0.2 untried.

Out-of-scope prompts, one file per repository, none touching januskey:
standards (four gaps in PROOF-POLICY that implementing it exposed), mathesis
(Grade 3 receipt provenance, non-axiom caveats, checker-change semantics),
resource-algebra (the OPEN homomorphism behind row G-3, and
--cubical-compatible), the-metadatastician (whether it ingests A2ML manifests).

Naming fact recorded rather than acted on: hyperpolymath/stuff-of-awesome and
hyperpolymath/catachresis-colloquium return 404 to an authenticated API call and
appear in none of the owner's 360 public repositories, so no prompt was written
for them.

…al adversary

The Idris `Knows` modality (src/abi/JanusKey/ABI/Types.idr §Level 12, carried over
from epistemic-types) could not state the claims the ledger attributed to it:
`Knows Adversary a` is uninhabited by construction, so E-1 was a property of a
datatype, and "the system forgets the old key" was unstateable and had been
deleted. Annotating it would not have helped, so the theory is rewritten.

verification/proofs/agda/Epistemic.agda:
- knowledge is indiscriminability over a per-agent observation, so ignorance is
  a proposition to prove rather than an absent constructor;
- adversary-ignorant: two worlds, same observation, different stores;
- obliterate-cuts-recovery: after obliterating h the store holds nothing at h;
- obliterate-ignorance: the adversary's ignorance survives the obliteration,
  because the operation changes the store channel and not the observation;
- rotate-forgets-old / rotate-forgets-canUse: after rotating old -> new no agent,
  the system included, can use the old key — the statement the Idris model could
  not make at all;
- knows-observation as the positive control, so "does not know" is not vacuous.

Two fixtures, in the house pattern: AdversaryKnows.agda (refused, 2 != 1) and
OldKeyStillUsable.agda (refused, != true). check-agda.sh now checks three
modules and six fixtures, and passes locally with Agda 2.6.4.3 under the
canonical PROOF-POLICY §2.1 flags.

Ledger: new row E-1m, PROVEN, Grade 3 (docs/theory/PROOF-GRADES.adoc). E-1 stays
OPEN — a model of channels is not a model of cryptography, and that assumption is
X-1. PROVEN 11 -> 12, carried through STATE, READINESS and TOPOLOGY, which
dashboard-check compares against the ledger.

The Idris module is unchanged apart from comments pointing at the Agda record; it
keeps its deleted lemma, so the gap is now visible in both places instead of one.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Operation metadata logs are now saved using an atomic write process, with tests covering repeated saves and stale temporary files.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified that reversibility and security claims remain unproved or conditional, and that obliteration is best-effort—not a guarantee of physical erasure or regulatory compliance.
    • Updated command guidance for jk obliterate, jk rename, and jk gc, and clarified which tools and features are available.
    • Expanded proof-status and verification notes, distinguishing checked model-level results from open security obligations.

This PR adds an Agda epistemic model and rejection fixtures, routes metadata-log saves through the atomic writer, and gates jk-keys behind a feature. It also revises repository scope, proof status, reversibility and obliteration claims, and supporting readiness, toolchain, and handoff records.

Changes: JanusKey scope and evidence

Layer / File(s) Summary
Repository identity and component boundaries
docs/adr/0001-identity-and-scope.md, ARCHITECTURE.adoc, README.adoc, crates/januskey-cli/Cargo.toml, crates/januskey-cli/src/lib.rs, crates/reversible-core/src/*, docs/security/KEY_LIFECYCLE.adoc, PROOF-NEEDS.adoc
The documents distinguish the jk path from the optional jk-keys binary and library-only components. They describe downstream reversible-core use as intended, not established.
Epistemic model and proof evidence
verification/proofs/agda/Epistemic.agda, tests/reject-agda/*, scripts/check-agda.sh, src/abi/JanusKey/ABI/*, docs/theory/PROOF-GRADES.adoc, PROOF-NEEDS.adoc, READINESS.adoc, TOPOLOGY.adoc, docs/wiki/theory/*
The Agda model proves results about observation-based knowledge, store removal, and key rotation. The checker and rejection fixtures include the model. Proof and readiness records distinguish these model results from open security and Rust-correspondence claims.
Atomic metadata-log saving
crates/reversible-core/src/metadata.rs, crates/reversible-core/src/transaction.rs, PROOF-NEEDS.adoc, docs/wiki/theory/rmr-primitive.md, docs/estate/2026-11-01-handoff-and-consistency-audit.md
MetadataStore::save now calls write_atomic. The new test checks saved entries and temporary-file behaviour. T-8 remains open pending the specified CI test evidence.
Reversibility and obliteration claim updates
EXPLAINME.adoc, README.adoc, crates/januskey-cli/src/*, docs/security/THREAT_MODEL.adoc, docs/wiki/theory/*, TESTING-REPORT.adoc, GLOSSARY.adoc
The documentation qualifies reversibility and obliteration claims. It describes storage and metadata limits, best-effort erasure, and the distinction between implementation evidence and security or compliance guarantees.
Estate, readiness, and toolchain records
.machine_readable/6a2/STATE.a2ml, 0-AI-MANIFEST.a2ml, CHANGELOG.adoc, READINESS.adoc, TOPOLOGY.adoc, docs/estate/*
The records update dates, repository paths, counts, proof-grade information, sandbox toolchain evidence, and cross-repository prompts.

P2 Badge Do not reuse the pre-change Agda receipt

The cited CI run predates both Epistemic.agda and the changed check-agda.sh, so it cannot cover all five theory rows or establish their current AGDA-VERIFIED status. docs/theory/PROOF-GRADES.adoc itself explicitly says that the receipt covers only the two unchanged modules and not the new module or checker; mark E-1m/current-checker verification as pending here or cite a new green run.

// - attestation.rs — an HMAC-SHA256-chained audit log. Library-only: `jk` never

P2 Badge Describe the keys-to-attestation dependency

The attestation key is in fact derived in keys.rs: KeyManager::init and unlock hash the KEK with "attestation" and pass the result to AuditLog, and KeyManager owns the audit log. attestation.rs also imports key-specific enums from keys.rs. Saying this is never derived there hides a real coupling that must be accounted for when extracting the key subsystem.

P2 Badge Use the nested audit subcommands

These newly documented “implemented” commands do not match the inspected Clap hierarchy in keys_cli.rs: Audit requires an AuditCommands child, and Verify exists only under that child. Consequently bare jk-keys audit reports a missing subcommand and top-level jk-keys verify is unknown; the working forms are jk-keys audit show and jk-keys audit verify.

**How it works:** the operation log (`crates/reversible-core/src/metadata.rs`) is
append-only: new operations are appended, existing entries are not edited in
place. `attestation.rs` chains entries with a real HMAC-SHA256

P2 Badge Do not call the mutable operation log append-only

Existing entries are edited during every successful undo: MetadataStore::mark_undone sets both undone and undo_operation_id before rewriting the log. The store also supports pruning and purging, so this newly added assertion overstates the audit semantics; describe it as an operation-history file with append, mutation, and deletion paths rather than claiming entries are never edited.

P2 Badge Remove Chown from the implemented operation layer

Chown exists only as an OperationType discriminant: FileOperation has no Chown variant or execute path, and OperationExecutor::undo explicitly returns “Chown undo not yet implemented.” Describing it as present in the operation layer incorrectly advertises a reversible operation; identify it as model-only and unimplemented instead.

P2 Badge Do not claim the CLI uses delta storage

execute_modify stores the complete original content in ContentStore, computes only a hash of the new content, and never calls delta.rs; repo-wide Rust references to Delta::compute are confined to that module's own tests. This newly added description therefore gives users a false storage/capability model and should describe the full original-content copy unless the delta module is actually wired into execution.

P2 Badge Do not call an unkeyed digest tamper-evident

verify_commitment merely recomputes SHA-256 from three public, editable record fields; there is no secret, signature, external timestamp, or chain anchor. Anyone able to edit obliterations.json can choose an earlier timestamp or alter the hash and nonce, then recompute a valid commitment, so this construction is neither tamper-evident nor resistant to backdating.

EXPLAINME.adoc:37-42
Minor · Security & Privacy · Quick win

Correct the audit-trail claim for ordinary jk operations.

The Claim 2 heading and the "How it works" paragraph imply that each jk operation is chained. They are not. operations.rs appends each change to the unkeyed operation metadata log in crates/reversible-core/src/metadata.rs. That log has no hashing or keying. The jk CLI never constructs an AuditLog. The keyed chain is written only by the jk-keys binary, which is built with the key-lifecycle feature. Readers may treat the operation log as tamper-evident, so the wording should say that it is append-only and unchained.

📝 Suggested wording
-=== Claim 2: "Audit trail — every tracked change is recorded and chained"
+=== Claim 2: "Audit trail — append-only operation log; keyed chain is not used by jk operations"

Add to the end of the "How it works" paragraph:

+The `jk` operations in `operations.rs` append to the unkeyed metadata log, so their
+entries are not in the HMAC chain. The `jk` CLI never constructs an `AuditLog`. The
+keyed chain is written only by the `jk-keys` binary, which is built with the
+`key-lifecycle` feature.

This overclaim is already present at the merge base, 4afb710e8664. This PR keeps it.

Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 4afb710e8664); the change keeps it reachable.

Date and scope the Agda run record.

The Agda row in the toolchain table gives no run date and names no modules. Its result, "both modules check, four fixtures refused", can be read as coverage of the current gate. scripts/check-agda.sh now checks three modules, including Epistemic. It also runs every fixture in tests/reject-agda/.

Add the run date and scope to the row. The row then reads as a dated measurement.

Add a file-identity check to the atomic save test.

The test still passes if MetadataStore::save writes the log in place. Its assertions check only temporary-file leftovers, the stale file, and the reopened entry count. A rename-based save gives the log a new inode. An in-place write keeps the old inode. Add the check to the test. **Accuracy note.** Everything below is a *specification*. The implemented `jk-keys`
subcommands are `init, list, generate, show, rotate, revoke, backup, status, audit,
export, verify, history`. Examples that use `restore`, `recover`,
`obliterate` or `verify-obliteration` describe behaviour that does not exist in the
CLI yet; they are marked where they appear.

Mark the unavailable restore, recover and obliterate examples.

The new accuracy note says examples for unavailable commands are marked where they appear. The restore and recover examples and the quick-reference recover and obliterate examples have no such marker. Add # not implemented to each, as the destruction section already does.

Correct the revoke example in the Implemented section.

The example uses --key-id and --reason. The jk-keys revoke command accepts neither. key_id is a positional argument, and no reason option exists. Copying the example makes clap reject the command, so the revocation does not run. Replace the example with jk-keys revoke <uuid> --force. Build the binary with --features key-lifecycle, because the command is gated behind that feature.

Correct the audit examples to jk-keys audit verify and jk-keys audit show.

The doc lists jk-keys audit and jk-keys verify under "Implemented". Neither form matches the jk-keys command tree. verify exists only as a nested subcommand of audit, and audit requires one. Copying either example does not inspect or verify the audit log. Document the working forms, and note that jk-keys builds only with the key-lifecycle feature.

Mark E-1m as awaiting CI, not as checked.

The page lists E-1m as Grade 3, but the only cited receipt covers Reversibility and TransactionAtomicity, not Epistemic.agda. The statement that no graded row awaits a check is therefore wrong for E-1m. The "four graded rows" count also conflicts with the five Grade 3 rows.

Correct the byte-identity claim for the gate script and the Epistemic receipt.

The added paragraph says scripts/check-agda.sh is byte-identical at commit 4afb710 and at this revision. It is not. Its blob differs (98b9f0d at the merge base, 27862c0 at head). The old script checks only Reversibility and TransactionAtomicity, and it omits --cubical-compatible. The paragraph then says the receipt covers the rows "as they stand", which includes E-1m. E-1m cites Epistemic.agda, which does not exist at 4afb710. Revise the paragraph so it states which files are identical, names the checker change, and says E-1m needs the new receipt.

📝 Suggested wording
-The modules, the gate script, the
-sibling fetch and the workflow are byte-identical at that commit and at this
-one, so the receipt covers these rows as they stand. Mathesis status for them:
-`AGDA-VERIFIED`.
+`Reversibility.agda`, `TransactionAtomicity.agda` and the workflow are
+byte-identical at that commit and at this one. `scripts/check-agda.sh` is not:
+it gained `--cubical-compatible` and the `Epistemic` module, and
+`Epistemic.agda` did not exist at that commit. The old receipt therefore covers
+G-1, T-1, T-2 and T-3 under the older checker only. Mathesis status for those
+four rows: `AGDA-VERIFIED`. E-1m needs the new receipt before it can be graded.

Revise the receipt paragraph to remove the claim that the gate script and
sibling fetch are byte-identical. State that Reversibility.agda,
TransactionAtomicity.agda and the workflow are identical, and that
scripts/check-agda.sh changed to add --cubical-compatible and the Epistemic
module; note Epistemic.agda was absent at the cited commit. Limit the old

Keep each file change and its log record consistent when the metadata save fails.

MetadataStore::save now writes the log through write_atomic, which creates a temporary file in the log's parent directory. In a directory that does not allow file creation, the save can now fail even when the log file itself is writable. The previous fs::write needed write access to the log file only.

In execute_modify (crates/januskey-cli/src/operations.rs:157-160), the file is written before append runs. If append then fails, the file keeps its new content and no record is saved. The entry also stays in memory. The CLI loop (crates/januskey-cli/src/main.rs:449-462) reports the error and continues, so the change cannot be undone through the log. The other execute_* functions follow the same order.

Make each file change and its record succeed or fail together. If the record cannot be saved, undo the file change and remove the entry that append added in memory. Report any failure of that undo as well. Do not save the record before the change. A failed change would then leave a record for an operation that did not run. Do not restore the file alone. The entry would remain in memory and a later successful save would persist a record for a reverted change.

Review comment at @crates/reversible-core/src/metadata.rs at line 299:
Coordinate file changes with metadata recording in execute_modify and the other
execute_* operations: apply the file change before calling append, and if
recording fails, restore the file and remove the entry append added in memory.
Report any failure while undoing either change, and ensure a failed file change
never leaves a saved record.

Correct the claim that --cubical-compatible silences the warnings.

The prompt says that adding --cubical-compatible to upstream pragmas makes the UnsupportedIndexedMatch warnings go away for every dependent. Agda does not work that way. The flag makes the warning apply to the module. Only -WnoUnsupportedIndexedMatch (or a fix to the warned clauses) removes it. Rewrite the item to state this, and to ask the maintainer to either change the warned clauses (such as ≤-trans) or record the warnings.

Correct the Chown claim in the RMR operation table.

The revised text says Chown exists in the operation layer and gives it a reversible inverse row. The operation layer has no Chown variant to execute, and its undo path for Chown returns an error. Reword the sentence to say that OperationType::Chown exists in the model only, and remove the Chown row from the inverse table or mark it as not implemented.

Rename the remaining shred references in the glossary to jk obliterate.

This PR renames the secure-obliteration entry to jk obliterate, but the glossary still names the same exception jk shred in two other entries. Readers who follow those entries look for a jk shred command, which the CLI does not provide.

Suggested fix
- The claim that no JanusKey operation (except `shred`) destroys the information required for inversion. Currently an engineering guarantee (implemented in Rust), not a formal theorem (mechanically verified proof pending).

P1 Badge Replace existing metadata logs portably

On Windows, the second and every later metadata save fails because write_atomic ends with fs::rename(tmp, path), and Rust's Windows implementation cannot rename over an existing destination. The first operation creates metadata.json; a subsequent delete or modify mutates the filesystem before this append fails, leaving the change unlogged and therefore not undoable. Use a platform-appropriate atomic replacement operation rather than a plain rename over the existing file.

P2 Badge State the distinct-key premise in E-1m

The cited rotate-forgets-old theorem proves this only under (old == new) ≡ false, but the PROVEN ledger statement omits that premise. When old == new, rotate takes its first branch and leaves that key usable, so the unconditional claim is false; qualify the row with the old/new-key inequality required by the theorem.

P2 Badge Keep the feature-gated binary in CI

Once jk-keys has this required feature, none of the checked commands in .github/workflows/e2e.yml builds or lints the binary: its build, test, and Clippy steps omit --all-features, and no other workflow enables key-lifecycle. cargo build --help confirms that features are activated only with --features or --all-features, while cargo metadata reports jk-keys as requiring key-lifecycle. Consequently future breakage in keys_cli.rs can merge unnoticed even though the documentation says the binary is kept working; add a CI build/test or Clippy invocation with this feature enabled.

P2 Badge Exercise adversary knowledge in the rejection fixture

This fixture never mentions Knows, observe, or adversary; it only asks Agda to equate the deliberately different stores in x₂ and x₁. It will therefore keep being refused with 2 != 1 even if the epistemic relation regresses so that the adversary can know the store, making the advertised negative control insensitive to the property it is named for. State the rejected proposition in terms of Knows adversary ... x₁ so the fixture actually covers E-1m's knowledge claim.

=== Claim 2: "Audit trail — every tracked change is recorded and chained"

**How it works:** the operation log (`crates/reversible-core/src/metadata.rs`) is
append-only: new operations are appended, existing entries are not edited in

P2 Badge Do not claim file operations enter the HMAC chain

The operation log is not connected to AuditLog: repo-wide construction sites are limited to KeyManager and attestation tests, while main.rs, OperationExecutor, and MetadataStore never construct or call it. Thus ordinary jk file changes are written only to the mutable JSON metadata log and are not chained at all, not merely missing obliteration entries as the caveat says. Present the HMAC chain as a key-lifecycle/library capability unless the filesystem operation path is actually wired into it.

P2 Badge Describe non-interactive obliteration as refusal

For a non-interactive invocation without --yes, cmd_obliterate checks stdin().is_terminal() and immediately aborts with an error; it cannot ask for confirmation in that context. Scripts following this new documentation can therefore wait for a prompt that never occurs and instead fail. State that non-interactive use requires --yes, while the confirmation prompt is used only on a terminal.
