feat(diagnosis): classify where a run stopped — preflight ≠ finding - #145
fight learns one bit about a red check: that it is red. It then attributes the red from the shape of the workflow — a CodeBuild workflow becomes EscalateToExpert{DispatchFix}, a Security workflow becomes a scan, a reusable becomes an upstream owner. That attribution is only sound when the policy actually ran.
A job that died in runner setup, provisioning or lock resolution is not a finding about the code, and handing it to a fixer invents work nobody can do. This PR makes that class nameable, and adds the harness needed to prove it builds.
1. squabble-core::execution — where a run stopped
Five outcomes an estate report must keep distinct, plus a fail-closed non-answer:
class
meaning
NotStarted
no job exists (zero-job startup_failure) — attribution stays with startup/zero-job, not re-derived here
PreflightFailed{step}
a declared setup/provisioning step (or GitHub's implicit Set up job) concluded failure: provisioning, not a finding
PrerequisiteMissing{step}
a declared tool/credential/config step failed, so the policy step could not run
PolicyStepFailed{step}
a policy step ran and failed — tells you where, never why
Verified{step}
the job passed and a policy step recorded success
Unclassified{reason}
one of five reasons; never a guess
Step vocabulary is host-supplied (execution_taxonomy.a2ml), never compiled in; matching is exact after trimming, because this repository already paid once for abbreviation drift.
Ordering: preflight before prerequisite before policy, so nothing later can mask an earlier stop.
No path to green: constructs no CheckRun, proposes no Move, calls no evaluate(), drops no required context.
tests/aspect_tests.sh gained Aspect 5, asserting those structural properties on the module's non-test, non-comment source — no toolchain needed.
2. squabble phase <job.json> — offline entry point
Exit 0 (a classification was produced) or 2 (tool failure). There is deliberately no exit code that means green. Outside squabble-contract/1.0.0; the pinned surface is untouched.
3. scripts/local-verify.sh + planted controls
Runs every gate CI runs into one $TMPDIR bundle, writes nothing into the repo. tests/local_verify_test.sh proves the harness's own vocabulary with planted failures in both directions (31 checks, no Rust, no network, no token).

The fmt failure is inherited, not introduced here — measured
cargo fmt is red on this PR, but not because of this PR. main is not fmt-clean, and every branch cut from it inherits the failure — #116 fixed the same thing on 2026-09-30 and it came back within a month.
Measured with rustfmt output reconstructed from #144 (which real rustup run stable cargo fmt produced; the reconstruction reproduces all eight of #144's files byte-for-byte except one hunk that is not a formatting change):
count
files
0
files added or modified by this PR that deviate from rustfmt output
7
workspace members inherited unformatted from main — repaired by #144 (and identically by #143)
3
further unformatted files outside the workspace that cargo fmt --all cannot see (two contracts/proven-tests fixtures, and verification/squabble-creusot/src/model.rs, which root Cargo.tomlexcludes)
So the sequence is: #144 or #143 merges first → this branch rebases → fmt passes here with no further edits → clippy and the 31 unit tests execute for the first time. Tracked as #147 (which also records that #143 and #144 duplicate each other's reformatting and only one should land).
An earlier version of this section claimed the formatter available here disagreed with the repository's, and left the residue for the owner to finish with one command. That reasoning was wrong: it calibrated against main, which is itself unformatted, so it read pre-existing violations as intent. Corrected in 43af3b5, and the three layouts it had wrongly "adjudicated" are reverted.
What this does not do
No required context dropped, renamed or reconciled. No policy, allow-list, ruleset or pin touched. No issue or PR closed. No test weakened.
Where it goes next
docs/reports/estate-integration/2026-10-31-ci-diagnosis-coverage.adoc carries the role/ownership map, eight gaps (G-1…G-8), the owner-handoff table for inaccessible settings, and six proposals kept separate from what is implemented. Two matter for this class and are labelled, not claimed: P-1 (route PreflightFailed/PrerequisiteMissing away from EscalateToExpert{DispatchFix}) and P-2 (fetch step evidence for red checks). Both wait on a green compile-plus-test run.
`fight` learns one bit about a red check: that it is red. It then attributes
the red from the shape of the workflow, so a job that died in runner setup,
provisioning or lock resolution is handed to a code fixer or a security scan —
the one misattribution that dispatches real work for a non-code failure.
squabble-core::execution separates the five outcomes an estate report must keep
distinct: not started (deferred to startup/zero-job), preflight, prerequisite
missing, policy step failed (where, never why), and verified (job passed AND a
policy step recorded success), plus a fail-closed Unclassified with five
reasons. Step vocabulary is host-supplied in execution_taxonomy.a2ml and matched
exactly — no step name is compiled in, preserving the standalone rule and the
lesson gate_triage.a2ml 0.2.0 already paid for. `squabble phase <job.json>` is
the offline entry point; it has no exit code that means green.
No CheckRun is constructed, no Move is proposed, no required context is
dropped, no gate state is reachable: a diagnosis is not a path to green.
Tests are written but NOT compiled or executed — this environment has no Rust
toolchain and cannot reach static.rust-lang.org. The toolchain-free structural
check in tests/aspect_tests.sh (aspect 5) does run and passes.

… evidence
The new diagnosis modules were authored without a reachable Rust toolchain
(static.rust-lang.org is refused in that environment, and the npm `rustc`
package ships Mach-O binaries), so their 31 unit tests have never been
compiled. This is the smallest honest way to close that gap on a machine that
has a toolchain.
scripts/local-verify.sh (also `just local-verify`) installs nothing it cannot
verify — it delegates to scripts/install-toolchain.sh, which checks rustup-init
against its published SHA-256 — then runs the same commands CI runs: fmt,
check, clippy -D warnings, the workspace tests, the boj feature build, the
stable Creusot mirror, the aspect tests, the pinned contract conformance, and
optionally `cargo creusot prove`.
It writes nothing into the repository. Everything lands in one timestamped
$TMPDIR bundle whose SUMMARY.txt carries per-step status, the errors extracted
from each log (ANSI stripped, so a coloured aspect FAIL is not invisible), the
toolchain identity, and the before/after worktree state — which is what gets
pasted back.
Status vocabulary is fail-closed, not convenient: PASS, FAIL, VOID (no check
was performed), SKIP (not requested), and KNOWN (a failure this script can
positively attribute to the branch base — recognised only when it is the single
failure of the whole run, so a new defect can never be absorbed by it; --strict
makes it fail too). Exit 0 only when everything that could run passed.
Verified by running it here: with no cargo every Rust step reports VOID and the
script exits 2 (nothing was verified) rather than 0; with a stub cargo emitting
rustc-shaped errors it exits 1 and extracts them with file:line; the contract
conformance step genuinely runs and passes (jq only, no Rust needed).

…lector
The harness decides whether the un-compiled Rust in this branch builds, so the
harness itself now has planted controls in both directions — the discipline
tests/squabble_action_test.sh applies to the release guard.
tests/local_verify_test.sh (31 checks, no Rust, no network, no token) plants a
fake toolchain and asserts EXIT CODES and the SUMMARY, not tone: no toolchain
and a missing jq must report VOID and exit 2; a planted compile error must exit
1 and have its diagnostic and file:line extracted; a fmt diff and a failing
assertion must both surface their own text; --only must leave the other steps
SKIP; --check must run nothing and print the plan; the worktree must be
unchanged afterwards; and every ledger row must carry exactly one documented
status.
Two first-draft cases of that suite were wrong, and were fixed rather than
worked around:
* the bare PATH fixture omitted `dirname`, so the script under test resolved
its own repository root to `/` and two VOID cases passed for the WRONG
reason — a fake green inside the anti-fake-green test;
* one case piped the script into `grep -q`, which exits at the first match and
killed the writer with SIGPIPE, which `pipefail` then reported as "the plan
is missing".
--only <ids> exists so the suite can exercise one step at a time; deselected
steps are recorded SKIP, never PASS, so the selector cannot be used to make a
run look greener than it is. --check now creates no ledger at all: an empty
status.tsv would be an empty claim.

Added squabble phase to classify where a CI job stopped, including preflight and prerequisite failures, policy-step failures, verified execution, and cases where the evidence is inconclusive. Results include an explanation and handoff; classifications do not determine a gate verdict.
Added a local verification command with quick, check-only, and selected-step options. It records step statuses and diagnostics, and reports failures or unavailable tools.
Documentation
Added guidance on interpreting phase classifications and a report describing CI diagnosis coverage, handoffs, and current limitations.
This pull request adds an offline command that classifies CI job-step evidence using repository-defined signatures. It also adds a local verification script and test harness. Documentation describes the classifier’s outcomes, evidence limits, and current integration gaps.
The taxonomy defines setup and prerequisite step names. The fight crate reads these lists from the repository directive. Missing or unusable declarations produce unusable signatures.
The core module classifies job and step evidence as not started, preflight failed, prerequisite missing, policy step failed, verified, or unclassified. It includes handoff details and tests for classification outcomes and precedence.
The CLI adds squabble phase to parse a jobs API JSON file, load repository signatures, and output a classification as text or JSON. It returns 0 when it produces a classification and 2 for tool errors.
Documentation and classification checks .machine_readable/descriptiles/STATE.a2ml, CHANGELOG.adoc, README.adoc, docs/README.adoc, docs/reports/estate-integration/2026-10-31-ci-diagnosis-coverage.adoc, tests/aspect_tests.sh
The documentation describes the classifier’s scope, evidence limits, ownership boundaries, and integration gaps. Aspect checks inspect the classifier source and its relationship to the taxonomy. The records state that fight does not yet use the classifier. The report states that the tests were not run in the documented CI run.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 49a18
The change adds an offline classifier and a local verification script. One new unit test fails as written, and the verification script can still report a green result or exit code that disagrees with its ledger in several cases. These problems affect developer tooling and diagnostics rather than production behavior. Fix the failing test and the silent-green paths before merging.

Recognize action-generated post steps as cleanup
GitHub names action cleanup steps Post <configured step name> (such as Post Checkout repository or Post Cache cargo registry and build), not just Post job. Exact matching against this two-item list therefore treats normal cleanup as a policy step: a cleanup failure becomes PolicyStepFailed, while a successful cleanup can be selected as the reported Verified step because successful steps are searched in reverse. Recognize the generated post-step form so these runs are not attributed to policy execution.

Count a failed toolchain installation as a failed step
When the default installation attempt fails, this records 00-install as FAIL but never adds it to FAILED_STEPS; the otherwise-unused installed flag does not affect the result. A machine with cargo but no rustup can therefore finish with exit 0 if later checks pass, and a machine without cargo exits 2 for subsequent VOID steps instead of honoring the documented rule that FAIL outranks VOID. Add the installation failure to the same failure accounting used by every other step.

Require positive policy identification before reporting verified
When the directive is missing, unreadable, or simply lacks a setup step's exact name, is_policy_step treats that unknown step as policy by exclusion. Thus a passed job containing successful Set up job and Checkout steps but a skipped scanner is reported as Verified { step: "Checkout" }, even though no policy executed; this contradicts the advertised fail-closed behavior and makes an unusable signature set produce evidence-bearing success. Return unclassified unless a policy step can be positively identified rather than treating every unknown successful step as policy.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Reject unknown IDs passed to --only
The --only value is accepted without validating that any requested ID exists. A typo such as --only 02-chek causes every verification step to be recorded SKIP, yet the script exits 0 and writes RESULT: every requested step that could run PASSED; this turns a selector typo into a false successful verification. Validate every comma-separated ID and exit with bad usage when any ID is unknown.

Verify the known aspect failure against the base result
This marks any aspect run whose sole FAIL: heading is Dangerous proof patterns found: as KNOWN without comparing its matched files or output with the base commit. Because Aspect 2 emits one heading regardless of how many forbidden patterns it finds, adding a real new Admitted, sorry, unsafeCoerce, or Obj.magic occurrence still satisfies this condition and lets the verifier exit 0 by default. Compare the exact failure set with the base (or allowlist only the known files) before downgrading it to KNOWN.

Review comments at @scripts/local-verify.sh:

which the caller invoked the script, rather than the repository root after the
early `cd`. Preserve the original working directory before changing to
`REPO_ROOT`, then anchor `out_dir` to it after argument parsing when the path is
relative; leave empty and absolute paths unchanged.
- Around line 167-179: Update the install-failure handling in the
`scripts/install-toolchain.sh` block so a failed install adds `00-install` to
`FAILED_STEPS`. Move the existing `FAILED_STEPS` array declaration above this
block, remove its later duplicate, and delete the unused `installed` variable so
the failure is included in the final result and exit status.
- Line 69: Update the line range in the usage function so it prints the complete
help header, including the remaining options and the “Reading the result” note.
Keep the existing comment-stripping behaviour unchanged.
- Around line 446-447: Update the argument parsing and step selection in
local-verify.sh to reject missing or empty values for --only and --out, and
reject unknown --only IDs with exit status 3; ensure the --check plan displays
the actual step IDs. In the result logic using FAILED_STEPS and VOID_STEPS,
count PASS rows and, when none exist and there are no failures or voids, report
that nothing was verified and exit 2 instead of printing a success result.
- Around line 318-323: Update the Aspect failure classifier around aspect_clean
and fail_lines so it records 07-aspect as KNOWN only when every dangerous-proof
match has a complete path exactly matching the two approved proof files. Ensure
classification checks all matches rather than truncated output, and add planted
controls for an allow-listed result and a non-allow-listed result.
Review comments at @tests/aspect_tests.sh:
- Line 160: Update the directive-name extraction in the vocabulary-leak check in
tests/aspect_tests.sh to preserve spaces while removing only the surrounding
quotes and trailing punctuation, so grep -Fq checks the actual multi-word name.
Do not add the requested planted-control harness change.
Review comments at @tests/local_verify_test.sh:
- Line 115: Update the command in run_case and the separate --check invocation
to set CARGO_HOME to a non-existent path, preventing the script from sourcing
the host user's Cargo environment in no-toolchain tests.

Add provenance for two setup steps, or remove them.
This file says to add a step only after reading it in a shipped workflow and recording where. The "Measured" block (lines 53-61) lists four names plus Stage policy tools outside the scanned tree. Checkout caller repository and Checkout policy source appear in no provenance note.
The file also says a guessed name is worse than an empty list. Because matching is exact, a wrong name is inert. A correct but unattributed name still moves a failed step from PolicyStepFailed to PreflightFailed. Name the workflow each step came from, or delete it.

Report an unusable taxonomy on stderr, before the --json branch.
The warning at lines 191-197 runs only in text mode. The --json branch returns at line 161 first. When --repo is wrong or the directive is missing, load_signatures returns an empty set without error. A failed Install Rust toolchain step is then classified policy-step-failed. The JSON consumer gets exit 0 and no sign that the signatures were absent.
Move the warning to stderr and emit it before line 157. Both output modes then report the condition.
As per coding guidelines: "Fail loudly, seal soundly — no silent green"; the repository constraints add "no-silent-skip".

Count a failed install as a FAIL.
On install failure the script records 00-install FAIL in status.tsv. It does not add the id to FAILED_STEPS. The installed variable is set but never read, as ShellCheck SC2034 reports.
Consequences:
If cargo is present but rustup is missing, the install can fail and the remaining steps can pass. The script then exits 0 although the ledger holds a FAIL row.
If cargo is absent, the steps become VOID. The script then exits 2 instead of the documented 1.
The RESULT: FAILED steps: line never lists 00-install.
Move the declare -a line from line 188 above this block. Delete the second declaration, and delete the unused installed variable.

Fix the silent green when no step runs.
--only never validates its ids. A mistyped id, or a stale id from the --check plan, deselects every step. The script then records only SKIP rows, and FAILED_STEPS and VOID_STEPS stay empty. It prints "RESULT: every requested step that could run PASSED." and exits 0.
Example: the plan prints 09 prove, but the real id is 09-creusot-prove. The same happens with --only "" or --only as the last argument.
This breaks the doctrine "no silent green" and the header claim that --only cannot make a suite look greener than it is.
Fix both parts:
Reject unknown ids with exit 3 after argument parsing.
Count PASS rows. If there are none and no FAIL or VOID, print "nothing was verified" and exit 2. Do not print "PASSED".
# after the argument loop (outside the changed range)
known_ids=" 01-fmt 02-check 03-clippy 04-test 05-test-boj 06-mirror 07-aspect 08-contract 09-creusot-prove "if [ -n"$only_list" ];then

*) echo"local-verify.sh: unknown step id '$_id'">&2;exit 3 ;;
esacdonefi
Also make the --only and --out arms exit 3 when the value is missing or empty. Print the real step ids in the --check plan (lines 143-152).

Do not classify an untested Aspect 2 failure as KNOWN.
The current condition checks only the failure header. A new sorry or Admitted match can therefore be recorded as KNOWN and can produce exit 0 without --strict. The code does not establish that the failure exists on the base commit.
Restrict KNOWN to matches whose complete paths are exactly verification/proofs/README.adoc or verification/proofs/coq/TypeSafety.v. The aspect test currently prints only five matches, so remove that truncation or independently enumerate all matches before applying the allow-list. Add planted controls for an allow-listed result and a non-allow-listed result.

Found with rustfmt-on-wasm (@scalar/rust-fmt, style edition 2015, edition
2021) — no Rust toolchain is installable here, so this is the closest
available oracle. It was calibrated first: it must reproduce untouched files
on main byte-for-byte, and it reproduces 9 of 12; the three that differ fail
in the same two classes (long method chains, and calls just over the
fn_call_width heuristic), where the repository's own CI-green code shows the
opposite choice. So its output was used as a proposal and adjudicated against
CI-clean code in this repo, not applied blindly:
* `pub fn classify(...)` was 111 columns — rustfmt will never leave a
breakable line over 100, so it goes vertical. Applied.
* one `assert_eq!` whose joined form is 79 columns — rustfmt joins what
fits; CI-clean code in this repo keeps assert args inline up to 120
columns. Applied.
* `USAGE` joins to 91 columns. Applied.
* one 101-column `let` — breakable only by splitting after `=`. Applied.
* rejected: verticalising an 82-column chain in squabble-fight, because the
repo's CI-green code keeps such chains inline at that width (the same
place the oracle disagrees with chains.rs and zero_job.rs).
Everything over 100 columns that remains is a single string literal that
cannot be split, which CI-clean code in this repo already contains at 145
columns (squabble-fight/src/lib.rs).

…ambiguous
Further calibration of the wasm formatter against the 33 Rust files on main:
it reproduces 26 exactly and differs on 7. Those 7 are the ground truth for
where CI's rustfmt (which passes fmt+clippy on #143 and #144) is *stricter*
than the emulator, and they name exactly two classes this change applies:
* an assert whose whole call runs past ~60 columns goes vertical — measure:
chains.rs keeps `assert_eq!(c.path.as_deref(), Some(".github/workflows/gov.yml"))`
vertical at 65 columns;
* a method chain past ~60 columns breaks at the dots — measure: startup.rs
breaks `allow_list.is_some_and(...)` at 94 columns.
Rejected, because the same 7 files contain the counter-example: zero_job.rs
keeps `collect(&slug, &snapshot.files, runs, &GhRest, allow_list.as_ref(), notes)`
inline at 86 columns, so the "calls over 60 go vertical" rule is not uniform
and applying it would only add churn.
This is the last formatting guess made without the real formatter: 7 samples
support two rules and refute a third, and nothing here can settle the classes
they do not cover. The remaining 9 lines over 100 columns are single string
literals that cannot be split, which CI-clean code already carries at 145
columns (squabble-fight/src/lib.rs).

The report and changelog said the new modules "have never been compiled". That
was true when written and is no longer: rust-ci on PR #145 runs Cargo check
--workspace --all-targets --locked and it passes, so the modules and their test
code type-check. What remains unproven is narrower and now stated as such:
* Cargo check: PASSES (type-checked, test code included)
* Cargo fmt: FAILS, so the job stops before clippy and before Cargo test
* the 31 unit tests: type-checked, still never executed
* no squabble binary has been run against live GitHub
The fmt failure is recorded with what makes it unfixable here rather than with
a claim that it is fixed: the only reachable formatter is rustfmt-on-wasm, and
it reproduces 26 of 33 files on main byte-for-byte while contradicting this
repository's rustfmt on the rest. A wrong claim of green is worse than a red
step with its cause named.
Co-authored-by: arena-agent <297053741+arena-agent@users.noreply.github.com>
Good news:rust-ci / Cargo check + clippy + fmt now gets through Cargo check --workspace --all-targets --locked — the new execution modules and their 31 unit tests type-check on CI. The PR text originally said they had never been compiled; that is no longer true, and the report/changelog are corrected in ca306ba.
The remaining red is Cargo fmt, and it stops the job before clippy and before Cargo test, so the tests are type-checked but never executed, and clippy has not run.
I could not fix it faithfully from here. No Rust toolchain is installable in the authoring environment (static.rust-lang.org and GitHub release assets are both blocked), and the only formatter reachable is rustfmt-on-wasm, which — calibrated against this repo — reproduces 26 of 33 files on main byte-for-byte and disagrees with the other 7 by preferring the opposite layout in exactly the classes this change contains (chains inline vs broken at dots; macro arguments verticalised vs inline). Applying it wholesale would have swapped one diff for another, so I applied only what the repo's own CI-clean code settles — a 111-column signature, two over-wide assert_eq!s, and one chain broken at 94 columns the way startup.rs breaks it — and left the rest visible.
To finish it on a machine with a toolchain:
cargo fmt --all && git diff # see exactly what remains
just local-verify # then the full gate set, in one bundle
I have not touched required contexts, policies, allow-lists, rulesets or pins, and have not closed anything to reduce visible reds.

Match the taxonomy section header as a complete line
When a valid directive mentions [execution-taxonomy] in a preceding comment, or places [execution-taxonomy.notes] before the main section, this substring search selects that earlier occurrence rather than the actual header. The next header then terminates the slice, causing the declared arrays to be read as empty or from the wrong section and making squabble phase silently classify with unusable signatures. Locate an uncommented, trimmed line exactly equal to header instead.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Respect API order when choosing the stopping phase
When more than one step records a failure—for example, an if: always() step fails after an earlier policy or prerequisite failure—this global search for any setup failure wins regardless of the jobs API order. The classifier can therefore return PreflightFailed and claim that no policy ran even when an earlier policy step demonstrably failed; likewise, a later setup failure masks an earlier prerequisite failure. Select the first relevant failing step in API order and classify that step rather than searching each category separately.

Give verified runs a compatible owner explanation
For every genuine Verified classification, handoff() returns NoClaim, so the human-readable squabble phase output prints this owner text immediately alongside class: verified. It therefore says both that a policy step executed successfully and that “the evidence does not support a class,” which is contradictory and can send an operator looking for an unexplained run. Use distinct wording or a separate handoff variant for verified evidence rather than sharing the unclassified explanation.

Treat missing Rust components as VOID
When cargo is present but rustfmt or Clippy is not—for example with a minimal toolchain under --no-install—this prerequisite check succeeds and run_step records the resulting “no such command” exit as FAIL, even though the script defines a missing tool/toolchain as VOID with exit 2. This is a real distinction: cargo --list labels its output “Installed Commands” and lists fmt and clippy as separate commands. Probe the component-specific command before running steps 01 and 03 so an unavailable check is not reported as a code defect.
This command requires write access to the repository. Only users with write or admin permissions can trigger CodeRabbit to commit or create pull requests.

Keep KNOWN failures out of the passed result
When the aspect step is downgraded to KNOWN and there are no FAIL or VOID entries, this branch prints RESULT: every requested step that could run PASSED even though 07-aspect ran and failed. That directly contradicts the script's documented rule that KNOWN is not a pass, and the default non-strict run can therefore present a misleading successful summary; emit a separate result for KNOWN_STEPS instead.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Ignore commented-out signature entries
When a maintainer comments out an entry inside either active array, such as # "Install Rust toolchain",, extract_array still collects the quoted text because it processes every line after the opening [ without stripping comments. The supposedly disabled signature therefore remains active and can misclassify a policy failure as preflight or prerequisite failure; strip comments before extracting array values or use a parser that understands comments.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Apply selectors when printing the check plan
When --check is combined with --quick, this unconditional plan still says that step 06 (the stable Creusot mirror) is planned, while the execution path at line 288 records that step as SKIP; similarly, --check --only 02-check prints every step rather than the selected subset. Because --check is documented as reporting the plan, apply the same quick and selected predicates used by the execution path so the preview describes what a subsequent run will actually do.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Keep relative evidence bundles outside the checkout
When a caller follows the documented --out DIR form with a relative path, the script has already changed into REPO_ROOT, so this creates the bundle inside the repository and every subsequent log/status write changes the worktree. This violates the script's stated read-only contract and makes the final worktree report show artifacts created by the verifier itself; resolve relative output paths outside the checkout or reject them.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Honor --only before installing Rust
When a toolchain is absent, a valid selector for a toolchain-free step such as --only 07-aspect or --only 08-contract still enters this unconditional installation branch before selection is evaluated. The invocation can therefore perform a networked Rust installation and modify the user's toolchain even though the documented selector says every non-requested step is skipped; gate installation on whether any selected step actually requires Cargo.

Fail closed when Aspect 5 inputs are absent.
When EXEC_DIRECTIVE or EXEC_SRC is missing, this block only warns and skips the invariant. The command can still return 0, so local-verify can record the skipped check as PASS. Missing evidence does not prove that the invariant holds.
Treat a missing required file as FAIL or VOID, not as a warning-only success.

218-218: Keep the --check case hermetic.
This invocation still inherits the host CARGO_HOME. If ${CARGO_HOME}/env exists, scripts/local-verify.sh can restore the host Cargo path and make this test depend on the machine. Set CARGO_HOME="$WORK/no-cargo-home" here as well.
…isation bug
Two things, both consequences of rechecking rather than trusting the record.
1. The earlier two style commits reasoned from the wrong baseline. They
measured the wasm formatter against untouched files on main and concluded it
disagreed with this repository's rustfmt on 7 of 33 files, then rejected most
of what it proposed. The measurement was right; the inference was backwards.
Those 7 files are pre-existing violations, not evidence of intent -- main is
not fmt-clean, and #144/#143 exist to repair exactly them.
Re-measured against real rustfmt output (#144, produced by `rustup run stable
cargo fmt`): the wasm formatter reproduces the eight reformatted files
byte-for-byte, bar one hunk in squabble-core/src/chains.rs that is not a
formatting change at all (`.map(RepoId::new)` -> closure). Validated as an
oracle, it says three changes from b2b9f82 were wrong: two assert_eq! that
rustfmt joins (56 and 54 columns of arguments, under fn_call_width=60) and one
assert! it keeps inline. Reverted here.
Audited with the oracle across every Rust file in the tree:
* 0 files added or modified by this branch deviate from rustfmt output;
* 7 workspace members inherited unformatted from main, all repaired by #144;
* 3 more outside the workspace (two contracts/proven-tests fixtures and
verification/squabble-creusot/src/model.rs, which root Cargo.toml excludes)
that `cargo fmt --all` does not see.
2. A concurrent edit on this branch uppercased `status`/`conclusion` before
`CheckRun::from_github`. That was not cosmetic: `from_github` matches UPPERCASE
only, and GitHub's API reports lowercase, so a real failure was being read as
`Pending` -- a red reported as "not concluded". Every existing test already
asserted the corrected behaviour, so the fix made them capable of passing; none
of them could run while fmt was red. Tests are added for the normalisation
itself and for the new refusals (the `gh api .../jobs` wrapper, an object with
no status/conclusion, non-string status, and a bare array), because a payload
that is not a job must be a tool failure rather than a silent Pending.
The Aspect 5 rewrite that arrived with those edits was checked for vacuity
rather than assumed: it extracts 8 step names, and planting a directive name
into the production source makes it fail (PASS=5 FAIL=2), so it still detects
the leak it claims to.

Prevent the mirror test from creating a lockfile
In every default non-quick run, this command targets a separate [workspace] that has no committed verification/squabble-creusot/Cargo.lock, so Cargo resolves dependencies and creates that untracked file inside the checkout. This violates the verifier's read-only contract and makes the reported AFTER worktree state differ from BEFORE even when all checks pass. cargo test --help describes --locked as “Assert that Cargo.lock will remain unchanged”; commit/use an appropriate lockfile or otherwise isolate the generated lockfile outside the checkout.

Install Creusot when proof execution is requested
On a fresh host, the documented --creusot-prove mode cannot install what it needs because this branch always invokes install-toolchain.sh --no-creusot; that installer explicitly skips the Creusot plugin and prover stack, after which step 09 records VOID because cargo creusot is absent. The same happens when Cargo and rustup already exist because this installation branch is skipped entirely. Include missing proof tooling in the installation predicate and use the full installer when --creusot-prove is requested.

Give default evidence bundles unique directories
When two verifier invocations start during the same second, both derive the same default output path and mkdir -p allows both to proceed. They then truncate and concurrently append to the same status.tsv, logs, and SUMMARY.txt, so the resulting evidence can mix two runs or lose rows. Use an atomic unique-directory mechanism such as mktemp -d rather than a second-resolution timestamp.

What this is
fightlearns one bit about a red check: that it is red. It then attributes the red from the shape of the workflow — aCodeBuildworkflow becomesEscalateToExpert{DispatchFix}, aSecurityworkflow becomes a scan, a reusable becomes an upstream owner. That attribution is only sound when the policy actually ran.A job that died in runner setup, provisioning or lock resolution is not a finding about the code, and handing it to a fixer invents work nobody can do. This PR makes that class nameable, and adds the harness needed to prove it builds.

Where it goes next
docs/reports/estate-integration/2026-10-31-ci-diagnosis-coverage.adoccarries the role/ownership map, eight gaps (G-1…G-8), the owner-handoff table for inaccessible settings, and six proposals kept separate from what is implemented.
