feat(sessions): Claude Desktop Code sessions in the Sessions tab (#111) - #168
Conversation
Desktop never writes history.jsonl, so its sessions take the VS Code path: listed from transcripts, running ones by their sessions/<pid>.json registration, switched by Desktop's per-session deep link with an app-focus fallback. Before, a running Desktop pid fell into the CLI branch, whose cwd guess attached it to an unrelated closed session. Also: cap the transcript head/tail reads under exec's 1 MiB buffer (an image line emptied them, giving a timestamp of 0), and fall back to grep when the entrypoint is not within a transcript's first 4 KB. - Around line 1156-1164: Replace the unbounded Promise.all over unsniffed with
bounded batches using the existing runInBatches helper, keeping the entrypoint
lookup and vsCodeFiles collection behavior unchanged.
- Around line 1533-1535: Update the session entrypoint lookup using
cachedEntrypoints and cachedClosedVSCode so a Desktop session’s routing
information remains available after its process exits and active detection
replaces the cache. Retain the entrypoint across that transition or resolve it
from the transcript before selecting the launcher, ensuring a Desktop-badged row
still opens Desktop.

…s past exit Review round 1 on #168: the grep fallback started one process per unsniffed transcript at once, and a Desktop session selected in the window after its process exited (absent from both caches) resumed in a terminal instead of opening Desktop. Summary
Claude Desktop's Code-tab sessions now appear in the Sessions tab, running and closed, and selecting one opens that exact session in Claude Desktop. Closes #111.
Before this change they never appeared. Worse, a running Desktop session could light up an unrelated closed CLI session in the same folder (details below).
What the user sees
✳ DESKTOPbadge in Claude's coral colour, running or not. The terminal badges (GHOSTTY,ITERM2, …) show only on running sessions, because they report where a process was found. The Desktop badge instead says where a click goes, so it is styled apart.claudeprocess for the session. Desktop starts that process only when you open the session in its own UI, so a session in Desktop's sidebar is not automatically "running".How it works
~/.claude/history.jsonl(the CLI's prompt history, which is CodeV's main session source). So Desktop sessions take the path VS Code sessions already use: read from their transcripts.claude-desktopjoinsclaude-vscodeas a "transcript-only" entrypoint in one place (isTranscriptOnlyEntrypoint).~/.claude/sessions/<pid>.jsonregistration, exactly by session id.claude://claude.ai/claude-code-desktop/local_<id>. That<id>is Desktop's own id for the session, not Claude Code's: Desktop keeps one record per Code session at~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude-code-sessions/<a>/<b>/local_<desktop id>.json, withsessionId(Desktop's) andcliSessionId(Claude Code's). On one machine, all 14 records that carry both had different ids. Three older records have nocliSessionId; the ids were equal then, which is why the link worked with the Claude Code id when first tried in feat: Claude Desktop Code mode session support #111 (2026-04). So: look the id up, and fall back to the Claude Code id when no record has it. A lookup takes about 8 ms.openfails, CodeV focuses the app instead. Note that a link Desktop does not recognise does not fail: Desktop shows "This session couldn't be found" andopenexits 0.The deep link and the record format are Desktop internals, not a documented API. The VS Code link CodeV already uses is in the same position.
Bugs fixed on the way
history.jsonl, so detection fell into the CLI path, which guesses by directory. Desktop's process sits under no terminal (claude→Claude.app/…/disclaimer→Claude.app), so the title cross-reference could not help either. The process went to a closed CLI session in the same folder whenever that folder had one. This was found by reading the code; it was not observed in the UI.head -n 20/tail -n 100reads of such a transcript exceededexec's 1 MiB buffer and came back empty, and time 0 sorted the session out of the 100-row list. Both reads are now capped below the buffer. Measured: two of seven Desktop sessions showed time 0 before the change, none after.entrypointis past its first 4 KB was not recognised. A pasted image in the first line does this. Measured: 2 of 7 Desktop transcripts, and 9 of 257 transcripts overall. Those few are now checked withgrep -m1.history.jsonland added those rows back only when background detection finished. They are now carried over and replaced once fresh data arrives.Testing
npx tsc --noEmitclean;npx vitest run222/222. No new unit tests yet.entrypointIn()andfindClaudeDesktopRouteId()are the testable pieces (the latter with a fixture in Desktop's record shape) and can be added in this PR if wanted.yarn startbuild, with Desktop running, with Desktop running but the session not started, and with Desktop fully quit: the session is listed and selecting it opens that session in Desktop. Desktop visibly reloads when navigated from outside. The rows no longer vanish when the window comes back.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
