Closes #63.

The problem

Switching to a running Ghostty session used a session's /rename title, then its working directory. A session with no custom title therefore went to the first terminal in its directory — and with several sessions in one directory, that is usually the wrong one. Measured on one machine on 2026-10-22: 16 Ghostty terminals shared ~/git, and every un-renamed session there switched to the same tab (ttys003).

iTerm2 and Terminal.app never had this problem, because they can also match on the session process's tty — a process has exactly one controlling terminal, so tty cannot pick a sibling. Ghostty could not, because its AppleScript dictionary did not expose a per-terminal tty. Ghostty tip builds now do: ghostty-org/ghostty#11922 (merged) adds tty and pid to the terminal class.

What changes

Switching (openSessionInGhostty) now goes through src/terminal-switch.ts, the module iTerm2 and Terminal.app already use:

① tty and title, in the order the pid's provenance calls for — an exact pid (read from Claude Code's sessions/<pid>.json) tries tty first; a guessed pid tries title first → ② working directory, as the last resort → ③ not found: copy the resume command to the clipboard (unchanged).

openSessionInGhostty now receives the activePid its caller already had. assemble gained an optional trailing fallback; the iTerm2 and Terminal.app scripts it produces are unchanged, and a test pins that neither gets a cwd block.

Detection (crossRefDisambiguate) gets the same tty → tab title → custom title match that iTerm2, cmux and Terminal.app already have. One deliberate difference: a Ghostty pid that the cross-reference does not place still takes the cwd fallback, as every Ghostty pid did before, so nothing regresses — above all on stable Ghostty, where there is no tty to match. Measured on the same machine: 31 of 31 Ghostty claude processes had a sessions/<pid>.json, so this path is rarely reached today; it is here so all four terminals follow one rule.

Stable Ghostty

Stable Ghostty (1.3.1 and earlier; no release carries #11922 yet) has no tty in its dictionary, and AppleScript resolves terminology at compile time. So the property is read by its raw four-character code, «class Gtty», inside try: the script compiles regardless, and on stable Ghostty the lookup errors, is swallowed, and title and cwd run exactly as before. Verified on tip build 18371 that «class Gtty» returns the same /dev/ttysNNN as tty. Not verified on a stable 1.3 install — none was available; the two guards are the reason it should hold.

Two smaller things found on the way:

  • Ghostty's process comm is the full bundle path, so the usual pgrep -x ghostty never matches, and pgrep -f saw nothing in the shell where this was measured. The running-check (needed so that tell application "Ghostty" never launches Ghostty) uses ps -A -o comm=.
  • The cwd block now escapes the project path for the AppleScript string literal; the old inline script interpolated it raw.

How it was checked

  • Real Ghostty, read-only. The generated scripts were run against the live Ghostty with focus replaced by "report what would have been focused", so nothing moved on screen. Two sessions in the 16-terminal directory (ttys005, ttys004) each resolved to their own terminal by tty; the old cwd-only logic picks ttys003 for both. A pid that no longer exists falls through to cwd.
  • Unit tests: 9 new in terminal-switch.test.ts — Ghostty joins the shared order tests, plus cwd-last in either order, no tty block without a pid, the raw-code-inside-try guard, path escaping, and the iTerm2/Terminal.app "no cwd block" pin. Full suite 222/222.
  • Cross-reference title rule (review round 1, 3b65f1a). The cross-reference took the first /rename title its tab contained, from every transcript in the directory, so Fix could claim a tab titled Fix backend. That loop existed four times (iTerm2, cmux, Terminal.app, and the Ghostty copy above), so it is now one function, pickSessionByTabTitle in src/cross-ref-title.ts: only the queued candidates, longest matching title wins. This changes the other three terminals too, in the same direction; 4 tests, mutation-verified.
  • Mutation-verified: reverting to tty of term, moving cwd before the keyed blocks, and emitting a tty block with no pid each turn exactly one test red.
  • tsc --noEmit clean.
  • Exercised end to end in a built app (yarn make, 2026-10-22): switching to same-directory sessions from the Sessions tab landed on the right Ghostty tabs.

Docs

The README terminal table and eleven statements in docs/claude-session-integration-design.md (the switch flow diagram, the TTY-reliance list, the accuracy table, the upstream tracking table) said Ghostty had no tty; they now say that holds only for stable Ghostty. Upstream statuses were checked, not assumed: #11922 merged, #11592 and #10756 closed by it, #11354 superseded, latest release v1.3.1. 1.0.94 with a CHANGELOG entry.

Overlap

The open-PR scan found #119, a draft last updated 2026-06-26 that also edits openSessionInGhostty (for its worktree launch). It will conflict here when it is next brought up to date; nothing in it depends on the switch logic this PR replaces.

Ghostty tip builds expose `tty` and `pid` on the terminal class
(ghostty#11922). Measured on tip build 18371: 16 terminals shared
~/git, and the cwd-only switch sent every un-renamed session there
to the first one (ttys003); by tty each lands on its own.

Switching now goes through terminal-switch.ts like iTerm2 and
Terminal.app — tty and title in the order the pid's provenance
calls for — and keeps cwd as the last resort. openSessionInGhostty
receives the activePid its caller already had.

Detection's cross-reference gets the same tty → title match, as
iTerm2, cmux and Terminal.app already do; a pid it does not place
still takes the cwd fallback, so nothing regresses.

Stable Ghostty 1.3 has no `tty`: the property is read by its raw
code «class Gtty» inside `try`, so the script still compiles there
and falls through to title and cwd. Ghostty's comm is the full
bundle path, so its running-check uses `ps`, not `pgrep -x`.

Eleven statements in the README and the session-integration design
doc said Ghostty has no per-tab tty and switches by title then cwd.
That now holds only for stable Ghostty (1.3.1 and earlier); tip
builds switch by tty. Upstream status checked rather than assumed:
ghostty#11922 is merged, #11592 and #10756 are closed by it, #11354
was superseded, and no release carries it yet.

📝 Walkthrough

Ghostty session switching and cross-reference detection now use per-terminal TTY data when available. Switching retains title and working-directory fallbacks. Title matching across supported terminals selects the longest eligible session title. Documentation distinguishes Ghostty tip builds from stable releases.

Explanation

Issue #63 requires Ghostty detection and switching for sessions that share a working directory. The PR adds Ghostty TTY and title matching, keeps cwd as the fallback, and preserves cwd fallback when detection cannot place a Ghostty PID. The switch order follows exact or guessed PID provenance. Tests cover matching order, fallback behavior, stable-dictionary syntax, and path escaping. No cmux implementation is required because this PR addresses the Ghostty scope of #63.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay connected to #63. They include Ghostty switching and detection, shared title-selection logic for consistent cross-reference behavior, supporting tests, and related documentation and changelog updates. The process check and cwd escaping support the requested Ghostty behavior. No unrelated functional change is demonstrated.

- Line 614: Synchronize the Ghostty support matrix, cross-reference note, and
Phase 1 list with the updated same-cwd limitation: stable Ghostty still relies
on title-to-CWD matching, while per-terminal TTY support is available only in
tip builds. Remove outdated statements that TTY support is wholly pending,
without changing the limitation described in the updated entry.
- Line 343: Update the Ghostty detection entries in the session integration

matching terminal title to identify the session; otherwise detection falls back
to CWD. Do not describe untitled same-CWD sessions as always correct on tip
builds.

Review comments at @README.md:
- Line 106: Update the Ghostty row in the table to document both switch orders:
exact PIDs use TTY → title → cwd, while guessed PIDs use title → TTY → cwd. Keep
the existing stable-version note and unrelated Ghostty guidance unchanged.

Review comments at @src/claude-session-utility.ts:
- Around line 884-887: Update the session-title matching loop around
sessionTitles to consider only session IDs in item.candidates, then resolve
overlapping title matches before assigning item.pid in activeMap so a shorter
substring title cannot claim a terminal that matches a more specific title. Keep
ghosttyMatched updates aligned with the resolved assignment.

CodeRabbit, verified against the code. The cross-reference took the
first /rename title its tab contained, from every transcript in the
directory, so `Fix` could claim a tab titled `Fix backend`, and a
session with no row in the list could claim one at all. That loop
existed four times — iTerm2, cmux, Terminal.app, and the Ghostty copy
this PR added — so it is now one function: only the queued
candidates, longest matching title wins. Mutation-verified: taking
the first match, or ignoring the candidate list, turns tests red.

Docs: Ghostty detection still needs a title once tty has found the
tab (untitled → cwd), the README states both switch orders, and the
support matrix, cross-ref note and Phase 1 list stop contradicting
the rest of the page.
