Closes #241

What

  • The fields, WhatsApp and importer screens load on demand, the way core screens already do.
  • The WhatsApp sidebar and the fields contact panel load on demand too. The WhatsApp route preloads its sidebar, so the rail swaps the menu in one step, and the contact route preloads the contact panels while the contact loads.
  • A part whose code fails to download reloads the page once instead of breaking the whole app.
  • The auth transport prints GraphQL documents with the printer urql already ships, so graphql-js leaves the first paint.
  • New end to end checks: each plugin screen, the sidebar and the panel load on demand, nothing before first paint carries the graphql-js printer, and a lost chunk recovers.
  • The screens guide shows plugin authors how to load screens, sidebars and panels on demand.

Why

First paint was 1,574 bytes under the 1240 KiB cap, so the next plugin would break it. It is now 1,180,541 bytes, about 87 KiB under, with the cap unchanged.

Testing Instructions

  1. make e2e: every spec passes, including the bundle and chunk recovery checks.
  2. pnpm --filter @alphone/frontend cover: 100 percent.
  3. Open a contact, the WhatsApp section, the fields screen and the imports list: they look the same as before. A pixel compare against main at 1920, 1280 and 390 found no difference.
  4. On a slow first visit the WhatsApp section and the fields screen show about 120 ms later, because their code is now its own request. Every page starts painting about 70 ms sooner.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • Plugin screens, contact panels, and WhatsApp navigation now load on demand, reducing the code loaded before the page first appears.
    • Contact panels begin loading as a contact page opens. Existing navigation remains visible while a panel or sidebar loads.
  • Reliability
    • Contact and WhatsApp pages can recover when a lazily loaded screen or panel needs to be reloaded.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the screen-building guide with lazy-loading patterns and bundle-size guidance.

📝 Walkthrough

Plugin screens, contact panels, and sidebars now load on demand. Contact routes start optional panel preloads, and Suspense boundaries handle pending panels and sidebars. The auth transport uses the SDK’s GraphQL document printer. Tests cover loading, recovery, and eager bundle contents.

Changes: Plugin loading and first-paint bundle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Lazy plugin screens
plugins/fields/frontend/*, plugins/importer/frontend/*, plugins/whatsapp/frontend/routes.tsx, docs/src/content/docs/extending/screens.md, test/e2e/tests/bundle.spec.ts
Fields, importer, and WhatsApp thread routes now load their screens through lazyRouteComponent. Route tests check for preload functions, and bundle tests check that screen chunks are not eager scripts.
Lazy contact panels
sdk/frontend/index.ts, frontend/src/contacts/*, frontend/src/router.tsx, plugins/fields/frontend/index.ts, test/e2e/tests/chunk-recovery.spec.ts
Contact panels support optional preload callbacks. The contact route starts panel preloads, and each panel renders inside Suspense. The fields panel loads dynamically. Tests cover panel loading and contact chunk recovery.
Lazy sidebar loading
frontend/src/RailContent.tsx, frontend/src/test/*sidebar*, plugins/whatsapp/frontend/*, sdk/frontend/testing.tsx, sdk/frontend/test/renderPluginAt.test.tsx, test/e2e/tests/chunk-recovery.spec.ts, docs/src/content/docs/extending/screens.md
The WhatsApp route preloads its lazy sidebar. Frontend and SDK hosts wrap sidebar content in Suspense. Tests cover pending and recovered sidebar states.
Shared GraphQL document printer
sdk/frontend/index.ts, sdk/frontend/test/graphPrint.test.ts, frontend/src/auth/graphTransport.ts, test/e2e/tests/bundle.spec.ts
The SDK exports urql’s stringifyDocument as printGraphDocument. The auth transport uses that export, and tests check the export and eager bundles.

The two recovery checks confirm content returns after a navigation but do not verify that recovery uses exactly one reload. This is a bounded test-coverage gap, not a demonstrated production failure, so the PR appears mergeable with that follow-up noted.

Explanation

Issue #241 requires on-demand loading for the fields, WhatsApp, and importer screens, on-demand loading for the fields contact panel behind a loading boundary, and replacement of graphql-js print. The changes lazy-load the three screens and the fields panel, add Suspense, preload relevant components, and use the SDK printGraphDocument helper. End-to-end checks verify the first-paint bundle, excluded chunks, and chunk recovery. The existing 1240 KiB cap remains unchanged.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within Issue #241. Preloading, Suspense boundaries, chunk recovery, focused tests, SDK typing, and screens documentation directly support on-demand loading and the printer replacement. No unrelated product behavior is demonstrated.

Summary

This PR loads plugin screens, the WhatsApp sidebar, and contact panels on demand. It also replaces the auth transport’s graphql-js printer with urql’s printer.

  • Plugin screens load when readers open their routes.
  • Contact panels start loading as the contact page opens.
  • Auth requests print GraphQL documents without graphql-js.

No new actionable issues were found. Tests were not run during this review.

test/e2e/tests/chunk-recovery.spec.ts: 1

28-31: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert exactly two main-frame navigations in both recovery tests.

The lazy components call window.location.reload() when their chunk fails, and the route aborts matching chunks until the navigation count reaches two. Therefore the current content assertions cannot succeed through a same-document retry.

They do not assert the count directly, so they do not protect the “reloads once” behavior. Return the counter and assert 2 in both tests.
