fix(recording): warn about macOS Presenter Overlay camera conflicts - #1388
macOS Presenter Overlay can interrupt OpenScreen’s separately recorded camera track while the screen recording continues. This adds guidance before source selection and reports effect changes during a take, without stopping capture or removing media.
UI states
Detection rules behind the table:
Supported hardware: macOS 14+ on Apple Silicon, or an Intel Electron process under Rosetta.
An independent camera track counts only when OpenScreen’s own camera recorder actually started; the main process reads that from the request it was given, not from the UI toggle.
Effect transitions come from the primary ScreenCaptureKit stream’s start/stop delegates. The main process associates them with the current recording ID and keeps cameraInterrupted sticky for the rest of that take.
The HUD and the editor record page share one local acknowledgement preference. It hides the pre-recording guidance only; it never suppresses a conflict alert.

H0
HUD
Idle with camera off, unsupported hardware, or guidance already acknowledged. Also any take with no effect.
No Presenter Overlay UI.
Normal capture.
H1
HUD
Idle (not recording/saving); camera on; supported hardware; guidance not acknowledged.
Acknowledging stores the shared preference and removes the card.
H2
HUD
Recording; helper reports effect start while an independent camera track is running.
Alert auto-opens with amber title; amber triangle status button appears in the bar, aria-expanded=true.
Recording continues; no track is removed.
H3
HUD
User clicks Close on H2.
Only the amber triangle button remains; tooltip carries the conflict title; aria-expanded=false.
Clicking the button reopens the details; a HUD re-render does not reopen them.

E3
Editor after a take
The take ended with cameraInterrupted set and the editor imports that recording.
Toast warning with the interrupted-camera copy through the existing recording-import warning path.
Information only; no media changes.
Two limits are documented rather than claimed:
If Presenter Overlay is already on when a stream starts — Restart while it is on is the common case — ScreenCaptureKit may not emit a start callback for the new stream, so no warning is guaranteed until the effect changes.
Effects applied to another application’s stream are not reported by these callbacks. Camera-off overlay availability is not promised.
Screenshots
These are locally rendered from the real HUD/editor components and their CSS with mocked Electron, camera and i18n state — not desktop captures. They show the copy, hierarchy and state differences; they are not evidence of a real recording.
Implementation
Observe the primary ScreenCaptureKit stream’s effect start/stop delegates; ignore auxiliary audio streams and stale helper events.
Preserve startup events, coalesce duplicate transitions, and reset history for a new take. Once an effect overlapped the independent camera, the interruption flag stays for the rest of that take.
Count transitions that reach the helper drain while a stop is in flight, so a real end-of-take overlap is not lost before the editor warning is written.
Share the one-time acknowledgement through one hook. The HUD and the editor record page listen for cross-window storage changes, so an already mounted surface drops stale guidance when the other window acknowledges it.
Restrict pre-recording guidance to Apple Silicon / Rosetta on macOS 14+.
Put the editor guidance card on the same inset as the recording-panel rows, so the panel’s rounded corner does not clip the card.
Add the notices to the existing common namespace in all 15 supported languages. No dependencies or persistent format changes.
Validation on macOS 15.7.1 / Apple M2, Electron 41.2.1
npm run test: 363 files passed, 5,056 tests passed, 2 skipped (full run on the final tree).
npx tsc --noEmit and npx tsc -p tsconfig.test.json --noEmit: passed.
Biome on the changed tracked files, npm run i18n:check, npm run docs:check, and git diff --check: passed.
npm run build-vite: passed. Fresh helper built with swift build -c release --package-path electron/native/screencapturekit --product openscreen-screencapturekit-helper; its SHA-256 (5c1440f448fc66a052dd34863852db273d8eb46c03a6dfb536bb15d0acb371d0) matches the staged executable.
Desktop acceptance: a local operator toggled Apple’s system effect in Control Centre, which the automation driver cannot reach, while computer-use drove the HUD and editor. With the camera on, real Small on/off emitted both helper warning events; the HUD auto-opened the warning, kept recording, kept the warning after Off, collapsed to the amber button on Close, reopened it from that button, and passed the translated warning into the editor. Horizontal and vertical HUD layouts stayed usable. With the camera off, a native synthetic-window take started with no conflict warning; the operator found no system effect option, so camera-off overlay availability is not promised. Guidance appears with the camera on, disappears with it off, and acknowledging it in either place persists across remounts.
Not covered: Large mode, an effect already active when the take starts, full-display captures, Apple’s source picker, other macOS versions/devices, Windows/Linux runtime, packaged builds, or the rest of the checklist. The standard native build script requires full Xcode; direct SwiftPM compilation succeeded, but swift test is blocked here by missing XCTest (CI runs the Swift tests). The editor card inset was verified in the local render only. No packaged-build or cross-platform runtime validation is claimed.
Related to issue #1378. This is warning and detection work, not camera recovery or a claim of simultaneous camera compatibility. No recordings, camera images, raw logs, or personal filesystem paths are included. The screenshots above are locally rendered from mocked state, not desktop captures.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added pre-recording macOS Presenter Overlay guidance when the camera is enabled on supported devices. Acknowledging the guidance prevents it from appearing again and keeps that choice in sync across windows.
The recording HUD shows when Presenter Overlay is active, included in screen-only footage, or may have interrupted separate camera recording. Details can be collapsed and reopened.
Bug Fixes
Overlay warnings remain visible after the effect stops, and recording continues without interruption.
Documentation
Added guidance on Presenter Overlay behavior and a partial manual test record.

Walkthrough
The change adds macOS Presenter Overlay capability detection and recording-scoped event tracking. The renderer uses overlay state to show pre-recording guidance and HUD notices. Guidance acknowledgement is saved in user preferences, and translations and documentation describe the added states.
The app reports Presenter Overlay support for eligible macOS systems. Native screen-stream callbacks produce start and stop warnings. Electron forwards recording-scoped state updates and includes the current state in the recording-start response.
Recording-scoped renderer state src/hooks/useScreenRecorder.ts, src/hooks/useScreenRecorder.nativeMacStartWarning.test.tsx
useScreenRecorder tracks overlay events for the starting or active recording. It uses the start snapshot when no newer event has arrived and clears state on cancellation, failure, or finalization.
The recording interfaces display pre-recording guidance and HUD notices based on support, camera state, and overlay state. Acknowledgement persists in user preferences. Tests, translations, and documentation cover the added states.

…ocking
Add one-time pre-recording guidance shared by the HUD and the editor recording page. During a take, a real conflict warning can be collapsed to a persistent amber status button; acknowledging guidance never suppresses a conflict alert, and a new take resets the state.

Keep current-take overlay warnings through the stop drain.
If the helper emits presenter-overlay-started just before Stop, its stdout line can arrive after nativeMacStopInFlight becomes true. isLiveTake() then rejects the line. cameraInterrupted stays false, so the saved take has no editor warning. Keep the stop guard for error and exit handling, but accept overlay lines from the current helper until its output is drained.

Accept overlay transitions that reach the helper drain while a stop is in flight, so the editor warning cannot miss an end-of-take overlap. Close on-request camera-off details when the effect goes away, make aria-controls match the mounted panel, and keep the HUD button's callback stable. Document that detection is transition-based and an effect already on at start is not classified, name the tested revision in the checklist, and add regressions for acknowledged guidance versus real conflicts and one-time auto-expansion.
The card sat flush against the rounded recording panel, whose overflow clipped its top corners. Give it the same inset as the panel rows; the copy, role and acknowledgement behaviour are unchanged.
Synchronize the recording page after HUD acknowledgement.
The HUD shows the before guidance when recording has not started and the camera is enabled. The editor remains in rec mode and keeps RecStage mounted. The HUD acknowledgement updates only HUD-local state, so the page can continue showing the same one-time guidance.

Move the one-time guidance acknowledgement into a shared hook used by the HUD and the editor record page. Both listen for cross-window storage changes, so an already mounted surface hides the guidance when the other window acknowledges it; the acknowledging window still updates locally because storage events do not fire there. Cover the hook and both surfaces with storage-event tests.

Update acknowledgement state only after persistence succeeds.
If localStorage.setItem fails, saveUserPreferences catches the error, but this hook still sets acknowledged to true. The guidance disappears in the current window and returns on the next mount. Have the saver report write success, and update state only after a successful write. Based on learnings, “only update in-memory React state after the persistence write succeeds.”

saveUserPreferences now reports whether localStorage accepted the write. The shared guidance hook keeps the card visible when the write fails, instead of hiding it locally and bringing it back on the next mount. Cover both the preference helper and the hook.
