Citation Density — The number of independent domains that mention, link to, or reference your brand. Brands with 10+ independent domains referencing them achieve 3.2× higher AI mention rates. Independent citation is the off-page equivalent of backlinks for AEO.
llms.txt — A proposed standard file (like robots.txt) for communicating site content to LLM crawlers. Implemented by Stripe, Zapier, Cloudflare, and Anthropic. Supported by OpenAI and Perplexity. Google's position remains unclear.
Zero-Click Optimization — AEO accepts that users may never click through. The goal shifts from traffic to influence — being the brand mentioned in an AI response is brand-building even when no click follows.
Freshness Signals — Content under 3 months old is 3× more likely to be cited by AI engines. Leading AEO brands update key pages quarterly.
Multi-Platform Presence — Each AI engine cites differently. ChatGPT leans on Wikipedia and Reddit. Perplexity weights recent, well-structured sources. Google AI Overviews favor pages that already rank. A cross-platform content strategy is required, not optional.
